Yes, it's somewhat expensive. It is expensive because you will actually find things you want to buy. If you are looking for, for example, men's jackets, this is probably the best place in Berkeley to get them. Highest quality merchandise of any thrift store I've been to in the town, and two of the best jackets I've ever owned are from here. They were thirty and fifty dollars, respectively, for a corduroy and a leather jacket. Not unreasonable for clothing in good shape, which these were. You aren't likely to have to worry about the smell of something you shouldn't wash.
I've had pretty good experiences with the staff. I haven't interacted with them very much, because for the most part they stay out of your way. After almost every single staff member I've seen in there (over roughly three or four years of browsing occasionally) has done so, I'm pretty confident that this is store policy. I like this, and when I have talked to them, they've been polite and helpful, and made useful comments when talking to them about the clothes.
VERY REASONABLE PRICES. Great product! The price is determined by the weight of the item.
Vintage Mens jacket galore! Not very much to sift through in the womens section. but the service was friendly and the idea of charging by the pound seems ok. Willing to give it a second try.
Prior to my last visit, I could take Sharks or leave it. The shruggable selection and non-thrift pricing certainly didn't inspire me to cross the street. However, when a friend was searching for a unique dress, then scored an 80s gold halter one for four bucks, I reconsidered. If you're looking to ring in 2010 in vintage, take advantage of their ten dollars a POUND sale. I repeat: anything and everything on a hanger by the pound. I can think of nuts more expensive!

The petite, mature version of Mars down the way, Sharks has outgrown the trendy for classy period… Read more »
This is an ok little thrift store. Did I mention little? It is very small. There is not a lot of selection and the pieces seemed expensive for the quality. I went in, looked around and didn't buy anything.
Owned by the same people who run Mars but usually a lot friendlier and with a greater selection of suits (both for men and women). You're more likely to find wearable time period clothing here, but it is often more expensive. Costumes, tuxedos, shoes, ballgowns, etc. What more do you want out of a vintage store?
However, it is a bit cramped and not as cheap as I would like.
Sharks is this cute store kind of tucked away at the end of the Telegraph strip. They don't have a lot of merchandise, but what they do have is pretty cute. I found a really nice 80s sweaters there on my last visit. The staff is not exactly mean, but they do kind of ignore you. And when you're in a small store like this, it makes shopping kind of awkward. Also, they only have one shoe out, which makes it difficult to try on, since you have to ask them to go to their stock room to find its pair. For some reason, this seems like a bother at a vintage shop. But all in all, I can usually go in there pretty confident I'll find something I really, really like.
Edit: I'm taking away a star from my previous review because the last time I was in Sharks, the two employees were fighting on the salesfloor, arguing really loudly. It was so awkward, I had to leave. I'm used to being ignored here, and I'm ok with it. But when you scream at each other in front of me like little sisters fighting over a new toy, it makes me feel like I'm somewhere I shouldn't be.
I almost always find at least one just-right basic piece here,
that's because I come specifically for those things: they specialize in such essentials as overdyed cotton tanks & thermals, blazers, etc. The prices are fair and totally average for a vintage store in the Bay Area for the most part.
Question: why do people who work at hip stores almost invariably think it their duty to look down their nose at you? I have actually had somewhat friendly conversations with the people who work at Sharks, but it's after we've found out we share a liking for something in the shop and I've had to force the conversation. I shouldn't have to work so hard to feel welcome there...
Sharks is cute, small and a trip.
I found this German drindl I love and finally wore to a Yelp Event recently. It's great for Halloween costumes and such.
It's the wardrobe of the person I wish I could be.
They have a LOT of (men's?) cowboy boots here. If you are looking for that perfect pair, I recommend going here, as I've never seen a thrift store with that many cowboy boots.
They have some nice women's heels too. Their clothing is so-so.
I stopped by here for the first time in a long time today. Although I didn't buy anything, I had the opposite experience of most reviewers on here in regards to customer service. I walked in and was greeted, and asked if I needed help finding anything. Even after I said I was cool she offered her assistance if I thought of something. So, I thought she was pretty cool. The store itself IS pretty small, but organized and it has some pretty cute things. Not necessarily in my size, but cute nonetheless.
So rude.... My BF works right around the corner from this place and I have gone in a few times to look around... I never find anything worth trying on and they have a really small, somewhat over-priced selection... What really takes the cake though is the sales associates are sooooo rude and have an I'm way cooler then you attitude.... I was in there today and the girl who was working couldn't give anyone the time of day... I watched her actually go out of her way to avoid customers... She didn't greet anyone and when asked a question about back-stock sunglasses by another customer acted like she was being asked to give up her first born.... Bleh.... I've learned my lesson about going in here....
small, cramped store, but with quality selection. the prices are a bit on the high side, but you won't have to dig through a bunch of crap to find good stuff, because it's pretty much all good stuff.
Some cute stuff here, but not a lot to look at. I only wish they had more shoes.
I used to love browsing the vintage t's, dresses and boots. From first glance it seems that you'd totally find something. They do a great job with the window displays, because it fools me every time. But, somehow, I never walk out of there with anything. Probably because the majority of the items are way overpriced. If I wasn't as concerned with keeping my checking account at a somewhat reasonable balance, then I'm sure I could find a few things.
I was out on Sunday with my wife, looking at various clothing shops on Telegraph.
At first, I was reluctant to go into Sharks, as I'd read bad things about nearby Mars' customer service, and had the impression Sharks and Mars were related. We walked in, and there was nothing too exciting about the place, for good or bad, but then the shocker came a few minutes later.
An older gentleman had walked in, and perhaps was confused about his destination, or was simply looking for Buffalo Exchange; all I heard was the clerk mentioning B.E. and giving directions. After the guy left, she turned to a co-worker and said she was tired of giving local directions, and would start saying that she didn't know, that she wasn't from around here, etc. The two discussed another coworker, who apparently has a worse attitude, and what she'd do in such cases. My god. That they were so brazen as to discuss this while I was literally 5 feet away and looking at them, indicates their manager has some serious problems in hiring and training employees who will make customers eager to return.
Think about it: not only did I tell my wife that we're outta there (losing 2 customers), but suppose she had been rude to the guy who came by - he'd not return either.
Eh, not super amazing at all to be honest. Its a super laid back environment with literally over-priced vintage clothes that you could find at your typical Good Will if you're willing to work and look for it. I'm usually never impressed with their selection (just go there to kill time/browse), although from time to time I find something extremely adorable and then get Gobsmacked the second I stare at the $50 price tag and then see the giant ketchup stain on the back of said item. But yeah, nothing at all great. Just your average overpriced funny smelling unclean vintage store, with employers that couldn't care less about the customers.
i looove their selection of suspenders.
cute store for people who need costumes and the like.
staff is a bit snobby.
i like it overall, but i won't make it somewhere where i shop all the time.
This place has really good color coordination, and sometimes has good shirts, jackets and pants.
I was going to a 70's party, and needed some pants. this place had the BEST selection and I even found some kick ass 70's shades. I'm not sure if you would have luck with other eras of vintage clothing, but this is the place to go for 70's gear.
I got a pair of camel colored suede gloves here once and they were absolutely beautiful. Stolen two weeks later, but absolutely soft and buttery and gorgeous. If I recollect properly, there were leather gloves of all colors and sizes. But they weren't pleather though.
The space is tight, I'd recommend getting an abnormally-houred job and going weekday afternoons to avoid the Saturday hipsters. Great selection of weird stuff... 50's-80's dresses, shirts, cords, military jackets... the staff is awesome. Y'know, for a buncha hipsters.
I found many pieces in this store that I would've love to buy had they not been extremely over priced. Gone are the days where vintage clothing was affordable now that it has become trendy. $95 for a dress? That is RIDICULOUS......i don't care where the hell it was imported from. Staff was friendly enough when they thought I was going to buy the ridiculous dress but quickly lost interest.
Nice selection of belts and jewelry. Fair selection for vintage clothing(men, women, 50's-80's) and overpriced. Still worth checking out though, I've found some of my favorite accessories there like chunky leather cinch belts and necklaces for layering.
chill pretty decent selection of vintage but pretty overpriced.
