Manhattan, NY
Let me just start by saying that my massage was wonderful. One of the best that I've ever had. The massage definitely deserves a 5 star rating but the fact that there were no doors on the treatment rooms prevented me from rating Shangri-La as 5 stars. I could hear the person in the next room sneeze. It was very quiet in the spa so it wasn't a huge problem. However, I would prefer doors to keep out any noise that can be avoided.
One other thing to note: I read the yelp reviews before I came here and I knew what to expect. The spa is not a new and modern establishment. But the prices are really good especially considering how wonderful my massage was. Just keep that in mind if go.
I will definitely be back for more massages. -

I purchased a voucher for a 60 minute massage of my choice for $50. I will take full responsibility for letting it go until the last month (I had a YEAR to use it) before scheduling. The 1st two times I called to schedule, as soon as I said that I had a "Spa Sally" voucher, the tone of the call changed from being all sweet and accommodating to completely annoyed with my questions. Admittedly, I asked annoying questions like "do you have any appointments available after 6 pm"... (yes, I am being sarcastic).
Anyway, the voucher expires on 9/28/11, and time was running out so I took a 6:30 appointment on a Friday. It was going to be tough for me, because I usually work late on Fridays.
Last week into the beginning of this week, I was out of town. Knowing that I would have to work late the rest of this week to make up for my absence, I called (as shown on my cell call history) on 9/16/11 at 4:22 pm. to reschedule my appointment from Friday evening to Saturday afternoon at 3 pm. No problem.
Tonight, sitting at work, my phone is blowing up. It's the chick from the spa yelling at me that I am late for my massage. I try to explain that I rescheduled and she kept saying "No you didn't". It was a great conversation: ME: "I rescheduled to tomorrow", HER: "No you didn't". Finally, she says "ok" and hangs up.
Since she had me still down for tonight, I call the spa back to make sure I have an appointment tomorrow... NOPE! And now they are too busy for me tomorrow. I am upset, and again tell her that I rescheduled. I cannot make any other appointment before the 28th and I'm going to lose the $50 I spent on the voucher. She tells me again that I didn't reschedule, and calls me a liar, at which point I reach the end of my patience, tell her to basically shove the massage, and that I will take care of the situation with Spa Sally, and I hang up.
A few minutes later, she calls back to say I'm not a liar (really???) and that I can come in before the 28th and they will honor the voucher. The thing is, I can't make an appointment before the 28th.
In the end, this is my opinion of this place. RUDE unless you're paying full price for their services. And from reading some of the other reviews here, it seems like I am not missing much. I don't expect to be treated like royalty, but some common courtesy is a MUST. -

I had a groupon type thing for a massage of facial, I opted for the facial and boy was that a mistake !! I first off didnt know if I had the right building, it's an apartment building I think so I was like okay, this is intresting. Then when I got in I was lead to a small dingy room I laid down and hoped for the best. The lady I don't know her name but she did NOTHING!! I could have done better myself and have. First off she was stingy with the products and then the extraction was BS!!! it makes me wonder if she even has a license and Im sure she doesn't as many small nail and hair salons employee's don't. She put a mask on and left me for 30m so really it was only 30m. Then when I was ready to leave I handed the owner the voucher and then she asked me to pay tax which is fine but then she harassed me for a tip and handed me the tipping chart which was placed right on the glass table in what would have been a living room Im guessing. Im like WTF this lady is crazy I gave her 18% to shut her ass up and will never go back !!!

I chose to have the deep tissue massage and Beth was fantastic.
When I arrived at the location, I rang the door bell which was near an open restaurant door. When I walked in, the hostess didn't greet me. I was led directly to a dimly lit room with NO door. There was a curtain and I could hear every conversation outside. I couldn't believe my ears. The hostess/owner was extremely rude to me and kept badgering me to tip after my massage before I was even dressed. Then she said I had to pay her tax and then she said I didn't tip enough. I couldn't believe she wanted me to leave more than 20% tip.
She's an older woman who answers the phone. She's unprofessional and unwelcoming.
I will NOT return to this spa. -

While my massage here was pretty good (one of the better ones I've had in NYC actually), and the facial was alright, I don't think I would go back purely due to the ambience. I felt like I was intruding in someone's home - it was small and dark. And it seems like most of the spas in the UWS are like this so maybe I should just stay away from UWS spas.
The worst part is that the rooms have no doors - just thin curtains so you hear conversations outside between staff and other customers. I think I had paid around $80 for a 1/2 hour massage and full facial, but I just didn't think it was worth it given the ambience. I don't need to be super fancy, but I need to feel like I am in a spa and not at someone's home-run business. And yes, they tried to keep it as quiet as possible, but when I go to a spa, quiet as possible is still not quiet enough (especially as there are no doors here). -

My massage w/ Beth was AWESOME. Hands down 4-star maybe even 4.5 star for the massage itself. She was attentive, but not talkative. She checked in with me about pressure, without smothering me w/ comments- love that! Her techniques were quite good and I felt my muscles relaxing....
HOWEVER! I couldn't really relax because the walls were so thin, and there aren't doors- they use curtains. So basically, even though I was the only client there, I could hear all the commotion outside the room- a random person buzzing the door, the boss/manager answering calls or closing cabinets. That was very distracting. My only complaint is the noise and lack of sound proofing for the rooms. I can't imagine going when lots of clients are coming in and out.
The decor is fine; looked clean to me. Has a small bathroom w/ a shower. I'd categorize it as more of a massage/healing center type of place as opposed to a luxury spa.
A cool thing about this place is that they have a backyard and apparently they use outdoor massages in the summertime! -

I was very pleased with my massage. Especially since I bought it for $25 from Spa Sally. The spa is in a basement and doesn't have a spa feel but the massage was worth more than double of what I paid.
The girl made sure to ask if the pressure was okay, asked me beforehand if I had any trouble areas, and made sure I was comfortable. Things which had not been done at other spas that I've been to recently.
Will def. come back again! -

Went to this place twice because I bought kbg coupons.
First massage was exactly what my rating is: Meh. I've experienced better.
Second massage actually painful while I was getting it and the lady told me, I would feel better afterward.
I keep checking for bruises to show up on my skin.
Overall, this was was not good and the manager keeps telling everyone to not make noise because there are other clients in the place. I appreciate that, but I need to tell my therapist the if the pressure was too hard or now.
PS It is hardly a day spa but a few licensed therapists working out of an apartment. I do not mean to be brutal, but this is the truth...one should not be so misleading. -

I and my wife went here as we got a coupon for an Aromatherapy. The place looks super shady, the owner creates enormous unnecessary hype as soon as you enter by speaking so softly as if we are in a bunker!! The oil used for the massage was smelling so bad that we decided to come home directly and take a shower. The only positive experience was that the massage ladies were decent and did their job gracefully. Any business with a rude owner will never succeed.

The decor is not spa resort, but its nice and quiet, and the women there give great massages - great deep massages.
The prices are decent for the work you get. -

I got two escape packages for myself and a close friend two weeks ago. We got massages, facials and body wraps. I love the quaint decor when you come in. There was no wait, and I like that they have a nice back-yard. The owner (Kelsa) was very sweet. The massage was very good, and the facial could have been better, but was very decent for the price paid. The wrap was very soothing as well.
The only drawback, was that there are no doors, and you can hear whispering happening outside, I would have preferred not to hear anything, but it was a good value. My friend really enjoyed herself and was relaxed for days, she tells me that she would return. I might return as well when I need a last minute escape.
Overall, it was a very nice experience and very good service. -

I am sorry to write this because the owner is a pretty nice lady who does have magic hands, but...my experience was not so great and I will not be going back. I bought a KGB deals discount coupon for the massage. I called to discuss a time and though I'm an assertive person I kind of felt like I was strong armed into going the time that suit her best. She is the owner of her establishment and the short of the long is this. Like I said, she had magic hands, but unfortunately she stopped in the middle of my massage about 2 times to tend to outside affairs and talked candid to me (people do that) about how she can't keep customers. :| She also made it clear the cost did not include tip and therefore it was expected of me to tip her. Which I did, however, I really should have not seeing she's the proprietor. Seems like she needs some advice on how to conduct herself as a business owner. She could be such a great Masseuse!

I was here a few years ago and it was a great experience. Over time though, the decor has faded and it is like walking in to a shady apartment complex. I received a facial-- which was thorough and the products smelled great, but I could hear all the noise outside the apartment and the attendant eating, on the phone, and busy throughout intervals of the facial. I also asked for a receipt and although I had a coupon/deal as payment, she said it was impossible. I really just wanted proof of attending, along with tip and tax. Not knowing the original total, I was unsure of what to tip and apparently $15 was not enough because she seemed quite unhappy.
As for the facial, my skin was well cleaned and the woman who did the treatment was very attentive, but the overall experience made me decide to go elsewhere next time. -

If you want a great massage, this is the place to go. This is the first positive review I am writing on Yelp because I really support what they are doing. If you want a quality massage, you can't beat this price. If you want a resort and luxurious environment, this would not be a good fit. But it was very comfortable for me because I went during off hours (Friday morning). I suggest that if you don't want to hear other clients coming into the waiting area.

I was looking for a spa to visit with a group of girlfriends, all in town for one friend's wedding. I had a terrible time finding a spa that could accommodate a group, and one that would let us talk and enjoy talking and catching up in between treatments. I was so happy to come across this spa!! Kelsang was incredibly friendly and very helpful in putting together a schedule. All 8 of us were able to have treatments, and most of us had two. We were all extremely happy with the treatments, and the prices were fantastic, especially for NYC.
Although it is is an apt building, the space is clean and quiet, with a definite Thai sensibility. There is a lovely little outdoor courtyard covered with a sunshade where we sat while waiting, and she provided fruit and cheese and water. We had brought champagne (which we were too hungover to drink, unfortunately) and she had purchased cute plastic champagne flutes for us to use.
Overall I thought this was a fantastic value, and a really nice place to go with a group. It's not an upscale environment, but it's a nice, clean space, the services are excellent, the price is right, and Kelsang is a lovely businesswoman I am happy to support. -
Review from Neha S.
This place is an apartment converted into a massage/spa place. It's relatively clean. I asked my massage therapist (sara) to give me an in between swedish and deep tissue, but she seemed to either only put too much pressure or not enough. I could also hear everything outside since the room was separated with a curtain. I got a deal from KGB, but I wouldn't return.

Love Love Love Kelsang and the massage I got. My back was killing me and honestly the pain went away completely after my massage. The owner, Kelsang is extremely sweet. She can try to be a little motherly at times which I think might have been rude to some of the other reviewers. Yes it's true the place isn't very quiet or "resort like" but who cares? The massage is great and the price very reasonable.

I love Shangri-La. Great value (this is the best quality massage I've ever had for this low price), great deep-tissue massages, and I can get last-minute appointments. I've been going here for years and I've always had a positive experience.
The decor is definitely not upscale, but I prefer my money to go to quality massage than to fancy interior design. -

If you have been feeling any pain in your lower back or shoulder, you need to go see Sarah at this spa. after the one hour of massage, I was not having any pain anymore. She began with moderate pressure and then really got in deep.It was a great experience and my husband and I will be back. Thanks Sarah, see you again.
