I've never had a bad meal here, and when it is the Liver and Onions with Bacon, it is one of the best you'll have on this planet ("ethereal" is the word that comes to mind, along wtih "exceptionally tender").

Service has always been swift and outstanding. Prices reasonable. Wine reasonable. Food prepared nicely, and special requests due to dietary limitations (half my friends, it seems) are honored and done perfectly.

Decor is retro glam...it's a great place to be "fabulous". Ginger, the hostess, is one of the treasures of the desert. So delightfully warm, quite possibly the nicest hostess I've ever met. I've taken friends, and once a year, I take Mom. And *she* loves the place. She flirts with the men (yes, straight men DO go there), and she thinks Ginger, the food, and the wine are great.

I'm sad to hear about the kitchen going south? But I haven't yet experienced that. I'll make it back there in the next month or two and give my fellow Yelpers an update.

I am down with Jim W.'s review.

Even though I'm from Reno, I've gone to SOTM at least once, if not twice a year for the past 6 years and until recently, it was one of the highlight's of my annual or semi-annual 2 week visit.

The last two years have seen this restaurant go from a 4.5 Star Babe to a 3 Star wanna-be.

"Someone's in the Kitchen With Dinah" and whoever it is has distracted the hell out of the chef. This past visit there were so many things wrong with the dinner that I thought I'd been dropped into an alternate reality. The salad WAS NOT FRESH. The veggies were yucky mushy, the corn-cake thing was an undercooked glob.

Thankfully, my peanut flank steak was still the bomb of cow-eating.

Please WAKE THE HELL up you Moonies, because we used to love this place to pieces and want to love it that way again.

Come back to earth. Hugs and Kisses to all.

Almost any restaurant can provide good food and good service at a high price.  But Shame on the Moon provides excellent food and service at a reasonable price.  I prefer to be seated in the Garden (don't worry, it is not outside) rather than the main dining room.  It is more private and quiet.  Advanced reservations are required.

Martinis in Palm Springs!
We try to get to Shame on the Moon everytime we go to Palm Springs.  I always feel so welcome, from the moment I step in the door.  The food is consistently good--expect old school continental.  This is where you want to go to spend a quality evening with a group of friends, or a romantic evening for two (they have several deuce tables).  The crowd varies from Palm Springs hip, to Palm Springs gays and greys.  Shhh! Let's not let this special place get too popular!

I don't get the hype!  The main dining room is so dark and so loud that
you don't know whether you are coming or going.  We sat in the "garden room" which is basically a long hallway.  Our table was at the end of the hallway and had a floor to ceiling curtain on one side that separated us from the table next to us, an old fashioned china cabinet on the other side, a non working fireplace in front of us and a window with the shades closed behind us...Interesting...
Our waiter had absolutely no personality whatsoever!  Don't know his name, but he had grey hair and was in his 40s.... We all ordered the four course meal for $36.  I started with the chicken soup.  Now I love putting lemon in my chicken soup, but the broth tasted like a lemon broth!  It was terrible!  Then I had the steam spinach napoleon for an appetizer.  Besides Popeye, who eats that much spinach?  It was about 4 cups of spinach and you had to dig to the bottom of the plate to find the small portion of goat cheese that existed there.   The filet mignon was just okay and the potatoe cakes looked like rice crispy treats.  Too bad they didn't taste like them!  For dessert I had the banana and white chocolate mousse napoleon which was good.   My husband and brother in law ordered the peanut butter pie for dessert.  They took a bite and looked at eachother and said "This doesn't taste right!"  My sister tried it and agreed that it had almost a sour/rancid taste to it.  Our waiter was no where to be found. About 15 minutes later he shows up with the bill and asks them if they wanted their pies "to go".  We explained how the pie tasted "off" and the waiter says in a snobby kind of way "The chef makes the pie with sour cream! Sorry you didn't like it" and then walked away!  WHAT!  Nothing like "I am so sorry to hear that.  I will let the chef know" or "Can I get you another dessert instead"...NOTHING!
This place was such a disappointment and I would not recommend it!  It is not worth your time or money!!!

Wonderful food with a very reasonably priced summer menu for a 4 course meal - $36! A 3 course meal is $19 and probably would have been  enough. You can choose your appetizer, soup or salad, entree & dessert from a selection including duck, scallops & shrimp,  pasta, salmon & more. We were so impressed with the warm & personal greeting and the personalized, hand written card waiting for us at our table. This is old school desert dining at it's best. Great service, great food, great wait staff - what more can you ask for? Be sure to call in advance for a reservation. Dress is desert casual.

Great value, and Ginger is terrific.  Palm Springs at its old-school best!  We try to make it to Shame on the Moon everytime we come to PS, and we're never disappointed.  Celebrated my b'day here this year, and I was so glad I did.  The liver and onions w/ bacon was some of the best I've ever had!

great service, great food..... all at a great price.

a 3-course meal for $20?  Where can you get that these days?  we decided to stop in and give it a try.  we booked at 5:45 reservation and rolled over.

first of all, not really knowing much about the restaurant, we didn't expect someplace so nice and hip to be offering such a steal!  we were pleasantly surprised by the decor and ambiance.  then came the food... delish!  i had the angel hair pasta w/chicken.  seriously.  it was light, tasty, and better than what i had in mind.  also, their house salad was great too!!

overall, i highly recommend this place.  since i've only been there once, i can't speak to their consistency, but the prices are spot on and probably a little on the low end of what can be charging...

enjoy!!

First, I was greeted by this woman named Ginger who set the tone for the night by making me feel so welcome to her restaurant.  I can't recall a Hostess having such a positive immediate impact on me.  I found her people skills refreshing and when she reached over to give me a kiss on the cheek I realized her efforts weren't what one usually gets and there is something great and ok about that.  One might be thrown off how friendly she is but then her natural charm and customer service skills are so impressive you realize it's fine.  In fact, it's as I said, refereshing!  We sat down at a round table in the main dining room and found personalized welcome place cards on each of our plates which was an excellent touch!  (see pics) I started with a Cosmo.  My friend wanted to order an Arnold Palmer which is very common in the desert so I was surprised when they said they could not accomendate his request.  So he had the Ice Tea.  Many of us at the table chose the price-fixed four course meal as it's a nice selection for only $39!  The hot soup was better than the cold soup which I found to have too much onion for my tastes.  I selected the Ahi tar tar which was sooooo good!  I ordered a glass of the Hess Cab too probably because I had just come from seeing the new Julia Child movie and it seemed like she was always enjoying a Martini or a glass of red wine.  Those who have seen this brilliant film will probably understand why I got the Long Island Duck.  Also, I was dining with a friend of mine who is a Chef and he recommended it too.  I found it had a nice crispy texture to it and it was bathed in a tasty sauce.  I think Julia would of approved.  I capped off a great evening having their  vanilla ice cream in berries with Grand Marnier served by an attentive staff who never dropped the ball.  Special credit to the wait staff for handling some poor older woman who had obviously messed up with having too many cocktails with her prescription meds and had to be removed from her table by a staff that did it discretely and left the woman with some level of dignity.  I haven't been to this restaurant in years but after such a great night, I can tell you I will be coming back sooner!

We took friends to dinner there about a month ago.  Our appetizers were great - had the ahi tartar (yum!) but my mushroom ravioli tasted flat and overcooked.  My friends enjoyed their dinner, and the dessert Napoleon was exquisite.  Service and drinks, as always, were superb.  I think they need help in the kitchen because the food quality does not match the great service.

Apparently this restaurant has been in the valley for many years. However due to an invite by friend Roberta I went.

We were so warmly greeted as we entered. Our Server Gregory immediately offered drinks and was flawless at the way he serviced our table of six people. I was so impressed. I couldn't believe how well priced the en tree's where. I had the glazed salmon with grilled fennel and garlic mashed potatoes and it was done up to perfection. Oh and now I have to mention that this dinner ended with the best desert and good coffee. I will definitely be back. This was such a surprise hit!

Shame on the Moon is a top notch restaurant... kind of how I imagine how the good ol' days were. Service is always first class with that old school charm you probably can't find anywhere else other than somewhere like this area.

The maître d' is Ginger who has a very warm and kind personality. She will always want to greet you with a kiss and a hug, so if you're the type of person who doesn't like that type of interaction then this restaurant probably isn't for you. Not that any of the other workers will do the same but they'll have almost as much warmth and kindness as her. We usually only go to this place 3-4 times a year but our regular server, Tony, still knows what we prefer to drink. Very impressive memory, especially when rattling off the specials for the day off the top of his head. I couldn't do that even if my life depended on it.

Decor is again very old school and almost feels like you've stepped back at least a decade or so, but in a good way. I usually prefer the seating in the main dining area. There's usually a huge bouquet of flowers in the middle of the room which again adds more of that old charm.

The menu is definitely catered towards the more mature clientele that frequents this place so nothing will be excessively spicy or exotic. None of the entrees are boring, however.

Started off with the house soup (chicken, rice, veggies) and the Caprese salad (mozzerella, tomatoes, basil chiffonade, thin slices of red onion and olive oil/balsamic vinegar drizzled on top). The soup was good but won't knock your socks off. The tomato/mozzaerella salad was good with the right amount of flavors to make each bite enjoyable.

I chose the fish of the day, swordfish with a very mildly spicy sauce served over rice and green and yellow string beans. Everything complemented each other so well and couldn't be better. My friend got the fillet mignon which was topped with bleu cheese and served with mixed veggies and potato cake. The steak was done perfectly but the potato cake was only okay, and the mixed veggies could have been better. I'm glad I had the string beans instead.

We finished off the meal with the peanut butter pie w/ pecan ice cream. It had a chocolate cookie crust and topped with a thin layer of chocolate and sprinkled with... what else but peanuts? The peanut butter part was almost like a mousse so it wasn't too thick or heavy. Great if you love peanut butter. There were small circles of raspberry sauce adorning the plate to enjoy with the pie--almost tastes like a pb&j sandwich.

I got a glass of Cabernet which was priced very reasonably just like the rest of their alcohol list. The bar always seems like a fun and entertaining place to spend the evening.

I wouldn't say that this restaurant is picture perfect but it's so close it deserves 5 stars. Everything is fairly priced, service is second to none, and the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. Maybe it won't appeal to the modern foodie but that makes reservations easier for me.

I do feel bad giving this place three stars...it should be more like 3.5 stars. Oh and it should be noted that our waiter, Robert, deserves 10 stars...he was a delight. I was sad to say goodbye. Speaking of goodbyes, the owner is the woman that seats you and holds the door open when you leave. She also kisses everyone goodbye. I appreciate her willingness to spread her joy but I was just not in the mood so I took a step back and held out my hand for a good old shake. OK and now on to the good stuff.
I ordered the salmon crusted in wasabi. I could not taste the wasabi but it was still good. The mushroom pasta dish was great but skip the skirt steak. It was nothing to write home about.

The wines are very reasonably priced.

We love this place.  We usually go mid-week, so I can't comment on weekend fare or service.

We visited last Tuesday for a birthday and had a wonderful dinner.  Now, one of the main reasons you go here is for the ambiance-- it's got great big tables with white table cloths, comfortable large booths, a lively conversational buzz throughout.  It's old P.S., and it's very gay friendly.  When I say that, I mean it is staffed predominantly by very friendly gays.  We love them.

That we are always treated with great care here ,and a uniformly fabulous experience, keeps us returning year after year.  Also-- primo people watching opportunities!   Were talking reality tv show calibre!!  You see a bevy of old 'industry' folks scattered around, many whom are gamely sporting very tan hides and interesting combinations of plastic surgery.  Also, that fun over the top Nordstrom type clothing.  I really can't get enough of it.   I hope I do it with such panache when I'm that age (but more sunscreen).

OK-- the food.  Waiter man gave us good recs, we had: rack of lamb, seared ahi, special shrimp/scallops, and the duck. All were solid and well done comfort food.  The dishes here are very old school-- there is NOTHING fancy or unusual, it's what you expect and that's that.  Seasoning is a little on the bland side-- and this is probably due to the older clientele.

Bottles of wine are exceptionally reasonable.

I always feel like I'm in an old movie when I go here.  They greet you as if you are a regular and are truly invested in your having a good experience.

Come here to dine, not eat-- and bring a lot of friends!!  Cocktails are also excellent (last visit we had lemon drop martinis).

A true PS experience, I'd definitely recommend going to dinner at least once while your in the springs.

USE to be great...now...not so much.  Love Ginger at the door...she always remembers me by name (love that) and Johnny, the bartender, whom I have known for years, is the best in town!  Now, down to the nitty gritty...food is "OK' (use to be excellent)...service (depending on who you get) is "OK" at best...(I go by the 20 minute rule as well).  The place gets "gayer" the later you make your reservation.  Bar is small and usually filled unless you are an early bird or later in the evening.  (Everyone loves Johnny.)  Still, I have to say, even though I do not live in the desert anymore, it is a good bet you will have a wonderful time!

we went here over labor day weekend with the family.  most of us did the special menu for 3 courses for $19.  thought about doing the 4 course for $36 but figured it would be too much.  thank goodness we went with the 3 course!  usually, for prix fixe menus, the portions are reduced.  not the case at this restaurant.  definitely great value and the service was superb.  we were pretty hungry when we got there so the bread tasted heavenly.  i think we got at least 2 basket fulls and we only had 6 people in our party.  i had the liver and although it was a lot of liver for me personally, it was divine.  my husband had the rib eye - which was very tasty and my sister had the salmon.  i do not think she enjoyed her salmon very much unfortunately.  all in all, i would highly recommend.  definitely an old school vibe and the clientele (at least when were were there - 630 pm) was a bit older.  i would come back to visit shame on the moon the next time we head out to rancho...
