This place is awesome. Not the cheapest place, but delicious food. Everything we had was great. Vegetable samosas came with some kind of chickpea stuff that was tasty. The sauces were incredible. They had paneer naan, which was great (and I had never seen that before). The yoghurt sauce was a nice touch. We had a lentil soup that had great flavor.
We had chicken coconut korma and chicken tiikka masala. Both were great. The service was attentive (almost overly so). And we were stuffed. Not sure why people complain about the portions. I liked the atmosphere. I will go again for sure. -

So the last time I went here, I was treated like a 5 year old kid. Not too impressed with that service. The tandori chicken probably had extra sugar in it and less veggies since they assumed I was 5. The waitress thought I was a big boy for passing the menus to her. She warned me that my food was hot.
Food was good, but it's not really worth the high price. -
Review from Sonia C.
I thought that the food her was pretty average. We ordered the chicken vindaloo, a vegetable curry, and an order of garlic naan. Both of the entrees came with a massive amount of basmati but the entrees themselves were pretty small. We could've definitely used more meat. The vegetable curry seemed to be mostly potatoes, not an assortment that we were led to believe. The flavors themselves were fine, but our specified medium level of spiciness was definitely more mild. If you're looking for medium, order it hot!
The worst thing about our meal was that our garlic naan came barely warm. We had to eat it quickly so it was still palatable.
We had a groupon so our bill ended up being quite affordable, but since the prices here are as high if not higher than other Indian restaurants in the city, and the food is definitely not better, we probably won't be returning. -

Don't do it. Bad food, worse service. The goat curry was more gristle than meat, with unadvertised chunks of bone & a greasy slick on top. The sauce was alright, but it was all-over the most unappetizing substances. The vegetable tikka was lacking in sauce almost entirely, however, & more-or-less flavorless.
The potatoe-tikki appetizer was tasty enough, but made in a cookie-cutter style which was remarkably soul-less for an Indian place.
And the service, or lack thereof. Heck, when there was service, it was enough to make one wish for a lack thereof. My gentleman friend was convinced that our waitress was tired of life, seized in an existential crisis of not giving a hoot wherein her absence of smiles & service were the only sensible answer.
I myself at first thought that she took us for wanker college students & thus treated us poorly. So I watched her stone-face, arhythmic waltz around the room, serving the other tables. Equally atrocious. The only fervor she showed was in a nice, distant, & accurate pour of water from the pitcher to the glass. Seriosuly, that was it.
So we asked for the check, and after ignoring us for what seemed a reasonable time--much averse to eye-contact was our lady--she proceeded to pointedly find other things to do. We went up to the front desk, I found our bill from among the group of bills on the desk, & we squared our tab. No tip. For the record, I generally tip at least 20-25% at any meal, I used to wait tables. But this was Richard Scarry's Worst Indian Restaurant Ever. Run, don't walk away from Shalimar.
Oh, & when the server saw us squaring the check without her giving us the check, she said more words than she'd shared with us that evening, but they weren't in English, else I'd let you know. -

As a connoisseur of Indian cuisine I feel it is my duty to ensure that the cook here stops what he is doing and changes his career to something ...anything...please slowly step away from the grill sir!
We went here because somebody gave us a groupon that they could not use. Well beware of Friends bearing gifts! Service was beyond atrocious...we initially had a woman taking our order after about 20 minutes of waiting she finally gave us the pleasure of her company. She really did not seem to know anything. No real recommendations anything. After taking the order we did not get any water for another 20 minutes. Finally the food showed up. Well some of it. The main course came before our appetizer. Bad service can easily be overcome by awesome food. That was not to be.
The lahori fish was deep fried (they dont say that in the menu). Deep fried and soggy. The chutney it came just seemed like a sad ungrateful friend. We also got the chana and the kofta. Skip the Kofta, drive to Trader Joes and pickup the frozen one. The Kofta basically tasted like what I imagine wet cardboard would taste like. Pretty sure I know now.
One saving grace was that the ambience in the place was pretty nice. But I'm really reaching for something nice to say here. -

Yum! I was pleasantly surprised by the food at Shalimar. My boyfriend and I were in need of a quick bite to eat before a show at nearby McCaw Hall and saw that Shalimar had tables available. We split an order of the Vegetable Kashmiri and Chicken Tikka Masala, both of which were fantastic! I'd had lots of tikka masala dishes before but this was among the creamiest and richest. The Kasmiri veggies were different and SO good - I highly recommend this, even for non-vegetarians! A side of garlic naan completed a hearty and affordable meal. Shalimar may not be among the least expensive dining options on the Ave, but it certainly won't disappoint (and keep an eye out for Groupon Now! specials, which is how we discovered it).

This place is fine if you have a hankering for Indian food and you can't be bothered to go ten blocks north. The prices are pretty high for what you get I think, although the servings for their "penny pincher" menu are very generous. I am never wowed when I come here and frankly, I only go if I'm with someone who really wants to go.
Also their chai isn't that great. -
Review from Jenny L.
This place is normally pretty expensive, but I bought a Groupon so I tried this place out. It's pretty decent...not amazing. Portions look small, but are filling. We ordered the butter chicken and the jaipuri chicken. I would recommend the jaipuri chicken. The spices in this dish are delicious!
On their website, they say they have validated parking, but when I called, they said they discontinued it! -

The food was dry and stale-tasting. It tasted like bad leftovers. Honestly, I have never had a bad Indian food restaurant experience, so forget this place. I did.

2 stars for the food and prices... 4...ish for the service. This is more of a 2.5 star place.
My friend got the chana mansala and I got the chicken tikki masala. There was nothing awful about my food, but there was nothing AMAZING about it either. My chicken tikki masala ended up costing around 15.35 without tip, and they don't even provide you with that much food for its costs. Comparing it to my favorite Indian place... (Taste of India).. the serving size was subpar and in fact, a tad more expensive.
That being said the building was nicely decorated, open, and the servers always kept refilling my water. There seemed to be a sense of disconnect though, they weren't there to make you feel good or conversate.. they just wanted to fill your water.
My suggestion, skip this place... or try it once since it's in a good location. I've had better. -

This place has a really great atmosphere. They have a wall of fountains and candles and really cool lighting that turns dinner into a bit of a vacation. The food is mid-range and slightly on the pricey side. It's a little Americanized with a higher emphasis on sweetness and less on spice; vegetables are a little lacking. Overall, though, the food is tasty and consistent and the service is attentive but not overly so.

Despite a lot of negative reviews, we enjoyed the food. Yes, the portions are not huge, but neither are they at other good Indian places, like Cedars. We ordered some of the dishes suggested by others and had a nice meal. Our 2 year old loved the food and they were really accommodating to us (we were also totting a 4 month old). The service was not warm and fuzzy, but it's the U District and the tips in general are probably not stellar.
Overall, good food, easy parking and speedy service (just in case your kids start to melt down like ours did).
P.s. they validate parking, it we forgot and parked at a meter just outside. Check their website for instructions, -

Ok, gave this place a second chance since they're the closest Indian restaurant from school.
Food: Solid 3 stars. It's fits the definition "A-OK" perfectly. The food is good, not spectacular, not inedible.
But, those cheats OVERCHARGED us. Ordered the chicken sandwich and the chicken curry off of the penny pincher menu, made it very clear we were ordering off of the penny pincher menu. That should be 6.75+6.95+tax. How did it come to $17?? Considering they charged $17 flat, I'm guessing that there wasn't any REAL number crunching involved. I did the math, the tax would have to be around 25% for the final cost to be near $17. I hate dishonest businesses.
Check your bill before you pay to make sure you're not cheated as well!!!!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

I usually go here for lunch to get one of the penny pincher specials ... which usually ends up being one of their open-faced naan sandwiches and a mango lassi. I'm not sure whether other Indian places do this type of dish, but I think it is a great idea. You get a full piece of Naan covered in yummy goodness.
I've also had the Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken here and they taste pretty typical, nothing that blows you away, but not bad either. Unfortunately, the spice level at this place is a bit lacking on most of the other dishes I've tasted.
Overall, they are a decent spot on the Ave for lunch/dinner. But I wouldn't go so far to say they are the best Indian in town or even in the near vicinity. If the open-faced naan sandwiches are hard to come by then I would recommend you try it out just for the sandwiches!
Oh and they also do popular dishes on pasta now, too. Different and a bit strange, but I hear it's good. -

Came here today with my brother for dinner since he was craving some Indian food. Whenever I eat Indian I always get the Lamb Tikka Masala.
The last time I came here I remembered it to be too sweet and not as good as the other Indian restaurants in Seattle. I think this time we got a different chef because it was actually better than I remembered! The only difference is they don't give as much curry as other places, but the meat was very tender, hot and delicious. However, the prices are still a little bit iffy, especially for an Ave restaurant.
Unless you're gonna get the penny pincher or have a coupon like we did, I would just suggest going to another Indian Restaurant nearby. -

This place is good, if you order the signature items they know how to cook.
I ordered the shrimp openface sandwich on naan. Since it was about half the price of the larger signature entrees like chicken tandoori, I figured it would be small yet meticulously prepared. I'd been to Shalimar once before and thoroughly enjoyed a heavily discounted ($9) chicken masala (I think) special. I also figured the shrimp would be decent, because this is Seattle. My experience was quite the opposite.
First off, the sandwich was HUGE. Take your average dinner plate, then make it bigger and more oblong, then pile 3 inches of white rice across the whole thing. The naan was the size of a horse's face and was too chewy to eat, the shrimp was dry and could have been dried to begin with, and the rice was decent, but... it was just rice. All in all, with the exception of a mound of sauce in one corner I mistakenly ate in a single bite, it was dry and near inedible. Lots of food for $7, but hardly even worth it.
Stick to the signature dishes: meat with curry sauce and rice. Even the IPA seemed a little off. And if you're sensitive to spice like me, definitely go mild/very mild as well. My dad got medium chicken tandoori and, albeit tasty, it made me cry.
Service was decent but nothing noteworthy. I always order a water without ice and they never managed to pull that off despite my cries of discontentment. Our server, who I believe was the owner's daughter, was very nice though, and very attractive :D. -
Review from Micah A.
Shalimar has long been my go-to spot for Indian food on the Ave. I have been going here since it was on the corner that was later occupied by 17 other restaurants before settling as a bakery. It has considerably less botulism than Cedars, it's emptier, it's prettier, the food tastes better and it's not a raging piece of crap like its nearest competitor.
It had been a while since I had been back though. I used to come here once every few weeks with my ex girlfriend for almost 2 or 3 years. After we broke up, I started bringing various friends there, including female friends, and the waitress that I believe is the wife of the owner (or at the very least has been working there for years) started glaring at me and giving me mean faces for coming with unfamiliar women and I started to feel uncomfortable and stopped coming as often.
But I sucked it up and went there today, so I figured it was time to write a review about it. Let's go.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Location!
Its current building used to be held by this horrendous buffet that I think white people liked because it helped them feel like they were doing something ethnic. It's got a pretty decent amount of space, and although I wish they would seat people at the booths more often than the smaller chairs near the window, it's not really a big deal. It's a nice place that they keep warm and cozy.
Service!
I struggle with this, since service is regular - they take my order, they fill my water, they otherwise leave me alone. That's good service for me. I don't really want to talk to the servers. Still, is that good service? Who knows. But bonus points to the server that thought I was cheating on my girlfriend, because I respect a lady that looks out for others.
Food!
I have a strange feeling their meat is terrible because they do not get very good reviews, despite being the best Indian food I've ever tasted. All of my friends like it though, and they eat meat, so I don't get it. I think people just think it's cool to like Cedars. It isn't. Cedars sucks. Shalimar's vegetarian meals are delicious. Their palak is great, their palak paneer is great, their naan is great.
I almost knocked them down a star though for selling out to whitey, because when I went to Shalimar today after a several month hiatus, I saw they added Indian pasta to their menu. That's Indian food ON TOP of pasta. I don't know what weirdo thought that was a good idea, but I guarantee you it was a white person in their mid-40's that likes herbal medicine.
Still, for gits and shiggles I decided to try the "Palak Paneer Pasta" (gag) and it was actually not bad, and the portion was huge. So okay, it's a terrible idea and completely useless, but it wasn't that bad so I decided not to dock the point.
Overall!
Cedars sucks.Listed in: Great
This food at this place is amazing. I've been going to Shalimar for a while now; it has had its rocky points, but I've noticed things are much more consistent now and the food is back on track.
I've tried most everything on the menu, but I usually order the Patia (which is outstanding) with garlic naan. The Aloo Tikki is pretty top-notch as well. -
Showed up for a late lunch. Got the paneer pakora, butter chicken (medium spicy) and garlic naan. The service was fast and polite, and everything was delicious. The pakora came out quickly, but the batter was flaky and warm, and it just melted in my mouth. No opinion on the chutney, just enjoyed the pakora as-is. The chicken was great, the rice was cooked just right, and the sauce was rich and savory, while leaving just a faint tingling of spicy heat behind.
Definitely plan on coming back. -
My husband, 3 year old, and I were wandering down the Ave and decided to try a restaurant we have not dined in before. We decided to give Shalimar a shot.
I think the decor is the only thing going for them, they should have invested in their ingredients and chefs instead. A restaurant can look charming and all, but if your food is awful, it won't have a leg to stand on.
We ordered Pakoras, Vegetarian Bhuna, Chicken Buryani, and Chai. The most bland Indian food we have ever had. My Chai tasted like scalded milk; It did not taste of Chai at all. My husband's Buryani appeared to be yellow curry, rice, and chicken pieces only; The Pakoras were not so great and my Bhuna was bland and unlike any I have had at the numerous Indian restaurants we have been patrons of around the country.
This is the first place we have dined at in which we truly felt as if we were being swindled of our money. We will certainly stick to Annapurna for our Indian cravings. -
My Fiance and I went to Shalimar last night, because we had a Groupon to use. When we got there, we were seated right away. They put us back by the kitchen, but that was OK. We ordered Chicken Samosas for appetizer and they were actually very good. We liked the sauces that came with it. Then for dinner, we split the Lamp Jaipuri, which is their signature entree. And we also ordered Spinach Naan. The food came, and the Jaipuri was pretty good, the lamb was tender and fell apart. Spinach naan was so-so. I have had much better. While we were eating, I kept noticing a fruit fly flying around. So just shooed it away, no biggie. But THEN, all of a sudden I saw a cockroach crawling behind my fiancees head!! I told him about it and he tried to flick it off his seat, but then it just landed on the sidewall of our booth. I lost my appetite watching it crawl around, so I couldn't eat anymore, wondering what the little black dots were in our curry! Soon it crawled over to my side and went underneath the table. I immediately stood up. And the waitress thought we were leaving, so she said, "bye! Thanks for coming in!" And I'm like, "um, no. . . I'm just going to stand!" So then I sat on the same side as my fiance and we were both on the very edge of the seat super close together! The waitress asked if we were doing OK, and kind of laughed, because we must have looked crazy! LOL We left shortly after that and vowed to never go there again! YUCK.
The lamb curry and lentil soup are amazing. In general the food is rich and flavorful, moreso than Taste of India down the road. The naan has crispy edges and a warm fluffy center. Great service too.
The only thing keeping me from adding that 5th star is the price. Just on the edge of overpriced. -
Review from Le M.
Seven itty-bitty cubes of chicken tikka and barely half a plate of dry, low quality long grain rice that's bordering to dessicated are not worth fourteen bucks! The sizzling bed of onions and veggies lost their sizzle and look pitifully limp on iron plate. Nothing's worse than dry bismati rice. It sucks the moisture out of your mouth, leaving you parched.
The portion of butter chicken is even worse. Scooped out of the sauce bowl, the bite pieces of chicken are probably half a chicken breast if uncut. Again, not worth fourteen bucks!
The naan? I finally found a leavened bread I'd rather leave behind.
If this is how their full-price menu meal is like, I can't wrap my mind on the penny-pincher menu! I'd rather you pinch me to drive me out of this place than save money. I wonder why it's decently rated in Yelp.
The only thing going for Shalimar is it's clean interior. Cleanliness maybe next to godliness, but running the manual carpet sweeper back and forth with a rickety noise around diners is disconcerting. The service is dry as the rice. -
Review from Ariel Z.
The food is decent, though not spectacular, but I find everything here to be overpriced. The atmosphere is clean and open and comfortable, though the service is a little slow, usually. The "penny pincher" menu is nice, though I hardly order off of it. I enjoy the variety of items and that my "extra spicy" dishes actually come out fairly spicy (I like my food reaaaaally spicy). It's the closest Indian restaurant on The Ave, so it's convenient, or else we wouldn't come here.
I went here for lunch today. Had one of the openface sandwiches, the tandoori chicken sandwich. It was good.
The thing about Indian food for me is that the meat always tastes overcooked, but intentionally overcooked. That's weird to me. Also, naan bread tastes kind of like pancakes. -
Although the food wasn't awful, it certainly did not justify the prices. Extremely mediocre food and higher than average prices. We chose to go to Shalimar because we didn't want to walk all the way to Taste of India, Cedars, or Tandoor. In that respect, if you want food that isn't awful and you don't have to walk very far from campus for, Shalimar will do the job. Also, the building is pretty nice. Still though, with a myriad of Indian food options on or near The Ave, I probably wouldn't choose Shalimar again.
I ordered the daal, hot, and it was very good. Service was good, waitress didn't say much to me, but not in an offending manner. Food was brought out promptly. The atmosphere was quite nice and relaxing, but I went at a time when they weren't busy. I enjoyed my meal very much.
Mmm Shalimar... I remember back when you changed locations from the corner of 42nd and the ave to your current locale and I was so mad that you replaced the all-you-can-eat vegetarian Indian lunch buffet. I wanted to hate you but I couldn't help but love you after I found a 2 for 1 coupon in the Husky Survival Kit (available quarterly at the UW bookstore).
Even moreso, I love you for your mango curry dish. No, I don't remember the precise name of the dish, but I DO know that it has mango, curry, chicken, and is all delicious. *drool*
I can't live without my diet coke... and you give it to me in a somewhat fluted glass so that I feel classy. Not only that, but you keep it refilled so I never go thirsty. Thank you Shalimar. Thank you.Listed in: All-you-can-eat is…
The decor is pretty. Shalimar is on the Ave- yet when you walk in the doors you feel like you are somewhere else. The prices are a little interesting for dinner- they seemed highversus my other favorites- Qazi and Roti.
I did find that there are cheaper express items that are ideal for lunch. I ordered the Aloo Palak and was happy to note that it came with rice and a side salad. The Aloo Palak was not as thick as what I am use to and the potatoes were too hard for my taste. The rice was just fine, and the salad was bagged salad with a tasty yogurt cucumber dressing. The portions were right for lunch time and the bill was about $6... not bad. The food was flavorful- just not outstanding.
I think I would come back again for lunch. My service was pleasant and the food comforting. Shalimar was a great place to each lunch and read while dining. -
I love this place. My kids love this place. We come here for everyone's B-day dinners, they love it so much. Their tandoori menu is fantastic, and they have super lunch menus. I have brought my extended family (with children) and they accomodated our large, noisy, and bouncy group with no problem. Everyone left very happy!
It is expensive, that is true, but it is our favorite. Some things to consider:
1) Depending on who's in the kitchen, the level of hotness and spices can vary and/or be unpredictable
2) Depending on how busy they are food can take a while to arrive and there may only be a few servers.
However, it is a family owned business and I am willing to deal with the above things because I like the family and I love the food like a junkie loves crack. -
I am easily overwhelmed with choices, and they have a lot of choice here.
I used to jump around and order different things, and kept coming back for my 'peas n cheese' (matar paneer) but it was $13 for lunch! Come on! Tack on the naan (you HAVE to have naan at an Indian place), and you've spent just under $20 for lunch..on the Ave..for yourself. Um. Yah. It's tasty, but that's dinner prices you're talking about.
But then! I discovered their "sandwiches"..for about $8, you get a full piece of naan topped with rice, salad, saucey stuff, and either fish/chicken/beef/falafel.
It is like the best of everything! Huge portions, when you are hungry..and I mean, really hungry, it will hurt you to eat it all..but I have..er, you can. It's enough for two, reheating is kind of eh because you've mixed your hot and cold stuff together. I still do it though.
They have this new 'budget' lunch menu..smaller portions for about $6. Not bad. But...I need my sandwich!
Come here either before or after that prime lunch hour, because they are always busy during lunch. I love their new (few years old by now) venue..much more spacious and nice ambiance. We've been coming here for years now, and they always remember us. :) -
This was so incredibly good. I adore good indian food, and I've only been here a few times. Todays visit was out of the park though. A friend and I wandered in for lunch. I had the chicken jaipuri and she had Aloo Chole somehting or other. I was so engrossed in the creamy sauce and the chunky chicken in my dish to pay attention to hers. The chicken was tender and flavor full the sauce was creamy but spicy and clung to the rice for tender bites.
Yum. I dont know why I dont come in here often, but I think I'll be changing that soon.Listed in: Date Night Girlie Style
I've worked in the U-District for 8 years, and always wanted to go into this place... it always looked so inviting! Well, yesterday, me and my old lady were going to see a movie, and decided to grab a bite here. Glad we did... pretty great food. We got the basics... butter chicken, nan, rice...you know the drill. It was all great, and fairly cheap. (I wish i could say the same for the movie) The waitress, did, however, bring us regular nan, when we ordered the garlic nan.... and all the servers seemed to disapear for our entire meal...so no five star!!!!!
But seriously, if you have a need to sop up yummy Indian sauce in the u-district anytime soon... check this place out!! -
My friends and I went to Shalimar as a party of six and it was a little disappointing. The food itself was delicious and relatively well-priced for the amount you received. The service, however, was terrible. After being seated, we waited nearly 30 minutes before our orders were taken. We waited probably another 20 minutes for the actual food to be delivered. Fortunately, the food was well worth the wait.
Pros: Good food, decent portions
Cons: Terrible service, slow all around -
Visited Shalimar for an improptu late lunch. We were shown into a pretty seating area and the server didn't hesitate when I requested one of the empty seats by the window.
We were handed a menu of low cost specials and decided to order from that. I ordered the potato palak and an order of naan. Husband ordered a chicken curry.
On the bad side, the server didn't ask me about spice levels. The Palak that came out was really too spicy for me to eat despite the underlying flavor being good. It came with rice and a little salad.
I suspect that had the spice level been less hot, I would have really enjoyed my meal. -
I always get the distinct feeling that the waitress here hates me. Maybe it's because I only order off the penny pincher menu, maybe it's simply because they work in a restaurant on the ave and are hella tired of serving college kids. Who knows? Who cares?
I don't. I keep coming back. I think I've grown to love their cold service and steely stares. Plus, the penny pincher menu is a good deal and the food is always pretty damn good.
There are a couple of things i really like about shalimar -
- the food, which has always been good (every once in a while the chicken will be a bit dry, etc - but usually i'm going for the sauces and not the meat)
- quick service
- no TVs in the main dining area.... Usually i'm not a big stickler for ambiance, but shalimar is NICE. without being overly so... its just.... tasteful.
- they can accommodate different sized groups well .... 2-4 person tables up front, 4-6ish sized booths a bit further back, and a little sectioned off section with tables that can be pushed together for larger 6-12 sized groups.
- they don't mind separating bills out for smaller groups (4 people is fine to all get separate - they just bill you at the register for what you ate).
(I'm not sure why i'm not giving them 5 stars, i guess they just don't ever really push me over into that OMIGOD range.)
