I work in the neighborhood and go for lunch often. The ambiance leaves a lot to be desired, but I would say the food  is as good as inexpensive indian food gets.

I've come here a few times, just recently, this past Monday and went in for lunch.
I know I ordered Garlic Naan and some chicken special. I went to my table and they dropped off something that looked like a donkey dick. I ate it and it was good. Then my Chicken whatever it was I ordered came, that was good. When I went to pay, asked what was the donkey dick all about and he said it was a kebab meant for the other table and he mistakenly gave it to me. He then asked me if he should charge me and I told him I deep throated that donkey dick like there was no tomorrow, please charge me and here is a $5 tip for the experience.

The food is good, and I had a good time at this place. I left very satisfied.

You know a place is authentic when your cashier is also the chef and your waiter, and they do nothing with the interior design or plating of the food to impress you.  Granted, I came on a Monday afternoon the day after Christmas.  I've been to the other locations at normal people's dinner time, and the place is hoppin'...and smoky...love the vibe!

Ok, damn I LOVE Indian food. This place is a hole in the wall but I love their dishes. I met up with my bf and SF friends here for dinner. We ordered the lamb and spinach curry, chicken tikka masala, chicken kofta, and chicken kebab. We also had Garlic and Butter Naan with basmati rice. YUmmm, I will go back in a damn heart beat!

Came here for lunch.  The food was not good and the place just made me feel like I needed to wear latex gloves just to be there.

When I tried to leave, I got cornered a flock of six filthy pigeons flying all round the entrance.  Totally disgusting flying rats.  Pigeons are one of my biggest fears so this was a problem.  I know, I'm totally living in the wrong city with a phobia like this.

I've passed this place enough to wonder why it always gets so packed. So I decided to skip my usual Indian haunt, Darbar, and give shalimar a try instead.

The inside of Shalimar is less then stellar. It's kind of shabby and run down. It's also very huge and impersonal. You walk in, look at a giant menu in front of the register and order your food and then you find a table a wait..

The food comes out pretty quickly. I got the chicken tikka masala, jasmine rice and garlic naan. It's was pretty good. The masala was a little sweeter then what I'm used to but it was still pretty delicious. The naan and rice were also pretty good. I think that really sells this place is that they are BYOB, so you can pop into the liquor store across the street, pick up a 6 pack and then enjoy your dinner with some IPA's.

I could see myself coming back with more friends and some booze, but by myself and based on the food, I'm not sure I would come back.

    TIP: BYOB! BYOB!

Wow, the most disgusting Indian/Pakistani food I've had in a LONG time. Enjoy your bowl of curry drenched with ghee? Bleh.

    We ordered:
    - plain naan (it was super dry, doughy, and they don't slice it into pieces for you, so prepare to eat like a jaanver)
    - rice
    - chicken tikka masala (mediocre at best)
    - aloo keema with chicken (bleh...SOAKED in ghee)

Have a strong stomach if you plan to frequent this place. That is all.

P.S. As I ate here, I was thinking about how the food quality at Naan N Curry may be superior. If that doesn't say something, I dunno what does.

If I had to describe Shalimar in one word: Smoky. The interior of the restaurant smells so strongly of smoke that I prefer to dine outside, even on a chilly SF night.

However, when it comes to the food, the smokiness is a good thing. The sooty, grilled essence permeates the meat in the entrees and is a great contrast to the rich, creamy sauces. I tried the chicken korma, chicken tikka masala, and chicken saag. The chicken korma and tikka masala were just ok, but the chicken saag was OUTSTANDING. I can't recall ever having had such good chicken saag. Maybe it was the fresh spinach? My only gripe with the entrees were the whole peppercorns used in the entrees.

Served over a bed of fragrant basmati rice and with a side of garlic naan, the food here was filling and satisfying.  If you can get past the smoky interior and hole-in-the-wall ambiance, you'll be rewarded with hearty, extremely cheap Pakistani fare.

And as an added plus, their complimentary chai tea is delicious and an ideal way to start off the meal.

Are you craving that feeling that you are actually in India?  Then five stars soldier!

I am not afraid of a dirty authentic place.  But, this Shalimar kind of trots over that imaginary border of permissible.  I have sweet sweet memories from the Shalimar in Union Square (which, mind you, is not a Mr. Clean commercial in any stretch).  When you see the dude butchering meat barehanded and then in the next swoop, bringing out your water pitcher (barehanded again), you just shut your eyes, find your happy place, and dream sweet dreams of bleach.

The food is really quite solid - good spices, tasty daal, prices are again awesome, amount of food is small to reasonable.  You want to travel to India while on Polk Street?  Go for it.  And on the flip side, if you get sick, you will be at your own apartment/house.  Or just head east and go to the Shalimar in Union Square (which is a step up in cleaniness but a step down in neighborhood).

What the hell happened to this place?  Their food used to be so good.  It's been three years or so since my last visit, and it feels like a completely different restaurant.  The portions are smaller, and the quality went down the drain.  The naan is no longer soft, the rice was mushy and clumpy, which is not the consistency you expect for basmati rice.  We ordered two curries, both of which barely had any meat in it.  Number 17, which is usually my favorite curry, only had two small pieces of chicken.  The curry w/ the beef shank only had two small pieces of beef.  The sad part is, because the food tasted so terrible, the three of us couldn't even finish what little meat we had.  I hate to say it, but this recent visit will likely be my last.

Delicious! I had the paneer masala with a side of naan to go. Cost me $8.60. I was expecting a longer wait, since the place was pretty crowded, but in under ten minutes I got called over to my masala.. Just when I was about to ask about the naan that I had ordered, a man pulled one out of the oven and placed it in the bag.

Super fresh and delicious, yes a bit greasy, but bomb.

Delicious food, the ambiance fits what a good Pakistani place should be: smoky, with minimal decorations, hot and crowded.  Don't come here if you want friendly service or pampering. Here its all about the food.  You go to the counter to order, the man at the front is usually very brusque.  They will generally explain what the items on the menu to customers but they are not good-natured about it. After you order they will tell you to sit down and pay later.

The lamb here is delicious and the palak paneer has wonderful texture and flavor.  Really though all the dishes have been wonderful and the Naan is fresh and hot.

Shalimar is my standby Indian place when I have an Indian craving.  Even though it's a little dirty, I always walk out full and satisfied.  My wife and I always get some combination of the Chicken Tikka Masala, Beef Jalfrezi, and/or the Saag Gosht (lamb and spinach dish), along with rice and naan.  I love the garlic naan there!  I'm sure there are other good things on the menu too, but we haven't been too adventurous there, especially since we don't go very often.  Solid, solid Indian place that has never let me down and will always be in our dinner rotation.

I lived in the UK for years and never wanted to eat Indian food, even though London is well known for having some of the best Indian food outside of India.  It wasn't until I returned to London last year that I FINALLY learned to love Indian food....gees what the f...was my problem!

Anyhow, I just discovered Shalimar a few weeks ago and I love it!  Yeah it's a hole in the wall...I mean a serious hole in the wall....looks dirty in the dining space, but we ate outside on the patio and it seemed pretty clean.  We ordered the usual, chicken tikki masala, spinach lamb, regular and garlic naan.  The flavors of the dishes were bold, spicy and yummy.  It may be a bit more oily than and unhealthy than other Indian places, but you know what for the cheap price and the tasty dishes...I'm ok with a little grease.  We ate for about $22...go here if you want yummy, cheap and cheerful!!

This place tries to emulate a 'dhaba' which is a type of roadside eatery you get around Indian highways known for having really cheap, heavy and spicy food. It does a pretty good job at that.
It's not a good idea to eat dhaba food too regularly, but this place is a really awesome occasional treat!
They have awesome vegetarian stuff.. order the Mili Juli Sabzi (a mixed vegetable) and Dal alongside onion kulchas which they will make right in front of you... thats a really heavy meal though.
5 stars for being the only dhaba-type indian restaurant in the city!!

It's not exactly a nice place. It's kinda smoky and you leave feeling like you probably smell of Tandoori chicken but I'm really okay with that. Order at the counter. Really good super fresh Naan.

    This place sucks !
To begin with this place has only a health score of 80% or a B -, Yikes!
But my husband ordered for pick up so he couldn't cancel, ones he got there.
The food was like a D+.  The naan was too thick, and the dough tasted very yeasty and nasty. The inside had raw garlic and entire pieces of  dried bay leafs and other dried herbs. As if that wasn't bad enough, the naan was burnt on the outside.
The tikka masala was a hot mess. The worst part was that it had whole pepper corns, cardamom seeds, and cloves, they didn't bother to strain  or puree them. Honestly, I stopped eating it after I unexpectedly bit on peppercorns and whole cloves, but I looked in the masala and it had soo many seeds and weird stuff that now I'm kind of scared of mystery sauces like this one.
I mean, I appreciate the fact that they are using lots of spices and all, but that is a choke hazard.

The less irritating thing about the masala, was that it had no cream or yogurt to balance the acidity of the tomato sauce.
Anyways, that is what I get for cheating on my fav Indian restaurant, Chutney !!

Good food and the price is right, but a few gripes prevent me from rating this higher than 3 stars:

*Lack of delivery--while every Indian joint in SF delivers (except for Lahore-Karahi, for obvious reasons), this place forgot the memo that some people are too stoned to get off their ass to pick up food, which is a key demographic of all Indian restaurants

*The actual joint--Dirty or maybe just old? Smelled strangely like Barbecue sauce (could NOT for the life of me put it on). The area is safe (then again I don't feel unsafe anywhere in SF save for a few spots in the SOMA and McAllister near Leavenworth

Grease--I know Indian food is known for being greasy, but this is pushing the limit. A chana dal shouldn't be hella greasy. it just shouldn't be.

I *always* get take-out because the atmosphere is horrendous: eating under fluorescent lights in a dirty kitchen......??

Get the palak paneer (spinach and cheese), chicken tikka masala, and one of the good lamb ones n you can't go wrong.

Shalimar is definitely the best Indian restaurant in the city. It's exactly what you'd expect of an inexpensive yet delicious Indian restaurant. I recommend the Chicken Tikka Masala! Don't be deterred by the basic appearance of the restaurant, it's delicious and you won't be overcharged by fancy decorations.

Good Indian food on lower Polk. It seems to be BYOB (well we brought our own wine and sat on their "patio"). There was just two of us eating, and I would recommend going with more people so you can order more to try a variety of items. Overall the food was really good and very inexpensive! Don't come here for nice, clean surroundings, but do come here for cheap, delicious Indian food. I know people who swear by this place, and when I came here for the first time last night, I was a little surprised at what I saw... a rather dirty kitchen/dining area, pretty much off white colored everything. Wasn't sure at first why this place could be loved so much.

My date and I ordered a beef kebab, rice, naan, Chicken Tikka Masala, and Chicken Aloo Keema.

I tried a bite of the tikka masala. It was alright, but honestly I loved my aloo keema a LOT better. It was quite filling though, and I was able to finish the whole plate. The naan was fluffy and warm, but not a whole lot of flavor. The rice was quite delicious, and so was the kebab. In fact, the kebab was really good. It just looks a little questionable when it comes out-- just a huge stick of beef.

My date and I decided to take a spot outside overlooking Polk street-- a much better option than sitting in the bland, indoor surroundings. Plus it was a nice warm evening.

All of this including 2 sodas and a tip came to $26 for 2 people, and that's with leftovers. Definitely don't be scared to try this place because of the hole-in-the-wall status. You've got to at least try the food. It's really yummy!

A WARNING please! Indian people! DO NOT take non-indians to this restaurant before you cause us epic embarrassment and get the indian consulate flooded with complaints.

This restaurant is what we in india call a dhaba. Delicious, cheap, and authentic food, with ZERO atmosphere and somewhat dodgy sanitary conditions. Non indian people are going to freak at it and think we're all a dirty unhygienic lot.

Good tikka, good naan, good chai, and some proper entertaining punjabi abuses from the customers talking amongst themselves. Get takeout.

More packed than I thought it would be. You can see the cooks make the naan and many of the curries right in front of you! The food was pretty good too.

Overwhelming benefit, however, is the BYOB policy, what with a liquor store right next door. So place your order, leave a person to grab a table, and get your drank on!

Solid, and if you bring a big group you can rearrange the tables and do some family style eating.  Dishes are a little on the small side, but if you get 1.25 dishes per person + naan, you're set.

My expectations were high when I entered Shalimar for the FIRST TIME last week!  Our lifetime SF buddy said that Shalimar is the best Indian food in the WHOLE city.

So...we walked in, grab the 20x30 menu (nice touch) and start marking what I want.  We ordered everything that looked good.  So I think we ended up with a good mix of food.

Can you say TIKKA MASALA?!  That was my favorite dish.  And it was the best chicken tikka masala I've ever had - by far!  I was wowed!  The chickpeas were also ridiculously yummy.  Everything was good.  The only dish I wasn't so sure about was the grilled lamb, it was way too chewy and every bite was quite the UNDERTAKING.

The dishes overall could have been a little spicier.  I found myself wanting to add spice, which I don't usually experience in an indian restaurant.

The prices were overly cheap - 6 entrees, rice, 4 orders of naan, and 3 mango lassis for $57.

Why four stars?  This is a topic of debate.  Their naan wasn't fresh OR warm and I don't think they knead their dough enough because it's too tough.  I actually even may like the frozen naan at Trader Joe's better.  So that was a huge disappointment and in many ways made the meal difficult to enjoy.

Will I be back again?  Yes!

My girlfriend and I decided to try this place because our usual Indian/Pakistani restaurant, Darbar, was for some reason closed across the street.

We walked in and the place looked awful. The guy at the counter didn't even tell us to sit down after we made our order. He just walked away without saying a word. The guy making the food (who seemed to be in charge) was constantly coughing all over the kitchen without covering his mouth, and had dirty fingernails. The floors and walls looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a year or two, and the tables and chairs looked fresh out of a flea market. It was grotesque to say the least.

We sat at a table and a guy brought water to us in a pitcher that looked murky and unclean. A young man and his mother walked in after us and sat at a table next to us. They got their food fifteen minutes before us.

I ordered a curry at the top of the menu listed as "The King of Curries" because I like to order what is considered the best, or standard, dish on the menu every time I try a new restaurant. The guy brought our food to us and it was not at all what we had ordered. We all then realized that the man and his mother who came in after us had been served our order.

I was nearly fed up with this place at that point and was ready to walk out. The rudeness, uncleanliness and order mix-up had taken their toll on me. It was then that the chef (the dirty fingernails guy I mentioned before) made me have a change of heart. He apologized so genuinely that I couldn't help but stay.

We waited another ten minutes or so, and then the dishes arrived. This is when it gets good.

The curry (coming from someone who is not Indian but frequents Indian restaurants) was possibly the most delicious thing I had ever tasted. The naan loaves were fresh and had a perfect balance of dough and crunch. I savored every bite as I devoured all of what was in front of me. My girlfriend and I even shared our curries with each other because they both had such distinct, exquisite flavor. It made all the other Indian/Pakistani food I've had in SF seem comparable to McDonald's. I couldn't believe it.

I want to give this place five stars. I honestly do, but my initial experience just won't let me do it. I give the food 5.5 stars.

This place is dirty. Every time I get a utensil or plate I check to make sure it's clean. I ordered bottled water last time cause I just don't trust this place. Maybe they're trying to recreate the India slum experience on polk street and they're doing a good job, so 5 stars if that were the goal.

The food is pretty good. I'm not a big fan of their version of chicken saag; but it's acceptable.

This used to my spot with my sis when she used to live on Pacific and Hyde. We would go walk here after yoga (yes, so healthy!) get beers at the liquor store next door and munch away...

I tried that last night with the S.O.... got beers and drinks from the liquor store and walked into Shalimar thinking that it was going to be the same... but after the first bite... I knew it wasn't going to be so...

    We ordered the following:

    - 2 CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA = spicy... and the sauce was thick but not tasty and or creamy.

    - SEEKH KABAB MUGHLAI = it was good... with the brown sauce found at the counter... but it's spicy... I managed to eat half... before my mouth started burning up!

    - 3 regular naans = I guess I am spoiled with House of Curries in Ashby but their naans are way tastier and flakier... what we ate last night was crispy and crunchy and bland. Majorly disappointed.

    - rice = tasty... and probably just the right amount for the S.O. and I.

Overall... glad that I managed to drag the S.O. here ... also it was nice to go back and reminisce the good old days with the Sis especially with the beer... cheap food but maybe the chef was off since it all bland... not X'ing them just yet...

I have never been to India but I feel like I am eating in India when I  walked in to the place. It is like a cafeteria where you seat yourself after you order at the counter. The food was decent, very similar to most Indian restaurants although they do have a few more unique dishes which I did not have the gonads to try. Chicken tikka had too much bones and was hard to eat. Potato filled naan was tasty and piping hot. You will smell like curry when you leave. BYOB aspect is pretty cool.

I was torn between 2.5 stars and 3. But honestly, this place didn't deserve a 3 star rating from us.

It has a janky little interior. That could actually add to the charm if we'd otherwise had an enjoyable experience or excellent food.

But if you're not a regular, beware. You are expected to know the elaborate rituals that apparently revolve around seating yourself -- we were barely grunted at and it wasn't clear what we were supposed to do -- to ordering at the counter. To watching your food sit at the counter, so that my spouse thought perhaps we had to get that ourselves too, only to be grunted at again, so that our food was finally brought to us instead.

In fact, my spouse was so intimidated by the staff that after going back to ask for soda, the spouse would not go back to order naan. And we could've used some naan to soak up the grease. A good restaurant also would have told the spouse that one order of rice was good enough for two people.

The food itself was OK. I can't remember the last time I didn't particularly enjoy Indian food. So thanks for standing out that way, Shalimar. I ordered paneer masala, which was very greasy. The upside was it was filled unidentifiable herbs that made it a little different. But not enough to rescue the dish. The spouse ordered tandoori chicken, which I understand was good enough, but not outstanding.

    Mango lassi was decent.

Overall, I regretted coming here. It wasn't particularly clean. I had no desire to use the bathroom, if they had one. The food wasn't good and the service is apparently geared to regulars who expect to seat themselves and to be left alone.

Sorry to have given you our money, Shalimar. It won't happen again.

Chicken Tikka Marsala! I don't care if I might as well be screaming Sweet and Sour Pork! I know its probably the least authentic dish but I love it and Shalimar makes it good. The nan was off the chain. This place is no frills but its good, cheap and quick. If you're around the Polk st area and bar hopping this place is awesome. And you can bring your own booze in how cool is that.

W T H! Here comes the out of towner (ME) walking in  with my damn cell phone glued to my head.  Clueless, I order a slice of Pizza (which is next door).  The guy gruffly tells me "We don't serve slices, Sit down". Well I hung up the phone immediately and sat my ass down, I didnt even order.  I started to speak, he looked at me like I needed to shut up, which I did.  He served me the Chicken Marsala, rice, and some fresh cooked Pita like bread.  I did what I was told and all I can say is my head nearly exploded.  There is no way you can put more combinations of flavor in a dish than what I was served that night, it was ethereal.  Last note: customer sitting next to me says that all the cab drivers come here, period.  What's that say?!  Spent 13 bux on a meal 2 could have shared. JACKPOT.

The food is ok (though not amazing), but the space is neither comfortable nor clean-looking (though much less scary than the Tenderloin location). After ordering I try to stay focused on the conversation I'm having with my dining companion to avoid thinking about the environment I'm in. For a more comfy (and tasty) experience I prefer Lahore Karahi. These days I don't like stress served up with my daal, guess it's a sign of old age!
