Shakespeare at Stinson - CLOSED
4 reviews for Shakespeare at Stinson
It's like Shakespeare in your own backyard. Imagine a bunch of your friends decided to get together and put on a play on the edge of the beach. Yeah. That's this place. It's actually a lot of fun, you're not going to see any groundbreaking, earth-shattering theater here, but you'll still have a good time. It's a beautiful setting, just make sure you dress warm and bring a picnic and good bottle of wine. Make friends with the cast members and they might invite you to party at the beach house after wards. A nice place for an interesting and unique date.

The tickets were a pricey for Shakespeare in the Park ($25 for adults), but it made for a fun and different evening out. It's a classic sort of summer, local outdoor theater, with a particularly beautiful setting. It's right on Stinson Beach in Marin, and the stage /seats are on a lawn not much bigger than someone's backyard. The size gives it an intimate feeling. There are seats for everyone and pretty landscaping--flowers and hedges. They sell tea, hot chocolate, and cookies during the show, and there are lots of cute restaurants and bars nearby to make an evening of it. We saw "The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged)." The acting was amateurish, but the show was a lot of fun. Tickets are easy to buy online. I would definitely go back, maybe as part of a Marin day trip.
I saw Hamlet at Shakespeare at Stinson Beach this weekend, and while it's true that it's in a nice backyard setting that's great for a small picnic, nothing can really make up for the fact that the acting is really quite bad. I don't want to be harsh, but I felt like I was at a bad high school play. I booked the tickets through Goldstar Events so I got 50% off, but I still feel a little ripped off. Maybe it's all about setting expectations....so I hope this helps.
We went with a group of six to see a Bollywoodized version of "The Taming of the Shrew." We brought a few bottles of wine and food to eat during the performance. I would suggest getting there about 30 min early to get a big enough spot on the lawn to set out a blanket and a few chairs for those that want to sit up higher. We left the city at around 4:45pm and arrived at 5:45pm for the 6pm Saturday show. We found parking about a block from the theater as people were leaving the beach by the time we arrived. The performers were not great, but they were obviously having a great time and that made it much more enjoyable to watch. I would highly recommend seeing this particular performance. There are plenty of restaurants and bed and breakfast inns around the theater that I would take advantage of the next time we go. It was definitely worth the $17 we paid for the tickets (through Goldstar events) and it was a nice opportunity for us to get out of the city.
