I can't believe that all of the years I lived in NYC and I never came to Shake Shack... After hearing about the long lines, I guess I was really turned off and just never went down there to try it. Well I finally was lucky enough to try the goodness that is Shake Shack on my recent trip back home. Boy oh boy was I pleased!!!
The burgers are amazing. Juicy, fresh, GREAT toppings. It's a bit messy, but all good burgers should be at least a little messy. And the cheese fries? OMG.. Delicious! And all for very little $$$. I didn't get a milkshake this time around. I'll reserve my 5th star for when I try the shakes.
If you are in NY, you MUST TRY SHAKE SHACK.
What a lovely place to have a quick bite to eat. Situated in a scenic park with sculptures and a fountain, the Shake Shack makes having a burger something special.
I got the Shackburger, with cheese, lettuce, tomato, Shack sauce. Fresh, clean taste, like you made it yourself. But much better!
The Vanilla Malt shake was so thick, the straw was a mindf**k. But when it finally reached my mouth, I was in milkshake heaven.
Can't wait for my next visit!

Stopped here for lunch last Sunday since the line wasn't crazy long for once.
I honestly don't get the hype. The shack burger was good, but not amazing, merely a little above average. A glorified in-n-out burger, and inferior to 5 guys. Fries were very average too. Maybe I'm missing something here? At least it is in Madison Sq. Park, so you have a nice spot to eat your food.
In the words of Maeby, MARRY ME.
Where Upper West Side Shake Shack lacked, Flatiron Shake Shack delivered. My Shack Burger this time around was everything I was craving in a burger, and the fries.. my goodness, the fries were crisp and wonderful. Yeah, I know, I know. Two locations doesn't mean two different menus and recipes, but I'm telling ya, there's something about that Flatiron site that gives it its edge.
Dinner after a 2-hour trek was awesome up until my friend pointed out the little mouse emerging for food of its own. Origins of the little creature remain unknown, but you can bet that ball of fur was nothing short of cute. For that I judge no more.

i know this place has 1041 reviews already so anyone reading this should already understand / soon comprehend the awesomeness. I used to live right by this place and it was my favorite swing-by. The line is ridiculously long, I know, but the secret is to be prepared! Snack early and then come to shake shack for a late dinner at 9pm! You don't even need to stalk the Shack Cam. This is when the true dedicated fans are separated from the casual ones! (Oh, it's also a small wait when it's raining too. Technique: Hold burger with one hand, umbrella in other. Munch appropriately.)
My favorites are the Shack Burger and the Shroom Burger. The Shack burger is just plain delicious and the Shroom Burger definitely wins creativity points. Where else can you get a mushroom burger fried to perfection with melted cheese oozing out from its sweet center? The shakes and custard are pretty decent (I really liked a seasonal flavor called Bee my Honey for Valentines day) but the burgers definitely take the spotlight. 5 Guys and In-and-out are solid contenders, but Shake Shack still reigns supreme. The cute park atmosphere is especially nice when its nice out too!

The Shack Stack was a gaudy, mean mother 'effer. Fat and grease is fun but at a certain point, it can become excessive, even for me (the quintessential fatass). The whole thing was mercilessly soaked with oil, grease, beef fat, and melting cheese. Each bite was a beatdown on my aortic arteries. Shake Shack needs a cardiologist on site for anyone who orders that damn thing. (3 stars apply ONLY to this particular burger... As to all other items on the menu, Shake Shack remains a man amongst boys in the sport of burger-making)

I don't have much to add, but I am just so happy to have finally experienced Le Shake Shack recently and now all I can think about is going back everyday.
Also, if you speak French, mad good grounds to pick up a honey. I'm always hearing French 'round these parts. They love their frites.

Yes, I've waited 1.5 hours on line during lunch. Would I ever do it again? No way Jose. That said, the burgers are pretty good, and I have no problem going here when the wait is only 15 minutes or less. Check out the webcam before you go.
As far as the "Fast-Food Burger" goes, Shake Shack has the best. Thick tasty beef patties with gooey american cheese on a soft bun. The best tasting burger I've had.
I just wish they made the burger with pickles and onion already in the burger and not on the side and the onions were large and circular instead of chopped.
I suggest a beer pairing with their Shack-miester brew...at least i think that was it's name.
I wish there was the ability to add half stars as it's really 3.5 stars, but, here are my problems:
The plainer the burger gets, the worse it tastes. Is it really necessary to enjoy a burger topped with the fired portobello and smothered in the special sauce? Don't get me wrong, the shack-stack (or whatever they call it) is delicious, but I'd like to think my cardiologist won't want to strangle me every time I visit a lunch spot.
The line. It's not that I mind waiting; I'll stand in lines at Disney and I'll stand in the line outside Tomoe, but at least those feel like they have a purpose. Listen, is it so hard to set it up so people can order? In 'n Out has pioneered the "order by remote device" technology so as long as people come, people get to order quickly. The offshoot of this, of course, is since everything is (reasonably) cooked to order, you spend 40 minutes in line and another 15 waiting for the food. Come on, that's absurd.
R I D I C U L O U S...
Had em all - from Fast Food Joints like In-n-out, White Castle, Krystal's to Kobe Beef burgers from restaurants like Stingaree and the Wynn in Vegas... I could eat Shake Shack all day everyday if the line wasn't so ridiculously long (-1 star )...
get the mushroom burger... they get two mushrooms, throw cheese in the middle, bread it and fry it... thEN they put it on top of an already delicious burger.... makes me want to go back to NY...

Shake Shack burger is the best burger I ever had!!
I ate a cheese burger and cheese fries at Shake Shack...and I totally felt in love with them. Buns were very soft and parry was so juicy...Cheese fries was also awesome.
I definitely will be back!!
The best burger I have ever had.
Shack Stack is my favorite and everything is so perfect. Buns very soft, patty so juicy, vegies so fresh, and the AMAZING Shroom (panko-fried portabello with cheese). It literally blew my mind.
I don't mind waiting in line for this burger!
Shake Shack Seven Steps:
Step 1: Go very hungry to Shake Shack.
Step 2: Go through the B-line to get your "concrete" immediately.
Step 3: Eat your concrete (and be transported) while waiting in the main line to order.
Step 4: Order cheese fries and a Shack Stack.
Step 5: Wait patiently for your food to arrive, scope out a table.
Step 6: Be transported (again) as you eat your meal.
Step 7: Take a moment and think how lucky you are to live in (or be visiting) this great city.
Oh yeah, Step 8: Wake up early the next morning to run through Central Park to work off the damage. (But it's worth every bite!)
The first time I went to Shake Shack was during my lunch break on the first day of a new job. I got downpoured on while waiting for my order and then I had to hide out in the train station, just me and my semi soggy food.
So even though my fries became wimpy and my Shroom burger looked half decent, I still absolutely LOVED it - especially that first bite of cheese ooze you get with the Shroom Burger. Delicious! But gone so fast. No wonder most people get two. One is good for me most of the time, but I hate how fast I eat those burgers!
The price is kind of a lot for a little burger, but once you know that you like it and are a good sport about it, the price doesn't seem that bad. The only downside is that I get hit with that heavy fast food coma but who cares? That's Shake Shizzle for ya.
And then after you chow down, go look at cute dogs at the Madison Square Park dog run!

The burgers are good but I wouldnt say the best in NYC. The cool part is that you get to sit in the park and eat with the squirrels. Just be careful as these squirrels are not shy and will take off with your food if you put it down.
People thought this was:

The lines are long but if you've chosen to eat in the park, you're probably okay with that.
Smell the birds. Watch the trees fly by. Flirt with some squirrels.
Put your order in at the counter. Any order will do, really, but the burgers and shakes are understandably most famous. Pay very few dollars. Collect your flashing vibrating device that will be your prompt--you are a high-tech version of Pavlov's dog now--and go enjoy the day outside. In no time you'll feel something vibrating in your hand. Don't worry, this isn't a sex toy store. That's later. This is your cue to go get your food.
Find a cozy spot to sit. Take a bite of that burger. Others have called it the best in the city. It might be. The burger is juicy, the bun is quality bread, and the special sauce is liquid nitrogen. But, more likely, it's the best fast(ish) food burger in the city. Eat the perfectly crisp fries. Drink the shake (vanilla, please) that is perhaps the best in the city.
Go into a food coma.
Talk to the grass.
Watch the slugs grow.
(...tastes best when stoned or hung over)

Definitely the best burger in town. A lot of my friends say its a chick burger, whatever the hell that means.
Much better than burger joint, corner bistro, db bistro...
Nothing beats this burger
OMFG...
Shake Stack
Fries
Hopscotch shake
DONE!
OMNOMNOMNOMNOMN.
i felt like i was about to die of a heart attack.....
DIE HAPPY!
The Good: Probably one of the best burgers you can throw down your pie hole. Quality ground beef, expertly cooked, semi-toasted & semi-chewy soft potato bread, and fries that's cooked in what tastes like home-grown lard. Amplify your fries & add their "three-cheese" sauce...NICE!
The Bad: One burger will not do it alone
The Ugly: The line of people the length of Great Wall of China
Total wait time on the first visit: 1 hr. 25 min.
Wait time that it's worth: 30 min. MAX

Having experienced major disappointment with Peter Luger's burger recently, I was hoping to make good with burgers again at another highly popular burger spot. Apparently, the line isn't so bad after work in the fall (the wait was only 10 minutes). My shack burger was good, could have been a little juicier, was slightly salty, and the fries were scrumptious.
The added bonus here is the animal playtime built into each meal. I'm not normally cruel to animals, but I liked making the squirrels beg for my fries.
On your toes, my little rodent!
Oh, you're so ADORABLE, aren't you!
There you go.
Thinking it over, maybe I shouldn't have fed them. Is the Shack one of their main sources of food? I can see this possible headline one day: "Obesity epidemic hits Madison Square Park residents! Fat squirrels too tired to climb trees or bury nuts..."

The Shack Attack burger at SS was arguably the best burger I have ever eaten.
Luckily, I arrived at 11:45am and only had to wait in line for 15 minutes. By the time I got my food the line was easily 3x as long as it was when I arrived. By 12:30 it must have been an hour long. Did you know on Shake Shack's website they have a real-time camera which shows you the length of the line? Incredible..
The shack attack burger consists of a juicy patty which is ground and prepared every morning. It is topped with cheese, lettuce and a tomato. The clincher is the deep fried portobello mushroom that is stuffed with muenster and cheddar cheese. This crispy goodness adds such a surreal element to this burger experience. As a texture whore, I will never order any other burger aside from the Shack Stack.
The cheese fries were delicious as well, the ridged fries are among my favourites and the cheese tasted like it was the muenster/cheddar powerhouse combo. To wash all this down I tried for the first time pumpkin beer, it was earthy and delicious with a clean aftertaste. I also had the Arnold Palmer, a 50/50 mix of lemonade and iced tea, thoroughly refreshing.
All in all an incredible experience at this shack I can not wait to go back to slay that shack attack, along with the custards and concretes.
Shake Shack is also mad green friendly.
SO GOOD!

The Shake Shack satisfied all 5 of my senses.
Upon arriving, I was greeted by the hunger inducing SMELL of delicious, cooked meat. If I was having second thoughts about standing in the lengthy line, this immediately put an end to them and I waited patiently like a good girl.
The line moved fairly quickly, and when we got to the front, we ordered two Shack burgers, one order of fries and an Arnold Palmer. The super friendly girl behind the counter rang us up and gave us our pager. We loaded up on condiments, grabbed a table and waited.
When the pager started vibrating, we picked our food up at the window. My sense of HEARING was then pleasantly satisfied when one of their employees asked us, "Would you like a complimentary cup of our custard of the day?". Free food? Yes please! My sense of hearing was also satisfied by listening to the crazy conversations of everyone around me. No, I wasn't eavesdropping! Everybody else was just talking very loudly, and I can't help it that Shake Shack customers are an entertaining bunch.
We sat down, and I inspected my burger and fries. It was quite a SIGHT. The greenest lettuce, the brightest tomatoes, the perfectly melted cheese oozing atop my juicy burger. Food porn, at it's finest.
I picked up my burger. It was soft and squishy to the TOUCH, just as a burger should be. I think it has to do with the fact that they use potato rolls, instead of the processed white flour monstrosities that you receive at most other places. There also wasn't a single soggy fry in my order. No, they were all perfectly golden and incredibly crispy.
Finally, I took a bite and got a TASTE of what I've been waiting forever to try. And it truly was the best burger I've ever had in my life. That sounds like a cliche, and every time people said it to me, I automatically rolled my eyes. But, it's really true. It was juicy, tasty and generally perfect. This is coming from a girl who doesn't even really like burgers. I don't crave them, I don't dream about them, and it's been a couple of months since I've last had one. But, I savored every bite of my burger and fries, and enjoyed them in a way that I probably haven't since I was a child.
We shared the free custard of the day, which was tiramisu. Not my preferred flavor, but it was a nice, creamy way to end the meal. We liked it far more than we expected too, and will be trying their other flavors in the future.
My love affair with burgers has been rekindled. I fear for my waistline.

Unfortunately in New York, there are no In-N-Out burgers. But we have the Shake Shack. Yes, it really isn't fast food especially in the summer (weekends) when the lines are ridiculously long, but its worth it if you love burgers. If I have friends from out of town I always take them here. Not one has been disappointed yet. If I'm hungry enough, I'll order the Shack Stack. The two cheeseburger patties with the shroom burger (A portobello mushroom fried with cheese). I love their concretes as well (their frozen custards with fix'ins.) Shake Shack has totally become a NY experience.
The burgers are Great, especially the shackburger with the big ass shroom. I'd say on par with In-N-Out. I like the camera thing too on their website. Everyone says something similar to this because this is just fact. If you said their burger sucked i don't where you come from but i want to go there to eat those burgers.
Onto the subjective opinion for why I can only give a 3. The Return on Investment is kinda low for the price; The fries are very forgettable and the burgers are small. When you got a monster appetite volume matters.
Also I'm not like you people (What do you mean you people?!?!?). I'm an impatient asshole, that hates waiting when other options are available, and killing time by making small talk. To me, I do like a little bit of wait to build up the hype, but too long and the allure is gone. Maybe i'm not so different, this is supposedly a common trait of New Yorkers.
I use this analogy. If you were at a bar, and this girl was cockteasing you for an hour and a half, and you were aware enough from the moment of flirting and you wanted to get your rocks of, would you not go for a more surefire thing.
Patience is a virtue, i guess...
How would you describe perfection?
Inexpensive and delicious?? Mmm... the way I like my women :)
Eye of Thundera, Give Me Sight Beyond Sight! (a reference to Thunder Cats for all you OG's out there) What I saw when we arrived at Shake Shack was a long ass line. Apparently, this place is more popular than a black guy at a dance contest!
There are two lines for "The Shack", Line "A" for people that want a burger and line "B" for peoples that want a cone or a shake. You can still order a cone and a shake with your burger in line "A."
I ordered the Double Stack Burger and regular fries. The total was $11.25. Mai ordered the 'shroom Burger and a milkshake. It came out to $12.00. Once your order is placed , you are handed a taser-like waiting device. While we waited, I played NYPD and tazed the hell out some people. Zap, Zap, Zaappp...
The double stack burger was quite appealing. Well constructed. The one thing that stood out was the bread. It was really soft and chewy, soaking up the juice/grease of the burger. And for all you Green Giants out there (Vegetarians), the place is Organic, so you can feel good about yourself. Mai's 'shroom Burger was made out of only mushrooms. It's not a beef burger that has mushrooms but a mushroom burger with cheese oozing from it.
Shake Shack has some "gourmet" qualities, like their lettuce and tomato duo. And the ambience of being in a park makes it a very romantic and pleasurable feast. You will not feel that you are in the concrete jungle of New York City. The vanilla milkshake was creamy, sweet, and thick, complementing the burger perfectly. Once replete, we headed out of the park, passing a gigantic tree trunk and a fountain.
While underground waiting for the W train back to work, I got hit with the Itis (The general feeling of lethargy after eating a satisfying meal. This phenomena is particularly triggered by foods high in carbohydrates and meat protein, AKA nature's Nyquil). I would highly recommend the Double Stack Burger and the Vanilla Milkshake. You can bypass the fries. This place is a solid Jab (4/5).
Shake Shack is not perfection but if you want a delicious burger with a tasty milkshake this is the place for you. Just good comfort food.
$5.00 for a cheeseburger. The piece of meat was pretty big compared to In-and-Out. The beef was tasty and well seasoned and you can tell it's juicy quality beef patty, not your avg fast food beef.
Unfortunately - there is absolutely no IN DOOR seating space at this location. Do not come here if it rains. We had to walk our food to Bullshead Tavern to eat our burger.
The cricut fries were okay.
I hope they build one in Miami or I may have to move to NYC just for the Shack Stack Burger.
I think the other 1000+ people covered everything. I would just add that I think 5 Guys is better, less expensive, and no line.
With the In-n-Out's, Burger Joints, and Five Guys out there, it is very hard to have a burger that stands out from the rest. Of course, I have yet to win the lottery and eat one of Huber Keller's insanely expensive $5K burgers, but Shake Shack is definitely one of the best burgers I've ever had.
Point 1: I was incredibly hungover when I first had a Double, and I was immediately cured at first bite. That's a good burger.
Point 2: I'm not a big eater, but I finished the entire burger, an order of cheese fries, and a shake. Contemplated on eating another.
Point 3: I rarely curse. However, I couldn't refrain from a "this is a great f&^%ing burger" after halfway through.
Point 4: I ate a S.S. burger the second time in the rain. I hate the rain. It was still an awesome burger.
Point 5: I sit around sometimes and think about Shake Shack.
Point 6: Talking about sitting around and thinking about Shake Shack makes me want to go get a burger.
I could go on forever with this, but it is definitely a great burger. No frills, weird sauce, or alot of useless add-ons. Just a good combination of melted cheese, grease, and easy to bite through bread. Bring napkins, plenty of them. Be sure to make it an experience with the whole shebang. Get the fries and the shake. If you're lactose intolerant, spring for a lactaid pill. Trust me, it's worth it.
Oh Shake Shack, how I love thee!
It says something that whenever I travel to NYC on business, I make it a point to:
1) Select a flight with a scheduled just-before-lunchtime arrival so I can go straight to Shake Shack before doing anything else in the city.
2) Pick a hotel (the amazing boutique style Hotel Giraffe) in part based on its terrific location which is in walking distance of Madison Square Park and thus has very near proximity to the Flatiron Shake Shack for any odd hours Concrete frozen custard cravings!
3) I willingly spend at least 30 minutes waiting in line just for the juicy deliciousness of a Shake Shack cheeseburger (ketchup only) and heart stoppingly rich and decadent chocolate Concrete with homemade slabs of crisp toffee and hot caramel swirl.
Heaven on earth in the form of a hamburger joint!

If you put me in a restaurant, 99 times out of 100, I will not order a burger. If I did this at Shake Shack, however, I would have been making a terrible mistake.
The cheeseburger was scrumptious. I was even disappointed when I went to take a bite and there was nothing but a wrapper left. I won't lie though, I felt like I ate a bowling ball about 5 minutes later. But it was worth it!
Despite the yummy burger, my favorite is without-a-doubt the concretes. I love LOVE the chocolate concrete with either: PB sauce, chocolate truffles or cookie dough. You really can't beat it. Nope. Don't even try.
The line is long, bring a book.

The burger melts in your mouth... The beef patty is definitely meat-y and fresh-tasting. The shack-cago dog is delicious. So are the cheese fries. We didn't wait more than five minutes to order, probably because it was so cold outside. The food came out quickly (~7 minutes), the workers are super friendly, and the prices are decent for what you get.
Tip #1: Go on a cold day when most people don't want to stand in line!
Tip #2: The single Shack Burger is sort of small. I'm small and so is my appetite, but for those who have big appetites and are hungry, I would suggest getting a double burger or something on the side.
I give this place 4 stars only because of its 1 hour line and not adjusting to the unusually high demand for their burgers. But!... I have to say... it was worth every minute! Their burger has to be absolutely the most tasty burger I have EVER eaten. I usually like a little sustenance in my burger patty meaning that I like it to have a bit of a thickness or resistance when I bite in... but this burger literally melted as I bit down and the flavor was absolutely amazing! I felt like waiting in line for a second burger while I was eating my current one! And OMG!!! (correct usage of the abbreviation in this case)!! OMG!! Their banana milkshake/custard ice cream drink has to be one of the best shakes I have ever had in my life! Best burger & Best Shake! And their fries are pretty good too!
I felt like I needed to wait until they closed so that I could attack the employees as they were leaving to steal their recipe for this masterpiece of a burger! I am sure a lot of people feel that In N Out burger has one of the best burgers ever... but In N Out is far in the hole when compared to Shake Shack!!
The best part about this place is their Shake Shack Cam which allows you to see real time video of the line outside the place so that you can try and choreograph food time. Speaking of the camera... Looks like the line is short right now..... Damn I wish I was in New York right now!!
I would fly to New York from California just for a Shake Shack Burger and a Softserve/Custard Milk Shake if I had just enough money to get back home afterwards!
I dream of you every day and night Shake Shack! I miss you!.... I wont be long!
I went with a friend around noon on Sunday and didn't have much of wait. But do prepare to wait. Wait to order and wait for the food.
Even though me and my friend had high expectactions (I mean who wouldn't after seeing that this place has 1,000+ reviews?!?) the Double Shack met our expectactions. The patties were juicy. The bun soft, the lettuce and tomatoes fresh, and the sauce tasty.
I would've given it five stars but the person who took my order forgot to put down onions and pickles. But my friend had hers. And I saw that it came on the side...if it comes all the side, why doesn't it come with every burger...oh well! And the shake. The shake was okay. It wasn't amazing. I think I should have tried the custard instead.
One curious thing was that after the meal, me and my friend was constantly thirsty (a lot more so than usual) throughout the day even having each finished a bottle of water. So take advantage of the free water!

We all know the con of this spot to be the long line and the prices that are a $1-2 more in comparison for the size, however, the portobello burger, cheese fries, and all the tasty shakes are awesome and it was absolutely delicious. The food is so fresh and right on point - I love their sauce in the burger.
Oh this is a must try for anyone in the city.
Being a native Californian I have missed my beloved In-N-Out Burger since I moved to NYC. I have tried a few of the hyped pricey burgers in town and although some are good, nothing but Shake Shack fulfills my craving.
The Shack Burger is so great. It's a little smaller than an In-N-Out burger and the meat patty is a bit thicker but the taste is as near to perfection as you can get in NYC. The cheese fries are also amazing. Wash it all down with a Shack Attack Concrete and you will find ultimate happiness.
Okay, so the lines are long. You can check out their webcam to time your visits and that works out nicely.
The place is basically an institution, and I'm definitely along for the ride. Amazing burgers, fries, and concretes. Not so amazing hour plus lines.
If you don't mind inclement weather, days where it's supposed to rain (but doesn't) or is generally overcast are great. Nothing beats shake shack with under 10 minutes spent on line.
Today, my teenager was off from school so I said why not come into the city with me today? I'll take you to Shake Shack???
He was up at the crack of dawn and with me on the LIRR!
I got there a little after twelve and the line wasn't too long, maybe 30 minutes tops.
We both had a double shake Cheeseburger, fries and I had a coffee blended shake.
We need to get Qadaffi, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and Hammas on line for a frosty shake and a 'shroom burger. One bite will kick the crazy out of them!

As review #981, I'm clearly going to shed some new light on this establishment.
As I was walking up, it was hard to actually see this place because there was such a cloud of hype surrounding it. Actually, it was easy to see it because there was a line stretching the length of the block. Luckily I had given the assignment of waiting in line to friends, and strolled up just as they were approaching the front. See what a nice friend I am?
I'm going to keep this one short - the burgers are very tasty, but not wait-in-line-for-an-hour tasty. What makes them so good? Apparently the secret is that they cut brisket into the meat. I would agree with anyone who says this is the best hamburger PATTY in town. But, the rest of the burger was just, meh. I'd actually suggest getting a double patty, even for the ladies, because that's the best part and I'd imagine the more meat there is, the better. And yes, that is what she said.
The fries are not good. I could make a whole list of what was wrong with them, starting with they were barely seasoned, but just accept that they let me down and I'd take MacDonald's fries any day of the week. And the "frozen custard" is just a decent milk shake. That's it.
As someone from the West Coast, there's only 1 thing I can really say to end this review:
In n Out is better.
