After golfing this course a total of three times - Once in the winter, Once in the spring, and now in the heat of July, I feel I have enough experience to write an unbiased review of the course....

Background: I am currently a 12 handicap, but when I played the first time I was shooting high 90s still .... so I thought Shadowglen was VERY difficult. Now, at a 12, I think it is challenging in spots - but not overwhelmingly.

    Cost-

For a course that is slightly off the beaten path in Manor, you can expect a pretty good value. It is 39.99 on http://golfnow.com on the weekends and I just paid 25 to play 18 after 4 on a Wednesday. The carts used to have GPS, so I would dock them a little here if you pay full price.

    Condition-

Cost really ties to this category and Shadowglen is in great shape. I was talking to a guy today who said the greens were dead last month during the drought, but today they were firm and FAST. True roll, fairways in great shape and tee boxes were level and lush. The rough was also in great shape with not too many "dead" spots. Bunkers in great shape.

    Layout-

MUCH different layout that anything you'll play in Austin. Fairly flat, but depending on where your drives go, you can definitely get in trouble.
From the whites: easy course, unless you are really off with your driver, it is easy to keep it in play and have a short shot to the green.
From the gold/blacks: Hard course and the layout makes it tough. Do not be afraid (regardless of level) to hit an iron or hybrid off the tee, the trees/bunkers/lakes make this course play much longer than it is.

    Overall-
Don't listen to the reviews on punched greens or bad greens -- courses MUST aerate and sand greens or they will die out, if you don't like playing when Aerated - call ahead in spring and fall to ask for aeration schedule. I really enjoy this course, it's fun to use an iron off the tee and watch other try to drive it down within 50 yards, only to go OB. Course management is key, if you're a 90s 100s shooter, this is a tough course, and dont expect any easy shots OR putts!

I recently golfed here and was quite impressed with what I found at Shadowglen - - almost like an oasis in the middle of the desert since it's located off of 290 East on the outskirts of the Austin and Manor border.  I didn't know what to expect since I am familar with Bluebonnet Golf Course - located realtively nearby off of Decker Lane, but I must say I was pleased.

I do not consider myself a golf fanatic, I picked up the game in '97 when Tiger won his 1st Masters and also took a couple of classes.  After going through a golf binge for a couple of summers I now golf a few times each year - - if that.  I have golfed at some nice courses (Presidio, Doral, Grand Traverse) and while Shadowglen doesn't rank well among those courses, I'd say they do a pretty good job with what they have to work with.

So a monthly golfer like me may be satisfied with this course, and perhaps an amateur may be comfortable here, and a pro may get the hang of it quickly after a few tune ups.  Golfing has gotten more expensive around here in the past few years, but this place manages to offer reasonable rates.  Here's the pricing breakdown (per their website, all rates include a golf cart, ProLink GPS w/ real time scoring, and 1 round of golf):

    Standard Rate:  Mon - Thur = $31.99; Fri = $39.99; Weekends / Holidays = $44.99

    Twilight Rate (after 2pm):  $26.99; $34.99; $39.99

    Senior Rates (60+) and Jr. (under 18):  $23.99; $29.99

This course does have it's challenges.  It was hilly at times and some holes were not too straight-forward.  Overall the greens were in pretty good shape and ran fast on this day.  Some holes also had steep drop offs surrounding them (filled with shrubs, weeds, trees) which could easily put you in a predicament if you overshoot, so of course I lost some balls.

FYI - I got there late and my friends were already on the 7th hole, however, the manager was flexible and let me meet them on the 9th hole and charged me a discounted rate ($18).  I was very pleased as he didn't have to do that and it was greatly appreciated.  After your game is done hit the clubhouse - - the bar will discount your first pint of beer ($1) amongst 4 choices of brew.  There's also a flat screen TV there if you want to catch something on the tube as well.

Overall I enjoyed my experience here and thought it was worth it, I will definitely go back to Shadowglen in the near future to work on my Pro Card (whatEVER!).

Terrible conditions, terrible greens.  Of all the courses in Central Texas, this is hands down the worst.  I cannot believe that they let people play and not tell them how bad it is.

The front nine needs to be blown up and started from scratch.

The greens here have just been top dressed and punched.  The greens are unplayable for at least a month.

Putting on them was like putting on Sand Greens.  I believe they are due for one more top dress in October.

    Ugh.

Shadowglen is a tough course but worth it.  I've typically paid around $30 for 18 holes and cart.  The carts themselves are really nice, they have GPS and flyovers for each hole.  You usually only see these types of carts at nicer courses like falconhead and wolfdancer.  The front 9 starts out with some pretty tough holes but don't get discouraged because the course gets easier from there.  After toughing it out, the back 9 is quite enjoyable with a short par 5 on 18 which you can make up some strokes.

Located in Manor, about 7 miles east of downtown Austin, this little gem was a find.  I'm told it is under new management and that they are investing in the course.  The condition of the course and greens  were excellent.

I found the course and the pricing to be among the best in Austin for value, playability, conditions, and friendliness.  The rough is well delineated from the fairway and the course requires you to hit all the shots.  The greens rolled well, but had a couple of minor fungal problems in spots, but the flags were placed away from it.   The management appeared to be on top of it, so I expect it to be handled by the next time I head out there.  They also have junior tees in place for the kids.  Very few courses in austin do this.

The course is not surrounded by houses, which is important to me. There are homes on a couple of holes, but nothing that affects the quality of play.   I don't want to feel that I am playing in a subdivision.

All in all, this is the best value in golf in Austin.  Hands down!

BTW, the guy who was complaining about OB on both sides of almost every fairway, that is simply not true. The course is challenging with plenty of trouble, but if you play from the correct tees for your handicap, you will enjoy the course and the value.

Last played this course in the absolute bottom of the summer drought when all of the course's "tanks" were dry.  That said, the course retained its playability, and I will continue to play it.   It is a fair daily fee course, with a layout that is fair but often challenging--especially when the water hazards are full.  Some tight holes that demand good tee shots and penalize bad ones.  I'd rate it a notch below, say, Falconhead, and on a par with Avery Ranch.  Give it a try.  I bet you will go back.

This is a well-kept, moderately priced, long and tough golf course.  I've played this course in excess of 40+ rounds, and it's a different experience each time I play it.  Pros:  A true challenge of golf.  Bring your "A" game, and some extra balls.  Trust me, you'll be using every club in the bag on this course.  Nonetheless, once you play this course about a dozen or so times, you begin to understand how to play it, and your scores will drop.

You can shoot low here, but it is difficult.  The latest winning amateur shot a 72 and a 74, so like I said, it can be done.  As for the staff, they get two thumbs up.  Their very friendly, and professional.  So, why does this course get some bad reviews?  Because what others are saying is true too.

Ahhhh, the Cons:  The second Par 5 on the front 9 is just ridiculous.  I can live with the rest of the course, but that split level, trap infested, hell-hole is just a stupid design.  I'll be maybe one over on my round and then I run into that beast, and now I'm staring at 5 over on what used to be a good round.  It's very demoralizing, and typically affects the rest of my day.

Another drawback is the complete lack of etiquette, and knowledge of the rules of golf by a considerable percentage of the folks who play this course.  Shadow glen obviously isn't at fault for the general public at large, but they could hire some additional staff e.g., Marshal's to police some of the slower players with aggressive attitudes.

Nothing ruins a round faster, than getting stuck behind an inexperienced foursome who thinks the T-box is part of the driving range.  These folks typically refuse to let anybody play through, and are usually very slow!
Unfortunately, this seems to be the norm every time I come to play here.

The only other thing that ticks me off is the frequency of tournaments during the week.  I play golf at least once a week, and I normally like to play two rounds in a day.  However, every time I show up, regardless of the day of the week, there's some kind of funky tournament going on, and the staff usually fails to mention this when I make my T-time.  So, now I make sure I ask in advance.

This course has the potential of being top-notch, but until they regulate the blue-jean and tennis shoe crowd, it will continue to deter the more experienced golfers.  The course is tough enough without having to deal with a bunch of nonsense from uninformed individuals.  I guess you get what you pay for, and that holds especially true for Shadowglen.

There always seems to be a tee time available at Shadowglen.  Coupled with some lackluster reviews in general, I was hesitant to even give it a try.    But with the a nationally known architect and great green fees, I did...and I'm glad I did.    The course was in good shape.   It's a tough layout, but the holes are fair.    I easily put it in the same category as Grey Rock and Falconhead.   It's half the price of both.  I'll be back.
