The course was in good shape, and so were the greens but they were alittle slow.
Lot's of bunkers, my playing partner was in the kitty box 11 times.
Staff was great. -

Ok, truth be told this is more like a 3.5*'s but that isn't an option.
Pro's:
-They are always running screaming deals...like right now $40 w/cart, range balls and lunch.
-The course is generally in pretty good shape.
Con's:
-The layout is pretty strange. The holes themselves are ok but the elevation change is kinda lame. Like hole #11...there is really no way to hit your tee shot w/o having an effed up second shot.
-I've played it a few times and some of the groups in front were either totally clueless of etiquete, didn't give two sh_ts or something else. Some slow play can be expected.
-Piggie-backing on the above, nobody repairs their ball marks.
All in all it's a good course though. Each time they have an awesome deal, I'm on it, provided I can get out there early. With no trees, lots of elevation change and the wind coming over Mt Diablo, it can be a wind tunnel. -

Executive summary: Of the three 18-hole golf courses in the immediate area (Shadow Lakes, Roddy Ranch and Deer Ridge), Shadow Lakes comes in third place.
Details: Full disclosure - I consider myself a run-of-the-mill hack. This means I'm currently a 10.5 index, average drive around 225 yds. That said, I regularly play Roddy Ranch, which I consider the best (and most challenging) of the aforementioned trifecta. On occasions where Roddy and Deer Ridge are too crowded, I'll drive over to Shadow Ridge and try to get on.
Pros:
Driving range (which Deer Ridge doesn't have). Easy to find deeply discounted green fees and specials. A few interesting strategic holes. Generally very wide fairways (not always a plus, but if your game's not "on" there are plenty of places to miss safely).
Cons:
Course layout, overall, is simply not all that interesting. Not a balanced variety of challenges. Postage-sized putting green. But the worst and most egregious problem - the greens throughout the 18 holes are in very inconsistent condition leading to poor rolls from hole to hole. Now, Roddy Ranch generally has very, very fast greens (for a municipal), but they putt true and you can count on the right read rolling on its line. By comparison, Shadow Lakes is akin to putting on old corduroy...which varies significantly from one hole to the next.
Overall, it plays like a newer course (compared to, say other munis like Lone Tree or Delta View. But the somewhat ho-hum layout and horrible inconsistency of the greens prevents me from strongly endorsing it in the same way I would Roddy Ranch. -

Boy has this place taken a turn for the worse. Friday 12:10 Tee time. We're booked as a twosome. They also booked a threesome for the same time. Starter makes us a FIVESOME. Says play fast. After the third hole I felt sorry for the SINGLE behind us. We broke up and left the threesome behind. We then ran into TWO more FIVESOMES. At the turn we went into the Shop and asked what they would expect us to do. Stand behind the Fivesomes which had holes open ahead. The shop said we don't allow fivesomes. I said yes you do you started us that way. What a Sh*hole. Wouldn't play that goat ranch for free! Avoid the packed 6 hour round and do nothing marshals and most of all the denying shop. The perfect storm of a bad experience.
Oh and by the way Bluejeans and tee shirts welcome. -
Review from Jules S.
The course isn't that bad. A few holes are pristine, but a few holes are also borderline ridiculous. Those holes need to be rethought of and designed a different way. The 1st hole is ascending from tee to green...what? So much for getting everyone off on the right foot. I guess if you don't want beginners to take up the game you can put up an ascending 1st hole or you might as well put up a lake in front of the tee for that matter like a certain Walnut Creek course I play at. No matter, I'm way pass those days of hacking, I'm just thinking about the newbies and how it's a minor obstacle for them.
I really love the #2 hole on this course though. To me, this is the signature hole of the course. It's beautiful, it's long, and the way it plays is never the same for me. On a different note, they need to fix a few of the cracking paved cart paths...I think it was either the par3 #14 or #17. The foundation is eroding and just a lawsuit waiting to happen one day when it gets super soaked from the rain.
The clubhouse is pretty nice. The people that work there are cool for the most part. The driving range is OK. The fact that there are online specials for this course are awesome. And, if you sign up online to their site, you get a free green fee with paid cart M-F...not bad, if it's a half-cart fee (some courses like to charge a full cart fee for single riders). My birthday hasn't come by yet, so till then stay tuned and I'll let you guys know what the damage will be.
Luckily, for some, that most of this course, situated around houses, does not have the homes of the community come into play that often. You need to slice it or hook it pretty badly to hit a house. With that said, play safe and have fun out in Shadow Lakes GC.Listed in: Roughing it!

This review is for the golf course.
Played a tournament here. Was about $60-65 with cart on weekend morning. Not sure of normal pricing.
Overall Value (3.5/5): It has a decent amount of elevation change, which is always challenging, but walking the course would also probably be taxing. They don't include any sort of course map (not even a tiny one on the back of the scorecard), so its hard to know where you're going unless you've played there before. They do sell the yardage book in the proshop for $7. Fortunately, I had my smartphone Golf GPS app. Didn't come across many on-course yardage markers either. They do have the "pin-placement matrix" so you know where they dropped the pin that day (front, front right, back left, etc) and how many yards to compensate. There are a couple forced carries over water, so I wouldn't recommend this course to golfers who can't consistently get the ball in the air..
Tee boxes (3.5/5): Good tee boxes, no exposed/bare spots or hard ground. Ball washers on all tee boxes.
Fairways (3/5): Good grass coverage, few bare spots and ground under repair.
Rough (3.5/5): The rough is ~2.5-3.0" deep on average, which is decent. But its a very thick grass they use on the rough here, so the ball never really sits down into the grass. I ended up hitting maybe 3 shots out of the rough with my 3W very cleanly, only had to layup with an iron out of the rough twice.
Greens (3/5): Greens were in good shape, some contours and some have tricky contours, but most are just straight forward bowl shaped greens. Speed is faster than your typical muni course, but could still could be a little bit smoother (as with most courses)
Bunkers and Hazards (4/5): I do enjoy forced carries and layups, of which this course has a few. Its frustrating dropping your ball in the water, but if i didn't want to challenge myself I would play an easy muni every week. Bunkers were ok and in abundance. Most were hard packed damp sand, 1 or 2 that I landed in were more fluffy sand.
Facilities (4/5): Decent restroom facility on course, the restaurant/bar gives unlimited refills on fountain sodas. Food service at the restaurant seemed a bit slow.. -

For those of you that have not done it, it is like Hiddenbrooke in my opinion but not quite as good, and further away from SF, where I live. It's a tract home course. Some nice holes, some very OK holes, and a few downright dumb ones. Not really walkable; the par 5s are poorly designed and a couple of the par 4s are kinda silly too. The par 3s are the best part of the course. Conditioning was decent. Tips were 6700 but seemed to play short even in 50 degree weather, albeit there was no wind.
Downside: Goose Poop Central. Overall: Very forgettable and not really worth the drive, but a nice day and fun round of golf overall. We paid $44 each and that is about the value play here, factoring everything in for Bay Area golfers that like to go around the horn and play everywhere.. Pace of play was good and it wasn't too crowded. As a home course or club it might be fine, but compared to the supply and variety of Bay Area golf, it's a pretty average residential development course.
For reference I am a 3 index and amateur tournament player all over Nor Cal. -

I am actually writing a review for the event coordinating staff and the Clubhouse.
First off, I highly recommend doing business with Shadow Lakes for a party. The price was amazing for what they offered, they are extremely accommodating, the view is pretty and the girls, Tamara and Amy are super friendly!
We threw a huge party with a live band in the clubhouse and everything went off without a hitch thanks to the staff.
I will absolutely use them again for a party! -

I enjoy playing at Shadow Lakes. The course is always in good condition and it is very reasonably priced. The bar staff provides excellent customer service. The golf attendants around the range and during tourneys are always really friendly and helpful. The staff in the pro shop can be hit and miss. I have met many of the staff who are completely fabulous and know what customer service should be. Then there are a handful who are just there to receive a paycheck and not quite outgoing or friendly as the others to any of the customers.
Here's a summary of my experiences on average:
The condition of the course is always great : 4.5 stars
Beverage cart frequency and customer service: 4 stars
Able to hit off grass on the driving range, putting green: 3.5 stars
Pro shop staff - Depending who is in the shop, you will receive excellent customer service to just a nod: 3 stars
Bar service: 5 stars
Average: 4 stars -

My lovie is an avid golfer. He's the kind of guy who, if given the opportunity to get off work early, would hit this course for their late special: $15 after 3pm. So naturally, I went to this place to hunt for his Christmas present. Got him a gift card for a couple of rounds on the weekends, which costs around 35 bucks a round.
When he opened his present, his face was priceless! Thanks Shadow Lakes for making Christmas shopping for my lovie dear a cinch :-) Perhaps I'll get to play on your beautiful course one of these days, when said lovie teaches me how to hit a golf ball. -

This is my neighborhood course and the twilight rates are so good its scary! I hope they stay open, we don't need an 18 hole vacant lot in the area! In nine years of playing here, I've watched this course evolve from a high-end Troon course, to a budget priced local track. The management keeps the fairways and greens well groomed. The rough is cut lower and this made the course far more fair now than it was under previous management. I like it for what it is.. a good, tough, course that I can usually walk onto in the afternoon and tee off right away, playing as a single..
Shadow is a great value on weekdays. I've had a weekday membership in the past, but its not worth it any longer. With the deals available on golf-now, and their twilight rate, why pay for a membership?
Mixed experiences here, receiving both great and poor customer service. Even though I've played the course consistently since it opened, I dont feel warm and fuzzies here! ( I've been playing here since before they had a building, when the pro-shop was a trailer.) I like the physical layout of the course and I do play it regularly. I'll continue to play it often - but only because its nearly next door.
As an example, recently I arrived at 12:40 and the clerk wouldnt give me the 1:00 Twilight rate. When I said I'd practice until 1:00 and then tee off, he told me that his register wouldnt allow me to pay it until 1:00, (which I didn't believe! NCGA members are actually entitled to an early twilight rate, but this was clearly a pissing contest and he was NOT going to give me the rate until 1:00) When I said that I didnt understand why he was turning away business? His reply was a smartass, I dont understand why you don't get it!! That day, I went to LoneTree and played! I usually drop places with that type of service, but I've watched staff come and go here, so I keep coming back... -

The Good...
This reminds me of the Ranch at Silver Creek in San Jose. The main difference being that this course makes sense. Where the Ranch on Silver Creek has idiotic hole configurations, Shadow Lakes is tough but fair. There is a little more vertical than there should be, but it's still a fun track. #16 is a great signature hole with an island green. There are no rude tricks out here. It's pretty straightforward and rewards the golfer who plays within his/her abilities. I can't recommend this course for beginners. Lots of water, houses, deep rough, etc., etc. It's a 136 from the tips.
The Bad...
The greens here are absolutely horrendous. They are probably some of the worst I've ever seen on a "country club" course. LOTS of bare spots. They roll slower than any other green I've ever played in my life. Extremely long putts quite literally cannot be hit hard enough to make it to the hole. Maybe we just happened to show up the one day they hadn't cut the greens for a week, but it was akin to putting on shag carpet.
Overall, the course is fun and fair, but not worth more than $50 per round.
One bizarre thing of note: the food in the clubhouse is actually very good. However, we were here on a very busy Sunday afternoon, yet there was no waitress. You ordered from the bartender. -

For the price, this could easily be a 5 star course. I played here on a Thursday morning and got in 18 holes, with a cart (you have to have a cart here) for $25. After the 18, my group decided we wanted to do another round and discovered that it was only another $10 to do so! $35 for 36 holes of golf! Sick!
The restaurant served some decent food, as well. I got a hamburger in between rounds and it was def. good grubbage.
The course was very challenging. You have some long par 5's, winding par 4's, elevated par 3's and plenty of hazards to deal with (including a tee shot on the 16th (i think it was the 16th) that must clear water to make the green...and the darn front of the green is sloped, bringing your short shots back to the water!). The 18th hole has a sandtrap from hell right before the green. It was taller than I am...and I'm 6'5"! I got stuck in that mofo and took shot after shot digging my way out. Ahhh, I just got angry again writing about that, lol.
Yeah, anyways...great course and as an added bonus, you'll learn to overcome stressful situations and to develop patience and inner-peace, making you a better human being, lol. -

Used to live here. Moved out right on time when the prices were still high... and then they dropped. I think we lived on the 13th fairway or something? I don't remember. Our house was huge. Not too much privacy in the backyard but I did enjoy yelling at golfers from time to time. Also witnessed a little accident in my backyard (the fairway) where a little prop plane fell in one of the golf ponds! Everyone was ok, but that was a bizarre little happening. Vasco road is a killer though, literally.

I really like the layout of this course. Very fair yet challenging, and lots of fun shots. I played on a very windy day which made the course very, very difficult. Par 3's were a lot of fun and par 5's were long and difficult to reach in 2 (possibly because 3 of them played directly into the wind). Definitely the type of course you need to play several times to get yardages correct with all the curves and elevation changes as well as how much club to hit into/with the wind. I thought the greens, minus one or two, were in great condition and rolled nice.
Service in the Pro Shop was very friendly and helpful, and this course always has great deals (I played for $35) which was a great deal for this course.
My only complaint is that it was very difficult to find yardage markers in the fairway, so definitely bring your SkyCaddie. -

I pitched in from 30 yards for bird. Drained a 25 footer downhill to save a sandy par, and drained a 50-ft side-hill putt saving yet another par.
In short, I love this course.
The greens play very true. Bent grass, but not cut ridiculously short. Fast, relatively good condition, with true rolls for the most part.
Overall the layout is interesting with a lot of uphill holes, elevation changes, and strategically placed fairway bunkers.
A few notable holes include the par 5 6th, a 560+ yard uphill monster. and the par 4 16th which plays downhill from the tee towards a pond which must be carried over on the downhill approach to the island green. Now that is a challenging golf shot. -

My brother in law and I played this course recently. We got a deal for $29, which included a cart. However, if you wanted to walk, it was still $29. We were going to walk (since we couldn't take cart out on fairways due to wetness), but without a discount we took the cart instead.
Our group had 3 carts. (One player had his young daughter out there with us, which we had no problem with) One cart died on hole number 6. He called the club house and they didn't have any other carts to bring out. So they hoped on the other cart. Then the final 2 carts died on hole 15.
When we called the clubhouse, they said that they had no more carts. They admitted that they have batteries in there carts that don't hold charges but won't do anything about it. When asked to speak to a manager, they mentioned that there was not one at work that day.
I will say that they gave us $12 back for a cart fee. (But they wouldn't take it off when we started play if we wanted to walk) and gave us a card for a free round of golf to use before March.
I have played here where you don't see a cart girl at all, or just once. They don't have water out on the course for you to drink if you are thirsty either. I guess you sometimes get what you pay for.
The positive part of this course is that they are working hard on improving the fairways and the areas around it. The greens are in good shape and improving.1 Previous Review: Show all »

If you pay $75.00 it's 3 star, but if you're on their e-mail club, you can get amazing deals which make Shadow Lakes a 5 Star....I've played here for as little $25 and it's hard to find a better deal anywhere. The fairways are large and the course is quite scenic, except for the houses the line every fairway. The par 3's are all really fun, with H2O coming into play on 2 of them. They have a nice range with grass tees as well.

Every time I have played here I have had fun. The teens working there are well trained and are very friendly. The beverage cart makes it to us every time and keeps us in beers while we play. Good times! Thanks!
