The health center is one of the best parts of school, and you pay for it, so might as well use it! It's an awesome resource for the school community, where students can always go with questions and concerns, comfortably.
The staff is sooo friendly and concerned, especially the registered nurse Joanne. I'm pretty sure that's her name, in clinic C. I missed a follow-up appointment and she personally called me to make sure I was okay. I get better service from this free clinic than I do at any other "regular" doctor's office that I've been to.
Every student at SFSU must pay about a $100 fee per semester for health services, but I always noticed that is one of the less used resources of the campus community. This provides an immense convenience for us students who don't have insurance, but also makes it easy for folks who do have it.
I typically visit there about once or twice a year, and their no charge services includes things like minor issues and injuries. I usually go there if I have a foot problem, or something that needs to be taken care of. Kaiser Permanente can't give you same day appointments without hassling with an advise nurse over the phone (which the wait can be forever), but student health services can schedule you in for same day appointments only and if you come in early enough, you can be in and out of the place in under an hour.
One great bargain is when you need medication. When you see the doctor and you need prescriptions, the on-site pharmacy can fill it up and it is real cheap in price. They even carry over the counter medication, however you must have a doctor or nurse evaluate you in order to receive such items. For example, I had a terrible allergy problem, and the prescription was for some claritin and sudafed. The pharmacy counter won't take anything without a doctor's authorization for anything (including over-the-counter), but once you get the doctor's OK, you get a substantial discount on the stuff they write. Example: Claritin was priced at only $4 for a 30 day supply, versus at the grocery store where $4 only gets you 5 days worth of the stuff.
One big tip, always go to the health fairs they hold. They provide certain tests for free versus a small fee they would typically charge on a normal day. They are also handy if you encounter a medical emergency, and will be able to help you until paramedics arrive to transport you to a hospital.

Warning--this is kind of graphic!
It was just a regular day, and I was making a big salad for lunch before I left for school. One minute I'm opening a can of olives and the next minute the top of the can disappears into my thumb, which in turn is gaping open and blood is gushing out in amounts I've never seen before. I call my husband and he comes home from work just up the road, and we try to decide what to do.
Stitches are definitely in order, and soon; I'm starting to feel lightheaded from the loss of blood and aborted state of lunch.
I'm uninsured. I don't want to go to General and wait forever, miss all my classes and leave with a humongous bill.
All of a sudden, a thought occurs to me...maybe SF State's health center can take care of me. My husband calls them for me while I lean over the sink, blood still gushing, and voila! An hour and a half later I leave the student health center no longer bleeding, with six stitches in my poor thumb and my arm aching from a tetanus shot. Cost? Absolutely free. Wait? None to speak of.
I actually have a written note from the doctor exusing me from writing or typing for the next week! But, I have four final papers due (not to mention some Yelping) so I'm doing the ol' 9-fingered typing trick these days. Oh well...
The doctor was awesome and nice, and the whole experience was as pleasant as possible given the circumstances. Hopefully I won't have to go here again but I highly recommend it to other SFSU students!
