I actually thought about giving Sezz Medi 5 stars.
For a random little Italian place near Columbia that seems insane!
Yet the pizza was fantastic, the salads were delicious, and the cocktails weren't too overpriced.

The only real downside to the place?
We arrived at around 8 with a party of 6. We had a 20 or so minute wait (which was fine), but once we were given a table we were practically abandoned.
I know that they were very busy, but you still need to try to provide good service even when you're overwhelmed.

They ran out of bread before our food arrived, and instead of telling us that more was being made fresh..they just told us they were out!
Which I found weird/bad business practice.

Boyfriend and I shared a pear/endive and parm salad (yum yum yum) and a pizza. The salad portion was huge, and pizza portion was modest..but it was a perfect amount of food when put together. We also shared the fruit cobbler of the day and were pretty impressed.

Mildly annoyed by the service aspect, but the very tasty food definitely wins out..

Fresh ingredients, great decor (rustic, exposed-brick).  The restaurant is like a great pair of jeans: you can dress it up or wear it casually.  I went with my family, but I would totally bring a date there.

I can't remember the name of the pizza I ordered, but it was phenomenal.  If you like thin pizza and authentic mozzarella cheese, this is the place for you!

I love everything about Sezz Medi...from their bread to their brick oven pizza. Although it is a bit of a tease when I'm starving and staring at them cooking pizza in the oven. Anyway, my friend and I shared a 20$ pizza and we struggled to finish it...so the bill ended up being around 10 dollars. the pizza we had,

Ripieno (stuffed)- Ricotta, Mozzarella, Spicy Salami, Basil, Tomato, Mushroom

was more of a fancy calzone than an actual pizza. The dough was outside and it was stuffed with everything else inside. So good. Even the crust was delicious. Nothing was overwhelming. My only complaint is that the pizza options with meat were somewhat minimal...and I'm a total meathead. That might not be the correct term.

The food was delicious. My friend and I were not expecting much, since we usually liked to eat and hang out next door, but we were pleasantly surprised! Nestled in a quaint basement decorated with surrounding bricks, the restaurant had a cozy feel to it. The servers were friendly and prompt. The food was incredibly savory!

I ordered an appetizer for $12 and the portion and flavor was comparable to a dinner plate. My friend had a calzone-like dish and it was one of the best we've had, even compared to the Boston Italian neighborhoods. My dish had some broccoli that was marinated to perfection. My only complain is that the bread was hard and cold. Maybe that's the way New Yorkers like it, but not us Californians. Otherwise, this is one of my favorite restaurants in Morningside Heights.

This is one of the best pizza's I've ever had and I'm so lucky to live near this place. Nice ambiance, a lot of seating: outdoor seating during warm months, the main dining area and then there's more in the back! Good service and food comes quickly.

My favorite is the Capricciosa. Delicious!! I would definitely give this pizza 5 stars. I get it everytime I come here. Margherita is good too. Good salads.

I was disappointed with the Campione because 1) the description says pancetta. I watch Food Network and I know what pancetta looks like, but the restaurant used regular American bacon. 2) the bacon was almost raw! I didn't eat it. I felt like I was chewing on rubber. It ruined my pizza.

The Italian, brick-oven style pizza is quite good. The ingredients are tasty and come in delicious combinations. The mostly thin crust is decent, but it could use a little more flavor. They have plenty of other menu options, but we stuck with the pizza. My only complain with the menu is that it's a bit pricey for what it is. The atmosphere has a cozy feel to it. The bar and oven are right there in the room with you.

Unexpectedly good. Crowded, noisy, but friendly, well-intentioned. Nice staff, cramped space. Pizzas were great, blistered and charred in parts, good flavors. The cod was delicious with satisfying polenta and escarole.  Not cheap, but not too much either.

Sezz Medi has delicious brick oven pizzas, and anytime we are willing to make the relatively short walk for a pizza this is our spot.   Excellent sauce and crust, and good service (waiters are always warm and friendly).   I also love the salads -- they are so yummy that you don't feel like you are punishing yourself by eating one while everyone around you chows on pizza.  They make a good nicoise salad, too -- WITH potato, the way it should be.

Our only compliant is that their delivery service is really pretty bad -- it is slow and always arrives way later than they promise.  We need to reheat their pizzas when they arrive because they are cooled down and sometimes a little beat up, too.  Wish they would fix this, because we'd order from them all the time if we could count on hot, quick Sezz Medi pizza.

We went here on a warm Saturday evening in the spring. It wasn't completely perfect but it was highly enjoyable and I think that you could probably go here with almost anyone under any circumstance and have a great meal.

It was nice and warm out the weekend we made it in so they had all the windows open, which made for a very pleasant dining experience.  We were able to get seated without a reservation in about 5 minutes on a Saturday night, which was great.  The bread was served with two different oils which was great.  The wine list wasn't amazing but certainly not shabby, we ordered a very delicious Chianti.

The entries were great!  The pizza there is there big selling point.  You order an individual pizza for yourself and can select from a variety of pre-set styles or pick out your own toppings.  The ingredients are all fresh, the cheeses are oozing, the sauce is delicious, and the pizzas are huge for individual size.  I got the Angry Penne but found myself regretting not trying the pizza after tasting some of my friends at the table.  The only complaint I had is that we had to actually ask the waiter to get cracked pepper and parmesan cheese for our dishes.  I would have preferred they offered it but alas the place was pretty crowded and it wasn't a big deal.  All in all I walked out of there a happy camper.

I live one block away from this place and I love to go down and get the pizza - the one with the fresh mozz and tomatoes. It's $14, which is a little high but fair considering the price of good ingredients. I think it's fantastic, holding its part against anything I've eaten in the US or Italy (I travelled to Rome and Florence and ate a lot of pizza). The price is fair because the pizza is enough for two people if you also eat something else on the side. I can eat the whole thing myself, though, no problem.

I've never had anything there besides this specific pizza so I can't speak to apparent concerns about salad or anything else on the menu. My recommendation is just go straight for the pizza, you can't go wrong.

Amazing thin crust pizza -- always hits the spot!

We always go and get their pizzas. Their pastas and salads are also very good and taste fresh.

Sezz Medi is also great for large parties, as there is a spacious back room. They are very accommodating and service has always been great here.

The food quality is quite good. It's very tasty.
Service is typical for New York and the area.
It's just out of my price range. $14 for a sandwich (panuzzi), really?
The main dishes are around $20-25.
If I'm in the mood for Italian, I'd rather go to cheap Max Soha down the block.
(But note Sezz Medi has more pizza and not much pasta, Max Soha has no pizza as far as I know.)

Yep.  Still my favorite pizza in the world.  Also, try the octopus dish.  It's delightful.

And I brought my in-laws here and my father-in-law declared the calamari to be the best he'd ever eaten.

It's been a long time (3 years) since I've been to Sezz Medi, but I really liked their brick oven pizzas.

I used to be hard to eat here for lunch b/c it takes time for the pizzas to be ready.  It was also a little pricey for those on a student budget.

What a disappointment!  After reading those other reviews, although
rather outdated, we were excited to try this neighborhood Italian for its
pizza and salad.  The waiter didn't know much of anything about the
menu or ingredients, and was annoyed by the prospect of having to
ask the manager-- even though the place was almost empty.  He was
down right rude, but the manager is lovely.  The salad was not fresh,
and had no flavor, and the dressing too much vinegar.  The real problem was the burned crust pizza.  It may have tasted better had it
not been blackened pizza, but we will never know.  I will say the sausage was quite good.  We  showed  three waiters and the
manager  that the pizza was inedible due to its burnt  state.  They
shrugged and walked away.  As did we, never to return; we suggest
you do the same.

This place is okay. Our waiter was pretty funny, but the food wasn't that great. We got two pizzas, and brought most of it back as leftovers because we got tired of eating them. We slowly finished the pizzas over the course of the week as a snack of last resort.

Awesome pizza, and the ravioli was the best ravioli I've ever had. Enough said because I'm really tough to please. Downside is that it's a little pricey for Italian food; but above average in tastiness so I think it may be worth it once in a while.

A great little Italian restaurant in the Columbia Area that serves REALLY GOOD thin crust pizzas as well as a host of other Italian dishes. If you're in the mood for Italian food but would prefer to have something other than pasta, this is the place to go (there are only two pasta dishes on the menu). Prices are a bit high for the area but on the other hand, the food quality is excellent. You can check out their cheesy website to get an idea of their menu. They also cater and deliver. Unfortunately, pizza delivery is not recommended only becuase the delivery time significantly affects the crispiness of the crust- you really want to eat their pizzas straight out of the oven.

For dessert, go next door to Cafe Max.

UPDATE: I'm tempted to take off a star for the crap music they have playing and for the TV in the background... but they've redeemed themselves with this new wine doggie bag program... if you don't finish the wine with dinner, you can bag it and take it home. Nice. ;-)

Really great pizza and focaccia!  A friend and I split the Toscana focaccia (goat cheese, spinach and white truffle oil) and I was in heaven.  Granted, I adore goat cheese in pretty much any dish.  But this was warm and the spinach was perfectly sauteed... foodgasm!

As for the margherita pizza, I'm used to pretty blah fare at other pizza places, but Sezz Medi treats their margherita as if it were any other specialty pizza -- there was the perfect amount of sauce, cheese and basil.  Definitely recommended.

This restaurant also had the good fortune to get me to like wine (I hated all wine before this) by recommending and serving a nice, fruity prosecco with the meal.  I still haven't found anything comparably good in my neighborhood liquor stores.

you might think it's a bit far to go all the way to harlem for italian food...especially if you live in brooklyn.  but seriously, if you have the time to take that hike you will be SO glad you did.

this is a family-owned italian restaurant...i mean FROM italy, not like from bensonhurst and they're 3 generation new yorkers.  they're recently here from italy, from what i was told.  the food tastes like italy.  the decor feels like italy.  they have those amazing brick pizza ovens and some of the best pizza i've ever had.  the pasta dishes i tried, including my own seafood pasta dish were each better than the next.  and the prices are definitely reasonable...even cheap actually.  i'm definitely going back.

The problem with this place is that Max Soha up the street offers pasta and meat dishes that, while not quite as good, are far more reasonably priced. The trick is to come here for the pizza, which is the best in Morningside heights and one of the best brick ovens in the city(IMO). Always fresh ingredients, plenty of choices, and good service in a pretty restaurant with lots of space(which can't be said for Max's). If you have the money to spend, I've never had a bad dish on the menu, but the only real value is in the pizza.

I had average expectations for this place. My friend who loves food recommended it to me, so I went in thinking, this will at least be tasty. We ordered a salad and pizza, pretty standard, not very difficult to get wrong. But our salad was poorly tossed with a random vinaigrette that was not the balsamic promised on the menu. Only half of the leaves were dressed, and the others bare. Then for the pizza. It was extremely bland with huge chunks of unmelted cheese in one part and a burnt area on the other side. The wait staff was attentive but they couldn't wait to get us out of there. Besides the fact that we were practically sitting on the people next to us. When we wanted to depart, the table to our left literally had to get up out of their seats (both individuals) to give us enough room to squeeze by.  There is better pizza elsewhere with much more flavor and not burnt.
