I went here last Sunday 1/29/12 and asked a lot of questions about sergers. Yolanda spent almost half an hour explaining what sergers do, and the different features their models had. I loved how she didn't try to upsell to the most expensive model and she was very patient even though I asked TONS of questions.  Russell also said that they have some refurbished models that I could finance, too.  Although I didn't buy a machine that day, I'm sure that when I'm ready to buy I definitely will purchase from Sewing Arts Centers.

So, why am I YELPing about Sewing Arts Center on Pico when I don't even sew?  First, I really want to boost local businesses that are run by nice people.  Second, this store provides a very sorely needed resource in our part of town.  Third, the employees are all well-versed in the business of fabrics, sewing tools, etc.
I have bought lots of stuff here for my wife, even a couple of sewing machines over the past fifteen years or so.  Everyone is helpful, cheerful and wants very much for you to be a satisfied customer.  Stop in and buy something; its only half a block from Trader Joes so you KNOW you'll be in the area.

This place is my "Cheers". You know, "where everybody knows your name".

Due to the slump in the economy the store (like many) has been struggling. So, if you love local shops, and have an interest in sewing or know someone who does, then please stop by here and check out the place. You will not be disappointed.

Staff: Russell, Yolanda, and Becky are the best. Each is very knowledgeable about every aspect of the store: machines, fabric, notions. You name it, they know it!

Store: In addition to the staff, Russell is always making it a point to purchase items of all values, qualities, and themes. Every time I come in here I find something new and interesting that I must have.

Classes: Fantastic!  This is a great place to learn to sew and/or quilt. Not only do classes provide you with the machines, but they also tend to give discounts for any materials you buy from the store for the class you are taking.  The website is very helpful in listing the calendar of events and equipment lists for each class.
In addition to the instruction, I have also met some great people here.

I love taking classes during the holidays at Sewing Arts because someone will bring in some baked or tasty treat.  Like I said, this place is my "Cheers".

    OTHER NOTES:
Parking - good amount of parking in the lot behind the store.
Nearby stores - if you are taking a class (day or night, weekday or weekend), and have not eaten, then do not fret. There is a Trader Joe's less than a block away. So, when I go to Sewing Arts, I am able to accomplish much more than sewing.

Sewing Arts Center is a great locally owned retail store.  Russell who is the owner and one of the sewing instructors is phenomenal.

Looking to learn how to sew?  This is the place to go.  Check out the website for all of the various classes.  This is not your grandmother's sewing class.  Russell is a great instructor, patient, animated, explains the fundamentals very well and to top it off - he's HILARIOUS!

The products that the retail store carries is high quality but not intimidating like Mood and not depressing like Jo Ann's.

Curious?  Check out the website, stop by the store, send me a message and I'll help you decide.

Burned out at work, not motivated, want to get your creative juices flowing - then I recommend a sewing class.  Besides, it's a good skill to have in your personal tool kit and I think Sewing Arts Center will meet your needs as it has mine.

Parking in back.  Variety of class offerings.  Sewing machine/notions/fabrics all available for sale and wonderful customer service from the staff.

I am writing this review to all the people out there that have had the slightest urge to learn how to sew but ehhhh "never have the time or cant really teach an old dog new tricks orrr im not really crafty"  well you need to put away those excuses because I am all of the above and I found the beginners sewing class at this school to be perfect for every beginning sewer.

I didnt know the first thing about sewing and guess what- neither did my class- the instructor Russle is a phenomenal teacher who prides himself on making the class fun, interactive, and extremely productive.  I learned the fundamentals and basics of sewing, I became familiar with the sewing machine, and at the end of my 4 classes I came home with the cutest PJ pants.

There is a class for everyones schedule and level. I will definately be taking a second course- I'm thinking the apron class.

The owner, Russell, knows everything about sewing that's for sure, but he's such a prick to and shames people he doesn't like. He can be utterly rude. You'll learn to sew, but watch out for him on a bad day.

I brought my Brother sewing machine here for repair.  The only problem I have is that is cost $100 for simple repair of the machine.  But, that's a normal price for sewing repair so it's not like I was getting ripped off or anything.  The women who work there are very VERY nice and helpful.  I will definitely be back if I need repair or to take a class.

I love this place! I'm a beginning sewer (seamstress?) and everyone at Sewing Arts Center is so friendly. Normally a staff and their customer service skills can make or break a store for me. Even if the selection of fabrics and notions is fabulous, I won't go back if the staff was unfriendly or intimidating. How lucky for me that SAC has a great inventory *and* great staff?!

Also, Russell is a wonderfully entertaining teacher and I highly recommend taking a class from him if you are looking into learning some skills!

I've found the (once a week for 4 weeks) beginner's sewing classes to be evenly-paced, challenging, and FUN which is exactly what I wanted. Russell is an expert and is a highly perceptive teacher. So perceptive and quick in fact that he can instantly evaluate my performance on a project at-a-glance. I can see how a couple of the reviewers may have interpreted his terseness negatively, but considering that there is so much to accomplish within each class, it is difficult to not be abrupt at times. And a great teacher such as Russel knows how to balance the diverse needs of each student and sometimes that means being a little abrupt, which I think is a necessary part of efficiently leading a dynamic class. In fact, his concise communication style makes it possible for him to be attend to every student on an individual basis. Hey, he totally answered all of my questions and I'm a student that likes to ask  A LOT of questions. I've researched a lot of sewing classes and this one turned out to have the fairest price with the best curriculum with a very engaging teacher.  Thank you Sewing Arts - I have a new hobby which is challenging and enjoyable!! Can't wait for my next class!
