Review from Rachel S.
Thanks to some torn ligaments, I am now the lunch delivery queen. I hunt good salads with the same vehemence as Schwarzenegger hunting the Predator. I think they're equally as elusive.
I ordered the tortilla soup and 1980s chopped salad and my order arrived exactly forty minutes after order, quite impressive considering the burger joint at the end of the street takes 90 minutes. The broth of the soup was amazing, but the tortilla pieces were mushy (why not have the customer add them upon receipt?) and there was WAY too much clumpy cheese in it.
I was also a fan of the chopped salad, though I could have done without the can's worth of black olives. And why is it the "1980s" chopped salad? I'm sorry, but delicious salami never goes out of style.
My one actual peeve - this is a bakery and none of the menus include baked goods. So I couldn't order one of their famous treats to go with my lunch! Certainly, my behind didn't need it, but my brain was screaming, "CUPCAKE!" -

The grapefruit, avocado, chicken salad is great. It's light and healthy, but big enough that it definitely fills you up.
Good food, good service, nice environment, pretty quiet. I met two friends there to work on a project, it's not really the best place to get work done, but the staff was very friendly and accommodating.
Only complaint through, you can get a half size of some salads, but not others. -

Bland and Forgettable.
I really wanted to like this place because of the prime location and lovely decor, but I just can't. For me, it always comes down to the food and quite frankly it ho-hum. Not necessarily bad or good. Just neutral.
I have tried this place twice and have come to the same conclusion - I'd rather take my business else where. -

This is a great place for brunch. The little muffins they give you are INCREDIBLE. I also sometimes go here for dinner. The food is always good.

My book club met here this week. The first thing that I noticed when i walked in was the baked goods. A couple of the cupcakes looked like seseme street characters haha. There were not many vegitarian options which was a let down but the veggie pizza made up for it. I have never seen so many veggies crammed on a pizza. It was really great and I had left overs for lunch the next day.

The food is alright. Nothing Spectacular or exciting. Nothing to complain about but also nothing to rave on about. The service is mediocre. The busboys are more informative, welcoming, & even helpful then the actual servers. Uhhh yea, that's about it.

Review from Karita P.
I originally wrote a review of 17th Street Cafe back on 1/13/12 giving it two thumbs up while doing cartwheels about the food and service. I'd been a fan for quite a while and my hubby was quickly becoming one. I then updated my review on 2/16/12 after having a bad experience on Valentines Day and received an online public comment from Todd W. (the owner) basically telling me that I was wrong about my dining experience and that it couldn't have been my meal at his restaurant that caused my discomfort.
Out of respect for the small business owner I did not post a public reply to Todd and we began a private back and forth conversation between the two of us regarding the matter. In his final response he threw a little guilt my way about the possibility that my review could harm his business. After reading his responses a few times over the past few days I finally decided to delete my initial positive review and my not so positive update. You can't have your cake and eat it too...
My final take on the situation is this, if you're going to own a restaurant or any customer service related business you better have a thick skin and not feel the need to take on everyone that writes something negative about your establishment. I thought Yelp was supposed to be a forum for people to share their experiences (both good and bad) at local businesses. You were perfectly happy to have my first glowing review and the free advertisement that comes from each of us writing great things about your food. I guess sharing my bad experience with fellow Yelpers is verboten at 17th Street Cafe which is exactly why I'll never return.Comment from Todd W. of Seventeenth Street Cafe & Bakery 2/16/2012

My honey and I came by to have lunch last week. We are regulars and have been for years. This place has had it's ups and downs and quite a parade of owners and management...some good, some awful.
I had high hopes for the newest owners...they seemed like lovely young people who knew how to run a restaurant.
Apparently, they have sold the place after just a little while. I hear that they are in escrow and it should be a done deal shortly. As the story goes...The newest new owners will close the place soon and reopen it as a newer different place.
The food was awful on our last visit. My chicken was cold and so tough that it was inedible. My lunch companion had a chicken burger, which came barely cooked.
The usually delicious sweet potato fries were soggy and luke warm.
I can understand wanting to sell, but at least have the decency to keep the food and service up to proper standards. It would have just been the right thing to do.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Wow, I'm really glad I didn't read any of the reviews before coming here because it seems like a hit or miss kind of place. Luckily I enjoyed my brunch this past weekend. We didn't have a reservation but were seated fairly quickly. My boyfriend enjoyed his red velvet cupcakes (and I did too since I stole several bites) and I thought my hawaiian sausage and egg scramble was good too. It wasn't the best brunch I've ever had but my favorite part of brunch was the complimentary muffins and bread. The muffins were soooo good. I mean, it might be the reason why I come back again. Overall, the brunch was good and I'm hoping to try something new if I come back for lunch sometime.

I only stopped by here cause i was there and hungry.
I did a take out of salmon salad. When I got back to my office, I scarfed it down.
I would have to say that this salad was devine!! Totally awesome. Fresh, tasty
and wholesome.
I crave that salad now, and will be back :) -

I came here for lunch and the food was ok. Nothing special. On the menu there was the usual burgers, sandwiches, soups, and salads. Nothing unique on the menu. The place was clean and the service was ok.
Overall, ordinary place that's nothing special. -

NOTE: I previously had a very bad review of this restaurant (not based on food but a groupon issue) but after a very gracious email from the Owner, I am completely deleting the old review and changing it to the experience I had before the bad one. Apparently the restaurant is under new Ownership as of July so.... my review is BC.
I am having trouble remembering what we all ordered. I know I had the Salmon salad and I really liked it. Everyone in my party enjoyed their food. The one thing we did not quite enjoy was a slightly snotty server. She didn't look like she wanted to be there. I did mention this to the new Owner in my message to him so hopefully smiles and friendliness become mandatory if they aren't already. :)
All I can say now is... There is a new owner and it's only fair to give him a chance. Go there and try it for yourself. I might go back and try the breakfast sometime since a lot of people seem to enjoy it. -

How can you trust a place that advertises on Groupon and then doesn't honor their commitment?
Maybe the new owners and staff of 17th St. Cafe & bakery don't quite understand that the internet gives a voice to common people and that we can share our bad customer-service experience here on a site like Yelp.Comment from Todd W. of Seventeenth Street Cafe & Bakery 11/6/2011

The food is pretty good most of the time (I'd argue that they've been inconsistent since I first started coming here a few years ago). But I like the menu and I always stick to the ahi tuna salad anyway.
Warning: Sitting towards the back of the restaurant is a nightmare. The way the sound funnels towards the back.. It's just TOO DAMN LOUD. It feels dim and crowded and I can't hear the person I'm with, which makes for a very uncomfortable experience. Do anything you can to sit in the brighter and better part of the room- towards the front by the windows. -

My wife and I were attending a performance in Santa Monica and made reservation on-line for 17th Street Cafe & Bakery. We got stuck in traffic on 405 (shocking I know) and called to let them know that we were running late, explained we had a performance to attend and could we make it through a nice dinner and still make show time. A very polite man told my wife no problem on the reservation and that we would be fine on the show. We showed up and the server said, "I understand you have a show you are going to...."
Service was excellent, attentative without being intrusive. Not only our server but the manager checked in twice on us.
We had the bruscetta (sp?) which was fantastic, the grilled bread tasted great---no need for the mozzarella which was very good but on second piece I slid the cheese off.
For entrees my wife had a very nice piece of salmon with mashed potatoes and a sauteed veggie combo that was delicious. She enjoyed her fish and the sides very much.
I had the cioppino. The broth was terrific, lots of flavor with some nice heat. The fish in the dish was very good, a bit too much salmon for my taste but that is a preference issue and not a taste issue. The big hunk of grilled bread for dipping was excellent, will try this technique on my own grill soon.
My wife really liked the decor and ambience and said at one point, "the lighting is perfect."
For those bitching about the price, you see the price when you order, if it is too much for your budget don't go! I paid what I expected for appetizer, two entrees and a couple of glasses of very good wine.
I told her that it is too bad 17th Street C&B isn't in Long Beach so we could dine them more frequently.
We rarely travel this far north for dining/entertainment but in the future if the opportunity avails itself we will return to 17th Street C&B. -

They take BRUNCH reservations! Which means no waiting for 45 minutes while you're starving and hungover. The food was good, with portions big enough for a second meal, and service was cheerful.

Hated it. Almost every bit of it. Where do I start...
The employees
Rude, obnoxious, trust-fund baby looking a-holes. No one smiled. No one struck up a polite conversation. Just cold, hateful stares. When I walk in to a business where I'm about to shell out some dough, at least give me a fucking smile. My business and every one else's pays your hourly wage bitch.
The PRICE
Boyfriend and I got two cupcakes, a plain coffee, and an iced chai latte. The cupcakes were just OK and so was the coffee. But that chai latte...like, can I get some chai with my iced milk please? And all of that amounted to $16.
So based alone on the service, I'm confident I'll never go back. Not even to give them another chance. Pray you avoid it! -

Santa Monica, CA
Torn. I think the reason why I give this place only a 3 star rating is because the menu was a bit all over the place. I wasn't really sure what they were going for because there was no real theme. They featured salads, seafood, poultry, random items like tortilla soup and burgers. However, a large portion of the menu was dedicated to pizzas and pastas, It wasn't traditional Italian, like Vito for example, but it had too many typical "italian esque" items to be "American."
Confuse me?
Then again, maybe they are targeting their American clientele precisely. How many Americans do you know who "'try to be everything to everyone?" (And yes, I just quoted Everclear. If you caught that, I'd really like to give you a high five right now).
I will say I LOVED our waitress. She was full of personally; so much so that I invited her to have a glass of wine with us from our carafe. Her amicable attitude seriously made my night. I should have grabbed her name.
I'd say this is a great place for lunch or possibly brunch. Don't get me wrong, the food was very solid. It's just such a tough goal to compete against so many fabulous dinner spots on the Westside, especially on Montana Ave. Go-to lunch spot! Boom. Done. -

First of all, service is spectacular. Seriously. To go right into it, my friend order the Matzoh ball soup and it was gross. Our waitress noticed right way, took it back and offered something else on the house, plus a free wine refill. Then, the head chef came out, apologized and ask how they could make the soup better. Now that is service.
Over all, the food is a solid B. I got tortilla soup that was pretty good and was a perfect warmer for a cool LA evening. Their baked chicken was savory and their burgers are cooked as asked. My friend was surprised to see his medium rare burger, actually cooked medium rare in a dinner/cafe.
The prices are pretty decent for Santa Monica. Basically, if you're looking for a no frills, inexpensive place where you don't have to ask to many questions about what's in a dish, I would highly suggest this place. -

Gosh based on all the recent reviews it seems like this place has gone down. I haven't been here in a couple of years but when i went it was a great place. The muffins that they serve before you place your order are DELICIOUS!
The food and service were also good. It's a good neighborhood breakfast place. -
Review from Rebecca T.
Marina del Rey, CA
Service? 5 stars. Armando, as well as all the bussers, were incredible and attentive. Bustling, noisy dining room with hardwood floors and ceiling and neighborhood feel? 5 stars. Food? Meh, 2 stars. :(
Very disappointed in the food here, especially since it's a little pricey. I got the chicken tostada salad and the chicken was so dry I didn't even eat it. I literally had about 5 bites and threw away the rest. I even asked the waiter which was better, the curry or the tostada and he recommended the latter. Don't order it - you'll be sorry.
My boyfriend got the Belgian waffles hollandaise and they were overcooked; so crispy they were tough for him to even cut with a knife.
I have to admit, the tortilla soup I had as an app was delicious. The complimentary muffins are okay, but they were banana walnut and you could barely taste the banana flavor. Also delicious? The fat free carrot cake cream cheese muffins.
But, all in all, the lackluster main entrees unfortunately colored our overall experience there. Too many other great breakfast spots to spend money in. -

This is in the heart of Santa Monica on Montana. It's a cute neighborhood with lots of shops and restaurants.
I had huevos rancheros and thought it was very good. They have a unique take on this simple dish but, while I liked it, I found myself wishing for a more traditional preparation. They use toasted blue corn tortillas, eggs sunny side up, some pinto beans, salsa, sour cream, and guacamole. It sounds like the traditional version but all the ingredients are done a little differently than that.
This place is busy but the friendly service and warm atmosphere made it seem intimate.
I was a little scared by some of the lower ratings here on Yelp, but I didn't find those warranted. Good food, reasonable price, good service, and a nice place. I don't think you can go wrong!
Tip: Parking is hard to find in this area. They have a parking lot in the back so check there first! -

Santa Monica, CA
We go here for brunch about once a month. Their croissant french toast is often fantastic, and I've been happy with many of their egg dishes. They are very inconsistent, though. Over the past 4 years there have been occasions when the griddle stuff wasn't cooked all the way through, occasions when the staff has refused to swap an english muffin for my potatoes (one week: of course! next week: you get free muffins so we can't do that), and occasions when no wait staff came to bring us water within 10 minutes of us sitting so we left. But we keep trying because it's walking distance and when they're good they're really good. If you go on the weekend, expect large loud families and to wait for your water, but if you're relaxed and pack a bottle of water in your bag then you'll probably have a good time.

Come here for the cakes -- they are delicious. each slice brings you close to $7 :T but you get compensated by the large portion! :) the size of the cakes make me feel better. Really though, cakes here are so good.
Though the food is good, it's expensive. I noticed that most of the clientele here seem to be regulars and 40+.
Bruschetta and two dishes during lunch came out to about $60. The price for the food detracts from the taste of the food for me so in the end it feels like the food is just okay.
As for parking, there is a scarcity in the back. All the spaces are really small as well so be careful backing out! There's plenty of street parking though. -

They only serve the delicious muffins on the weekends. That's my favorite part about this place.
All the brunch items are good but nothing great. -
Review from Russ B.
nice place. i had the orange curry chicken salad. Didn't taste any curry but it was very good. They kept my drink filled and the waiter was attentive

Had the blue corn huevos rancheros for Sunday brunch - delicious. Great toffee latte too. Service was a little slow but it was super busy and the waitstaff watched out for each other and were all friendly.

Review from Sylvie C.
It's not the best, but it's not the worst. Extremely family friendly - the several times I've been there (all for sunday brunch), it's been mostly families with young kids, and then my friends and I.
The positive:
Start of the meal with free mini muffins!! The last time we went there, I was complaining the whole ride there, and at least these mini muffins made me think twice!
The negative:
Service was really slow and terrible. Perhaps because we were the youngest group in there?? Who knows. Almost every time I've been, we've had to wait an extremely long time for our food, and then even longer to get the check.
The food is just OK. I hate when I go to brunch, and the whole time I'm wishing that I just made my own brunch at home. (My eggs are bomb! Come to Chez Sylvie and I'll treat you right) Nobody's meal looked particularly appetizing...I also hate when I see food, and my appetite disappears. (isn't that sad??!!)
I've had:
The smoked mozzarella and tomato omelette - it was alright. That's all I have to say about that.
The veggie frittata - I never thought I'd say "there were too many veggies!" But there were. It was just a muddled mess of flavors, and it was a giant plate. Could have fed a family of four.
The omelettes don't come with toast. What?!?! Because of the muffins??! I had to order toast on the side. What kind of brunch spot is this. My toast was burnt.
I only have fond memories of 17th street cafe bc of the company I've had while dining there (aww!), but I really really hope I don't ever have to return.
p.s. i've also had a single sweet potato fry. it was actually delightful -

Location. Ingredient cost. Service Salary. Overhead. All play an important part in determining the menu price of any restaurant. But at Seventeenth Street Cafe & Bakery, there is a serious disconnect between actual cost and a menu price that is satisfactory to patrons.
We visited on a weekday and while there were a few other patrons, it wasn't exactly packed. For this visit we ordered two salads and a pizza and the grand total came out to be around $42. This is absolutely unacceptable in the regards that I've been to five star establishments where the same order would have cost us ten dollars less and be of a higher caliber.
The waitress was friendly enough but I'd be surprised if she's provided service where she's gotten more than a 15% tip.
I read that this restaurant changed ownership and while I never visited under the previous management, the current ownership would be lucky if they last the next three years.Comment from Todd W. of Seventeenth Street Cafe & Bakery 11/6/2011

Eh- I've been here several times throughout the years and I always have big hopes for this place- unfortunately, this last visit will be my last. There just is no excuse for rude service.
First of all, the food was below "eh". Second, the older lady behind the counter was RUDE and unfriendly. Third, the prices are ridiculous for the bland food.
What we ordered:
- Chopped salad: the worst chopped salad I've ever had
- Salmon pasta - very bland
- Seventeenth Street Cioppino - had high hopes for this one, I mean, it has the name of the restaurant on it...but noooooo...it was HORRIBLE. It seemed like they just put a whole bunch of seafood and cooked it in water. It was very bland.
Their bfast is nothing special either, but it got worse throughout the years. -
Review from Laura D.
Ya know, I'm a fan of this place even though I don't think their food is terrific. It's a lovely place to be, has a smaller inside room where it is less noisy, but the outside tables look out at Montana avenue, people watching...
But I just never want to write home about the food. Diane had the grapefruit chicken avocado salad, which is one of the favorites in this place, and it was nice but somehow not spectacular.
The veggie burger was a good burger. I ordered sauteed veggies instead of salad and they were delicious but had too many spices (I tasted lots of thyme maybe marjoram and others). Way too many spices for my taste. Maybe should have ordered the veggies without anything.
Anyway, it was a decent meal but not super. And as I said, I'm just a fan of this place anyway -- it's convenient, nice crowd, good people watching, and right next door to a small Williams Sonoma store.
PS I keep forgetting that what I like this place for (aside for atmosphere and location) is their BREAKFAST. That;'s when they shine.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

What a "delicious" surprise. Was driving around looking for a new spot and walked into this art filled Gem. The Mimosas were incredible. Our waitress, Ariena was fast, friendly and celebrating her birthday with a smile. The food, when it arrived was so appealing that the three women at the next table could not stop looking. (I asked one if she wanted a sweet potato fri) My chicken breast sandwich was perfect and so was everything else.

True Story: The rudest, bitchiest waitress I have ever come across works at this restaurant. Very unfortunate, as the food is quite good (albeit overpriced), but the service is honestly a joke.
A young woman (will not name names) was serving my friend and I on a QUIET weekend evening. It was still early, and there appeared to be quite a few elderly people eating. Fine by us. We were seated and waited for MENUS. And waited. And waited. Until finally, I got up and asked her if we could get water and menus.
So, we're finally ready to order. We wait, and wait, and wait again. I track her down and she makes her way to our table.
I am in the middle of making my order, and dead in the middle, she interrupts me and says "Oh, I need to go take the dessert order for the table over there. They are elderly and have been waiting."
I LOST IT. I am not kidding, she literally stopped us mid-order and left. I finally found a manager, told her the problem, and they promptly changed our waitress with someone more competent.
This is not the only bad service I have experienced her -- simply the worst. It's always packed (fine by me) but there seems to be a huge organizational lack when it comes to seating, etc. Could be much better managed. Also, food is way overpriced.
It's a real shame this place can't get it together, because it could be much more pleasant with just a few simple adjustments! -

Went in to get a light lunch but the lunch menu was full on meal type deal. we asked for coffee and a pastry which they said sure no issue. The pastry / cheescake was superb, large slices, coffee was in a small cup with refills having to be asked for. Wait staff flitted around doing alot of nothing, you had to call them over for service. Very noisy too, hard to hear yourself think.
I know its changed management and the food may be good but the wait staff really need to get their act together -

This is just on the verge of four stars in my book. When I saw the Yelp Deal that was $25 for $50 at this place that was just up the street from my place, I couldn't resist. I had never heard of it but i was hoping to find a new neighborhood favorite.
Is it my new local favorite spot? No. But I did have a very nice time and really enjoyed my food. I had the oak smoked salmon salad, which was absolutely delicious with feta, mushrooms, and an amazing sesame dressing. My date had the granny smith apple and walnut salad, which we both agreed was pretty flavorless and boring. We also got a pretty standard order of sweet potato fries. I wished it had come with some sort of fun dip instead of just plain old ketchup, but the fries definitely hit the spot.
When the check arrived, our very nice waitress informed us that we still had $20 to spend. She suggested that we take something to go, so I jumped on the chance to get some of their skinny cupcakes. I got one of each kind and really enjoyed the ones I tried. My favorite so far has been the carrot cake. They also have vanilla, chocolate, red velvet and lemon. The flavors are great for being so low calorie and fat free, but I have to say you can tell in the texture that it's low-fat.
As for the ambiance, I would say this is a high-class family restaurant. While there were tons of kids there, it still seemed clean and a lot classier than a Norm's or other places I'd consider kid-friendly! -

I did not waste anytime in writing this review, considering I am just signing my check at the 17th street cafe. Little say say I was not impressed.
We were originally seated adjacent to the Geriatric Woman's party in the back private room. Why the host thought two twenty something males would enjoy themselves there is beyond me. Overall the service was good and the waitress was very nice and funny. However the puddle of grease that accompanied my omlette almost made my face break out as if I were a pubescent teenager again. Safe to say, I will not be going back anytime soon. -

I just found out that Lenny no longer owns the 17th Street Cafe (why his image is prominently displayed on the restaurant's website is still a bit confusing and deceiving).
I guess that fact explains why I (and others) had such a miserable experience with our so-called "expired" Groupon coupons.
So, just to be clear, I will continue to patronize Lenny's Deli in the Palisades as Lenny has always demonstrated both his professional integrity and his desire to treat his customers with respect.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the current owners of the 17th Street Cafe. To Smoochie Welker at 17th Street Cafe, I hope this Groupon fiasco has taught you an invaluable lesson in customer service.
As for me, I'm afraid you won't be seeing my smiling face at your establishment in the future, and I'm pretty sure that's perfectly A-OK with you. What a shame. -

I've dined here for breakfast a couple of times using groupons. The service and food are less than mediocre, their cupcakes are not bad, but not great either. I would've never pay their full price to dine here nor would I recommend the place to anyone.
What pushed me over the edge was that they wouldn't honor my groupon which was expiring today. The fact that they wouldn't honor shows that they don't care about the customers. Though groupon did give me a full refund, that doesn't make it okay in my book. I took my time to go to their restaurant, hoping to have a nice meal, but they simply didn't care. They didn't even act sorry, in fact, they said "it's up to us what time we end our deal" with an attitude to go with it! I went there around noon... Not even close to the end of their business hour.
My guess is that they are going out of business, so they could careless about having return customers. If not, I'm sure they will go out of business soon with the way they treat many of the customers. -

I'll keep this short and sweet. Went here because we were starving and had a 20% off your bill check in. Not to sound "yelp snobby" but I typically stay away from flat 3 starred places for this exact reason.
Service was slow (didn't get our drinks until 10 minutes after our meal arrived), Food was overcooked and bland, Atmosphere was not intriguing.
I say, keep walking down Montana!
