This place is a gem.  My husband and I stayed here for 2 days for our wedding anniversary and wished that we could stay there longer.  The location of this B&B is perfect for our romantic getaway.

Our room was very spacious with a breathtaking view of the bay.  The furnishings in the room are exquisitely beautiful.  Everything from the service staff, breakfast, location of this place is perfect.

Eh. It was simply a mediocre visit for my husband and I. We had just spent 2 days at a phenomenal B&B in Napa (for about $100 less per night), and to end up here was not what we expected. It was slightly stuffy (we are in our 30's ... the majority of the guests seemed to be older), and the Victorian theme was a little overdone. Don't get me wrong - the house is simply beautiful. Stunning, but the decor was too much. We did have a fantastic view of the ocean, and had a nice walk along the shore at dusk. However, after Napa and the following 2 days which we spent in Cambria at a B&B on the ocean .....we definitely believe that the customer service, perks, breakfast, and scenery were better elsewhere. It just didn't seem "homey" like a B&B should be....but rather like a corporate version of a B&B. We had just gotten married at a Victorian manor in Healdsburg (including similar in price), and the staff there really worked to ensure that there was a personal touch in all things....

All in all...our visit wasn't the best, but it was clean and the view was beautiful. We just quickly questioned how we could have better spent our money that night.

We had never stayed at a B&B and had no idea what to expect.
Must say, Seven Gables Inn does not do the other B&B places any favors as the bar has been set very high from here in on.

The whole experience was delightful starting with the spectacular view from our room, the scrumptious breakfast and the terrific service from all the staff.  Shout out to the servers at breakfast and Diane at the front desk.

For a homebody like me to want to stay another night at the end of our stay - well that guarantees the place 5 stars!!!

Piece of advice - check-in early and take advantage of the kayaking and cycling that is on offer close by.

Simply, your quintessential B&B.

Historic.
Cute.
Well furnished and unique rooms and decor.
Great Breakfast.

Bonus: Amazing views of the bay. We watched otters playing in the kelp while we had our breakfast in a windowed alcove.

The staff was polite, pleasant and helpful.
Just a perfect B&B experience.

This place is AMAZING! (KUDOS to my fellow YELPERS for the very helpful reviews!!) I stayed in the "Ocean Mist" room for my anniversary, which was absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!

-The staff was very friendly
- The 4-6pm complimentary wine & cheese tasting had 5 different types of cheeses & wines. =) (YUM!!)
- The 8-9pm homemade fresh cookies & milk was a sweet way to end the day. =)
- There was an ample amout of street parking if you weren't able to grab one of the six parking stalls available on the property (first come first serve)
- Breakfast was delicious. The eggs were made to order.

I will definitely be coming back to this place and HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT for a romantic get away!

An absolute beauty on the Monterey coast. Everything a bed and breakfast should be. Their breakfast every morning is to die for, the rooms are very nice and the overall feel is romantic. The decor in the main house is stunning. And the cookies and milk, wine and cheese and other snacks and drinks are just the icing on the cake. My husband and I spent a few nights here on our honeymoon, and even though the weather was crummy, we had a great time because the place was so gorgeous and there are cute restaurants nearby. Speaking of which - Seven Gables has a very, very helpful feature for out of towners: menus from every place in the area. Literally hundreds! We were able to find places we liked easily.

Woohoo! This is the best B&B anywhere in USA that we have stayed. Seven Gables easily outrun those in Mendocino, Lake Tahoe, or any of the resort places in NE such as Finger Lakes and Cape Cod.

This is not a paid commercial, but a real eyewitness impression:

1. Location, location, location! Unobstructed site on water front near Lover's Point Park and Beach. Cross the street and we can get on the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail, which connects to Cannery Row in just 15 min walking. Ditch the car and reduce a lot of carbon footprints.

2. The interior decor is 100% French antiques. The bed is especially soft and comfy, even better than any 5-star hotel. Two large arm chairs are also very comfy to sit in front of the picture window. Live like Louis XVI, especially with the afternoon happy hour every day!

3. We stayed in Crespi room which is on the 2nd floor ($255 per night, senior discount of 20% is available). Through the 3-panel picture window, we can see the closeby rocky shore and Monterey Bay, and the land beyond. If we look down, the front garden with running stream is visible (see picture). At night, we do not close the drapes so that we can see the flickering night lights on the long stretch of land between Sand City and Moss Landing. Without a TV in the room, that night view was very nice entertainment when accompanied by our own music CD (played in the boom box provided).

4. Very thoughtful comfort items, such as bottled water and snack bars in the room, and coffee/tea, fruits and cookies in the common use living room. There is a binocular in every room and around the common use areas.

5. Now let's get to the part about food. I am going to list all the items since their website does not mention any detail at all. After all, it's the Breakfast in B&B that makes an overnight stay more special.

For breakfast, warm items included French toasts with raisin & fruit chutneys (another day it was quiche with risotto & veggies inside -- all very tasty), scrambled eggs, and sausages (premium quality, not like Denny's). Cold items included fully riped fruits such as cantaloupe, honey dew (another day pineapple, water melon), yogurt, and home made cereals. Pastries included muffins (corn and blueberry), chocolate croissant (yummy), marble bread, and biscuit. The coffee tasted like from Peet's -- strong and rich.  Full selection of tea bags and juices.

For happy hour (pardon me, it's called Wine and Cheese), 4 local Monterey wineries are represented, one on each day. One day there were 4 bottles, 2 white and 2 red. Another day, there were 6 bottles, including a sparkling wine. But wait, they are also quite generous with the food. Besides several kind of gourmet cheese, there were lobster veggie salad (another day it was seafood salad, with lots of shrimp and crab meat mixed) and herb dip for veggie strips such as carrot, red & yellow bell peppers, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and even steamed asparagus. For nondrinker, there was sparkling cider.

6. The staff always shows up in force during breakfast and wine times. They serve wine and coffee/juice, and always politely ask if we want refill or take away empty dish. Some would start casual conversation with the guests or answer questions. Their presence really made the social hours more family/friend like.

We had stayed in Seven Gables before. This time around, may be because of upgraded management style, we felt more satisfied and enjoyed the stay more than before. Yep, this place is as good as it gets!

We just returned from a three day stay. This was our first visit to a B&B and after an exhaustive search we decided on this inn. We were looking for a venue which offered close proximity to the water, within walking distance of DT Monterey, no pets and attentive service.  Before our trip, I discovered two clients of mine who had also stayed here and LOVED it.    Approx. two weeks before our visit, they called us to ask if we required assistance with dinner reservations  (nice touch).  Ther is nothing like waking up to the sound of waves and sea gulls outside your window.
* Heavenly Beds
* Very clean rooms, and bathroooms
* Outstanding breakfasts- 3 servers at breakfast for a group of no more than 20 people  (almost unheard of  these days)
* Loved the wine and cheese, milk and cookies
We are back home now and this trip was one of the most relaxing we have experienced in a long time- can't wait to go back.

A+ Amazing!
FABULOUS.

Raves:
--Diane and the rest of the staff was very friendly, and took great care of us.
--The bed was amazing and comfy.
--Spa amenities in the bathroom were great.
--Wine and cheese (as well as breakfast) was very classy, and you get to mingle with the other guests.

Sigh, can we go back yet?

We had a wonderful experience here for our anniversary this summer.  If you like romantic victorian style architecture and furnishings, lovely gardens with water features, and view of the Monterey Bay at Lover's Point, you'll find no better setting.

After checking in, we partook (is that a word?) in the wine and cheese hour which is in the elegant parlor area in the main house, which has bay windows on all sides  (and binoculars--I'll come back to those later) that make you feel like you're on the water.  The wine pours are generous (more than half a glass for every kind--like 6 or 7) and the cheese selection (3-4) is top quality (had the best havarti I've ever tasted) as well as yummy brownies and fresh fruit.  There are some good eateries within walking distance of the inn (Primo is the one we tried--small plates), so if you taste a little too much wine, you can walk it off to your next meal.

In that same common area, coffee and hot drinks are on tap all day and into the evening.  I'm not a habitual coffee drinker (working on it) but it was so good that I had it at least several times a day when we were there.  In the evenings, they serve freshly baked cookies and milk.

I haven't even gotten to breakfast yet, so here goes.  It's a buffet and it's spectacular.  It varied on the two mornings we were there, but both times included an egg dish, sausage, and a side dish like potatoes.  All were flavorful and satisfying.  There's a self-serve toaster, yogurt, and fresh fruit, as well as coffee, tea, and three kinds of juice.

Staff are always on hand and are very friendly and helpful.

The rooms are immaculate and nicely decorated, though I admit to being disappointed that the beautiful comforter shown in the picture of the Victorian Room on the website wasn't there--it was a simple white one instead.  But the bed (king size in that room) was very cozy and the ocean view was awesome.  I somehow thought the room would be a little bigger, but it worked out fine.

There are no TVs in the rooms (only in the cottages and the parlor of the main house--people were watching the olympics together every evening). There is, however, great wireless access. We were able to connect to http://hulu.com to watch our latest small screen addiction--Burn Notice.

The bathroom was pretty standard, but it was cool that it had a mini frig, which we could use to store the yummy cheeses we got at the Carmel cheese shop and the leftover olives from Primo.  The robes were the most luxurious I've ever worn--had they not been $80 apiece, I would have bought one.  The bath products were nice, not my favorite scent (too minty) but salon quality.  I loved the bubble bath (a different brand) but it was not a freebie (huge bottle) so I couldn't take that home.

They also gave us a gourmet chocolate bar as a treat for our anniversary--it was elegantly placed on the bed with a welcoming note.  And of course the customary chocolates (Dove minis) each night on the pillow.

Every room comes with a set of binoculars, which, ideally, shouldn't leave the room, but my husband couldn't resist taking them with us to the beach for our first sunset, and I ended up leaving them on a bench.  He raced back to find them, but alas, they were gone forever.  So he told one of the hotel staff and asked if we would have to pay for them.  She said she'd have to see about it.

When we checked out, we bought some champagne glasses, but the binoculars didn't come up on the bill, so we thought that must have been giving us great customer service (after all, it's very pricey to stay in the Inn).  Unfortunately, later in the week, we got an invoice in the mail showing they had billed our credit card for $37.  I called to inquire and they said that was the standard cost for losing the binoculars and that the original staff member should have told us that.  Yes, she should have.

Despite that snafu and the not quite as fancy room as I thought, we would love to stay at Seven Gables again...maybe in another seven years when we've saved up for it!  I would like to try a room in the main house or the beach house, as the guest house (where our room was) is set back a little.

There is a 20% discount to returning guests (Sun-Thurs) so if we were willing to downgrade rooms, we might be able to afford to return sooner...

Many moons ago (when I still watched TV) there was a Visa or Mastercard commercial that spotlighted Seven Gables Inn.  This was in the 90's sometime...

So when I got engaged in the early 2000's, this place came to mind.

I was a bit worried since I had never stayed at a Bed & Breakfast before.  This experience opened me up to trying new places to stay... away from the corporate hotels of the world.

The view was fantastic and the bed was the best I had ever slept in.

My wife and I spent the night at Grandview Inn... which has always been a part of Seven Gables, but now they've just consolidated under one name.

They helped me with hotel reservations, wine, roses, the whole nine yards.  They staff was helpful and made our stay completely awesome.  Everything went without a hitch.

This was 6-7 years ago now and I'm itching to go back again...

If you want to try a B&B and never have, 7 Gables will spoil you... so beware!!!  And enjoy!

The best qualifier one can give of this place is "tourist trap".  If you have never been to Monterrey and don't know what to expect, this might just be the BB for you.

Looking forward to my 12th anniversary and 11th visit to this finer than fine B&B. We stay in the Cypress room almost every year unless someone beats us to reserving it. We love the huge picture window and being set back a little from Ocean Ave. What's especialy fun is aside from our anniversary night dinner (used to be the "Old Bath House" and now "Fandango's for the 2nd year) we NEVER have to visit the same restaurant twice, although we have in the past. Because there are sooo many to choose from in the area.

After much consideration & research, I finally settled on this place and proceeded to panic...with so many choices, and only one night/day to enjoy on the Monterey Peninsula, would THIS be THE place?  The NYTimes travel section featured it in their "36 Hours in Monterey," & that probably affected my decision...and I'm glad it did...the room was beautiful, discounted for the winter (20%, a GREAT deal), looked out onto the stunning coastline, and aside from the occasional neighbor traffic (it IS a B&B, so this lack of total privacy is to be expected) it was very quiet.  They offer afternoon wine & cheese (fresh, & plentiful enough to be lunch), homemade cookies with milk before bed, and a FULL breakfast (eggs, bacon, yogurt, fruit, cereal, juice, coffee...).  The staff was extremely friendly but non-invasive and there's an easy walk up to the downtown area and the shore walk-way is right beneath the property.  I can't wait to return!!
