15 reviews for Seven Bar and Grill
Last week my mom and I were doing some business in the fashion district and we decided to grab a bite to eat. Everywhere you looked there was a restaurant but our friend who works up the block recommended Seven.
I really enjoyed the lunch there the bread basket was yummy, the waiter was very pleasant and the food was good.
My mom got a chicken frittata that was very tasty and I got a grilled chicken and mango salad that was very good. They gave me enough chicken for probably two meals so it is worth its price.
I want to go back and try there 7 mac and cheese the table next to us ordered it and it looked delicious!
Recent visit to celebrate my success and rave reviews of my poetry reading at an open-mic feature performer at Seven was disappointing. As soon as my party of three entered this lounge there was no air conditioning as it was stifling hot replicating a New York City subway platform in the summer months. We immediately turned our backs and depart the lounge for another venue. When inquiring with the bouncer for the lack of circulation of no air conditioning upon departing the bouncer, turned his back on me ignoring me. Over-priced drinks and service is non-existent, why bother?
N.B. Patrons must be 21 years old and above with valid photo identifcation.

An upscale bar/restaurant with table cloth linens for their tables. It's very dark and extremely… Read more »
EH. That about sums it up. Pricey. The food isn't bad, but it's not note worthy, either. What is noteworthy, however, are prices. VERY high. The service is good, but if your looking for value, look elsewhere.
As far as atmosphere goes, I was very impressed. Warm, trendy, and upscale. Although I must say I wasn't impressed with the unfinished ceilings...they also needed to do some high dusting. We went before the Dave Matthews Band show on 4/14/09. We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and sat at the bar for a cocktail. We were able to mingle with fellow concert goers who were there doing the same thing. Then they changed the music in the restaurant to all DMB...great touch and really energized their guests and melted the night together.
Then it was off to the table. The table was very nice. White linen, and a candle in the center. The silverware needed to be polished. Also, our table was missing the salt shaker.
We sat down and were greeted by our server within approximately 6 minutes. Our drink orders were taken and we were told about the specials. Our waitress was very knowledgeable of the menu. She came back and took our appetizer orders and took our menus. We thought to ourselves, "hmmm, that was odd." We were served our appetizers, ate, then our server cleared the table completely and said, "anything else for you?" We said, "yes, we'd like to order our entrees now." Perhaps Seven management needs to teach their staff some basic sales skills or actively suggestive sell. Service-wise, the rest of the meal looked up. Their server's assistants paced around each section of the restaurant and subtly cleared tables as needed. Each table was kept impeccably clean. After some time, the restaurant became busy, but the staff maintained orderly chaos.
The food was delicious. From the salads and appetizers to the entree to dessert and coffee. I had the pear and roquefort salad for an appetizer and the skirt steak with avocado and onion mashed potatoes. My fellow dinners had the Rigatoni and Swordfish. Food quality was outstanding and presentation was decent. The entire menu was innovative and inspired. The only thing that left a little bit to be desired was the wine list. I would have liked to see a few more options from a place like this.
After all is said and done, I would return. I recommend it to those who are looking for something a little bit different. There are exotic menu options as well as traditional selections for those who are less adventurous.
What a find--just around the corner from our hotel, we had a very enjoyable, reasonably-priced dinner on a business trip. I loved that it was quiet and relaxing--it seems like every other NYC restaurant is so loud you have to yell to be heard by your dinner companions...maybe that's just my middle-agedness talking, but I enjoyed the dinner, the wine, the conversation, and went back to the hotel to get ready for meetings in the morning.
I would definitely go back next time I'm in town.
Eh, what can I say?
Very middle-aged crowd, decent drinks and limp/undercooked french fries.
Definitely put it on the company's Amex.
Otherwise, not really worth it.
If not for present company, it'd be as dull as party in a tree trunk's pants.
If there ever were such a thing.
I came to Seven with a large group for a company function, so I can't really vouch for the standard prices. The environment is very nice, a decent sized bar, some lounge seating in the front and regular seating in the back and upstairs. The food was also good - I had a green tomato gazpacho, Atlantic salmon and the raspberry cheesecake for dessert. All were very tasty. I'm not sure if I would make a special trip here again, but only because I'm not really around the Penn Station area all that often. However, I think Seven would make a great place for after-work drinks and snacks, or a more upscale bite to eat if you have time before catching a train at Penn.
I've been here twice, and both times were company expensed. With that being said, I would NOT come here and pay for the food on my personal card! The crowd is mostly over 40, and the food is really just very basic! (and for some weird reason, I had warm (as opposed to hot) plates on both occasions)
This seems like the only decent business lunch place around the block, so come here for business......and don't mix business with personal pleasure!
Considering other local options - this was the closest I could do for taking someone to lunch that 'looked' ok. There are other establishments nearby - chances are that the bar will be full of people enjoying a lot of pints at lunchtime. Not that there is anything wrong with that!
It appears overpriced - but it looks ok. A lot of business lunches seem to happen here and the prices are geared toward your corporate AMEX.
Granted - I only had the chicken caesar salad...but come on! If you can't make a great caesar salad should you be allowed to run a restaurant?
The lettuce was so so - some of the undesirable chunks were tossed in by a lazy prep cook.
The croutons were Flinstonian. Way too big for anyone to manage with a fork. I left them on my plate out of fear that if I tried to split one into quarters to make it a manageable bite it would fly off my plate and injure the closest person next to me. Buyer beware: I think you could unhinge your jaw trying to negotiate one of these suckers whole.
The dressing was bland. Not enough salt, pepper, lemon juice. Nothing. Lame.
They do provide a whole chicken breast that is cut with some precision. This too was flavorless - if it were grilled and had a bit of char or flavor from the fire this would have helped.
The Perrier was delicious though!
2 stars for food - completely forgettable.
1 star for atmosphere - The cool animal print sofa up front and logo make this place seem much cooler than it really is
I work about 2 blocks from Seven and if you'd seen the choice of restaurants nearby, you'd understand why Seven deserves three stars. I usually go there when I have to take a client out and make a presentable case out of myself. With the corporate card at my disposal, Seven's overpriced menu does not really bother me, though I'd never choose to go there if I was paying my own way.
Bottom line, Seven has solid food, nice decor but also has slow service and a generally snobbish clientele in a generally unattractive neighborhood. And the place has the moodiest heating system ever! It seems like the heater decides to heat the second floor to 100 degrees on a whim and suddenly stops working and you start getting frost bite. The waiter is also capricious because he serves your table until it's time for you to ask for the check then he's nowhere to be found, and no one else would dare bring it for you. Then you're like, "What the heck I already ruined my diet, I might as well order desert", then there are ten waiters to take your order.
On a lighter note, the Arugula salad is delicious. It does get cramped during lunch time, I'd recommend making a reservation or waiting until 2 or arriving early.
Had a good experience here - popped in for a late night drink on a Saturday night - late night being midnight - boy what a dead neighborhood this is! We were some of the only people left at the bar, and only one table was still eating dinner.
The interior is nice - classy, clean, but not overbearingly so. The bartender was attentive and friendly. My $8 glasses of pinot grigio were quite good, and everyone else seemed to enjoy their beverages as well. The cocktail menu was small, but nice - a little overpriced for my taste ($12 martinis). We tried to order some snacks but the kitchen closed at midnight.
For our second round, we moved over to the couch area by the door. For the second time in one weekend, I was amazed to find anywhere in Manhattan where you can sit and get a drink and there's actual couch space. I need to reassess my "never go to Manhattan on a weekend" rule, as I guess there are still some places that don't get mobbed.
Not my first choice of hangouts, really more of a restaurant than a bar, but if you're near Penn Station and don't want a dive bar, this one's pretty nice. Open till 2, and we were the only patrons for the last half hour before that. And we didn't feel like we were being rushed out, which was really nice.
Very sleepy (dark), very swank, linen-tablecloth restaurant filled with wayward tourists and lonely businessmen with laptops at tables.
Food was quite nice, service was speedy but the place lacks any real energy or character.
2.5 stars would be more appropriate for this joint.
While I was in New York visiting friends, we needed to find a restaurant near MSG to meet some other friends before a hockey game. We chose Seven because it was the only joint nearby that looked nicer - meaning not a chain and not a fast food place.
I had the scallops, which were 4 big scallops on top of a little bit of fennel. While they were good, I felt like they could have definitely given you more food for the $27 they charged. One friend had the steak, which she claimed was very good. Another friend had the chicken (as he's been having stomach issues and needed something bland) and he said it was definitely bland. The drinks were reasonable enough, which was a saving grace for us.
Overall, the food was good - but not worth the high prices they were charging! You're better off building in the extra half hour to eat somewhere better that's further away.
I only find my way to this part of town if I am going to MSG or looking at guitars (30th Street Guitars). Most of the eateries are casual bar type or fast food places which serve you well when you want cheap, fast eats but Seven is stand out from its neighbors.
I am a bar guy! When I am alone or with a friend, the first spot I look at is the bar. Are the stools comfortable? Is there a foot rail? Is the bar height good for leaning and drinking or do I feel like a kid barely able to see over the top? Is a large enough TV in view and can I watch a game? All of these are thoughts I have when I sit at a bar, especially one I am visiting for the first time. So, getting back to Seven, the bar is comfortable, they serve food and the modern dark wood design is a stand out in this neighborhood. I like the app-a-teasers which are another way to describe tapas. You can order one or add some value to your choices by selecting 3, 4 or 5. Over the course of time, I have tried them all and must say each time the food has been good; Grilled Black Angus Sirloin Shish Kebab, Golden Potato & Truffle Cigars and Baby Popcorn Shrimp are favorites. The beer, wine and bar selection is standard stock for midtown. And the staff has been professional in a "doing their job" kind of way.
An average value for your dollar, Seven has been a "return to" place not far from the madness of MSG on event nights.
This places gets stars for being the only place in extremely close proximity to Penn Station with a touch of class, however it truly is nothing out of this world special. The food is ordinary and the prices a bit high for what you get. I think the place has potential - when you walk in you think you could be in for a treat, with its high ceilings and private booths - but the food misses the mark.
