Been through Sergio`s a couple of times now. Great little joint, very tasty, good service, and relative to the area, rather inexpensive. Well rounded menu. The spaghetti and meatballs- fantastic.
-1 star just due to the lack of personality the physical building has. The interior could be done up a bit, but otherwise, it`s a nice place.
Pretty terrible.
Checking this place out after fleeing the mis-management that is the Los Altos Bar & Grill, the prices looked alright. That's because the portions are ridiculous. I'm all about "healthy" portions, as opposed to "American" portions, but honestly, our Fisti di Mari (or whatever they called it) was pathetically short on the linguine. The flavors in the lemon butter sauce and the seafood were pretty good, though the squid was a bit chewy and that usually grosses me out. The recommended wine instead of the sort of "house" chianti, the one that was supposed to be better, was pretty terrible. I'd rather drink The Chuck. The calamari appetizer was okay. I'm pretty sure it was frozen and the breading didn't have much flavor to it. The accompanying sauce was uninspired cocktail sauce. It was still the best part of a bitterly disappointing meal.
The server was nice, thus sparing Sergio's from a one-star rating. Though he did seem to make a side comment about the speed at which we ate our meals, which was unprofessional and unwarranted. We pretty much wanted to get out of that miserable dinner and on with the rest of our evening.
I seriously question the levels of taste and expectations of people when I see a place like this raking in the four and five-star reviews. Completely unearned.
This was supposed to be for BFs birthday. I spent the rest of the night apologizing.
Who knew that Los Altos could produce a good restaurant for dinner. This place is
excellent. The restaurant looks upscale. You'll be comfortable bringing the date you want to impress here. The prices are reasonable.
The food is wonderful and the service is awesome. Just the right mixture of attentive, knowing the menu, and out of the way when not needed.
I had a pasta dish which was perfectly cooked.
Extra nice touch was the free ameretto brought with the coffee.
I'll definitely be back.

5 stars if I factor in the price.
I concur with Fritz V. and "was a little hesitant about going to sergio's, ...Inexpensive italian restaurants, particularly "southern italian", often overdo the tomato sauce, garlic, and and then cover it all up with lots of parmesan and pepper. " (This applies even more so to the slightly Americanized Italian joints in Santa Clara)
When the food comes we were pleasantly surprised.
The seafood in the linguini Tutti Mare is extremely fresh,
The salmon was perfectly done, flavoring on the light side.
The minestrone was definitely home-made.
Great stuff!

Eh.
The tortellini carbonara was good...al dente'ed just right. My SO's ravioli dish was so-so...he wasn't too impressed with the square of melted Kraft cheese on top. The house Chianti was not-so-hot. One of those burning down the throat wines with the afterburn of rubbing alcohol and cork flavor. One of the things that got me was the fact they never refilled my glass of water. Now, it may seem like I am nit-picking but, I wasn't drinking anything else (the Chianti was my SO's). The other thing, that was kind of a pisser, was that we WERE going to try the house special dessert, but the waitress just brings us our check without asking and walks away.
O-kay.
I guess we were done.
*I suppose you could say, "well, you coulda asked" but seriously, Should I Have To??!!??
We tried this place for the first time a couple weeks ago and will definitely go back. We started with the mixed green salad. For entrees we tried the salmon special and the eggplant parmesan. The portions were sized perfectly and the food was tasted very fresh. We'll definitely be going back to try other dishes.
This is the first restaurant I went to when I moved to Los Altos. After driving around, we settled on small quaint place. We had fried calamari and a pasta pomodoro. The calamari was pretty good, not totally nuked out, but still flavorful. The pasta was also really good. All in all I was pleasantly surprised at how good this place was. The prices are pretty good too.
Sergio's is a cozy 34-seat neighborhood restaurant on State Street that has nice interpretations of traditional Southern Italian/Italian-American food. I dined there on a Tuesday night and had the Caprese salad, eggplant parmagiana, and tira misu. The cheese in the Caprese was perfect--light and ice cold. The tomatoes were average. The eggplant was airy and coated not with a heavy breadcrumb batter but a crisp, light tempura-like coating. Just enough tomato sauce and cheese, too--not drowning in cheese. The tira misu was also superb; not dense, not overly sweet. But what makes Sergio's a particular pleasure is the service--attentive, genuinely nice and courteous. A great place for a neighborhood comfort meal with a sophisticated twist.
