What a great little shop! I was heading back to work when the storefront caught my eye...and nose. It's hard to imagine anyone being surprized by what this shop sells...just look in the window and see what looks like a fruit stand of fresh soaps and lotions.
These kinds of shops are almost European in that they do one thing and do it well....rather than a shop owner that fills the store with random crap that they think will sell. You know those kinds of stores...you walk in to browse around and walk out--two hours later and dazed. Places like Serene Vibes invite you in for a quick refreshing change of pace for shopping....walk in, see something you love, buy it and walk out. It's like a little shopping peck on the cheek....instead of a two hour long retail make out session.
I felt welcome the moment I walked into the shop...the smells were rich and well, yummy...without being overwhelming like Yankee Candle or other chain shops. It was a thrill (doesn't take much to thrill me sometimes) to find my favorite brand of incense...one that I've actually made trips to the Cape to find. I grabbed a bunch of them, managing to keep control of my habit of hoarding like an old woman buying fifteen loaves of bread before a winter storm.
The day I made my visit was a freakishly hot day...slow for business on Center street...so, I imagined that the folks in this shop would pounce on me. Instead, they were welcoming without making me feel presured or watched over. A few moments of pleasant chatter and I was on my way...very very happy with my purchase.
It's always nice to support a local business, but especially during these difficult times...I'm happy to add Serene Vibes to my shopping list.
Um, just so you know, this store doesn't sell what you think it sells. The name is really misleading! JP being the lesbian mecca it is, I was like, "Oh, what a great idea, they'll make so much money." And then my gf made me go in here once and I was all, "Maybe we should just go to the one in Brookline, people I know will probably be in the JP branch." And then we went in and it was just freakin soap and incense. WTF?

A nice addition to the shops around JP. They carry tons and tons of exotic smelling soaps and whatnot. The best thing though is their HUGE assortment of $1 incense packs. And it's the good stuff too, from Bangalore--the home of the world's best incense. You only get about 8 sticks, but it's such good quality that one stick will burn for an hour or so.
