recently, my friend was talking about moving out of her place on the lower east side. in spite of the fact that her digs are much smaller than mine, i considered taking over her place for the sole fact that she lives in close proximity to september, my favorite wine store in manhattan. its tiny, its green, its got a great selection, great prices and really friendly, helpful and never condescending staff. i swung by today just to pick up two bottles of the best lambrusco your 15 bucks can buy.

I love their selection and knowledge.  They only sell wines from small vinyards and they keep track of what you buy.  So if you liked a wine and don't remember the name, they will look it up.

All the wines have been very good and I have been able to find affordable wines in their selection.

Recently I bought a white Albarino from Spain... Nora, very good, I have been back several times and I like it more and more.

It's dumb that people would go to another wine store when September exists.  By "dumb" I mean - weird, confusing . . disconcerting even.  Part of my S.O. or "September obsession" if you will, includes but is not limited to;
champagne in a can
the staff (amazing on many levels; knowledge, whit, cosmic connection with my taste and budget)
on-point aesthetic (I would fully move in if they would let me for the lighting fixtures alone)

Pros:
Friendly, knowledgeable staff
Comfortable, pleasing layout & decor
Interesting choices, some smart selections
Free delivery

Cons:
Lacking in the under $15 range
A little overpriced across the board
Goofy - identifying wine by "female producer"?  What's next?  Race of producer?  Sexual orientation of producer?  Whether or not producer is vegan?

If you don't mind paying a little extra for the experience of shopping here you may find September a fun place to patronize.  The staff is great, and the selection is good (extra points for some wonderfully oddball choices thrown in to keep it interesting).  If paying a "too hip for its own good" surcharge annoys you, this place will annoy.  It's a bit too trendy and overpriced for my taste.

I heart September Wines so much.  It's the bestest neighborhood wine store ever.  It's small, so not overwhelming.  The cute, hipster staff has not let me down with their suggestions.  And they deliver for free when it's too cold to leave the house and all you want is a bottle of syrah with which to watch all the episodes of Arrested Development back to back for the umpteenth time.

Let's be frank: after I pay the rent on my shoebox apartment and then write out checks for bills and fritter the rest of my money away on shopping and eating out and meeting friends for drinks and taking the less-occasional-than-I-care-to-admit taxi, I just don't have much left over to be picky when it comes to the wine I take to a dinner party or drink while entertaining guests at home. I mean, theoretically entertain guests at home, since that is actually very difficult to do in shoebox apartments.

Thank GOD I live in the LES, just a couple blocks from the miracle that is September Wines. I told the guy I didn't have a lot of money to blow, so he recommended a few bottles under $15 for me and took care to describe the flavors and textures. I felt like he knew what he was talking about, and if I said I didn't care for something, he graciously and expertly recommended something else he felt to be a better fit.

So... I might be poor after splurging on four bottles, but I will be broke and happy. Broke, drunk, and happy.

While I prefer the vast selection of Astor Wines, September doesn't do a bad job either. The selection is good with some odd picks too - today I picked up a bottle of Magdalener from Alto Adige, the German-speaking region of Italy near the Austrian border. It's not a common wine even in Italy, and the guy that helped me had a lot to say about it when I asked him.

They do carry some very pricey wines (some over $100) but that doesn't mean that you can't find a nice variety of wines in the $8-15 range. I spotted many a bottle with this price from all the regions of the world. I've been to De Vino on Clinton St. as well and I'd have to rate September more highly in the LES-wine-shop category. De Vino is more like a humiliating search for anything that's not a complete rip-off, if you're like me and you want something of reasonable quality at a reasonable price.

Check out September Wines - convenient, interesting selection and decent prices. Salute!

If I worked or lived closer to September W&S, I'd go there for my everyday wine buys.  It's a great, smallish store filled with great buys from around the world.  Last time, i bought a terrific Chilean Gewurztraminer to take to a byob restaurant nearby.  Who knew Chile made gewurztraminers?  I didn't until I popped in here (actually I found it on their web site earlier).

They have a refrigerator for chilled wines which is quite handy for the byob restaurants on the l.e.s.

There could be more bottles under $10 as it's the l.e.s and though there are expensive restaurants now, there are plenty of "starving artists" who could use a bargain.

Attention all wine lovers!  Visit September Wines & Spirits where wine bottles fill up racks along the walls, and have a sip or two.
