Astoria, NY
This is my go-to place in manhattan for latin comfort food. The chicken is packed with spices and delicious flavor, the rice is right on the mark, the maduros are soft, sweet, and perfectly fried, and best of all the prices are super low. Mmmmm their spicy green sauce is worth a trip in itself, I put it on basically everything. Also, their chicken soup hits the spot if you're sick, as long as you like cilantro.
Their delivery is fast and efficient, they take credit card, and they don't have a crazy minimum. I also love eating-in here, the waitresses are so sweet, the atmosphere is quaint, friendly, and familiar, and the cleanliness is top-notch. Oh yeah, and they have materva, MATERVA. Can't get any better. -

Señor pollo, señor pollo, with a name so nice I gotta say it twice!
The chicken is superb, its fresh moist and order a half because the quarter will definitely not be enough. You know how you go to some restaurants and they only have a few standouts, and the rest of the food is run of the mill? Well not señor pollo! The spinach mashed potatoes are too die for, the plantains are twice smashed and fried and are huge and delicious, the potato salad thumbs up, the green salad is spot on!
Now, to all you newbies to Peruvian food, they have a killer green sauce that you put over the chicken and also a chimichurri sauce. Both are devine. But the green sauce, get a couple of extras and you can put it on anything. There is a special they have periodically called shrimp with garlic sauce. The garlic sauce is like shrimp broth based and goes great with white rice and the potato salad or the beans. All in all, you will love all of the food at this restaurant! -
Review from Jane K.
The chicken, it is good.
And it is cheap. For around $8 you'll get a 1/4 rotisserie chicken and two sides. $10 will get you a half chicken and a whole is only $12. And really, while the spinach mashed potatoes are tasty and the steamed veggies are healthy, it's all about the chicken here.
One drawback, delivery here is awful slow. I live maybe two blocks away and it took them over an hour to bring me my meal the other evening. In the future I'm opting for take-out but slow delivery isn't enough to keep me from cluckin'. -

Nothing beats Peruvian chicken! Solid chicken, sauces, and sides. I've only ever gotten take out here, which has always been fast and reliable. I could eat here every night and be totally content.

Amazing rotisserie chicken, but not as crazy about the sides and service is kinda slow. Will try take-out next time. Combo prices are excellent.

Review from John D.
Senor Pollo has quickly become a take-out staple after discovering it hiding under the scaffolding which was above it for 3 years. Seems like the majority of their business is take-out because it's never crowded (not much of a sit down atmosphere).
I don't know if I've ever had jucier roto chicken than what they serve here. Every piece is extremely tender, even the breast. It's spiced up simply with salt, pepper and maybe some lemon. The skin is absolutely dynoMITE! I order the half chicken with 2 sides for $9.50. Mixed rice and beans and sweet plantains every time. God damn is it good but I am stuffed after because I can't stop eating it!
Go here and support them! -

The food here is always freshly made each time I eat there. I usually get the 1/4 chicken with yellow rice and a can of inca cola. I also love the green sauce on the side to put on the chicken. Hmmmm

Manhattan, NY
I've order takeout from here before, but never ate here. 4 of us came here, brought our own 6 pack and went to town.
We ordered a plate of fries (big chunky kind, not thin McD's), a bowl of creamy quinoa (so tasty), big plate of fried rice with chicken (a little on the oily side, but oh so delicioso), plate of friend plantains (always a hit) and 2 whole chickens. Their chickens are truly works of art. So soft, delicate, not dry. And the skin, oh my, the skin. Big shout out to their spicy green sauce.
At the end of all that, it cost us $46 total, for 4 people. Pretty damn reasonable for the East Village. And we were super stuffed. It hit the spot and I am definitely going to come back, in addition to continue ordering out. Cheap, tasty, convenient. Senor Pollo for everyone! -

JAMAICA, NY
My first time eating here, I ordered the fried rice with chicken (a bit oily and flavor wasn't there) and also had the sweet plantains those were delicious as always and an Inca Kola. My friend ordered the fried fish, mashed potatoes with spinach and sweet plantains and Inca Kola which she said it was delicious although would had prefer the aji (green hot sauce) be more spicier. The prices was reasonable and service was good.

Think of how many ways you can blow $11 in NYC with very little to show for it:
- One suit, dry cleaned
- Two-thirds of a rooftop cocktail
- A half-gallon of pre-hurricane Irene milk
At Senor Pollo, you can get a DELICIOUS belly-stretching meal for $11.
The chicken & shrimp dish was AWESOME: oversized portion that was mixed with onions, tomatoes and yellow peppers. Came with two sides. I picked the fried plantains (tasted like dessert) and the steamed vegetables.
This is one of those meals that was so good, I will likely never try anything else on the menu ever again. -

Hands down the best value for delivery in Noho/E. Village. If you're looking for a quick, fairly healthy, and extremely tasty meal the 1/2 chicken meal with two sides is perfection. That green (is it chimichurri?) sauce brings serious flavor to an already not-even-close-to-dry piece of roasted chicken. I'm not at all surprised that a somewhat absurd/hilariously named place gets reviews like this consistently.

Senior Pollo is certainly no competition to the legendary Pio Pio, but when I need to get my Pio Pio fix and no where near the famed establishment this will have to do.
For less than $8 you get a full meal with two sides. Make sure you check your bag before you leave for the green sauce. I got jipped me a few times. -

The rotisserie chicken here is delicious and the service is SUPER fast. I always order it with yellow rice and Spanish potato salad (which is also very good.)

I ordered online for delivery. Got the half chicken combo with rice and beans and the sweet plantains. This review is just for the food since I have never seen this restaurant before. The chicken was amazing! It was HOT, JUICY, and TASTY!! It takes a great place to do chicken right and they got it right! The rice and beans were amazing and the sweet plantains were delicious!
I would go back here again!!!!! -

Umm....Chicken is good..that's it.

Definitely cheaper than Pio Pio.

I was craving chicken one night, and being a 30 second walk from the L train 1st ave stop I decided to check it out. The interior was nothing to write home about, but I took the food to go so it didn't phase me.I got the 1/4 chicken with two sides for $7 and the chicken was so juicy and flavorful! The rice and beans that came with it were legit and filling and the plantains were like a dessert! Check it out if you want some hearty chicken and rice!

Review from Tyler L.
This is an okay Peruvian chicken place in the East Village (similar to the kind that Pio Pio serves). Chicken was very good, with the nice green sauce all these places serve too. The Dominican lady behind the counter was friendly.
However, this is more like a fast food style lunch place - not a sit-down dinner place. The setup inside with its menu and bright colors resembles a fast food place as well. I would recommend the half chicken combo with 2 sides, which is $8.50.
Another time, I tried their chaufa (Peruvian style Chinese fried rice). That was disappointing, as it tasted just like Chinese takeout, and was somewhat small portion-wise for $9. It's probably better to stick to the chicken.
If you've never had them, you can also get a can of Inca Kola (popular soda from Peru) or some chica morada (very sweet!) here as well. -
Review from Jim U.
Senor Pollo is cheap, even by the very low standards of East Village. For the price though, you get a decent and filling meal. It's not extraordinary, but it is definitely functional.
I opted for a meal combo that included a quarter chicken and two sides which I took to be black beans and patacones. My chicken was a leg and thigh that was juicy and flavorful. It was nothing like the real rotisserie chicken I had in Cuzco, Peru though, more like Boston Market perhaps. The patacones were decidedly good though, and I had plenty of them to keep me busy. The black beans were fine, but the way they were served, I may have just preferred to have them with rice. Given that the overall price of about $7 is less than a comparable meal at notable fast food establishments, I think I got the better deal. -

I can't speak to the Peruvian authenticity because I am not familiar with that kind of food, but I do know this is where I go when I really want to get my grub on. Tasty chicken with 2 large side orders for under 8 bucks!
What is the deal with them trying to serve you at your table though? It's a fast food restaurant. Give me my food at the counter and I will take it to my seat and eat it! No need to wait on me and collect tips. -
Review from Ben B.
Senor Pollo is one of those places that you can always count on. Delicious rotisserie Peruvian style chicken with sides guaranteed to fill you up all for $6.50. Not to mention that if you're in a rush they can get you the food all packed up within 3 minutes. Not only that but if you want to sit down and enjoy your time there then you can take advantage of their waiter service.
Regardless of whether you find yourself more of a breast guy or a leg/thigh kinda person you will not be disappointed by Senor Pollo. A quick lunch or a pick up on the go. Just make sure that you try their blended jalapeno sauce it puts that little extra kick into just about every food they serve. -

A Pio Pio like place, I loved this place for the 2 years that I had access to it. I've moved and it's not somewhere I would go since Pio Pio is close by but if you live by this place. ORDER.
The yuca and fries are great! Chicken is delish! It'll save you during winter and it's always so fast and cheap. It's a pretty sweet deal.

Senor Pollo is pretty awesome. Rice and beans w/ 1/4 a chicken is $6.50. Half a chicken $8.50. The chicken is seasoned nicely and pretty delicious. The breast is not dripping with juice, but it's not jerkey either. I'm a leg and thigh guy anyways. The give you pickled onion and this green hot sauce that I want to drink. Don't throw the green stuff out!!!
I hear their shrimp with garlic sauce is legit.
I usually get two 1/4 chicken meals delivered and keep one in the fridge. They are so cheap that I feel bad to have just one delivered.Listed in: How to F@#% up your Blood…

Review from Steve A.
If you need a cheap meal and you are on the go, you can pay $6.50 for a 1/4 chicken and two sides. The chicken is rotisserie style and while it's good, it's nowhere near the quality of Peruvian chicken you can find elsewhere (i.e. Pio Pio). The green sauce was pretty potent and akin to the green sauce at Sophie's. They also have white sauce, which I was puzzled as to what was in it...but it was on the sweet/sour side of the spectrum and it was quite delicious. The tostones here are lovely.

[The scene: Michael D. is standing at the counter at Senor Pollo, addressing a six foot tall chicken wearing a tuxedo]
Hi...uh..b..b..buenas tardes, Senor Pollo! Que tal?
Umm..uh...Por favor: uno half pollo, please. Uh, I mean not "please:" por favor!
Oh! um...with er..con arroz con amarillo... ah... y frjoles negroes. Ummm.. gracias!
And now back to my somewhat more competent English-speaking ability:
*Crispy, salty skin
*Juicy flesh
*Tender rice
*Friendly beans
*Molten plantains
*No waiting
*Readily-available seating
*Name that anthropomorphizes chickens (Senor Pollo)
*Steps from my gym so I can pig out (or in this case "chicken out") literally minutes after exercising
There are probably better Latin rotisserie chicken joints in the city of New York (probably better in the borough of Manhattan, too), but this one achieves (for me, at least) that just right balance of goodness and proximity.
The search for the Platonic perfect Latin rotisserie chicken -- that you will go to the ends of the earth for -- or the ends of the city limits, anyway, will continue! -
Review from David V.
New York, NY
I love this place, but I am biased.
The only 2 things I was looking for were papa a la huancaina and yuca frita that reminded me of what I ate when I lived in Peru. Both were very good, though definitely not outstanding. I finished off the two sides with a bottle of chicha morada which, when bottled, wasn't the same as the authentic stuff in the Andes, but still refreshing.
I've been to places that served papa a la huancaina warm, which is just weird, and with sauces that lacked any spice. At most places in the States, yuca frita is usually very sub-par, and lacks the true crispiness that I loved so much. Senor Pollo fixed all of these problems, and, by doing so, earned big points in my book. If Senor Pollo were in Peru, I would have considered it a solid eatery, and though maybe plain by New York standards, it would have stood out as incredibly clean and modern in Huaraz or Iquitos. -

I used to date a girl from Peru. While I don't miss her, I do miss her sister's Peruvian style cooking of basic latin cuisine. I guess I dated the wrong sister but I digress.
Senor Pollo hasn't quite quenched that craving but the french fried yucca potatoes with a squirt of the green jalapeno sauce was pretty damn good.
It's a basic no frills rotiserrie chicken place. The key to places like this is to stick with the dark meat as the white meat is usually dried out if you catch them at an off cycle.
$6.50 for a quarter chicken with your choice of 2 sides, $8.50 if you go with 1/2 chicken.
Since it was the first time trying the food here, I went with 1/4 chicken along with yucca and maduros (sweet deep fried plaintains).
There were 2 types of sauces - a light green mayo looking sauce and a parsley oil (it's not quite a chimichurri sauce). Most latin establishments use a cilantro based mayo for their chicken. I always ask what's in the sauce before I use it. This is not cilantro. It's made with jalapenos. So if hot sauce isn't your thing, stick with the basic parsley oil on your chicken.
The chicken was okay, the sweet plantains were super greasy but very ripe. This was a cardiac arrest waiting to happen. I thought the yucca with the jalapeno sauce tasted great together.
Wash it down with a Malta, soda or fruit shake.
Decent food at decent prices. It's a good place for take out or an eat in snack if you're in the neighborhood.
Cheers!

Cheap Peruvian takeout. The deal is pretty good. 1/2 chicken with 2 sides for $6.50. They have about 6-8 tables for seating. It's not nearly as good as Pio Pio's chicken but still a good place for on the go.

There are days when I really crave rotisserie chicken, but not just any kind...Peruvian style! Every now and again, I've stop in for either the lomo saltado (beef strips with tomato, peppers and onion) or 1/2 chicken with two sides. Depending on my mood, those will either be the moros and cristianos (black bean and rice medley) with platanos maduros or spinach mash. About the lomo: usually this dish is typically prepared with french fries and here, it's not. This is not necessarily a bad thing if I don't want to be overwhelmed with fries, the meat in the dish is sufficient enough for me.
They also offer an appetizer, papa a la huancaina, a typical dish that is to die for. Unfortunately, I haven't tried in here...yet. I'll save it for my next visit. -

I was extremely underwhelmed by this place after eagerly awaiting its opening. As a huge fan of Pio Pio (look it up if you don't know it), I was excited to find out another Peruvian chicken place was opening in my neighborhood. Unfortunately, this place is nothing like Pio, with pre-cooked sides that were cold and very unimpressive and chicken that is good, but unremarkable. The sides are too expensive and too small (not to mention not good), so the ownership needs to give you more food or charge you less.
Hopefully they will get their act together in the next few weeks, otherwise I will make the trek to Pio Pio when I get an urge for some Peruvian comfort food.
PS - I convinced my roommate to try this with me last night and he has had diarrhea all day.
UPDATE INCREASE FROM 2 to 3 STARS - Because I really wanted to like this place I decided to give it one more shot last night and was much more satisfied with my meal. The portions are still a little small for the price, but the food was all hot and freshly prepared this time and very tasty. -

Review from Irene H.
I stopped by Senor Pollo on the way home last night. I'd read some favorable reviews on "A Passion for Food", I'm a major fan of Pio Pio, and figured I could make a few meals out of whatever I buy.
I got a 1/2 chicken + 2 sides. It was just under $10. I got the rice and beans and Spanish potato salad as the side... the rest of the items just didn't appeal to me. The Spanish potato salad was perfect.
As I was waiting for my order, I noticed a ton of SeamlessWeb orders getting ready to go out. The place looked pretty clean and the staff cordial. The green sauce and cilantro sauce are by the counter and the guy said I could take as much as I want. "Spicy?" "Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't". And he is right. I had to run for water. The chicken is ok. I've had really bad rotisserie chicken before. This was ok. There are barely any dry spots, but it's not as succulent as Pio Pio.
3 stars - I might be back some day, but Pio Pio still reigns. -

Wow, I'm surprised to see all the naysaying for this place. I just moved into the neighborhood and the name of the eatery alone piqued my interest.
My friends and I came here at 9pm after re-locating from Chelsea to our new hood and we were very satisfied with our experience here. For $6.50, you get a 1/4 chicken + 2 sides. The chicken was tasty (especially with the house parseley, garlic and onion sauce and their japaleno sauce which was perfectly spicy) and the sides were very solid. I am something of a plaintain pro and their sweet plaintains were very good. I also got the yuca frita which was pretty good; although I wouldn't say it was the highlight. The waitress working the counter was exceptionally friendly and motherly; and she was actually from Peru!
Point in case: for $6.50, you get a shit-ton of food that will undoubtedly fill you up and they played ambient latino music (including everyone's all time favorite, the Macarena). Now that I live next-door, I'm thrilled to find such a quality eatery at my footstep. -

Damn I love me some peruvian chicken. So moist and flavorful. Last night I ordered the half chicken with peruvian fried rice. The fried rice was just okay, it tasted like something I could easily make but the chicken was the bomb diggity. Melt in your mouth moistness, I wanted to make love to it.
okay maybe not make love to it but I'm actually thinking of ordering it again tonight and trying the other dishes. I think its very affordable too, you can get a dinner for two here for under 15 dollars. I love east village!!!!. -

I've never had peruvian chicken until last year and so far the experience has been a good one. I've had others like pio pio but I prefer senor pollo. It's not too salty, it's fresh and their side salad is soooo much better. I also love their dipping sauce, super spicy and OH SO GOOD! we literally eat some with every bite and are always asking for refills of our squeeze bottle. I also love the maduros (fried plantains). I didn't use to eat them but after a few visits I always make sure we order them now.
This place is super affordable and always delicious!!!!!
