    FOUR STARS FOR THEIR DRINKS.

Came here for Sunday Funday and right after their happy hour ended, damn...
If you're coming here for their food, don't. You won't find any authentic or decent Mexican food here. It's average at best. You can find better fish taco's at Ricky's Fish Tacos, wayyyy better.

Couple things I love about Senor Fish and the only reasons why I would come back: outdoor seating, outdoor music, chips and salsa, guacamole, and their salsa bar.

It's interesting that a place that like would be in Little Tokyo but it's a nice change of scenery. If you're looking to find a place for happy hour after work, this would be the place. They can accommodate large parties and you can pay for your own food at the front so no fuss with paying the bill.

I've been here once and that was in 2004 and never went back.  I really didn't like their fish tacos which I ordered at that time. I was expecting them to taste like the fish tacos I got in Ensenada, Baja CA.  So that's why I never went back.

So now 8 years later, yesterday, I go back with a bunch of my co-worker friends for Happy Hour.  Well I did NOT like their service.  Yes it was full but I have been to crowded bars before and only 2 people doing the drinks and their on top of it!  But here!  There was like 4 bartenders and they couldn't deal with the crowd.  I wanted two beers on tap and when I got the attention of this one bartender he was totatally rude!  He said he would be with me after he took the order of this two other girls.  So I'm there standing for 10 minutes and still no help!!  They look very disorganized and overwhelmed!  I eventually got my two glasses of Shock Rock which only took like 2 or 3 minutes to serve me!  Jeesh.  I think I'm going to come back here in another 8 years or who knows if ever!!

I would like to say that the Carnitas Nachos was delicious and also the Guac was just the right amount of spicy!

The service here NO ES BUENO!

Close to my work and a regular spot for all of us. The only thing that is good here are their alcoholic drinks and chips & guac everything else is DISGUSTING. I ordered a shrimp salad once and the shrimp tasted like mini rubber tires. Overpriced, always overpacked and smells like fish gone BAD most of the time.

Took my mother in law for early dinner last Sunday. I was excited at first at the cool atmosphere.

    Then an onslaught of disappointment.

The place was disgusting.  We couldnt find anywhere to sit.  NONE of the tables were wiped down.  We had to ask them to wipe down a table in order to find a place to sit.

We had to ask for REAL flatware.  (there was plastic by the drinks, but then we realized that all the other diners had metal flatware, that we had to ask for it.

I ordered the beet salad, and a quesedilla and empanadas for appetizers.  The others in our party ordered sopes and the fish taco sampler.

There were near to no beets in the salad.  It was mostly soggy romaine.  The quesedilla was swimming in grease.  Almost all of us had finished our entrees before my boyfriend got his fish tacos.

All the workers seemed to be lost and disorganized.

I guess this place is probably better at being a bar rather than being a sit down restaurant that you would take your mother in law to.

San Francisco expats take note. This is the best Mission-style burrito I've found in LA by far. Spanish rice? Check. Choice of pinto or black beans? Check. Pico de gallo? Check. Guacamole and sour cream? Check. Also, unlike most LA taquerias, the chicken wasn't an afterthought.

    Review for Bodega:

    Looooooovvve it.  Snap.  Snap.

Its an addiction for me.  The music is indescribable.  I took some friends, one of which was a non-dancing shy guy.  He couldn't help buy move.  Its not the type of place you want to stand still in, even if you're standing still.  There's a guy walking around playing the congas to any song on, and sometimes there's a random live performance.  Try not to shake it too hard core, you're picture might end up on a website.   True story!  :o)

Free all night.  3rd Sunday of every month during the warm months.  Delicious tacos.  And the illest crowd of people ever.

-1 star because sometimes there is a "dance crew" there that hogs up the dance floor.  more than that, they make me look bad, so they prolly give me a -1 for being a hater... oh well.

Came here last week for lunch and ordered the Fish Tacos...

The taco was good... the fish was fried nicely, but they were TOO SALTY! I tried to drown it out with the salsa, but I think the batter was too salty, which kind of ruined the dish for me. I may also be bias because I am a major fan of Taco Nazo's fish tacos.

The Fried Plantains were nice, but be prepared to share because these are really filling.

I also had a Gin and Tonic, the bartender was definitely very generous with the gin, so major brownie points there.

Overall, this was a nice place for lunch, but there is definitely some room for improvement.

Ok one star for the bartender who didn't even give me a second to put my shit down and ask about the happy hour before moving down to the bar. Fu*k off, you sod.

Four stars to the nice young lady who is a little ditzy, but helpful and all. Her drinks were terrible, in fact, all the lady bartenders were terrible. Stick to the guys and they'll make your drink tasty.

So , i came after work for happy hour and a tequila tasting here (offered by living social).  It was for four tequilas, two meztcals, and a buffet. As I'm awaiting the start of it, i wonder how theyre going to fit 600+ people and more to whom they sold these tastings to.

Ok. So the event turned out to be wonderful! I had a great time. People didn't get all crazy and the wait was long for the tastings, but the tequila sommelier (?) heheh. were explaining why their tequila was the best. I'm glad they had all three of their tequilas (for most brands) - Blanco, Reposado, and Anejo.

Disappointed only 2 mezcals. :D but some yummy smoky taste.

Had a plethora of goodies to keep me happy: t-shirt here, keychain there, necklace over there, etc. :D shots! shots! shots! all night! Also, the buffet was always full of food and people! Quesadillas, tacos, chips, guacamole, salsa.  I'll be back for food and drinks. It's a great atmosphere.

Yummy fish tacos!! AND AWESOMMME HAPPY HOUR!

Came here with co-workers after work, around 6pm for $2-$4 beer, $1 chips and salsa, and $2 fish tacos! I believe they also had margaritas for $2 blended or on the rocks.

Although the Happy Hour Menu looks a little like the one at El Torito, I must admit that the fish taco was 10 times better than the ones at El Torito. Senor Fish also had a salsa/condiments bar, so you can self-serve yourself to however much marinated onions, carrots, and hot sauce as you want, to spice things up!

With a fully stocked bar, you can also get any shot you want if your intention was to walk in work the next day with a wonderful hang-over.

I must say though, maybe because it was during happy hour, the service was a little lacking. The waitress basically took our order, brought the food, and we never saw her again. But regardless, I would still come back for cheap fish tacos!

I came here with a group of friends for their living social special which for $15 you had unlimited food and a taste of 6 different varieties of tequila.

Before arriving, I was expecting the whole situation to be a huge mess due to the high number of people who had purchased the deal. Upon arrival, it was confirmed that this would be a crowded event. However, the lines for food went decently quickly and there was rarely ever a shortage of food even with the glut of people that were getting food. I was actually pretty impressed with the speed and ability to keep the food fully stocked for most of the night since there were tons of people there.

I thought it was a cool gesture also that they included flan at the end as well and the tequila tasting was a lot of fun and a great way to mingle with locals and the tequila makers alike. Great event!

This place is great! Easy to find, its right on the corner of 1st and Alameda and right across from the JANM. What more can you ask for, they have a great ambiance, dancing, great food and a full bar! The place seems small but when I was there they opened the whole place up, they are able to divide it if they have to... by opening and closing sections of the place depending on the crowd. And I had no problem finding parking, getting to a parking space is a whole other story...

This was my first time coming here, normally I wouldn't have stopped here because it sounds too much like a fish place and I'm not a big fan of sea food, yuck I know lol! But  this year I'm giving sea food a chance to try and proove me wrong and so far I'm still right haha I don't like it lol! Ok, so anyway I came here to one of their events, Tequila tasting and all you can eat buffet of tacos. I know you wish you would have known, and trust me it was soooo good and worth it! I wouldn't be able to tell you which tacos were the best because they were all good but let's just say I loved the little crunchy tostada-tacos and there were like four different ones.

The staff were all super nice, allways greeted us with a smile and that alone makes the place a big hit on my book. I can't think of anyhting else to sharewith you about this place (maybe because of all the tequila) but that its close to so many other great places so go try it for your self and enjoy!

I had the Ensenada-style Fish taco.
The taco as a whole was good.
The stir fried fish by itself was YUMMY!!

The horchata was decent. I like my horchata a little more smooth.

Came here on a Sat night. There was a dance floor and bar area, but it was relatively dead around 1AM. Ample seating around, and relatively good spacing in the interior. My friend pointed out that all the chicks in the place were lesbians that night - I disagreed, but did notice there were a majority of them. Beyond that, the crowd was dominantly Mexican.

Drinks came fast and were made relatively strong, which I appreciated. Not sure about pricing this time since my buddy picked up the tab.

Oh yeah, the Bartender there is smokin hot.

Overall, left feeling kinda meh about this place. Would probably like it better to just have lunch or something instead of going for drinking + ??? . Ended up going back to Far Bar after leaving this place.

    Came here for lunch.

I like that they have outdoor seating.  Parking on the street wasn't too tough, but pricey on a weekday.  I ended up having 3 different tacos all of which were enjoyable, but nothing to write home to mama about (and if you're writing home to mama about killer fish tacos, that may be a different conversation altogether).  They're comparable to Rubio's, but I happen to enjoy Rubios.  In addition to a fish taco (which was my least favorite of the three), I had a scallop taco and a shrimp taco.  I liked both, mainly because of the sauce.  The reality is that the 2 tasted pretty darn similar, so the meat doesn't jump out at you.

Not as gritty as I would like my Mexican taqueria to be but the food is very good. I got the fish tacos and the problem I had was that I had more dressings and condiments than I had fish. I had to find the fish in an ocean of sauces, pico de gallo, and lettuce. Overall though was pretty good but not worth the headache parking in that neighborhood.

This location has a legit cantina that offers an extensive selection of drinks. The food is very delicious and emphasizes freshness. I ordered the 3 taco combination plate that came with guacamole, rice and beans. I chose Swordfish, Mahi-Mahi and Salmon tacos. The Swordfish was a bit dry but nonetheless tasty -- the Mahi-Mahi and Salmon were impeccable.

Overall, a great place to go for some seafood and drinks with your friends, especially when there are sport games going on.

I live in Boyle Heights and I'm required by my girlfriend to make a run for their Fish Salads.

I also noticed a killer happy hour one night when I came to pick up dinner for the fam. Being that I have two kids, I enjoyed staring longingly at all the young happy people drinking and gallivanting as I once did in my early 20s. Maybe one day when my baby-mama and my girlfriends baby-daddy are actually spending time with the kids I'll make it down. I hate you ex girlfriend! Why did you do this!?!?!

    Where was I?

Oh yeah, try the spicy sampler. Its the shizz.

I work nearby, and this is my coworker's favorite lunch spot, so we come here a lot. The food is decent, but if you're looking for great Mexican food, you can do a lot better - it's more that it's good enough for the location and the convenience.

The place gets really busy during the week during lunch, with two cash registers open and a line reaching toward the door. When this happens, the workers will try to persuade you to go to their cantina next door and order from the bar instead - they say it's the same thing! It's not exactly, though; the food is the same, but the service is different. It's quieter over there, and there's more tables open, so that's a plus. It's also waiter service at the cantina, which perhaps some guests would prefer; however, to me, this results in added headache in splitting the bill between a party of 10-15. When they try to herd our party over to the cantina, I tell the workers at the bar that I want to pay for my bill upfront.

Back to the main dining area, service is kinda spotty. We often come here in large groups, and nobody ever gets their food all at the same time. For some reason, I've had bad luck getting the salmon burger to arrive in a timely manner; sometimes it's just slow, or once they just forgot about it entirely and it had to be re-ordered. The salmon burger, however, is pretty delicious. You can get it with either fries or salad.

I also like the chicken torta and the grilled tuna torta...the piece of fish in the torta was fairly substantial in size. Tacos are super messy to eat, but I think the fish taco and the potato taco aren't bad. Beans and rice are not worth it. I thought the pastor burrito was gross and the asada burrito was nothing special. I recall also ordering the taquitos and thinking that they weren't that great, and that there seemed to be more salad stuff than anything on the plate. The fried plantains for dessert seemed like it would be fun, but it was disgusting to me... that may be a personal preference though, because I didn't like the condensed milk.

I had the red beet salad today ($5.95 lunch special), which was pretty good - it's a spinach salad with beets, avocado, red onion, and cheese, DRENCHED in dressing. With more dressing on the side. It was really too much dressing, especially when I was consciously trying to eat a healthier item. Next time, I'll order it undressed...

And I never really understand how they decide which dishes get real dishes and real silverware, and which dishes get paper plates to be eaten with plastic utensils. A beet salad, by the way, evidently comes on a real plate, but with no utensil (i.e. you gotta use the plastic forks!). It's just all a great mystery to me.

I noticed today that they removed the trash cans from the dining area - it used to be that you were supposed to bus your own plates. Since they're gone, we just had to assume that now we were supposed to leave our trash and finished dishes on the table for staff to clean up.

I don't know, maybe this should really be 2.5 stars.

Cool spot in Little Tokyo. I went on a week night and it was during happy hour, we sat in the
bar area but at a table, there is no waiter service so your on your own but the bartenders
were very polite and they would come and check on us. I ordered the taco plate with a potato
taco and a carne asada taco, the tacos were good. Of course it came with rice and beans
which were also good. I ordered my daughter a quesadilla which was huge for her but
cheesy and good, my cousin ordered the mole enchiladas, those were good also.
The place wasnt too crowded, but it was a bit on the expensive side for a taco plate, quesadilla
and a couple of beers. I think I spent about $40. I may go back but Ive had better tacos elsewhere
    for cheaper.

I'd seen this place numerous times, and while it would catch my eye, it remained ignored - until Anthony Bourdain proclaimed it as must try in the area on his 'Layover' show.

After a night of bar hoping with friends, we found ourselves wanting a midnight snack to settle the alcohol we had been consuming that evening - I finally suggested we try this place. Glad we did try it - their grilled fish tacos were tasty and kept us there for longer until last call.

We also sampled their scallop and battered/fried fish tacos, and while they were good, their grilled fish tacos took the trophy (num, num).

If you can't get to Baja for the real thing, this is a good alternative.

I've tried over and over with this place to have at least a GOOD experience.
At the restaurant, the food takes forever. I don't mind waiting for great food somewhere but to be honest, this food just isn't worth the wait. The food is only okay, seriously. Yeah, it'll fill you up and can be considered a legitimate lunch but...it's not worth it!

What really made me not want to go back was for this reason...

I ordered a quesadilla to-go. It was cheap so whatever. But it didn't come with anything else but about a handful of lettuce with a few slices of tomato and italian dressing on top. I took a bite of the lettuce and felt little grainy bits as I chewed...the lettuce...was filthy.... (I've posted a picture). I ditched the salad entirely because it was so dirty. All of it. Sadly, some of the dirt got on the quesadilla(which could have been somewhat enjoyable) ...so I couldn't even fully enjoy THAT part of the lunch.
It was very disappointing just because you'd think that if they charge so much for their food, they'd at LEAST be sure to wash the lettuce. It's careless and/or ...lazy!

I will not be ordering from this location again. They need to do something about their service and the cleanliness of the food ITSELF.

    Bummer.

If you asked me to review them five years ago, I would have given them four stars for sure. Having worked and lived nearby, Senor Fish was a weekly rotation for awhile. While I wouldn't call it authentic Mexican, they had a great tasting menu.  Between their potato tacos, fish tacos, ceviche and grilled trout dish I was always very happy. However, in the last year and a half, there has been a steady decline in both the service and the quality of food, so much that we don't even bother ever going there anymore. The last four or five times were the nail in the coffin.

If I could give an extra half star I would because when its good, its good. But most often than not, its just been disappointing (qualify of food) and service (like they just don't give a damn anymore).

Not even the revered Bourdain can revive this place for me which is too bad, because I miss having a neighborhood Mexican spot.  The cantina is weird and the pop-up restaurant is not very good. As a local resident,  I wouldn't mind seeing someone else take over this space and turn it into something more exciting.

The only reason I'm giving them 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the parking situation....totally sucks!

As far as the food, it may not be a "hole in the wall" Mexican place but it is delicious none the less.  Personally their potato tacos are to die for! Every time go to Senior Fish I order at least one not matter what else I may be ordering.

Yummers!! I can't wait to go back to this place.

Great prices and excellent portions. I loved the regular fish tacos. I've actually been craving them since the last time I was there back in December. The salsa bar is awesome, they had this one red salsa that was hot and delicious.

Oh and the calamari was great. Crunchy and very tasty.

Can't wait to go back! Oh and I was here on a Saturday afternoon so it wasn't packed, place was kinda empty. So service was quick and efficient.

I have been to this place several times before Anthony Bourdain visited.  The food is good at a fair price.  The tacos and burritos are good.  The salsa bar is nice.  Much better than La Salsa.

I don't care for the parking (pay) and they never have the caldos (hot soups).  I have not tried it for Happy Hour because it is a hike from my office and I prefer to go to places where I can walk.

It's now several hours after my dining experience. It feels like my heartburn will  slowly burn a hole in my throat or stomach. I flash back to the moment when my dearest friend recommended we go there for a lunch date. Perfect! I thought to myself. She spoke highly of the eagle rock restaurant. "What could go wrong?"

Plenty could go wrong. After paying for my parking I proceeded the restaurant. The place seemed busy enough at the tail end of the lunch rush. Lots of dirty plates and cups left a colorful debris field across the tables. My friend found a table that was relatively clean by the door. But the table was also in the path of the last of the lunch crowd. No big deal. we just talked louder than the patrons who chattered in line.

We waited in line for what seemed like 10 minutes as the lady at the counter took great pains to explain each dish to a bohemian couple wearing matching Che Guevara shirts. No big deal.

Finally ordered. Sat down and waited. And waited. And waited.

And waited. Others who had ordered food behind me got their food. It seems a recurring theme in the reviews here. After 20 minutes we got our food. Not our appetizers, out entrees. Rice, overcooked, beans, flavorless. The salad was green with a Italian dressing of dubious quality. My grill tuna overlooked, over seasoned and cold. My friends shrimp and scallop burrito (hold the beans) had beans. In a display of diners rage my friend stormed out and I sat there in a haze of dissatisfaction. I hardly touched my food. A forkful of each item was enough to curse this dump.

Then the coup de grace, the lobster tacos that were to serve as an appetizer and foundation of a lovely meal arrived. Cold flavorless clumps of deep fried meat that resembled lobster in name only. Enough.
    Ya basta!

Got my refund and left. A half hearted apology, well rehearsed and curt. The long drive back to work gave me the opportunity to reflect. I felt horrible. A tragic missed opportunity to dine with a close friend.  And then the heartburn churned up. A acid storm that I am still feeling hours after this abortion of a meal.

Maybe Senior fish dislikes law enforcement. My friend was in her uniform. I was wearing soft street cloths with my badge displayed so as to not alarm those of a more gentle disposition to my holstered sidearm. Maybe it was just a bad day. Regardless, my money shall go elsewhere. So many small Mexican sea food restaurants that take pride in their product. Sorry, this is my first and last time there.

    From a Vegetarian's perspective:

This place is okay. I've had far better and far worse Mexican food at other places. They have a tofu burrito, which is average tasting.

Pros: fast service. decent portions. decent prices. hard working staff.

Cons: average taste. Nothing unique about this place.

Just decent. I give this place a C+

Rather go to a taco truck. Takes 30 min for a freakin burrito. Worse thing is, i get the burrito and they made a totally diff burrito! No wonder this plc doesnt have good reviews! Should have not doubted the reviews.

Service is good thats about it.

My friend and I placed an order for pick up and ordered :

2 fish tacos- cold soggy fish b/c it's been fried wayyyy before we placed an order and was just stuffed in the taco. NO sauce what so ever in the taco. over stuffed with cabbage and tomatoes

2 potato tacos- the only reason why they get a star!!!! freshly fried tortillas, and flavorful potato stuffing. Also over stuffed with cabbage and tomatoes.

2 piece ensenada : soggy and super wet. The cashier told me "we know you didn't order the combo, but we made a mistake and made it a combo, but dont worry we didn't charge you for it". But I was CHARGED when I looked at it when I got home. The rice in the combo was over cooked. The bean was okay,

garlic fries- its just fries with minced garlic. The garlic is slightly cooked in butter and  poured over the fries. Its still raw to me.  And did i mention our receipt was inside this box of fries?!!!! Probably their cook accidentally dropped it in.

Overall, I am very disappointment after getting an upset stomach from the meal, :( NOT an enjoyable experience. Burping garlic all night!!!

Pretty Good! A Hot Spot during lunch hours, gets pretty packed!

I had their Fish Burrito, with no beans, and it was more than I had expected..They were a bit skimpy on the fish, but other than that it was not bad at all..

**FYI** I was misled by a review that said parking was Free..

I found that NOT TO BE TRUE, Parking is $6.50, and $3 will be given back if your parking card is validated by the restaurant.

    HORRIBLE FOOD, HORRIBLE STAFF.

I was at Senior Fish in downtown with 8 other people on my birthday. We all ordered our food at 8pm which took a VERY LONG time to get. My sister finally got her salad after 45 minutes which is ridiculous.

My boyfriend and I ordered 2 plates of the beef fajitas and when we finally got it, our rice and beans were cold and my boyfriend got 2 little strips of meat hidden under a TON of onions and peppers instead of the usual skirt steak sliced into long pieces.

Our plates looked nothing alike and we ordered the same thing. I say again...RIDICULOUS.

When my boyfriend went to complain about it, they rudely took the plate back without any apology. My boyfriend was going to ask them to add more, but no one wants to eat spit.

So he asks the woman at the cashier for his money back on account of their horrible customer service. She walks away and comes back with his change.

It being my birthday, I decided to go up to the counter and complain on behalf of my boyfriend. And all I got was a smug face, no apology, and a snide happy birthday.

I proceed to ask for the managers name and phone number and she gladly hands it over.

Someone is going to get an earful....I hope this place closes down on account of bad food and bad service.

I use to go here a lot!! and to tell you the truth I'm missing those happy hour fish tacos.. They were very good a stuffed with all the toppings. The margaritas were great too! The bar area (where I would be for happy hour) is not very big. They have a few screens to watch sports. I can't wait to go back sometime for happy hour.
