It's places like this that help to make a community vibrant. I've been reading about Self Help Graphics for quite some time and have purchased a few prints from some of the artists in the local community (Jesus Barraza and Ernesto Yerena). I visited the center on the second day of my visit to LA. I was happy to hear that we were in time for the annual print fair. What a great show!
Judging from the flyers I picked up, it looks like there are many great classes/workshops offered here too.
At one point in my life this wonderful establishment housed a variety of events that i would go to .. meet wonderful people and hear beautiful music. I still attend the annual Dia De Los Muertos event. I am sad to hear the recent news of the future of SHG, however i know that the community will find another location to move forward...
Mexica Tiahui!
Self Help Graphics just a great decision in hiring on a new director, Evonne Gallardo. She's a super knowledgeable power house. Good things to come ;)

I love this place, it's the best venue to see grassroots art that truly comes from the heart.
I am so sad that this space got sold by the Archdiocese of LA and got bought out by the guy from "Flip This House". I feel for them when they kept asking for donations, they're really hurting. Their Dia de los Muertos is epic and it gets really packed.
I'm sad that DDLM will no longer be held at this community space, and their version has historical roots dating back to the Chicana/o Movement in the 1970s.

Self-Help Graphics is a community art center nestled in the middle of Boyle Heights. It was started by a group of East LA artists in the 1970's. If you are just driving by you will miss this beautiful building composed of a ceramic mural. When visiting the gallery, Make sure you make your way to the back of the building, there, you will find a beautiful sculpture of the Virgen de Guadalupe made completely out of ceramic mosaics!
Self Help showcases work from its Printmaking Atelier Program, which invites artists to spend a week creating limited-edition silkscreen prints with a master printer. It also offers youth-based art programs lead by local artists.
They also have a great Day of the Dead celebration. From day of the dead sweet bread to sugar skull making, music, altars...the works! It's a great cultural experience.
Some of their work is displayed in the Self Help gallery and gift shop. All of their stuff is reasonably priced.

all i can say is that i like this place.
It's important for a lot of Mexica cultural events, and gets over crowded at those times. Other then that it's realatively sober while the celebrities come to visit.

They offered me this place to throw the annual Midnight Ridazz Toy ride. It was truly a community resource provided to us in order to make it happen. They really go out wihout the B.S,They offer various art classes at min cost.
