YUM.
a friend and i went a few weeks back for lunch, and were happy to find a large selection of lunch specials. we ordered the baby back ribs and filet, and were amazed by both. the ribs were well seasoned and cooked to perfection. and the filet--ohhhh the filet!
i'm a pretty fussy steak eater, and usually just expect a chewy or tough cut of meat. not the case at select cut. the steak came out perfectly, even though we ordered it medium-well, a preference that tends to ends in a charred crust and stubborn inside at other restaurants. this slab was heavenly.
and the best part of the meal was the price. for two people to have feast-like portions, drinks, and an appetizer, the total was a mere $50. suck it, capital grille!
Select Cut is a great steak house for Lincoln Park. It is not as nice as restaurants downtown but the prices are more reasonable and the food is still good. This place is a nice neighborhood restaurant.
I have had numerous fish dishes, salad and appetizers. All were good--especially the shrimp kabobs! Best thing was the price for everything. So reasonable for the amount of food you get.
My dad definitely didn't like this place because it was too dark. He had some issues reading the menu.
I'm a late bloomer what can I say? Only in the last year have I discovered a love for all things red meat and that goes for a nice, juicy steak to. I heard from a friend that Select Cuts has a great burger and e some even better steaks and since it's within walking distance of my house I figured I'd try it sooner or later. Well it was later than sooner, which I'm sure has to do with that whole late bloomer thing but either way I finally got there.
Overall my experience was pretty good. The service was a little slow and the side dishes were a little lacking but my steak was wonderful. I ordered a 8 oz fillet medium and it was nicely done. I also ordered the side of fried shrimp but they were slightly over cooked and had a little too much batter for me. Also the steak fries that came with my meal were soggy. I would have liked the choice for mashed potatoes but instead I got to choose from steak fries, a baked potato or rice. Boo! They also had an impressive wine list but no Riesling, which is what I really wanted so instead I opted for a vodka lemonade.
All and all I would go back but maybe they should think about making things ala cart and offering up some mashed tators to!
Joe and I came here for a simple celebratory dinner for the end of my semester. We always seem to celebrate with meat :)
I was definitely impressed with our cuts of meat, and enjoyed that they brought out the different cuts so that we could see the marbling in the different cuts of meat. I had the filet mignon (10 oz) and Joe had the rib eye (16 oz). They were cooked perfectly and tasted exactly like a steak should taste. The baked potato was good and so was the bread.
They get one star taken away for the following reasons:
- they don't have mashed potatoes
- although we had a reservation, they seated us in the dark bar area instead of the vibrant dining room with the exposed brick that you see on the commercials.
In the end what made this trip good was the company and the steaks. Select Cut being a steak house, these two aspects carry much more weight than atmosphere :)
A steak house that delivers? Yes that's correct. This place has a great fillet. Baked potatoes are huge. Delivery is quick and accurate. The prime rib is a pass but all other cuts have been good choice.
This small restaurant is an excellent choice for quality food without the high price.
No reservations are needed and there is no dress code (I walked in wearing jeans and was greeted warmly).
Street parking is difficult so be ready to shell out quarters galore for the pay box.
There is a bar by the entrance with a TV for you sports fans. I caught the late afternoon Broncos-Pats game while eating.
I had the ribs as an appetizer. They were tender and fell right off the bone. Recommended.
French onion soup was smooth with no after taste. Recommended.
1/2 lb cheeseburger with fries. Cheeseburger is the best in the city. Tasted fresh and was juicy. Highly recommended.
Fries were overcooked and too hard. Not recommended.
The service was very good. Family owned restaurant and it showed in a good way.
My bill was 35 bucks (there were 2 of us with 2 drinks). Great price.
I will definitely go back.
This place has perhaps the best tasting burger in the city (that's the meat between the bun). Yes, we agree with the other reviewers that the burger here needs a better bun, more cheese selections, and some cool sauces. Perhaps they could follow a trend and name the burgers after bands and songs? I'd opt for Frank Zappa songs.
We had a bottle of brut and chocolate mousse cake. We dropped some cash and had a blast. My GF who is a fan of the Kuma burger and the 1.5 hour wait surrounded by guys wasting that degree from Michigan riding single gear bikes and playing in "a band," tourists, and suburban burger seekers said (pause) "the burger itself is much better here!".
Update the bun, focus on the meat and you have the best burger in the city! Right now I rate it 4 of five because they need better bread and cheeses. But, I'd trade no wait for the bun! Well worth the trip.
Love this place. Fantastic steaks for reasonable prices. The service is also great and the owner is a really nice man. Great local establishment!
My friend suggested we go here and started off by saying that it got panned on Yelp. So I had to take a look for myself, and true enough, EVERYONE was hating on the place.
To say I went into the place under a guise of apprehension is an understatement like no other. I was terrified.
But we were quickly seated, our waitress showed off the different cuts of meat, and took our order, all within 8 minutes. The basket of bread we got was warm, fresh, and smelled AMAZING, and the wine list was well-rounded and fairly priced.
And then the steaks came out.
My friend got a porterhouse, which smelled like heaven. My fillet was perfectly done - crispy on the outside, amazing on the inside, and tasted exactly the way I'd want a fillet to be cooked. The blue cheese "crust" was not so much a crust and moreso just some melty cheese, but I'm more about the flavor of the stuff than I am about the texture.
Anyway, a good dinner at an unassuming little place, a good price, and a sweet waitress who stayed out of our hair while we gorged on steak.
Discovering Select Cut was one of our finest accomplishments while in Chicago. I was thrown off guard upon walking in, thinking that the dining room looked like nothing special. But the prices on the menu were favorable, and their website mentioned a 15% discount for people coming from Blue Man Group, which we were, so we gave it a shot.
Bottom line: Get a steak. Whoever is in charge of the grill should have their PhD in steakology. While reading the menu, you are also presented with a tray of meats, showing different cuts, as well as the specials. I am still blown away that one of the specials was a 20oz Filet! To me, the word filet signifies a thin cut of something bigger, and when you approach the 1.5lb range, it should no longer be called a filet. Perhaps call it a brick of tenderloin, because that what it is.
I went with a 15oz filet, and got the blue cheese crust baked on. This dried out the exterior of the steak a little, but the flavor that it brought to the party was phenomenal. It wasn't just a drizzle of blue cheese dressing on top of the steak, it was chunks of it patted onto the steak and baked on to a crust.
The broccoli that came with the steaks was ginormous. It was no wonder that the soup of the day was cream of broccoli, with these giant trunks of it laying around. Speaking of soups, I went with the french onion, which was also delicious.
All in all, an excellent rendition of a classic old school steak house meal. Oh, and did I mention the deliver!
My first Eek! Me thinks not ..experience as a yelper.
Select Cut Steak house - I am not a fan.
Service was laughable.
Pea pods were overcooked.
Burger ordered medium came out well done.
Homemade house dressing must have been old. Anybody ever eat something with dairy or mayo that is old and upsets the tummy.?
Yes, entire meal lost 30 minutes after i arrived home.
Better burgers..better food ..much better service in the neighborhood.
I will not go back nor will I be commenting favorably if asked my opinion,
Ugh.
The steak was well prepared. Everything else? Meh. All the sides I would have gladly donated to the homeless and the free bread made me question if that was even real bread. The service was quite slow and and the prices a bit more than I had wanted. If you're in the area and want some steak then stop by. Otherwise, try your best to venture elsewhere.
This is based on the burger, I've never set foot in this place, but they serve their food at Harrigan's next door and at Durkin's around the corner.
I had heard that the burgers had a reputation for being awesome. I finally had the burger last week, on Thursday, at Durkin's. Changed my life. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since.
This place is a rip off. tries to be like one of the big ones down town and it is far from it. My steak was overcooked and dry. Service was slow and had no clue about the wine list. If you afre going to spend a lot of $ on a steak don;t bother with this place.
I'm a little torn. I've eaten in the restaurant and it has been good, so let's say this review is for the takeout.
The best part of my order was the bread. How sucky is that?
The shrimp was really bland like, absolutely no flavor.. The cream of potato soup had a weird flavor- I asked if there was any meat stock or anything in the soup, they said no, but I think there was. Actually, I'm pretty sure
I guess we'll have to wait and see if I get violently ill. Mags can't have red meat or pork, yo!!
I'm not trying to completely knock the place. Just make sure you dine in rather than take out. Dining in is definitely worth 4 stars. Takeout is worth 2, tops.
My mom, aunt, grandma and I got a cozy steak dinner here on Sunday night. I like that it's a smaller place (not like one of the huge downtown steak houses). I had the New York Strip (came with steamed broccoli and carrots) and skinny fries. Note: you have to ask for skinny fries specifically - if you just say "fries" they'll give you thick steak fries. The bottle of cabernet was nice (don't remember which one) and the steak toppings were all deelish: black peppercorn sauce, bearnaise and grilled mushrooms. The carrot cake and tiramisu were good as well! The prices were standard and the service was friendly and attentive.
This place was a good experience. I've wanted to try this place out from seeing their commercial on TV late at night. I had the 14 oz. NY Strip, and even though it wasn't cooked the way I liked it, it was still tasty (and they had A1 sauce). The baked potato was nothing to care about (even though they had the loaded option); the steamed vegetables on the side was just bland and forgettable (broccoli and sliced carrots). The hot crusty and chewy bread in the beginning was okay, but don't spoil your appetite with that. I did enjoy my steak, and the prices here was quite okay, compared to other upscale steak places. Service was okay, but not that efficient. If you're in the mood for steak, have about $65 to drop, and just want a no-hassle quick meal, this is the place to go.
So, I had a really great burger here after a day at the beach with the girls. I love me a good, old-fashioned burger without all that fancy crap you find at "gourmet" burger joints.
That said, the atmosphere was weird. Really weird. It was stuck between casual and not. And the service could have been better. I think the staff was more worried about watching the football game than dealing with us. And I love football so I kind of understand, but come now.
My review is based solely on their Burger.
I just walked into this place the other day. The service was quick and friendly. I wasn't sure about their steaks so i decided to order the burger.
They claim that its freshly ground and i take their word for it. it didn' blow me away, it was a good big juicy. I didn't like the bun. the fries were ok too.
Wow, great steaks and cheese burgers! The actual restaurant is a little stuffy inside and is normally empty or full of 50+ crowd but the food is great! I've dined in many times since it's very close to where I live and even gotten deliveries when I'm super lazy :) Also, their french onion soup is great!
The service was... weird. We had been seated a short time- our server hadn't even brought our salads yet, and we overheard the teen aged hostess and maybe a bus boy complaining (a foot away) about how long we were taking and how they needed the table.
Our server was slow and distracted and didn't ask my salad dressing preference, instead he brought my salad covered in blue cheese dressing. I like blue cheese dressing just fine, but it certainly wasn't what I wanted.
He also made a big deal about my mother and I splitting a plate- asked four times if we knew there was a $5 split charge (we knew, it was right on the menu).
On the other hand, the steaks were fine and they were cooked just right. The wine list was approachable and not terribly overpriced and dessert was tasty.
I'm not sure I'd go back, but if I found myself at Select Cut again I'd probably opt for one of the burgers. Josh said his was fantastic.
After reading the yelp reviews, I expected this place to be kind of a dingy hole-in-the-wall with bad decor and an acceptance of people in sweatpants. But when we walked in, I was pleasantly surprised - maybe because I was expecting the worst. I found the decor to be pretty cute and wine-cellar inspired. I could see how people would feel comfortable in jeans here, but there were others who were also dressed up.
Anyway, the food was mm mm good, considering how much you pay for it. My sister and I got the filet mignon and fried shrimp combo, and I was one happy camper. My cousin got the burger, which she says is one of the best she's had, and my veggie boyfriend originally ordered the salad when the waitress said they could whip him up a terriyaki-veggie concoction for him, which he said was very good.
The service was awesome and other than the muzak in the background, we didn't really have much to complain about. Cheap food, good prices, friendly and speedy service. What more do you need?
Select Cut won't replace special outings to David Burke's and the like, but when I have a need for steak, I know I have a place that won't leave a hole in my wallet. Yay!
Woooooo baby, this place makes a damn good burger! We went on Friday night for the first time and I'm kicking myself that I haven't tried this place sooner. The staff was great. We were seated immediately and were brought out a basket of toasty warm french bread and some butter. Our server was really sweet and personable. The restaurant is pretty cozy and darkly lit, kind of romantic. The only problem I had with the restaruant itself was that we were seated maybe about 30 feet away from the women's restroom but I could still smell the air freshener that they use in there. Not exactly what you want to be smelling when you are trying to have a nice dinner.
Now onto the most important part....the food! I started with the french onion soup and my husband had the shrimp bisque. My soup was pretty good but maybe just a tad bit on the salty side. The shrimp bisque was wonderful. Creamy and had chunks of shrimp. Yum. We also ordered the sauteed mushrooms in a wine sauce. The mushrooms themselves were kind of tasteless but the juice from the mushrooms and wine made an excellent dipping sauce for our warm bread. :)
We both ordered the burgers. Mine was cooked perfectly, medium rare and with a slice of american cheese. OMG, I was in heaven. I can't even describe what was going on inside my mouth when I had the first bite but it should be illegal. The fries were also really good which was suprising because normally I don't like cottage fries but these were nice and crunchy and had just the right amount of grease. Sinful.
I was actually pretty stuffed after dinner but my husband wanted dessert so after hearing the selections he had me decide between the tiramisu and the chocolate cake. I chose the tiramisu because I'm not really a chocolate love, in fact I'm not crazy about tiramisu but out of the two that is what I picked. Let me just say the dessert was awesome. Best tiramisu I have ever had. I don't know if they make it fresh or order it from somewhere else but it was divine.
Select Cut is an indulgence that I won't be partaking in too much, a girls gotta watch her figure, but when I feel like being a bit naughty Select Cut will definitely be one of the places I will call on.
I let out a squeal of delight when I saw that this place delivered!
It's still not the same, of course as dining there...but when your beached on your couch like I was this Sunday, it was perfect!
I haven't tried the burgers as of yet, but I've always been pleased with my steaks. The rice pilaf was...well...plentiful. I would probably go with the fries or the baked potato instead.
I had an outstanding NY Strip there today for lunch/dinner - served with a delcious, fresh assortment of big carrot slices, pea pods, and brocolli - oh, dear - it was so right on the spot!
The garden salad with Blue Cheese dressing was perfect, too, if only a bit too small.
My guest had the steak burger, which also got an A+ review.
The dining room was a bit chilly, but we were there in the "in between' hours of after lunch / before dinner - perhaps that's why it felt a little cool.
Good vibe - small, intimate dining room, expert service.
Highly reccomended!
5 stars for burgers, fries, giving me all necessary condiments in a separate bag for takeout orders, and being located within a 5 minute walking distance.
Perfect for those nights when all you want to do is curl up on the couch with some xbox and junk food.
Select Cut will NOT disappoint.
I always have a good experience here. Due to the fact it IS very low-key, the service is spectacular. I think the steak is really good and their burgers are AMAZING.
Select Cut also does take-out and delivery which is good to note because a lot of bars in this area don't serve food.
I guess I should have tried the burgers, butttttttt I didn't instead I opted for the rib eye which was good, but the service sucked so bad in the beginning. very rude and abrupt with us and treated us like we couldn't speak english when he was the one struggling. Like dude, if you had a bad day or have something against us, please please please give your table to someone else. The meal was ruined by our waiter. Almost made my parents feel ashamed that they didn't speak english as well as the next person.
otherwise the steak was pretty good...nothing stellar, pretty good.
I had the taste for a really good cheeseburger. My husband saw that this place had been rated #4 in the city. Maybe if I hadn't set my expectations so high, I wouldn't have been so disappointed.
Don't get me wrong- the actual beef patty was delish. The chedder cheese was pretty good too. The bun though was bleh. While it didn't ruin the burger for me, the patty definitely deserved something better.
Deciding to blow my diet, I ordered the french fries. They, too, were also disappointing. They weren't crisp enough. Can fries be too starchy? If that is possible, I think that is wrong with the fries.
Sorry Charlie, I won't be back.
First learned about this place years ago when I ordered a steak sandwich at Durkin's. For an entire year afterwards, my friends and I would reminisce about how that "bar" had such a great steak sandwich. Of course, later, we learned that it came from Select Cut.
One of the other great things about this restaurant is that they provide quick delivery - it may sound odd to get a steak dinner delivered, but when you live alone, and are lazy, it's quite convenient.
Plus, they have Sprecher's root beer.
Select Cut is responsible for at least 10 pounds of my current overweight ass.
My friends embarked on a 15 minute stroll to try out the renowned burgers at Select Cut steakhouse.
We went on a Sunday night at 9pm, and were seated immediately (it was quite empty). It was extremely humid and muggy when we first sat down, but we asked if they could turn on the AC, and they complied!
We then proceeded to each order the 1/2 lb steak burger, ranging from medium to medium well. The burgers were delicious!! So far, the best I've had in Chicago. The meat to bun ratio was awesome.. The only minor complaint we have is that the waiter did mess up one order - by making it medium well instead of medium.. Nonetheless, the burgers were good enough, and we were hungry enough from our stroll to devour it without complaint.
What would make this place 5 stars is if the burgers were a little more flavorful - maybe more marination or seasoning would do the trick. But I'll definitely come back to try the steaks!
Although I was not crazy about the burger that seems to have rave reviews... their steaks are very good. I would take this place over the Wildfire's, Gene and Giorgetti's, etc anyday of the week.
The co-owner/host is one of the most charming restauranteurs I have encountered in this city. My boyfriend and I love going there just to see him sometimes.
Although the walls could use a little painting, this place is quick, charming and has some damn good meat.
Straight to the point: The steak burgers are really darn good (hence the 4 stars)! For a terrific burger at a really good price ($9), in a low-key, casual restaurant, Select Cut is a great option. But, for the best burger, I highly recommed the kobe burger and duck fat fries at Sweets and Savories!
As for steaks, well...refer to the paragraph above. I tried the NY Strip and in my opinion, the burgers are a far superior bang for the buck.
The service is friendly.
Bottom line: my go to place for an excellent burger on a casual night out.
For their "Best steak in Chicago" is really overstated. We went their last night, ordered two fillets medium. The waitress maybe waited about 3 minutes after we sat down to take our order. We told her medium on both of them and when they came out they were charred on the outside and completely raw on the inside. We had to send them back because they were too raw for us to eat. And when we got them back they were overdone. I wouldn't recommend this place.
The food and service was good. I'm not a fan of places that keep it dark, especially while dining. Priced like a steak house - so it's $$.
We used to love Select Cut for their steak and their service. Then our favorite waiter left soon after the best hamburger reviews came out. evidently, our server took the good steaks with him.
They seemed to have switched their focus from steak to their burgers b/c their burgers are incredible.
We've moved away from LP to GC so we have Gibson's and a dozen others instead, but it's a shame a good steak place lost it's focus.
I go to Select Cut for Burgers and Ribs.
I can't justify spending a ton of money on a steak in Select Cut's atmosphere. Not to mention the service, or lack thereof.
Their ribs are very fairly priced and is full of yummy goodness. The ribs come off the bone, and the sauce is slightly on the sweet side - just the way I like it! Comes with a huge stalk of broccoli and steamed carrots and steak fries. Can't go wrong!
Select Cut has one of my favorite restaurant burgers. If they can just work on getting some pickle chips from Murphy's in Champaign...
If you're ordering take-out and plan to pay with a credit card, get there at least 15 minutes early because it takes forever to close out your bill!
The atmosphere is bland and service sucks. And I think everything else is over-priced. I'll be back for more ribs and burgers though!
Select Cut Steak House UGH!
Well, their tiramisu was pretty decent.
Prices=High, Service=Gruff to Rude, Food=Small and Unevenly Cooked/Prepared
Went with a group tonight. The guy who served us was very gruff and rather rude. It was a large group (we had a reservation), so I kept trying to tell myself he was just "hurried".
He argued with one guy about his steak when he asked for it medium-well. Finally they agreed it would be butterflied and cooked to get the center done without the outside being charcoal. It came MOOing to the table! (I like medium-rare on occasion, this was WAY less cooked than that!!!) They'd forgotten to butterfly it, so they took it back and did that.
When we asked for butter, the waiter gruffly pointed at ONE (count it ONE on a table with 15 people) small bowl with 2 pats of butter in it!!! Finally 10 minutes later, when we asked another person, we were brought butter.
For $4.50, the dinner salad was rather small (though the blue cheese dressing was fine--expected MORE than fine when I paid $0.50 more for it--at Moody's in Edgewater you get a HUGE salad WITH your meal and for the extra cash for blue cheese you get a HUGE amount of very large crumbles in the dressing)...
My burger was supposed to be medium, but it came well done. I ate it, but didn't find it all that moist or tasty (I could've sent it back, but at that point, I was pretty much over the whole situation.) I decided to enjoy the company & just think of the food as something I have to eat to nourish myself.
The waiter, when bringing the food, actually argued with some of us that we'd ordered something that someone at the other end of the table ordered. UGH
My partner's halibut was tasty, but nowhere NEAR as big as the piece on the tray they brought out beforehand to show the "specials". He enjoyed the wine he chose.
The guy next to me was pretty over his burger, too. Said it just wasn't all that tasty. Most of our party were very happy with the desserts.
I could go on & on. Needless to say, I won't be going back.
Our experience here was AWFUL. The place openly advertises the rave reviews its burgers get, and the burgers are on the dinner menu, so my roommate and I (in need of a burger fix) sought this place out to put its steak burger to the test. Unfortunately, maybe our waiter didn't get the memo as to the fame of the steak burger, but he seemed openly disgusted by the fact we were both ordering the burger, and thereafter gave us possibly the worst service ever. And did I mention we were this waiter's only table, and later on ended up being the only people in the restaurant (it was Sunday night)? What really took the service from bad to absolutely, piss-us-off unacceptable was first, when he brought the check, we handed him our credit cards like we do at every other establishment in Chicago, and we get a snapped, "One card," response. Then, after he takes my card, he returns three minutes later with my card and a slip of paper, and says while almost throwing them on the table "Your card was rejected." Looking at the alleged rejection slip, it turned out it actually said "Comm Error" meaning THEIR machine was having a communication error - which my roommate pointed out, but he asked for a different card. Wanting to get the hell out of there because this man was seriously the most sullen, unfriendly server I have ever encountered, she handed him her card. What had to be FIFTEEN minutes later he comes back out with her card and says their machine isn't working, and hands her the old school credit card slip. We were both fuming - even my roommate who has been a waitress in the recent past. Normally fantastic tippers, his treatment led us to leave something less than we normally find acceptable.
Oh yeah -- and the burger? It was just ok. The burger itself was seasoned well and was good and all, but the bun wasn't anything to write home about. Nor was anything else about the meal - the fries were just boring, standard issue steak fries.
You can get the same type of restaurant, with actual service no matter what you order, all over the city; settling for terrible service, or hell, being disrespected like we were as customers, is just something I refuse to put up with.
The woman who WASN'T our server was nicer to us that this guy was. Just go someplace else. Seriously.
My last visit corroborated the reasoning behind awarding a fourth star. I realized in-between isn't so bad, as I enjoyed my reasonably-priced and very good but not phenomenal steak. For the steak kabob, a cup of quite good French onion soup, and a glass of single malt, my receipt says I paid $40.43 including a tip. I also realized it's the only traditional steak house in all of Lakeview and I think Lincoln Park.
