I went into See Jane Run this afternoon looking for running shoes. I really enjoy running, but I have never had good luck with shoes. My feet always end up hurting or I twist my ankle then don't run for a long time. I though, this time, I am going to by proper quality shoes.

I researched all this stuff about running shoes and supination, overpronation, etc online and I thought I had it all figured out. I almost ordered a pair off Zappos, but though of my past experience and decided to try shoes on first. I called around the Oakland area and no one had the shoes I was looking for but See Jane Run. I hopped in the car and drove over.

The sales girl was helpful as soon as I walked in the store. She had me try on quite a few pair of shoes and watched my gait in them. The ones I thought were perfect that I was going to order from Zappos were not a good match for me. But I did find a great match, thanks to the very helpful sales girl (whose name I did not get!). I even tried them out on the treadmill they have in-store to ensure good fit.

I will be breaking them in tomorrow morning around the Lake! Thank you See Jane Run!

First off, I have a really difficult time finding sports bras that fit me.  When I walked into See Jane Run and sheepishly asked if they could help me, the staff were extremely friendly and sympathetic, finding my size in several different available bras.  I found one that I liked and fit me the best, and got one.

Second example was the time that I went in solely to ask them if the running shoes that I had already gotten seemed to be fitting my feet properly (running was not feeling great).  Again, the staff were both really helpful and sympathetic and gave me all the important information that I needed (fit was fine, and it turns out my stride was what needed help!)  I will definitely go there again and recommend it to anyone and everyone!

I ended up here because my old running shoe has been discontinued (why Etonics? Why????). I suck at finding new shoes, every time I go to a specialty shop they seem perplexed by my gait. I feel like I received the friendliest and most helpful advice at this store. The staff are very knowledgeable about training safely and so helpful. I really appreciate the focus on women's bodies and specific needs as well as the feeling of community.

Also, the first pair I picked wasn't quite right, but when I brought it back, there was no hassle and they helped me take what I learned from the wrong shoe and now I have a great pair of shoes that is perfect for my training.

I want to love See Jane Run, and try to buy all my shoes there.  Yet each time I go in, I get really mediocre service and they often don't have what I need in stock.  I thought this was a one-time phenomenon, but the service issue has happened now three times in 6 months; and twice, they didn't have what I was looking for.  (here's my service issue: 1)  the salespeople don't seem to track who is first in line to be helped, so they frequently go to whomever they see first as opposed to the person who has been waiting the longest.  2) Twice, while I was paying for something, the salesperson took a phone call and instead of putting them on hold to finish my transaction, had a full conversation with the person on the phone- including going to look on the floor for merchandise they were asking for- while I sat there and waited to pay.)

So I'm a fan in concept and wish I could be a fan in experience.  They are a great business and deserve to do well.  I just wish they could do well by me.  :(

i usually only write a review when i come across a place/person i feel is extremely cool, or extremely bad.

i came across see jane run from a coupon they were giving out at the komen breast cancer race for the cure in sf and decided to check them out since i got a coupon anyway and was due for a new pair of running shoes. i agree with all those who gave this store 5 stars!

see jane run has a great selection of running shoes. from a variety of brands and models, to the sizes and colors, to even the width of the shoes!

the two people who helped me, denise and loke, were extremely friendly, helpful and knowleageble. they made me walk up and down the store a few times so that they could better judge the kind of feet i have, i.e. how severe of a pronator i am. they gave me their 100% attention and made me feel like how a customer deserves to feel! while i was endulging this great service, even my boyfriend had to tell them, "you guys are great! it's rare to see someone who is so knowleageable and truly cares about their customer!"

although i ended buying the asics kayano 15 that i had been eyeing for a while prior to going to the store, they showed me a few other shoes that they felt i may have liked or felt better in - just helpful. and although i didn't end up getting to use my $20 off coupon, i bought them for even less expenseive b/c they were already on sale! (btw, they have quite a few on sale.)

if you think you know your feet, think again! they may be able to recommend something more suitable for you.

i love my shoes and will most def go back next time i need a pair of shoes.

As I was waiting for my late friend to arrive at Zachary's, I walked past See Jane Run and realized they were open until 7pm:) Score!

I had been given a list of tennis shoes that I would need to try and purchase the best fitting one recommended by my chiropractor and I was dreading the task.  I walked in with my list of recommended brands and models and within minutes...the salesperson had all 4 types of shoes in stock along with at least 2 to 3 different colors in each shoe!

Awesome, awesome service!  I scored a pair of Asics and it's never been so easy to find a pair of tennis shoes.  Most definitely the place to get running shoes/workout shoes!

Maybe they're just a little too popular. They didn't have the right shoe in the right size, and... the girl wasn't as knowledgeable as I'd hoped.

The socks they gave me to try on shoes didn't seem very clean... Maybe they just weren't folded, but, just... the thought that they might not... ew.

Also... I guess I'm just a stickler for cleanliness (especially at a place where they sell quality, expensive shoes) but...their seats at the store are disgusting. I mean... can you like wash the seat covers of those benches along with your socks?

I'm sort of undecided at their shoe layout at the store... on the one hand they do have a lot of shoes but they're just so clumped together, would be much easier to find something and look at the tags if things were slightly more spaced out.

It's awesome that they have nearly everything you need for running in one store though! Specialized for girls!!! woohoo!

overall though, the service/advice wasn't very helpful and i didn't get the shoes i wanted. maybe it's just the woman i talked to. perhaps they have other, better, salespeople?

The sales women at this store know what they are talking about. They take time to talk to you about what you need and what you are looking for. The sales women are not full of themselves, as in another running store not too far away and adored by other Yelpers. They talk to you, not down at you. The store has a very wide selection, in contrast to another running store not too far away that carries only certain shoes approved by someone apparently very full of himself. Plus, the best part...they let me try on shoes and shop with my dog with me and even gave him treats.

In the past running stores have been intimidating places for me: private commerce clubs filled with specialty socks, anti-chafe balm and energy jelly beans for the elite runner. And added into that mix I wear a 5 to 5.5 and know that anytime I attempt to buy new shoes it will be a few stores or at least a special order, of course of the most expensive pair, before I get anything on my feet. Imagine my relief to have found See Jane Run. And I mean actual relief, I generally get this feeling that I'm holding my breath, fearful of the pretension and the running spikes. The staff at See Jan Run however is relaxed and easy to talk to, yet still knowledgeable, and (now here's the best part) I have my CHOICE of several pairs of stability shoes to choose from.

The other day I happened to come across the Noe Valley location and popped in since I had been needing a new pair. Fortunately, during my last trip to the College location they had entered the shoes that I bought in to their computer database, so I was able to walk out with an exact copy of the slightly-on-the-motion-control side stability shoe that I had so dearly loved. AND it was on sale. AAAAND they have cup size specific sports bras up to a DD if you need it. (I myself look relatively average sized, but I've got stealth boobs, you can't see 'em coming but when I run, ah yes, there they are!). Thank you See Jane Run for serving the needs of the Small Footed Big Boob-ed Amateur Runner community. You've definitely earned a mention in the SFBBAR newsletter.

This place is really impressive.  I've only recently discovered the wonders of fashionable wicking shirts.  You know - traveling, packing light, outside all day.  Normally, EMS or REI only has kinda bleh female stuff, but this place blew my mind.  Function and form.  Dang, yo.

But I went here specifically for shoes.  I needed new sandals and running shoes.  They had the basic $20 flip flops, but some really nice Merrell stuff.  Mine were $70, but actually made me say "wow, these are comfortable" outloud.  There were four people working there (maybe 3 people browsing, including me), and everyone was really friendly.  I didn't have to wait long at all for her to get my shoes, and at one point had two people getting things for me to try.  Strangely, it still took a second for someone to realize I was waiting to check out.

Best part - real athletic socks for trying on athletic shoes!  Brilliant!

I think Norman Mailer said it best, "You know, if you're just bookish, there's a tendency to get terribly bitter about people who are physical."

I'm happier swinging a pickaxe, but when I can't get my usual archaeological fix of dirty nails and heavy lifting, I run.  I used to be one of those types that turned her nose up at the runners of the world, but I defy you to find a problem that a long run in the rain won't fix.  It's become a key to maintaining sanity during grad school.  Otherwise I'm not incredibly sporty--I find the Berkeley uniform of yoga pants, Stella Mccartney trainers, and North Face vests to be sloppy, at best.

All that said, it was with great trepidation that I went to find new jogging shoes.  My last ones were beat and starting to hurt, but I dreaded shopping for new ones--surely the the clerks would be snobby and pretentious and not take me seriously because of my utter disinterest in running culture.

The manager at See Jane Run was utterly devoid of pretense and we got straight to business.  She watched me walk, then watched to see if my arches collapsed or maintained their position.  She then brought out four pairs of shoes, explained the differences in each and didn't roll her eyes too much when I complained about the sheer ugliness of the things.  Seriously, most running shoes look like a Nascar crash involving ten cars and a bandstand full of space clowns.  Why can't they make some with modern functionality that look like vintage adidas?

Anyway, I walked away with shoes that were only mildly visually offensive, but felt like I was running on taut marshmellows, yielding and springy, so much better than the stiff flap-flap of my old trainers.  And they were on sale!

You can also choose to donate your old kicks to be sent to Kenya--and while my shoes lost most of their spring, they were still in pretty good shape, so off they went.

Thank you, See Jane, for fitting me for the best ugly sneakers ever!

I got a whole lot o' Yelpin' to do.  There sure are a lotta' tales to tell y'all. I had to stop and bump 'See Jane Run Sports' to the top of my queue!

Background:
I'm doing the Nike 1/2 Marathon with Team in Training.
At kickoff  See Jane Run Sports came to analyze our feet, make footwear suggestions and give us nifty 20% off coupons

Today my pal, Irene & I were walking up & down College seeking shoes. The girls in the store remembered me from kickoff as "the girl with the suplinating feet."  This is very rare. It basically means I walk with my weight  toward  my pinkie toe instead of my big toe.

I gave them my wish list -- pink or purple nothing ugly nothing manly. They patiently listened to my tirade about why I insist upon such colors. . . in a size 11.   Do you feel their pain yet? Has your heart traveled down toward Rockridge to share your sympathies about the world of retail & demanding shoe divas? Yep, I thought so.

To make a long story medium length Irene was in a dressing room and suddenly heard cries, screaming and laughter!  They discovered found my size (turned out to be 12 in this brand) in pink (coral but why be specific) actually existed!  A few moments later, the discovered a pair in the bowels of their stockroom. Keep in mind, they were willing to special order this plus, they had already started calling around for it.

If that amazing feet were not enough they found me sports bras! Anyone beyond a DD should go and pick some sports bras. Oh, and guess what! You only have to wear one at a time instead of layer one, layer two or real bra under sports bra! But , I digress.

There was an outfit to match the shoes!  I'm serious! I'm going to be running around in coral from head to toe. And,  since the TNT coupon expired, not that I had it with me, they still gave me a discount.

How much does this rock?

I had no intention of buying anything when I came in here.
Why do I feel like all my reviews about shopping start out that way?

I walked over to this little shop to do my pre-bootcamp evaluation.  Nothing like learning my waist-to-hip-to-bust ratio taken while all these hottie tri-athlete type girls are walking around looking fit.
Why me?!

The good news?  I'm within target body fat range.  Woohooo!!!
Bad news?  I'm outta shape (like THAT's a surprise).

See Jane Run is the best neighborhood shop for us girlies.  The merchandise is all fantastic brands and they carry a really vast range of running shoes.
I ended up walking out with a super rad messenger bag (locally made) and chatted it up with the cool chicks that work the counter.
I was even mildly inspired to train with them for a triathlon...but only mildly.

This store made me feel like I DESERVE cool yoga pants by Prana because dammit they make you feel better when you're sweating your ass off.  I like that.
I plan on rewarding myself post-bootcamp with a purchase here...so you know what??

BRING THE PAIN.

Because they realize that Plus Size women work out too!  We need exercise clothing in our size--how on earth are we supposed to get fit without proper clothing!  Super selection of Cool-Max pants, tops, bras, and socks.

As others have noted, the shoe selection and staff service isn't to be beaten.  Note that the Berkeley store is the only one that carries plus size clothes.  I wish they would stock them in Noe Valley so I wouldn't have to traverse the bridge.

So I was not blessed with lovely feet. In fact, the powers that be decided it would be far more entertaining to watch me hobble around with oversized feet and pronating legs for a good portion of my life. They even like to give me plantar fasciitis and heel spurs every once in awhile to keep things interesting.

But my feet have met their match with See Jane Run. I went in there today, and no they didn't have my size (I'm a 12), but I wasn't surprised. They're getting some 12s especially for me on Wednesday from the SF store, so the outlook is good. And they found for me a lovely pair of orthotics that actually makes running relatively painless! AMAZING!

I've been in training for the SF Marathon in July for a couple of months now, but I need some buddies other than my Ipod. SJR's answer? A training club that DOESN"T require me to raise $5000! $49 for a tailored schedule and weekend runs? Fabulous!

And also props to the two girls who helped me out. I honestly had no idea who worked there when I first walked in, because they were wearing hipster clothes and looked like they were hanging out. BUT they were supersweet and helpful with my 5000 questions. Real girls do run!

EDIT 2/15/07: I take it back about their training program. Not impressed with the lack of communication. Minus two stars...booo....

These girls rock!
I am running the AIDS marathon in July and have to train for it. I felt rather like a 6th grader given a camping list. I went to the store going, ummm I used to run ages ago but I don't have any idea what I'm doing.
These very nice, very helpful, fun chicas helped me with EVERYTHING. Sports Bras, shoes, inserts, socks, water bottles, body glide, pants and even underwear. They openly and helpfully discuss pros and cons of their products and really take the time to make sure things fit and are comfortable.
Also, they have a 10 day guarantee on their running shoes. They are quite serious about making sure you get the right shoes for your feet and gait. If you are a woman, and want to get outfitted like me, or just want to buy some sports gear, you really really need to go here and nowhere else.

I really wish I could give this place more stars.  I'm just starting to get back into a running/athletic routine, so I have been somewhat apprehensive about shoes.  My feet are the bane of my existence, so I have a lot of trouble finding shoes that don't make me feel like crying every time I run a quarter mile.
While taking one of my infamous day trips to the north, I ventured into See Jane Run due to the recommendations of friends.  I was greeted by Jen, and away we went!
She was above and beyond patient with me as I asked questions and tried things on.  She never made me feel like she had other things that she needed to be doing - her attitude ensured me that my satisfaction  was her primary focus, which was quite nice!  Not only did I find my shoes, but I bought a pretty cool sports bra too.  Given how long I took to decide and how many questions I asked, Jen totally earned her pay and then some.
Would I shop there again?  Absolutely.  It's worth the road trip from Monterey Bay.

The girls that work at this store are very friendly and helpful. I felt very comfortable and at ease there the whole time, never rushed for pushed to buy. They examined how I walk and suggested the type of running shoes based on that. They explained the differences between all the running shoes I tried on, and they also had a great product selection. I was there with my good friend, who always have had trouble finding good sports bra (being larger-sized for tops and feet for her own shopping pleasure) -- and she found things that fit her very well. We both had fun there and were very please with our experience. I will definitely return.

Read my friend Joanna's review -- she's much better with her descriptions on this experience.

The Mother came home the other day with an item I have been on the hunt for since spotting it in In Style and other fashion/fitness magazines: a Sigg aluminum water bottle from Switzerland that is safe to use and economically/ecologically-friendly and socially correct. She had just returned from an eye doctor appointment and was passing time at a shop she could not remember the name of while waiting for the bus home.  We found the place the following day and I was quite chuffed.  I had heard of See Jane Run for many years, just never made it out to the place. Thanks to The Mother I now had a reason: my quest for a Sigg bottle. The Mother had purchased a yellow designed-coloured one the day before.

When I walked into See Jane Run, a black Sigg bottle with gradated shades of gray was calling my name.  Well, the little bugger was coming home with me along with a pair of light pink Crocs. And they had my size! Right on!

The Mother found a Timbuk2 bag that she liked. There was no price tag. The staff was very patient and helpful in finding the price on the website. The Mother got a good deal.

Well, I must say I found a new place to shop at for workout/yoga gear.  Nice selection of workout gear and shoes. Oh yes, shoes!  I am going to come back when I am ready to take up jogging/running more seriously.  All that analyzing the feet to find the right running shoe sounds pretty darn good to me.  And of course, more Sigg water bottles!

Love the store, owner was nice, items are fabulous, and it is bliss to have a store full of women's gear.
They also do great events & I had a good experience with their Triathalon traning team a few years back (except the schedule is kinda limited, that's why I can't do it anymore with them.) Also would be nice if the events were a little...okay, a lot more culturally diverse, But hey-that's not Jane's fault.
Parking is not great but at least there are yummy places nearby if you must walk a bit.
The only major reason I don't shop here like every week are the prices.
Reasonable retail prices, but I have often found comparable athletic gear at like Marshall's for less than half the price.
But I would recommend Jane for the essential items you do not want to go cheap on: bras and quality shoes.

This is a great place to go and get your "gear," whether you have been into sports for a while or are just getting started. It leans towards tri and running rather than cycling or team sports. They have a great selection of Moving Comfort and Champion running bras and they really know the different products, so they can give you advice on what to get based on your size and sport. they do just as good a job fitting you out with the right pair of shoes.

It's a relatively small shop, so don't expect the apparel and shoes to be available in all sizes and all colors. I could have used a little more help when I was looking for things, for once in my life I actually needed the, "Can I help you find anything?"

This store is very great for those women trying to get back into shape, its so nice to walk in and not feel overwhelmed (I include myself in this group). AND of course those who are already in shape! They really cater to women and offer a lot of programs such as boot-camps, running groups and tri groups.

As much as I love to support LOCAL Shops, I still feel this store is really pricey, so I do search elsewhere for gear, but they are very supportive and I can't help but walk in every time I walk by!!!

Caution, they don't have the best return policy, it's exchange only!!! (I had to dock off 1 star for that one!)

This store is a specialty running/other sports store just for women. It is pretty big for a specialty store. The staff is great and super cute! I spent hours in this store! If the really tall girl is there, you can get on her good side by buying her an iced coffee from spasso down the street with "this" much of soy milk and one packet of splenda.

But no, seriously. If you're a woman and wanna run and get stuff to run in, come here.

This store is fantastic. The staff is very knowledgeable about running, and all the products that go along with running, from bras to watches and everything in between.

I would encourage women runners of all levels to stop by the store. They are always willing to spend as much time as it takes to answer your questions, but they never pressure you to purchase anything.

I am a huge fan of SmartWool products after being introduced to their running socks by a See Jane staffer. My feet are so much happier and warmer now. I used to run in cotton crew socks, the kind that you buy in packs of ten at Lady Foot Locker. Never again, I tell you...

They have a Running Club program that is very reasonably priced. There are no required marathons to run or funds to raise. I joined and I'm having a great time.

I went to See Jane Run today to get new running sneakers.  The customer service representative was very helpful and knowledgeable. After watching me walk and measuring my feet, she brought out several pairs of sneakers that she thought would work for me.  Im very happy with the sneakers I bought and the customer service that I received.  I highly recommend shopping at See Jane Run!

It's cold these days and I needed to be warm. So on a whim I stopped into the store to see what I could find to warm me up. I had been wearing this hideous old fleece and it just had to go. So, when I entered, I first was looking to replace a favorite pair of yoga pants that I bought there in the summer...they didn't have them anymore but she found some very similar ones on the sale rack. She then then helped me to find a super cute cozy jacket and I picked another cozy sweatshirt/sweater kind of thing. I still needed pants. I let her know that I'm not a "runner" so I didn't want running pants and I also am not easy to fit...I am short and "curvy" ahemmmmmm ;) so I have problem with length when I get the hips to fit. She directed me to a pair of pants that seemed run a bit short and also more forgiving for us gals without the most athletic build and they were perfect! It was a good demonstration of someone listening to my concerns and knowing their merchandise well enough to make a good suggestion. Seems simple, but let's face it -not executed that often in retail. Anyway, I think they are great- and will definitely be back...and maybe I'll start running somewhere....;)

Oh, and I also got to use a $20 dollar Jane "buck" or something like that, that I was given by the new general manager (Liz was an old colleague of mine) and it was nice that it was laminated and "reusable". Nice idea!

great service!  i came here looking for some yoga/pilates equipment, and i found the salespeople to be very helpful and very friendly.  upon taking my purchase home, i realized i bought the wrong size.  i called right away and brought it right back to get another size. although the package was open, they let me exchange it, no problems.

the only reason they didn't get five stars is that see jane run is a bit pricey.  but then again, i don't need higher end/designer workout clothes (only shoes), so i can't really see myself coming here for yoga pants and shirts.  but for shoes, equipment, etc they are great.  and so knowledgeable about the products they carry.

I used to think I was the only runner with insurmountable issues: size 5.5 feet that pronate and a 34D rack.  But the nice and knowledgeable girls at See Jane Run put me back on track with gear and apparel so comfortable and stylish, I can now run 40 miles per week without a blister or bounce in sight!  They have a diverse selection of specialty shoes and functional attire, and they spend a lot of time finding your best fit: assessing your gait, sizing your feet, looking at your arch, and getting you outside in a variety of shoe types for a test drive.  Sure, this stuff is expensive, but there's always a pretty decent sales rack from which to choose.  Plus, they sponsor one of the best half-marathon events in town!

This is the first place I've been to that actually lets you try on the swim goggles before you buy them. I've most likely been shopping at the cheapest places, so SJR is refreshing. They have great sale stuff, and staff and selection are excellent. The gear is top quality. its a pleasure to shop here- I wish I could afford all the beautiful clothes. This is an excellent destination for a girls' day out shopping. They also have a very nice dog in the back room who will let you pet her forever.

I really, really like See Jane Run.  It makes me want to be a better athlete!  The employees are helpful and the selection of clothes and shoes is outta this world.  I got a great pair of Ahnu shoes that I can wear to work AND to exercise (plus, they're green!), and thought about getting a Sigg bottle.  I will definitely be back when I need more fitness attire!

Good service, great selection.  I don't know how they pack so much stuff in that store without making it look crowded.  They are pricey though.  I bought a pair of yoga pants, shoes for work, and two pairs of socks and it came to $200.  I would really love to support them because I love the idea of a fitness store just for chicks, but I don't know if I can afford to.

What more can I say? See Jane ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The tri training program is excellent. It keeps me motivated and inspired to kick ass. A big shout out to Jodi & Heather! I was in the store yesterday and bought a really nice wetsuit for the cold water in the Bay. The customer service is top notch. No complaints here. Keep up the good work!

See Jane Run is such a great resource despite the fact that I absolutely loathe running. My knees are really complaining and I have just never been into the whole running ethos. I much prefer the gym or swimming or my yoga classes. But here's the thing: the lovely women who work here are all supportive of my various athletic endeavors & are helpful across the board. I always get great, friendly service from knowledgeable people. The selection for all sorts of athletic wear is fantastic. My husband refers to this store as "See Jane Shop" because I have been known to drop some serious dough here, but it's amazing quality, a local shop, and friendly folks. It is worth a trip to this place for your athletic needs. They have terrific sunglasses, too! Highly recommended!

I love that this store caters to women.  Real women run!  There's an amazing selection of sports bras..... Literally so many that I was overwhelmed by it and couldn't even pick one!  I went there on a quest for blister powder, which they didn't have....but they directed me to a place that did have it.  They also got me to try a new supplement thingy - these fizzy tablets that you put in water to make your own electrolyte drink......  I will probably be back, but not every week.

All the staff here and the programs they run (uh, no pun intended) have a simple agenda: to get you running in whatever way is most comfortable to you.  They are all about the empowered woman beaming with confidence but not super high-maintenance about it.  And then again they have antichafing gel for the hard-core types.  Most days this place is too expensive for me, despite it being such a down-to-earth atmosphere, but they have outstanding sales, so I have made a purchase or two.  Satisfied customer.
