"Almost Walking A Straight Line" Written and Performed by Greg Haskins.
This is a great show and an unbelievable value. Greg really shines in this one-man journey through his charismatic Catholic childhood while trying not to be gay.
We just moved in to the area (okay it was 6 months ago but it feels like it just happened) and have been promising ourselves to get out and experience some of the amazing things happening in NoHo. So, Saturday night we enjoyed a bite at our favorite "pre" anything restaurant Eclectic and then headed over to the Secret Rose theatre for the play.
The theatre is kind of right across from Pit Fire and NoHo Diner and the Greyhound bus station if you need some travel arrangements while you're there. It's small but well put together. Good lights and sound and comfy seats. I love a small theatre and this one feels as intimate as any I've been to.
Greg's writing is right on (I resisted the temptation to say "write on") and as a gay man who grew up conservative Christian I can tell you that every note was spot on for authenticity. Tight, funny and sad by turns, it's a trip deep in to a slice of life and not to be missed.
Go see it before the 6-week run is over
I watched this "one-man cast" play intended for a school project, but I really wanted to watch this play just because I was interested in the story line and I love watching plays.
Well, let me tell you...
during the first ten minutes of the play, I was already annoyed at the fact Greg Haskins was very rude. I came to the play with my husband and baby; and I met some friends from school as well. Anyway, my baby had to come with us because we did not have a babysitter. During the first ten minutes, my baby started making little baby noises such as, "ooohhh" or "ahhhhh" and started getting slightly fussy due to all the loud noises. Gah, thus my husband took our daughter outside immediately, but upon exiting the theatre...
Greg Haskins had to stop his whole one-man play just to put my husband and baby on blast (on the spot); he made rude faces and facial expressions.
For goodness sake, she was barely making any noise and we (me and my husband) wanted to take her out before she was anymore of a distraction to his centered attention. He was very rude and from after the first ten minutes of the play, I was already annoyed and to be honest, I wasn't even paying that much attention to his play thus after. Don't misunderstand me, I LOVE WATCHING PLAYS. But there was no need for rudeness; I mean, people are going out to watch his play that only runs ONCE A MONTH. The theatre welcomes everyone of all ages, even babies and children... but they should really put a MEMO on Greg Haskins page online or poster to not have children or something that will take away your complete attention from him because he will be extremely rude. I understand if it was a cell phone ringing (which occurred during the play I attended) and he was putting that man on blast by staring at him straight in the eye, Haskins' eye bulged out of his sockets, and stopped everything! That's understandable, but come on now... a baby? I'll reiterate: my baby had to come due to no babysitter, and she was barely making any noise. Haskins became rude and embarassed my husband and daughter while they were exiting the theatre. I guess he forgot I was in there...
Anyway, the play itself was okay. Some funny parts--only because he did very funny imitations of people he's encountered his whole life and his feminine character. He would switch from masculine to feminine personalities like a light switch going on and off.
Short Version: Good venue for tiny theatre.
Long Version: We've all been to plays held in tiny theatre spaces. Secret Rose is one of those venues, but it is new to the neighborhood and done right. Comfortable seats, great use of the space and good equipment for putting up a show, you get a lot of bang for your buck, whether you're renting the space or going to see a show there. Now every theatre production's quality is different, so try not to judge it on that basis. As a venue itself, the theatre is a good one to see a show in an intimate setting. Check'em out.
