Review Highlights
Great little place with great tasting ice cream. As I parked my car at the top of the hill and began to walk down towards the entrance I quickly noticed this was not going to be the typical ice cream shop with picnic tables and soft serve ice cream. The outdoor patio looked amazing and so inviting on a summer evening. Small cafe style tables make it feel smaller and more personal.
The selection can be a little sparse, but there seems to be something to satisfy all seekers. We decided to get a pint of the Pavarotti and take it with us to Lake Harriet. We both thought the ice cream was delicious. I am fairly certain the dogs liked it also because they kept trying to sneak their tongues in for a lick.
I guess I've been to both the Uptown and Upton (Ave) Sebastian Joe's now, but Upton (Linden Hills) is the preferred location for me. Its solid menu of flavors (Chai and the Pavarotti are excellent options) and proximity to Lake Harriett make it a popular hangout, but for me, the spacious and quaint outdoor seating area with hanging lights along the trees is what will bring me back many nights this summer.
For me, Izzy's is still the "Queen of Dairy" in the Twin Cities, but "King Sebastian Joe II" is not too far behind... I can't believe I just wrote that... I'll hit "Post" now...
Yup, great ice cream but I do agree with Sarah P. they don't have a lot of flavors. I usually lean towards chocolate and peanut butter flavors and there were none to be had that day. I settled for oreo flavor which turned out to be quite good.
I do also love the patio and in the summer it is filled with plants and a bubbling fountain. This is a great summer spot to take a seat and enjoy some ice cream and fresh air.
Way better than the franchised Ben & Jerry's option. The coffee oreo ice cream is my favorite but you have to order it. Addicting.
My recommendation is that whatever flavor sounds the weirdest to you is the one you should try. Guarantee that you will be pleasantly surprised. Save your chocolate or vanilla order for the DQ and step out.
My son and I order the Oreo shake which has so much more Oreo than other places. Just be sure to tell them you want it thick. Some of the people will give you a watery version.
When we were kids, my sister was the athletic one and I was the one who repeatedly got a C- in gym class because I was scared of the ball and spent most of my time loitering near the wall with the other non-athletic girls, watching the boys who were trying to chase the ball and hide those pesky "gym shorts boners" at the same time.
So when it became really popular for all the little girls to sign up for the summer softball leagues, it was no surprise that she was all gung-ho for it and I wrinkled my nose in disdain at the sign-up form. Even though I wasn't playing, I didn't relish the idea of being left home alone on game nights so I generally tagged along and sat in the cheering section. The added benefit of playing the role of encouraging, older sister was that after the game, the team and their families always went out for DQ afterwards. No self-respecting 13-year-old is going to turn down the opportunity for soft serve and DQ fries....
...And that memory right there may be the only time in my life where hanging out in the ice cream shop after you've ordered the ice cream was equally as enjoyable as eating the ice cream itself. In most cases, it's been my experience that after you get the ice cream, you vacate the premises post haste and take the creamy treat elsewhere.
Aaaaaand, then there was Sebastian Joe's.
You come here for the ice cream (Steve U. is right, if you don't like it, you're *obviously* a terrorist) and stay because you can. I give the patio an A+
This is a pretty cool spot. This used to be my regular morning coffee joint in Uptown when I lived on Emerson Avenue. I've gone on a couple of dates here in the evenings, but nothing ever panned out - I blame them because it couldn't possible be a comment on my natural suaveness.
No, in reality this place has pretty good coffee drinks and good ice cream.
A few weeks back, my boyfriend and I decided to go on an adventure. AKA: We just started driving around the city - seeing new places and things and enjoying the sunny day.
During our escapade throughout the city - mostly Minneapolis - I decided that is was a perfect sunny afternoon to sit outside and eat some declicious ice cream.
Now, being from the other side of the river - I am not as familiar with all of the Mpls neighborhoods. He showed me around a lot of places I honestly had never been in my 26+ years of living in the Twin Cities.
Among our travels, he took me to Sebastian Joe's for a waffle cone of mouth watering ice cream! Yum - I'm hungry just thinking about it!
We went inside and I knew what I wanted right away. A chocolate dipped waffle cone with choc chip raspberry ice cream. Nothing better.
I honestly can't remember what kind of ice cream my other half got but I know he enjoyed it as well.
After we were rung up by the friendly staff, we sat outside in the sun at a table and enjoyed our afternoon of adventure, concluded by our cones of goodness. There is nothing better.
I encourage all of you to take an afternoon - jump in your car and just start driving. You can't believe all you will discover that you never knew exsisted in your own backyard.
What else can be said about this delectable, locally produced creamy treat? As all the reviews attest, this place kicks ass.
Only one complaint--this location doesn't have a ton of flavors (i know, sometimes it's quality not quantity, but let me be bratty)--so let's amp it up Linden Hill S.J.!
this place kicks ass. it's so clearly not good for you but in the dog days of summer, the entire 'hood's down here and we're all angling for our scoop of heat relief. creamy, creamy, sweet heat relief.
if you don't like this place, you must be a terrorist.
This place is amazing. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I had a very hard time specialty ordering products from them.
You know it's real ice cream because it will melt onto you in the summer within a matter of seconds.
My absolute favorite ice cream from them is the Mint Oreo. They make it with spearmint and not peppermint.
That vanilla malt is the best tasting icecream I've ever had...hands down. They didn't have to be so exact with the scoops (heap it on and pack that cup!), but I didn't mind in the end.
Minneapolitans, if I'm not mistaken Seb Joe's gives you a discount when it's cold. That discount only gets better as the temperatures drop. From what I've heard about the weather as of late you ought to get in and get some ice cream while the getting is good. I recommend Pavarotti or Raspberry Chocolate Chip in a decadent and homemade chocolate dipped waffle cone.
So delicious. I was eyeing the pistachio, but I chickened out at the end for the thought of having to run on the treadmill to burn off the calories was too much for me at the time so I got the blueberry frozen yogurt. Which is not to say that the next time I come back I won't get the sundae. But the frozen yogurt exceeded my expectations of frozen yogurt. It was tart and sweet and had real blueberries. Soooooooo gooood.
Out on a date around the lake? Need ice cream? No fear! Sebatian Joe's is a great spot to stop in and grab a cone. Nestled in Linden Hills - Sebastian Joe's always has a great scoop waiting.
raspberry chocolate chip = sooo good. this ice cream was amazing, the actual ice cream was raspberry flavor, not vanilla with a raspberry swirl or something like that, and the chocolate pieces in it were delectable, a rush of raspberry chocolatey goodness in every lick.
