Going to class here is like a great big dose of pure joy. I always, always leave better than I came. Not everyone might connect with the style, it's a bit of traditional philosophy mixed with imagery and a dash of the modern happiness gurus, but the instruction is consistently inspiring and safe. I have a host of injuries but I can really relax here and know I'll have a challenging class that won't hurt me. It's the only studio I've gone to that really has devotion at the heart of the practice.
Some practical info:
If you plan to drop in, bring cash or a check, this is a non-plastic establishment. The rates are standard for places in town, $15 for a drop in, $11-12 if you sign up for a 7 week session.
Check the website for dates when classes are in session, they run for 7 weeks and then have a week break. During the break there's usually some classes going on that are not usually on the schedule, but it varies, so check the website.
There are mats and props for your use, no charge
The doors open ten minutes before class. If you're waiting outside for the doors to open and there's a class inside, we're probably doing savasana and WE CAN HEAR YOU. Just be patient, we know you're out there and probably cold. Really, the doors will open.
The classes taught by some of the teachers are always full with those of us who buy a 7 week session in advance. Their website will reflect this. If you're dropping into one of these classes (where when you get there the room is a mass of chatting, stretchy folks) just wait and talk to the teacher. You'll get a spot, don't worry, but let the teacher help you do so if the room looks full.
Absolutely sweet instrucotrs. Very knowledgeable. I hav eknown the owner for so many years that's what getting older does for you....) and she has always been into movement.
Her newsletters are filled with truth, light, openness and excellent information.
They have special workshops and lovely holiday celebrations.
Namaste!
The teachers at Seattle Yoga Arts are very experienced and kind and teach in such a beautiful and welcoming space. Anusara yoga promotes alignment and opening through the heart in poses, it is a very inspiring practice and helps you feel so rooted in your body and warm to the community.
Great studio. I recommend this one right off the bat to anyone looking for a place to begin studying yoga.
Some of the best yoga instruction available in the Northwest. The classes I've been in are informal, fun, and are geared to fit the needs of all levels of students, from beginners to the most advanced. Whether you want to get in better shape, heal from an injury, or deepen your knowledge of yoga philosophy, the instructors at Seattle Yoga Arts can definitely help. Thanks for all you give to the community-
I love Seattle Yoga Arts, and really need to find my way back. I took classes under Lisa Holtby for years, and think she is just wonderful. I've never had a yoga teacher who was as sensitive to the needs of her students, or who paid as much attention to their form, constantly giving gentle corrections and suggestions. She also is terrific at describing internal motions and positions for those of us who are visual learners. What I have learned from her I've been able to apply to other sports and life in general. All of this done with a wonderful sense of humor, rare to yoga teachers!
Anusara yoga is the flavor at Seattle Yoga Arts. Choose from classes taught by several different yoga teachers, each with her own unique interpretation of yogic philosophy. If you're looking for trendy, expensive yoga, this place is not for you. If you're looking for a place to study yoga with a diverse group of open-minded men and women (of all shapes and sizes and levels of physical ability), then Seattle Yoga Arts may be just what you need. During each class, the teacher focuses on one topic that is important in the study of yoga (compassion, contentment, etc.) and works to incorporate it into your body, mind, and heart. It's one of the few places I've taken a yoga class that really balances the study among the asanas (yoga poses), pranayama (breathing), and meditation. This is where I battled seasonal affective disorder during my first Seattle rainy season, and I found it highly effective. Namaste!
