Note the new location on 36th St. in Fremont...

I'm in my first class at he Seattle Language Academy, and I'm so happy I registered! My instructor is most excellent! The new facility is great, and the staff is definitely helpful.

(It is expensive) BUT... 1 - it is totally comparable to prices for other language schools in the area, and 2 - knowing a new language is, in my humble opinion, invaluable.

    Keep SLA alive!

What a great little school.  My work gives me $200 a year for "continued education."  I, of course, must supply a good reason for receiving $200 practically free moola, so I wrote something along the lines of I need to learn Korean not only for myself but because there are very few Korean speaking employees here to assist our patients.

Classes were Monday and Wed at 7:40.  From where I live (sans car), it was really inconvenient to go home and then go to class.  I'd have to leave my place by 6:30 to get there at 7.  there was apparently not other way despite numerous attempts at the metro trip planner thing.  Class ended at 9:10, but I would arrive home at 10 or even 10:30.  Does that make sense?  no.  It was a huge pain in the ass.

All transportational bitching aside, the place is actually really easy to get to from downtown and the curriculum was really interesting.  I liked my teacher a lot, she was very very sweet and was patient, even though all 3 of us (yes, there were only 3 students in our class) were super geniuses and learned everything within 1 class.

So, apparently my pronunciation's all wonky.  Korean's got this great accent that I can't seem to master.  And it's a very sing-songy language making it even harder for me to understand.  *sigh* Maybe I'll actually have to emotionally prepare myself to go to Korea sooner than I thought.

This review is about SLA in general but also about my instructor, Roberta, in particular.

She was my professoressa for Italian 203 this summer quarter, and was spectacular--unbelievably patient, incredibly good-humored, and a master instructor of Italian as a foreign language.  Somehow, she managed to keep class (1.5 hours 2 x a week) lively and engaging, which is no mean feat considering how beautiful and distracting the Seattle summer weather was (well, mostly the first part of it).

As far as SLA goes, high marks all around.  The class size was small (approx. 10 people), which is optimal for language-learning.  Count on being called on--a lot.  This class wasn't cheap ($400 for the course, plus $95 for the text book); on the other hand, if you divide the course cost by the number of class hours (= 30 total), that works out to about $13/hour.  The experience as a whole and the quality of instructor were very, very good, so I guess it was all well worth it.

On another note, I had originally signed up for Portuguese 101, but wasn't so impressed with the instructor.  (It just goes to show you that being a native speaker doesn't ensure success as a teacher).  SLA allowed me to switch to another class with absolutely no hang-ups.

I've been taking classes at SLA since 2005. The French and Spanish instructors really impressed me with their creativity and enthusiasm! Class structure is rigorous but fun, covering cultural issues as well as a solid groundwork of grammar and vocabulary.

The great thing is that you can take classes from a beginning level all the way through to advanced. I had already maxed out of courses at other schools in the area, because there were not enough students to fill advanced classes.

I love that SLA offers a huge range of languages that Americans don't often get a chance to learn--Arabic, Mandarin, Korean, Russian. It really represents Seattle's growing cultural landscape! Travel, conversation or serious language study--whatever your interest--you will feel like a citizen of the world when you hear 10 different languages on the way to your classroom.

We are really lucky to have a place in Seattle where there is truly high quality language instruction. Valeda Furtado, the Portuguese language instructor, is awesome.

I love the Seattle Language Academy, and I'm devastated by the threat the school may be closing.  The teachers are passionate, the class sizes are small, and the other students are all engaging and fun.  The Seattle Language Academy is a great place to meet great people, and to get a break from the normal work routine.  I have been taking Spanish for 3 semesters and I have learned so much.  I had been wanting to learn Spanish for a long time, and when I went to Europe last year for the first time I decided that I better sign up.  If you have ever wanted to learn a foreign language, SIGN UP NOW!! You won't regret it!
