These guys (and gals?) are totes noisy and smelly, but I can never get enough of them. The snuggling is super cute, but the fighting and pushing one another off the piers is what makes me laugh the most.
Free the Sea Lions!
Free the Sea Lions!
Free the Sea Lions!
Why must our furry friends be subject to the abusive cameras of rotund, polyester-wearing tourists who feel a need to imitate their obvious cries of help? ...Isn't it bad enough that they have to sit next to Pier 39, that decadent bastion of useless, overpriced merchandise and what seems to pass for food? ...And do you think they like to be gawked at when they fight for their space on those wooden rafts? ...Clearly, they would rather be on a quiet beach and breeding.
Well maybe not ...Did you know that the sea lions who hang out on man-made structures are primarily male juveniles? ...And did you know that the bigger the males, the more blubber they can store and the longer they can wait for...you know, sex? ...And did you know they like to huddle close together when they're sleeping? ...Hell, they don't belong at Pier 39...I think they'd prefer being in the Castro ...Maybe we should play a little Sylvester for them ...Don't ask, don't tell!

Me and my friends always make at least one trip to see the Sea Lions. And it was always so much fun to stand there and watch them. Me and my friends would always look for the biggest ones and try to guess its weight. No matter how old you are, this is always such a fun place to be.
I used to work at the Pier, so when I had my morning shifts, I would walk by to see them. It was somewhat peaceful being the only person while watching the sea lions going about their day.
It's funny when the tourist come during the summer and ask where they've gone because the sea lions migrated during the summer and come back around the end of Aug.
One my favorite places to visit at night! I talk to them... yes I embarass whomever I'm with by barking at them. But they do talk back! The fish smell may be a bit much for some people to handle but the fact that you can stand 30 feet from them is amazing to me. We are lucky enough to have them living along our marina so take some time out to visit and watch them. They can be pretty hilarious at times.

BIG, BOLD AND HANDSOME!
NO, NOT A GOOD LOOKING HUNKY MOVIE STAR, BUT SEA LIONS!
(So . . . my idea of handsome is different than yours!)
These handsome guys (and gals!) are a natural attraction in an otherwise very commercial tourist area. On the north side of Pier 39 and behind the shops and restaurants you will find the Sea Lions.
Just follow the barking.
The Sea Lions moved into this marina after the 1989 earthquake and just took over. Boats were moved out, platforms were built. Now you can watch them frolic and wrestle and play and bask in the sun and sleep. They truly seem to love this little protected marina. And they are not in the least bothered by all the weird two-legged creatures standing around and gawking at them.
When they are here for the season - summer - you can even watch them from the Pier 39 webcam. Go to www.pier39.com When the Sea Lions are gone for the season this link takes you to static photos of the Sea Lions.
If you want to know more about the San Francisco Sea Lions visit the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito. www.marinemammalcenter... There are lots of opportunities for volunteering at the Center if you really want to learn more about these wonderful creatures that share our little corner of the world with us.
AND WE ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE THEM IN OUR BACK YARD . . . AT PIER 39!
