Just for the congee...
i am putting this place at the TOP or to-go, post-party-night congee on account of their refreshing variety! I have been ordering seafood congee everywhere in the I.D. because nothing else sounded interesting enough or came combined with enough of my favorites in one order.
Well, Sea Garden had a "Sea Garden Special Congee" that combined both my need to satisfy my seafood cravings with my desire to expand my horizons: not only did this come with my beloved thick squid steak ringlets (and these were nice and chunky) and butterflied prawns, but this variety included savory, velvety slices of pork liver and squiggly stomach and intestinal trinkets!
There is no better combination in the world. I swear to you. This IS my congee flavor from now on. No peanuts on top like at Honey Court...and they don't offer those precious Chinese donuts...but i have peanuts at home, and don't need to be eating fried dough.
My congee b4 tax and tip was $5.75....but it came in a nice big RE-USABLE plastic to-go container, NOT a Styrofoam one (no, i am not an environmentalist....i just love free Tupperware!). So that sucker is going to be in our family for the next couple decades.
Also, i appreciated the friendliness of the staff, despite the fact that it was almost 2 a.m. (when all the post-partiers stumble in to eat).
One thing about this place...it's open till 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays (and 2 a.m. M-TH), so it may seem like a great place to crash and eat after dancing/drinking/studying/working/running about all night. However, the menu is mostly seafood-focused and higher on the price scale, not offering the Hong Kong cafe-type tapas items i usually rely on ordering with my measly monetary leftovers from buying drinks all night. Have more money to spare here (unless you just do the congee thing)!
*joy
Yes, its true. Sea Garden is pricey.
But:
Sometimes you want to be seated and waited on the very second you get inside the restaurant.
Sometimes you want to be able to understand the words that are coming out of your server's mouth.
Sometimes you like receiving your food incredibly fast and piping hot.
Sometimes when you're hungry you actually do want Quality and not just Quantity.
Sometimes you want to eat in the ID at a restaurant that has decent working bathrooms, non dingy stained walls and an open dining area.
Last but not least, more often than you can admit, you want to go to a place where you know you can get all of the above after a night of boozing.
You get what you pay for.
Some recs:
- Salt and Pepper: Squid, Crab, Prawns, or Pork Chop FTW (Caveat: Bones in Pork Chop, no biggie)
- Beef and Chinese Broccoli is excellent
- Treasure Duck is succulent and not gamey at all
- Hot and Sour Soup is so good and opens up your sinuses
- Fried rice is excellent, light not greasy, not drenched in soy
- Best Honey Walnut Prawns in the ID IMHO
Holy frijoles batman! Seems like quite a few yelpers appreciate this place as a drunken hangout when every place else is closed in the wee hours of the morning. We were completely sober and this place still rocked.
Yeah, I'm definitely digging this scene. We came here because we heard the crab in black bean sauce was the way to go, but that just didn't suit us at that moment. So we ordered the salt and pepper squid appetizer, salt and pepper crab, and prawns in black bean sauce.
The squid is not the typical calamari you get anywhere else. Instead of rings and tentacles, you get strips, and instead of being coated in a thick batter, you get these light, delicate and exquisitely crisp pieces of squid that are cooked perfectly so that they are tender instead of rubbery. Fantastic.
The salt and pepper crab had the same coating and was also deep fried. They actually brought out the crab for us to look at before he became our dinner, which was kind of a neat touch being able to say goodbye to the little guy. As morbid as that may sound, I did appreciate it--hey I grew up crabbing, shrimping and fishing, so I'm not squeamish about that sort of thing.
The shrimp on the other hand was only-eh, hence the lack of one more star on my rating. Just seemed like the typical stuff you could get at a fast food joint, but at least the shrimp was nice and tender.
I like how they also provided a bowl of water with lemon (and tea?) for us to rinse our hands in afterward. The decor wasn't much to look at, but the bathrooms were clean, service was good, and we sat on display in the front window. Yeah, you know you want to go there now.
My parents came in from out of town to visit for Thanksgiving and I thought Sea Garden would be a nice place to take them. Unfortunately, we were all very disapointed with the quality & quantity of the food. The food were very expensive for the portion served. We ordered eight entree for seven people which three were kids and it wasn't enough. Their portions were only half of the amount compared to other restaurants and prices were 1/3 higher. They charged $1.50 per person for steam rice, which came out to $10.50 for a tiny bucket. How ridiculous! Then we got our check and realize a 20% gratuity was automaticaly added on to our bill.
I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone because there are many good restaurants in China town Seattle with quality food and reasonable prices.
Overpriced and not enough food...
I went with 10 of my friends. We ordered the $98 dinner special, which the server told us would be more than enough for 8 people along with 2 house special fried rice, szechuan scallops, some pork, and spicy boneless chicken. Not one person was full and food was below average. My goodness, out of 11 people, only one person actually liked the food. What really got us upset was the bill came out to be over $240 (they had charged us $1.50 per person for steamed rice EVEN THOUGH WE ORDERED TWO house special fried rice so not all of us had steamed rice) and guess what? They charged us 20% gratuity on the bill. This was my second time but I didn't know how expensive this place was because I didn't pay the first time. For the price they charged us, they could've at least provided better quantity so we could at least get full. We walked out of this stinking place and probably will not come back here again.
Tried this place tonight in the hopes of getting some good Chinese Seafood. Ordered the steamed fish which they were out of. Ordered the Geoduck which they were also out of. Does this sea food place have any seafood? Since they had a tank crawling with Dungeness crab, I went with the crab w/ ginger and scallions. It was very nice and they even provided a bowl with I think lemon and tea to wash your hands with. Their version of salt and pepper squid was okay, not quite as tasty as elsewhere in the neighborhood. I ordered pea pod greens w/ garlic but they forgot about it and had to remind them of my order. The food when it came out was good. A little pricier than some of the other joints I have been to in the I.D. Overall, not a bad experience. A reasonable option for late night eats.
I hesitate to base an entire review on a single bowl of wonton soup; but then again, a basic dish done well should be indicative of a restaurant's performance, shouldn't it?
It *was*, after all, a lovely bowl of lunch (see photo). A generous helping of noodles was topped with a fan of sweet, chewy slices of roast pork, five toothsome shrimp, pork and mushroom wontons, and a few bok choy leaves. Everything was beautifully presented, floating in a clear, tasty chicken broth.
And it was good, but it was quite overpriced. I feel a bit obnoxious complaining about a $10 meal, but if there is one consistent thing about Chinatown fare, be it in New York, San Francisco, or anywhere else, it's that you can always count on a cheap chow-down. Not so at Sea Garden.
I would give them another try, just to see if the rest of the menu holds up to its pricing.
I only go to Sea Garden when I'm craving their Duck with Vegetables. Everything else I've had here is unremarkable and since I can get better food for less $$ elsewhere in the ID it's only the craving that brings me back.
Now let me tell you about the boneless Duck with Vegetables!!! OH my GOD it's good! The perfect balance of salty and savory! The duck is super rich and the blandness of the bok choy balances it out perfectly!
I love the duck with vegetables -yum -yum and triple yum!
Everything else I've ordered here is just...whatevah.
I'm about as familiar with the Chinatown (yes, I said Chinatown, not ID) as I am with ________ (insert random topic I know nothing about). I find myself here once a month or so, but it's usually two AM. or later after a night of bar hopping or clubbing and I go to one of two places most times. I don't even know the names of where I typically go (Purple Dot?) but I was up for trying a new place after hitting up a Mariner's game.
First off, props for having a Chinese restaurant with a nice ambiance. Sure, the decor wasn't amazing, but it was warm, dark and refined compared to most Chinese restaurants in the area. Thankfully, we were ahead of the "rush" and were seated immediately.
Second impression: wow, the prices are higher here. I suppose we were paying for the ambiance and hopefully better quality food, but still, the prices were steep. The menu is pretty long and while I didn't notice very many vegetarian dishes (it's okay, two growing boys didn't want veggies anyway) there were a ton of meat and seafood dishes.
After being asked approximately 20 times in a span of 10 minutes if we were ready to order, we finally decided on the Salt and Pepper Squid, Sweet and Sour Pork and Honey Walnut Prawns. Our server asked us if we wanted rice, which I thought was an odd question, but yes, we also ordered rice. The food all came out at once and it looked tasty. The portions were average sized (maybe a little smaller than average) which kind of disappointed me since they did cost a fair amount more than what I'm used to. Thankfully, they all tasted okay. The Sweet and Sour Pork and Honey Walnut Prawns were similar to the other places. The Prawns were nice and crispy and the glaze seemed a little bit richer than what I was used to. No complaints. The Pork was average, except the sauce was really, really thick. Very stringy and gooey... sort of odd consistency, but the texture was a-okay!
The one dish that stood out the most was the squid. It came out very beige looking which slightly concerned me since I like my calamari nice and crispy (which usually means it's more golden brown) but I was nonetheless very pleased with what came out. It was crispy, despite it's color and it was perfectly seasoned. It was nice that even without crazy dipping sauces it was very tasty and I would definitely order it again.
It's really more of a 3.5 star kind of place, but I liked it overall so will round up. Service was very so-so and since they kept asking us if we were ready to order seconds after sitting down and asked us if we were done with 90% of our food still left on the plate I kind of felt rushed. Although I have to say I've never had good service at a Chinese restaurant. The food was good, the ambiance was nice and I left happy. Now if they would only drop down there prices a little bit I would have been one happy camper!
This is not a good Chinese restaurant outside of Seattle Chinatown, but it's good for within. I came with a large party of 7 people and we must've ordered the banquet for 12 people we ended up bringing about half the food home. The food was decent, though everything seemed to be covered in a thick shiny sauce (think about the amount of corn starch they must be using!).
We tried a bunch of things, but I only remember some of them. Nothing tasted truly bad, but a lot of the dishes weren't memorable either.
HITS:
- honey walnut shrimp: crispy fried shell encasing equally fresh shrimp
- mongolian beef: tasty sweet & sour flavor, tender beef
- stir-fried crab: very good sauce though messy to eat
SO-SO:
- steamed fish: though fresh, it was little overcooked and tough
- peking duck: also a little overcooked
- scallops with mixed vegetables: good ingredients, but not much taste
- bok choy with shiitake mushrooms: again, good ingredients, but not much flavor
YUCK:
- seafood soup or whatever it was: basically pure cornstarch and water
Overall, a decent option for Cantonese food in Seattle. I'm not dying to come again, but if someone suggested it, I wouldn't be adverse to it either.
A little fancier than many of the ID's offerings and a delicious discovery.
Stuck waiting outside of Jade Garden for Sunday afternoon dim sum was not in the cards one Sunday. So we looked around the and bright and stylish marque seduced us into Sea Garden.
Tablecloths, updated decor and a brilliant fish tank greeted us with the friendly staff. Sure, we were a little disappointed they didn't have dim sum, but the good vibe told us to stay.
We were not disappointed. We got a huge variety of dishes. Beef, chicken, shrimp and all of it was quite good. The quality was definitely higher than most of the restaurants I've been to in the ID. And the price reflected this as well. The eggrolls were not up to par but when you have such delicious and interesting dishes, it doesn't really matter. Overall, a great new find.
I was in search of the perfect congee. I mean, this weather begs for congee. I found Sea Garden....imperfect. It was fine, but not exciting (I realize that rice porridge lacks excitement in and of itself, but still -). I prefer a thicker congee. My boyfriend loves their duck and crab though - so this is strictly a congee review I guess.
Also I realize I can't blame the restaurant for this, but it seems to attract the loudest people on the planet. There must have been four crying children, two couples fighting, and one group of Amazon employees that seemed to think they were in a bar somewhere in Chicago.
Shut the eff up and eat, folks.
If you are looking for a good food, quiet and clean (to my standards at least) you should try Sea Garden. I've been here twice and everything is just good. It's nice to bring your family here and still have a good a conversation because again, it's not a crowded place.
Food was mediocore or slightly less than mediocore, but with 5-star price. The only thing that came anywhere close to being good was their rice - can't even remember the name of it, but it was rice with egg, shrimp, & broth over it. That was good.
Not going back if I can help it.
Best drunken find thus far......
So my friends and I stumbled upon here after a night out in belltown. Reasons why this place rocks....
1. Hello its 2am and you can get really good food.
2. Big helpings. We had 5 people in our party and we took a lot of leftovers home.
3. Friendly staff that dont try to kick you out at 3am.
I cant wait to get drunk again and go back here......
Best fried rice ever.
I am nocturnal. This means that the average Seattle eatery is of little or no use to me. Hell, when most places are shutting down for the night, I'm ready for breakfast.
Sea Garden is open late, late, late (until 2am or 3am, depending on the day of the week).
Most of the dishes that I've sampled are unexciting. However, the Spicy fried chicken is amazingly delicious. Make sure to order it boneless.
I absolutely love this place for dinner. Clean, bright, well-maintained, full of live tanks in the lobby. You immediately feel assured you'll get a fresh, well-prepared meal at the very least.
The place is very efficiently run, and the food comes out quickly. I've eaten here a couple dozen times over the last 15 years and never been disappointed. The more adventurous your palate is for seafood dishes, the better off you'll be. In fact, when I take family and order timidly, the waiters have been known to cock an eyebrow at me, wondering why I'd come to Sea Garden for mildly spiced tofu and vegetable dishes. But even those are good.
I am about to try this place again next week. I used to go fairly regularly and look forward to returning after being gone a year. Loved the seafood with black bean sauce. A friend loves the honey almond chicken, but the hole in the wall across the street (who's name I have forgotten) is actually better.
I LOVE the fact that I can count on this place to have wonderful food late night.
Haven't been to Seattle in years, but I still remember the ginger crab here. (Thank goodness for Yelp! I would've never remembered the name of this place.) Ginger crab with peking duck buns (just the buns!), congee, and chinese broccoli in oyster sauce. Afterwards, we'd go for pearl milk tea before pearl milk tea or "boba" exploded. This was a monthly ritual. I miss you, Seattle! When I visit, I will definitely have ginger crabs here.
I don't know why I keep letting people drag me back here. I loathe this place. I've heard tepid reviews from my friends, The Meat Eaters, but as a vegetarian I'm INSULTED. I think I counted 3, maybe 4 vegetarian items on the menu. No matter, it could be good, right? Well obviously the cook thinks that if you don't want meat you must not want any flavor either. Assorted vegetables? No flavor. Noodles with green onions and ginger? Flavored with soy sauce. I could have done that myself, thanks for the effort. No listed vegetable chow mein on the menu (what!) and all but a few items under the "vegetables" category had seafood/meat in them. They had plenty of tofu, but it was all served with meat.
Positives: the white rice was good!
I came here one day by not really accident but sort of. I was walking around the ID with Lydia and we were both hungry and wanted to try Maneki but it didn't open for another 30 minutes. What to do, what to do? We decided to try it yelp un-scene.
We walk in to a wall of seafood; I'm thinking maybe that's the Sea Garden? We are seated, no one else is there but it is still way early. We looked through the menu, mmm salt and pepper calamari yum, ok we're getting that but what else. Oh look under the vegetarian items this looks good, braised tofu with BBQ pork, lets get that. Everything was tasty and their chili sauce had some black bean paste in it maybe something else but what ever it was it sure made it delightful. We cleaned our plates and headed off to the show we were seeing.
Since than I've been back two more times. I love their salt and pepper calamari; I also like their honey walnut prawns and the steamed pork with the black bean sauce. Actually I've enjoyed everything I've had here so I don't think you can really go wrong unless you are a vegetarian and order the braised tofu with BBQ pork than you just might have issues.
The staff is always helpful making sure everything is ok, letting you know the steamed pork in black bean sauce will take a while because it's made fresh and steaming takes a while. When you ask if a certain dish has bell peppers or celery (two of the most disgusting food items in the whole wide world) they double check with the kitchen before answering.
If you're lucky enough to get a window seat sometimes you can get a great free show out the window, it's amazing the things you'll see late at night on a week night in the ID. And if you're really lucky you'll get to sit next to a table where mommy is taking her boyfriend out for his birthday but her daughter has made it VERY clear that she did not want mommy's boyfriend to stay the night, he WAS NOT going to be sleeping in mommy's bed, she was. I actually snorted tea out my nose while listening to this it was rather funny only because the boyfriend kept saying can we talk about this later and not here, and the little girl just went right on talking, great free show I tell you.
Go for the salt and pepper calamari and pray for a free show.
Before they remodeled the place long ago
they gave bigger portions and more tastier Singapore Fried Rice and other entrees.
After the remodel... servings have almost been half sized but I still love the food there!
A great place to eat after getting in after the airport.. great place to have lunch or dinner as a date or out with friends.
I just dread running into nights where a bunch of people just came back from the club and loud talking..
I've known the waiter that serves there since I was 4 years old.
open late. quality chinese food. tasty seafood. accommodating service
Sea Garden has been the place to go for me and my friends for years. Especially after a long (and probably drunken) night out. I have also attended and hosted a party in their upstairs room and have always had exceptional service.
However, while most people enjoy this place after the clubs die down, I have found that my favorite time to go is around 6 for an early dinner with my friends eating to our hearts content and drinking good beer and/or wine.
Must try: Salt and Pepper Squid/Prawns
Honey Walnut Prawns
Honey Garlic Porkshops (always perfect and sometimes we ask for no honey..)
Clams in a black bean sauce
and the fresh crab
I admit that the prices are a little steeper and the portions a bit smaller, but I am all about quality as opposed to quantity. Plus, I like to think the extra dollar or two is worth it since the place is always clean and nicely decorated (no oil stains on the walls...)
I was pleased... yes very pleased. I will be back to try all sorts of tasty morsels when my wallet is feeling more adventurous.
Mitzie and I went here last night and shared the Braised Tofu and BBQ Pork, and Salt and Pepper Squid. Nothing crazy exciting, but quite satisfying nonetheless. My favorite part: the chili paste... donno if there's fried garlic in it, or what they do to doctor it up, but YUM! It's not really spicy at all, so I look rather impressive when I put heaping spoonfuls all over my rice.
There were so many items on the menu... I look forward to trying more of the seafood.
This is the best Chinese restaurant I've been to in Seattle. The best thing on the menu is the crab in black bean sauce. However, if you are going to get that, be prepared to take your time and get your hands dirty.
my pants button popped off after eating at sea garden. I don't know what all the other reviewers were smoking or ordering, but the food i had was delicious. it was Mr.T's "I pity the foo who doesn't eat Sea Garden" good. I highly suggest that you order the egg smother thingy and the honey walnut sprawn, the honey glazed short ribs, and the seafood with the crispy noodles. (I don't remember the name). It was very delicious.
just thinking about it makes me drool like homer simpson does for donuts...the jelly filled donuts. so you can only imagine the amount of drool that I am accumulating on my lap.
i am rating it 4 stars because... well.. it's kinda dirty. they passed the bathroom test, but still, i get this feeling that the walls weren't cleaned in a long, long time and the water tastes like tap.
still, check it, check it, check it out. (sorry for all the early 90's references. i blame VH1)
Sea Garden is so accommodating, I love them! They're so nice too, unlike many other Chinese restaurants. I love their honey walnut prawns and basically everything else on their menu. I recommend this place for anyone craving asian food :) they'll happily fulfill it.
I'm occidental. Never been to China. However, eat out a lot and have an otherwise experienced palate.
We tried Sea Garden because we were in the mood for some comforting cantonese seafood. Score!
Black bean crab; very good! They have crab tanks and will present your crab to you before cooking so you can make fun of it and tell it how you will soon own its ass! I thought the black bean sauce could have been a little stronger with fermented black beans and about 1/4 less thickening agent, but otherwise very nicely done.
Had the salt and peppper squid. I've had this all over the country. Very good here! *Crunchy* not soggy! But not greasy. Squid tender. Not nearly enough salt. Not enough pepper, garlic. Need to up the seasonings by about 1/3. But otherwise solid and the salt was easily increased on the table and some chili oil picked up the flavor.
Had the pea leaves stir fried with garlic. Very, very nice. Some of the best I've had. Pea leaves very fresh. Very nice level of Wok-hay (the seared-iron flavor of a hot, well seasoned wok). Perfectly cooked. The thing with pea leaves in garlic is this; it almost always tastes at least pretty good when fresh out of the wok. The real test is if it tastes good once it has cooled down to room-temp. Sea Garden passes this test.
Had the sui-mai noodle soup. The Sui mai were toothsome, the wrapper aldente and not mushy, the fillings announced a nice level of white pepper. Very good. The mein were nicely cooked and very toothsome with eggy goodness. The broth flavorful, not salty...perhaps a little fattier would be better. Again, solid.
Service was much, much better than all the other Chinese places we've been to in chinatown. Pleasant, semi-professional. Plates taken away when appropriate and refills offered.
The place is well kept and it is CLEAN for chinatown, even the bathrooms! Even the carpet. Bonus points.
Overall, a very nice, solid, experience. None of the dishes blew our minds but all were solid and together they created a great meal. We'll be back!
I've gone to Sea Garden for years, it's one of the cleaner places in Chinatown. I take my friends there that want to have more authentic Cantonese food or after a nite of drinking. Beats going to Dennys. Also, it's one of the busier places in the CID, which means faster turnover and fresher food.
Hands down, the two best dishes here are the salt and pepper squid and the live crab. The squid is perfectly crunchy with the right amount of breading to it and not greasy. Second dish to get it the Crab, they'll show you the live crab out of the tank and then cook it to spec. I usually go for the ginger and green onion. Overall, it's above average Cantonese food in Seattle and fresher and cleaner than most.
BEST DRUNK CHINESE FOOD EVER!
Have you noticed that the majority of people in their mid-twenties to early thirties come here after clubbing. I've been here a million and ten times because it's the first restaurant in our minds and most trusted of all in Chinatown. The food is SO good and affordable especially with big crowds of friends ordering "family style".
The things I find not so appealing is the early AM service. They see a bunch of Filipinos walking in and we're automatically pushed upstairs when there are alot of tables downstairs. But I don't mind being upstairs at all, we just find it kind of weird, everytime we go to SeaGarden it's like those tables upstairs have a RSVP on it. We ordered, food is good and delivered fast, and they're fast giving the bill and boxing up leftovers.
But there have been a few times I've been really disappointed. There was empty dished on this little table thing and I asked the waiter for a few forks. I saw those were dirty dishes but he tries to be slick and give us a used fork but tries to pretend its clean. I didn't want to be rude and put him on blast so I just took it from him with a weird impression on my face. We just put it aside and I had to go downstairs to get clean forks. Another time I always make sure the tea cups are clean. Usually they are. But there was a time my tea cup had something crusty inside. Didn't look that clean. Even those two petty issues, I still return to Sea Garden... 2AM and DRUNK with a big gang of friends!!!!
Salt & Pepper Squid. There are a lot of good things you can order here, but do not miss the SPS.
After you have this dish once, you'll crave it for the rest of your life. Get the hot chili oil to dip the squid in. Be generous with it, that hot chili oil is packed with flavor and is not that hot. Simple, elegant, fried...its a magnificent dish -- what else is there to say?
The ginger w/ green onion noodle is a deceptively simple-looking dish. Do not be fooled by its looks (a pack of dried ramen with shiny sauce)--its really excellent.
This used to be my favorite place in Chinatown. I'd stop in late at night for a great bite before going home. Or sneak in before heading to a Sonics game. We've also had a few family dinner here, in the banquet room upstairs.
Prices are better here than the Bellevue version, and a completely different atmosphere.
I used to love the ginger and green onion chicken. They used to undercook it a bit, and it was silky and smooth. Lately, sometimes it has been overdone to my tastes. Also, I've completely hooved out on their crab.
The place gets really busy late at night, so it's best to be there early.
There was a point where my gorgeous friend C and I would frequent Sea Garden enough that i had the theme song to cheer's playing in my head everytime i stepped through the front door.
i would be norm...as long as i wasn't cliff claven. you know?
so anyhow. yes. i love sea garden. i love their hot chili oil that really isn't hot, i love their house chow mein, i love their honey garlic short ribs...but i really love their honey fried walnut prawns. i have gained i dont even know how many pounds due to my consumptions of those crunchy, sweet prawns & walnuts.
the price of sea garden's prawns is comparable to those of other chinese restaurants-and it may not be the best chinese food in the city-but, it's still a great staple to visit.
i know i always have a hankering whenever i see a rerun of cheers on tv.
Seattle is severely lacking in good chinese food (you'd need to head up to Vancouver for anything truly palatable), but Sea Garden makes a pretty valiant attempt at helping out the needy here in Puget Sound.
We usually have our Chinese New Year's dinner here because they are open late and serve up some of our favorite dishes fairly well-on choy (super fresh), steamed fish, lobster, crab. Sometimes they have ridiculous prices for the seafood so make sure you check the local markets so they don't take you for a ride.
A little on the expensive side for a Chinese restaurant. The food is decent. My problem with this restaurant is we found a large chunk of glass in one of our dishes. They didn't charge us for that dish but I think they should have been a little more generous. Also the reaction of the couple we were dining with: "They must hate us because this happened last time we came as well!"
hmmm.
my friend's family owns this place. i'm a little biased. first of all, this is one of the biggest after-the-club dining spots in Chinatown. hands down. you will find massive crowds of shimmery dress-wearing girls and platinum chain-rockin' clubbers in Seattle. being here while drunk is an interesting experience. you'll have other drunk patrons hitting on you inside AND outside this restaurant.
since being a friend of Sea Garden owner's son- you get certain privileges. VIP service (ie. rapid orders, extra care and attention, etc.) and recognition. everyone bows and smiles are from ear to ear. i love dining here when my friend is in tow. i never have to look at a menu, they know what we usually order and our group takes up 4-6 tables. they are always on-point. Sea Garden never misses a mark or a rice bowl.
The Salt & Pepper squid/calamari is signature deliciousness. Honey Walnut Prawns is a typical choice among Seattle locals- the dish is done well here. Salt & Pepper Prawns, Shrimp Fried Rice (sooo good), any Chow Fun, Wonton Noodle Soup and hot pots are key. the Fresh Crab is simply a must... be careful of biting right into the crab... use them crackers!
this restaraunt is great...love the food, service is pretty good considering it's a chinese food place...
soft egg and beef over rice is awesome and you add a little shoya (aka soy sauce) *drools* so good
ohh yeah and the sui kau noodles with beed brisket is yummy too...
i now try not to go here too late at night on club nights because my friends and i went here one night and we were sitting downstairs, a fight broke out upstairs and people were running down the stairs and almost knocked over our table...too much drama for me when i was just trying to get my grub on...
Went for a Birthday Lunch with a coworker. I'd never eaten in the ID before, so it was a nice change of pace. The place was quiet, nice and the prices weren't bad.
I had the Mongolian Beef and my coworker had the Chinese Greens with Scallops. There wasn't much in the way of Vegetarian Fare on the lunch menu, but if you dug through deeper in, I'm sure you could find something. I didn't like the fact that they didn't inform you if something was spicy or not, which can be bad for people like myself who battle Acid Reflux. And the fact that there was only one soup brought it down to 4 stars instead of 5.
Perhaps a go around for dinner one night could bring the rating up that last notch.
I'm giving this place two stars instead of one because my friends swear by it as a decent staple in the I-D and because the food I had was good BUT it also had a hair in it that I didn't see until I'd eaten half of the noodle soup. Now, I know this happens now and then, and I already said the food tasted fine until I saw the hair, but still ... hair in food. Eww. And then that other review with the chunk of glass in their dinner? And the review about the fight breaking out? Uh - I'm sure there must be better, less dangerous food in the I-D. I hope.
