I have been driving between Santa Monica and the Bay Area a lot this year and I have been trying out different places along the coast when I feel like I want to go the long route along the 1, to break up the boring highway 5 monotony. Tonight I checked into this inn, and it's very affordable and clean! The family who runs this place is very sweet, and after reading some of the older reviews here, I'm assuming the furnishings must've been updated because it doesn't look scary!  There is free wifi, a small coffee maker, a blow-dryer, all rooms over-look the ocean (although you can't really see the water because it drops off and it's probably down the cliff a bit), but it's very close to the water! I'm glad I decided to stay here. I'm giving it four stars for the budget hotel catagory. I can hear the waves!

One thing I have to add, is I loved seeing the elephant seals on the beach just north of San Simeone at one of the Vista Points... They were so cool and made the most unusal sounds, like they were filled with water. Try to see them if you can, I think they arrived from Alaska!

My husband and I have stayed here 3 different times while visiting Hearst Castle and we have been pleased each time.  On our most recent visit, we were pleasantly surprised to find new modern furniture in our room.   The place is very clean and the staff is friendly.  We paid $89 dollars a night(on a  weekday, in June) for our room with a comfortable king-size bed, and we can look out our window and see the ocean.   This place is great and I would definitely recommend it; especially to those who want a great deal for their hotel room.  There are not many places to go within walking distance, but the Mexican restaurant right down the street has great food.

Kind of scary when you first drive up... but for what you get for the money.... you sure can't beat it.  We stayed here 4 years ago... on a tight budget.  To our surprise, they had an indoor heated, salt water pool.  I think we spent more time in the pool than in our room... for good reason.  As I recall, the room could have used a whole lot of updating

Steps to the beach.... a FEW stores and restaurants close by.   There's a restaurant across the highway called.... Big Sur California Cafe or Restaurant or something like that.... have the bacon cheeseburger.  You will never have a burger as good as theirs.

It is more 2 and a half star but bumping it up.  As the first reviewer noted. The place can be a bit scary looking but the place is clean with the bathrooms being a bit newer than the bedroom is.  The stuff can be a bit dated.  It is family run and for people on a budget, a good place to consider.  Very close to a few restaurants and near Hearst Castle.
