Apologies if you've ever heard me say "Eeewww, I don't want sorbet...I want REAL ice cream!", as I've been known to bully those less recklessly indulgent than I. That was a moronic sentiment of my P.S.S. days - Pre-Scream-Sorbet, that is. I take it all back, every last dairy-free insult!

I'd read the loyalist reviews. I'd heard about the magical Pink Peppercorn, the mysteriously creamy Pistachio, and the exotic Coconut Thai Basil. You Yelpers really set expectations high, but ya know what...you didn't set them high enough. Scream cannot be adequately condoned in words; it must be admired organically, with your very own bouche.

The store itself is an adorable little space with glimmers of vintage flair - the wooden pew-like bench, the freezer camouflaged to look like furniture, the teeny tiny canisters they scoop samples from, and the rotating local art on the walls. It's amazing how they've managed to make such a small space so welcoming. Or maybe it's the daily lineup of freshly devised sorbets (the owners hit up farmers markets every week to concoct new seasonal flavors, so you'll always have an excuse to stop in).

After tasting the tart, yet inconceivably creamy, Quince Vanilla and the Almond Saffron, I settled on what would typically be my gelato order - one Pistachio, one Coffee Almond - in it's vegan form. Each creamy spoonful had me pondering how utterly painless it would be to go vegan, if I could just squirrel away enough money to feed myself some Scream every day. It's possible...

I brought home a petite sorbet sammie ($4.75) for my roommate - Pistachio sorbet between Cardamom Orange cookies - and she too marveled at the creamy, decandent, dairylicious flavor. It seems that anyone who isn't impressed with Scream's skills may need to get their mouth checked.

I had my doubts about the sorbet part b/c it's supposed to be healthier (just the word 'sorbet' sounds healthy), and even more b/c of some of their weird flavors. But it's delicious! The girl offered me a bunch of samples, I don't think there was one I didn't like. Even the lime mint was refreshing, and I'm not a mint person. I ended up settling on the madagascar vanilla, yum! I would have gotten at least another scoop (or 2) if I wasn't so full from Bakesale Betty's just a couple doors down. I definitely want to go back and try some of their other flavors.

P.s. cute store with an old school cash register.

I have been unwowed by some of their flavors in the past (Pecan bourbon, I mean how was Bulliet involved and it NOT amazing?)... but Thai peanut is literally Thai peanut sauce in SORBET FORM. This may be the greatest idea mankind has had in decades.

I want to eff it. I wish I could afford a bathtub full of it.

I've been here twice and I have had their pistachio sorbet and their guava sorbet.  Both were very tasty.  You can tell that they use real fruit in their guava sorbet,  it tastes just like th fruit itself.  I give this place 4 stars instead of 5 cause I'm an ice cream lover more than sorbet.  But I do like this place and will definitely come here when I'm in the mood for sorbet.

Scream gets an extra star for being owned and operated by cool yet passionate people.

I think Pistachio will probably always be their most popular flavor, but count me in the corner of Macademia Vanilla.

Really, sample all they have when you go. The staff are more than happy to oblige, and really respond to customer input on their mad science experiments. (They make it a point to mix new flavors pretty much weekly, depending on what they can get their hands on.)

Scream has farmers' market roots, and it shows. Their popularity has been booming without my little Yelp review, but let this be my tiny contribution to their solid word-of-mouth advertising.

My kid said it best: "the flavors taste exactly like what they're supposed to taste like!" The flavors are rich and concentrated, and I've never had a spoon here that I didn't love. Choosing just one scoop is the real challenge and though it may look tiny, it's the perfect amount. All the sorbets are vegan, but are so creamy, you'll never miss the milk.

Omg! We bought like $70 worth of sorbet last week! Couldn't resist the amazing favors.. But I'm broke right now so it's so tabu!

I love the citrus/fruit flavors. So fresh and authentic tasting... uncomparable to any store bought sorbet. The other flavors like pistachio and Peanut vanilla are unique and nice too... But tend to be more like I've cream and I'm not really an ice cream type of guy.

I love this stuff, just wish it wasn't so damn expensive. 10 BUCKS for a black label pint is a bit much... But it sure is a treat. Can't believe that they actually offer a $1000 gift card for this place.

You can't even call this sorbet.  It should be called delicious.  It is my new favorite and how is it that it can taste so fabulous with only a few ingredients and no milk, fillers and other weird stuff?  That's because they don't put any of that crap into their sorbet!!!!!  It is so natural and so tasty, Scream sorbet is amazing.  Actually, this year instead of getting a birthday cake, I got 2 tubs of Scream, 2 vegan ice cream sandwiches and a double scoop to go.  It made my birthday.  I freaking love this place, and the people who work there are so nice and let you taste whatever you want.  Tip them, they deserve it.

Still a huge fan and will rave about Scream Sorbet to anyone who is willing to listen- but I went the other night and was not feelin' their flavors. Everything was slightly off and I was just not a fan :(
But I'm going to blame all of that on mother nature and her winter fruits.

Also I hate wigs. And their art of the moment were these things with faux (or real) hair. Slightly lost my appetite :(

This place serves up some good sorbet. I had the pluot and raspberry (2 scoops for $5) and it was pretty good. The flavors were vibrant and the texture was icy. Overall, I thought the sorbet was good, but nothing I would go out of my way for. Maybe I am not a huge sorbet fan? I do love sweets, especially cold ones, so I had to try it!

Eat it. Like it. Repeat when convenient.

Scream!! That's what you feel like doing when you have a taste of what they have to offer. Their sorbets, especially the fruit based ones, taste so crisp, clean, and fresh. The flavors are spot on and it's hard to find anything wrong.

This would be definite 5 stars except for the price. It's hard to justify such small scoops for the price. You pay for the quality because I would rank the sorbets here over that of Ici in Berkeley.

Scream has ruined me for all other purveyors of frozen desserts. The other month I was in DC and I drove everyone crazy because I had to try every single flavor. But that's just normal at Scream, and really, that's the only way to make an informed decision. And it's a very important decision.

We come here all the time. We bring out of town guests, and in-town guests, and vegans and people allergic to milk. We love the seasonal fruits, pistachio, hazelnut chocolate, pluot, seascape strawberry, all of them. And OMG the sorbet sandwiches are fantastic. The only flavor I've been disappointed with was kale lemon, or something like that (it's been a few months) and my main complaint was that I couldn't taste enough kale.

Also really great is that the people who work here are always really into the sorbet. They all take turns doing all the jobs, including making it (or at least that's what one of them told me) so they're all really knowledgeable about the process. And we met the owner once too, who told us about his adventures in sorbet-making and some of the crazy flavors he's made (Tartine's morning bun sorbet!!!)  And of course we love that there's a map showing where the farms are that grow the fruit and nuts, and the rotating display of local art.

My husband and I are always amazed at the line outside Ici (in Berkeley), which is fine but not extraordinary, and the fact that most of the time we can walk into an empty store here. Cuz this place is AMAZING.

I definitely have my favorite icy treats in the area, but I've heard good things about this place. Plus I am always curious every time I walk by.

Today I was having a first time kind of day and was craving something sweet. So, Scream it was.

I got the Pistachio and Chocolate Peanut Butter.

The pistachio wasn't too sweet and maintained a fresh nuttiness to it. It was delicious.

The choco peanut butter was the best though. Super thick and creamy and had a bitter chocolate taste.

If you really like a flavor and a scoop just won't suffice, they also offer tubs of their current flavors. Just walk in and pick one up in from the freezer.

Despite my choice to try this place on a freezing cold day in winter (I had a coupon!) I was completely blown away.  Small place, and definitely gourmet to the max ($$) it was $5 for 2 tiny scoops of sorbet, but well worth it.

I definitely recommend the fruit flavored sorbets, the non fruit ones are good, but lack luster compared to ice cream.  I tried the Bartlett Pear and Feijoa sorbets, FEIJOA! Ah, possibly my favorite fruit in the world, but only grows in the tropics.  I'll try not to let the fact that they serve FEIJOA influence my review, but its hard...(I love feijoa)

Anyways, expensive, but definitely worth a try if you're in the area, I will probably go back for a pint of that feijoa sorbet...

You will not believe the texture of these sorbets. And the flavor!
The masterminds in the kitchen at Scream are truly visionaries.

I'm lucky to have been tasting their product for years- a friend of mine used to share a kitchen they worked from in Emeryville, back before they were all fancy and had their own store.

I can't tell you in words how delicious the pistachio sorbet is. It tastes like perfectly roasted, salty and sweet pistachios. I don't even LIKE pistachio nuts! But this sorbet- oh my god. Unbelievably good.

I also love that they will tell you about their SUPERFANCY1000 ice cream machine, that scrapes the sorbet down 1/millionth of an inch at a time, or something. I'm no sorbet expert. But the sorbet people will fully geek out with you about sorbet, which makes it extra tasty. Everyone knows geekery is delicious.

OH-MY-GOSH!! I think I've been hit by a bus because I SCREAM for sorbet! This place has AMAZING...literally, amazing sorbets that's all organic and homemade by wonderful people.

My friend Dan and I wanted to try this place out before heading to a concert. Something sweet and tasty that would make my mouth burst full of flavor. I'm happy that we came here!

I tried three different samples of their flavors offered at the time, since I'm sure they rotate their flavors from time to time. I've tried their peach, coconut thai basil and pistachio. I stuck to the peach and coconut thai. Those two flavors got me sold after the first bite. $5 for the double (two scoops) and $3 for a single scoop. It's a bit pricey for what's given but definitely worth a try!

Small little quaint feel and the staff are oh-so humble. Locally produced and pints of their crafted sorbets are sold at farmer's markets and whole foods....if you're lucky to find it anywhere! Potentially a nice place to drop in and try if you're in the area. I'm usually a person to explore different places, so it's a great find after my first visit! I'm coming back again....ya'll got me screaming for more!

Holy moly... If it ain't ice cream, I reckon you could slap my ass and call me Sally. There is something intrinsically unearthly about this sorbet... where is the cream? Where is the fruit?? How does it all fit and hide in one little Scream cup? Five dollars for a mouthful of sorbet? What is with the decor? (No seriously, what's with the decor?) These are questions that continue to confound me. Meanwhile, I'm very taken by the depth of color and taste in the pluot and pistachio Screams.

The thing is... after each happy encounter with a precious scoop of wholesome Screaminess, I'm all ready for some 'real' ice cream... and maybe a handful of pistachios.

.Bottom Line: So reminiscent of ice cream, it makes you crave ice cream.

After I tasted the pistachio, I literally screamed "WHOAAA!" cuz it really taste like actual pistachio.  It is pretty crazy since it doesn't seem to have any dilution to the flavors what so ever.

The other flavor I had was the coffee almond.  That was also delightful but I prefer Humphrey's vietnamese ice coffee over it.

I am glad that everyone else had such an amazing experience, but for me Scream Sorbet was not it. I am supremely glad it does not make the boy sick, due to lack of dairy content, but perhaps I am too used to dairy products because Scream did not do it for me.

Chocolate Hazelnut. Did taste a lot like hazelnut and chocolates but very chalky. After awhile it felt like I was melting down cement mixture in my mouth. Creamy but wasn't exactly smooth.

Strawberry lemonade. Fine. Good. Extremely tart, if you like sour, it is definitely for you.

Great and helpful worker let us tried many flavors.

However $3 for a small taste scoop really made me take down the amount of stars.

I have to give Scream Sorbet a three star rating. This is because all the sorbets we tried and ordered were not stiff cold, but melting ooze.  Other than the texture, the flavors were really good.

After trying the flavors offered, the winner of the night, though melty, was the melon sorbet. It tasted like a honeydew melon. Ripe and fresh. Down side was that it was soft in texture and not firm.

A great place to come after a large dinner or meal...like the one we had a few stores down!   :)

I wish I had more clear sorbet flavors here. We ordered three flavors in one dish, but they were indistinguishable. The texture and flavor concepts would have been excellent if they had a recognizable flavor, but they did not; they still tasted good through. Nice ambience in this very Oakland place.

The sorbet here literally tastes like whatever fruit/flavor it is.

The pistachio sorbet literally tastes like a pistachio/peanut. No dilution of flavor, no lightness. Literally, a pistachio!!

The peach sorbet literally tastes like you're biting into a peach in sorbet form.

The lime mint literally tastes like a mojito in sorbet form.

So why three stars? The flavors are too sweet and concentrated for my liking. I much prefer the creamy texture and light flavor of Ici's ice cream. Additionally, I found the texture of the gelato to be oozing and half-melted. Not very appetizing. I did appreciate how different it was. I've never had sorbet/ice cream/gelato that LITERALLY tasted like its original flavor!

Got to try the raspberry pear, sharalyn melon, king fruit pluot, and the peach.  The flavors were sooo good, but I settled for the raspberry pear and sharalyn melon.  The melon flavor reminded me of eating melon hi-chews.  It's kinda pricey for this sorbet $3 for a petite scoop and $5 bucks for two petite scoops.  Delicious!!!

I was looking for Tara but couldn't find her organic ice cream in the dark of Oakland. It just made me want to scream....for sorbet? Jamie W. and I were looking to satisfy our sweet teeth (...or is it sweet tooth like we have one shared bicuspid between us) after a particularly disappointing burger experience at Sparky's on Piedmont Avenue. We were drawn by the vertical neon sign and entered a very empty parlor. The very kind server allowed us to try several of the flavors, and I settled on a $5 double scoop of Peanut Vanilla and Coffee Almond (see photo).

Extremely refreshing and perfect for the lactose-intolerant since there are no eggs or dairy in it. I am the rare Asian with no problem imbibing milk by the quart, but I have to say this stuff managed to have a creamy texture regardless. Not all the flavors are hits, and the server was candid enough to tell us that the Banana Bread was nearly inedible since the bananas were not ripened. She was right. Temescal is turning into quite a gourmet ghetto, and this is a sure-fire stop for something sweet.

SORBET - 4 stars...a fine, fresh mix of flavors
AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...a bench and some vintage furniture give this place some character
    SERVICE - 4 stars...bonus points for honesty
TOTAL - 4 stars...no one can hear you scream...for sorbet!

The other day, I paid a visit to Scream Sorbet and was walking away from the store when a small spoonful of Hazelnut sorbet fell on the sidewalk.  I contemplated picking it up and eating it.

If you're looking at this page, you probably have some interest in food, Scream Sorbet, or are trying to plan out an adventure to the East Bay/51st and Telegraph/etc.  Go to this store.  It is, without question, the best and most unique dessert-related business in the Bay Area.

I know what you're probably thinking: "sorbet? how boring. . .the Bay Area has so many great ice cream shops which provide a decadent dessert worthy of my esteemed and refined palate".  OK, OK, I can relate. . .I too was in your camp, waiting in long lines around the Bay Area for pre-made Straus ice cream base with slightly-quirky flavors added to it and writing about how it's UH. MAZING on yelp.

Well, I would never say "UH. MAZING.", because I'm not an idiot with a vocabulary of three words to describe something I liked.  Anyways, then I walked into Scream for the first time and was changed forever.  All the flavors are made with locally-sourced ingredients. . .many with just three ingredients.  Half the flavors are made with nuts and/or chocolate.  They taste a lot like ice cream, but exponentially more flavorful and interesting and 'real'.  Go ahead and try the Strawberry Shortcake (if they ever fucking HAVE IT!!, ahem.) and tell me it's not the best thing you've ever eaten in your life.  The fruit-only flavors are astonishing as well. . .especially the white guava, nectarine, and date sorbets.

If you think sorbet is only to be found at ice cream stores as an overly-sweet pandering to vegans and lactose-intolerant people, or if you think frozen dessert's evolutionary chain ended the moment someone put basil into an ice cream base; well, going to Scream Sorbet will probably shatter those notions.

OMFG! You need to kick me in the balls right now to make sure this is real life. I don't know how the heck they do it but the sorbet tastes like crack. It's so flavorful and brings all sorts of memories when you have your first taste. I remember having the strawberry flavored one and it was like eating a fresh strawberry times ten!!!! It was mother%#(*% DELICIOUS!!!!! My only gripe is how much I hate that you guys are so far away from me....

The store is simple and clean. I like the oldskool register. Definitely worth a drive if you have the time. Unfortunately I don't and will end up probably just stopping by there ferry building farmers market stand whenever I'm craving there crackilicious sorbet.

I finally had the chance to visit the brick and mortar Scream Sorbet. It's pretty small like all sorbet shops. There's a peep through freezer in the middle of the store so you can get pints of ice cream or sorbet sandwiches. There are practically no tables or seats. I think there was one table with two seats.

This time I got a double of coconut chocolate and peanut vanilla. The coconut chocolate is really intense. It has a very strong dark chocolate taste along with a subtle coconut finish. I liked the peanut vanilla even more. It's like Reese's peanut butter ice cream but in sorbet mode. It's so peanut buttery. $3 for a single and $5 for a double might seem expensive for small scoops of sorbet but the intense flavors are very satisfying and filling. I was going to eat later but since it was so filling I skipped a meal.

Next time I'm in the area I'll pick up a pint.

The best sorbet in the East Bay? Most likely. The unusual yet delicious flavors like peppercorn seem to be missing. The flavors they serve are still delicious.

Fantastic!  So very, very good.  There's nothing like using a $27,000 jet engine to make supercreamy sorbet.

I highly recommend the almond pink peppercorn, the coconut basil, and the coffee almond flavors.  But every flavor is amazing.  Also so far every flavor I've seen has been vegan -- apparently Scream sometimes makes buttermilk flavors, but in the month I've been obsessively visiting there has yet to be a nonvegan sorbet.  (Yay!)

They even had a vegan ice cream sandwich the other day!  (Usually the ice cream sandwiches use nonvegan cookies.)

I spend way too much money here every month.

How the heck do they do it?!

Never in my life have I had such delicious sorbet. Each flavor has about 5 ingredients and none contain any dairy products. How do they make it so creamy and smooth?!

The employees have always been very kind and helpful every time I go in. They let me sample and always make great suggestions.  I am 100% sure that this will be one of my new regular go to spots.

Wowzer #1: the peanut vanilla sorbet, which is AMAZING. Had it a few weeks back when I was in the neighborhood.

Wowzer #2: the price for a container of the same sorbet, from Whole Foods. JESUS CHRISTO. Got over the extreme sticker shock & bought it anyway.

I hope that Tara's Organic Ice Cream  and Scream can peacefully coexist in such close proximity -- though honestly, Scream has more varieties of the v-e-g-a-n variety to offer me.

    Peanut vanilla! Get it!

Scream Sorbet is the new dessert kid on the Temescal block!

It's definitely more pricey than most ice cream/sorbet places, especially after you see the portion size!  However, each spoon-full is a flavor explosion in your mouth.  Who knew sorbet could taste so rich and delicious?!  I tried the coffee almond and it was yums!

    Very limited seating inside FYI.
