Neighborhood: MississippiI love the random mystery of Scrap. I never know what I will find, but never leave empty handed. Their inventory changes quickly.
Such an inspiration, I love SCRAP!

A crafter's bazaar.
Decadent in its dedication to reuse, SCRAP regularly throws rollicking, flamboyant fund raisers - most notably the Iron Artist.
Good clean fun.
Great place to snatch up cheap office supplies to boot.

I finally visited Scrap yesterday. I went in there with a totally different idea of what it's actually like. Scrap is a small thrift type recycled goods store with a million different kinds of "junk" to make art projects and crafts out of. I went in with a donation of about 10 yards of fabric from my sewing room...and, of course, left with fabric.
I was able to find a few yards of a chocolate brown suede like fabric as well as a gold suede like fabric on the same bolt...selling for a mere $3.
I went home and plugged in my sewing machine. I made two throw pillows for my sofa. They turned out really rich looking. Love them. My dog can not wait to drool all over those pillows!
Scrap will be one of my monthly jaunts from now on, as their inventory changes frequently.

At Scrap, you can look at a pile of assorted raw materials and imagine fantastic possibilities. Scrap is the temporary resting place for assorted materials such as linoleum floor samples, thread, paper goods, film canisters, tiles, binders, yarn, fabric, old cds, and a gazillion other nameless items that could be made into something else. Snatch up these "art supplies" for a song and get to work creating.

I love SCRAP, if you need a project to keep you busy and are short of inspiration, I assure you this can fill your head with possibilities. From linoleum floor samples to string, paper to cassette cases, and other oddities like 3' high plastic numbers, SCRAP is sure to have something to spark your imagination.

Scraps for everything
If you love junk and are very creative with it, than this is the dream place for you. This is like someone's basement storage room where they kept cool stuff that they didn't want to give away but didn't have a use for anymore. And like a storage room, stuff is everywhere with no order to it at all! That's not necessarily a bad thing, though, especially if you're someone who likes to rummage through stuff. I went with my friend who's an artist and loves to make frames with odd, little objects stuck to them. I was surprised to find some great fabric for a wall project at home.
Tip: Donate your scraps here. As they say, "One man's junk can be another man's treasure."

Low on the orginization, high on the random stuff. Its all donated, so most of it is stuff that would have been trashed anyway. YEAH for recycling!
Its pretty inspiring if you are feeling uncreative. I don't know that you could go there looking for something specific since its pretty inconsistent. Huge supply of stuff though. Stickers, frames, material scraps, carpets, pipe pieces, paper....... lots!
SCRAP -- the School and Community Reuse Action Project -- is a nonprofit organization that accepts donated craft supplies and materials for a variety of education and arts programs. Fundraisers include the store as well as the annual Iron Artist found-art team-sculpture competition.
So you have to think of the store as a sort of Goodwill for craft supplies. You never know what exactly you're going to find there, but that's no good reason not to go. And the prices are absolutely dirt cheap. (One note: I don't think the store takes plastic, so you might want to make sure you have cash, though you won't need very much.) Do expect to find whole bolts of fabric, as well as shelves full of remnants (which are organized by color), old school supplies, carpet samples, retired floppydisks from Free Geek, frames and mats, etc.
SCRAP also has several classes teaching various tecniques and projects. (Some of the cooler things I've seen include a spiral CD wallet made from old 5 1/2-inch floppies, but I'm a sucker for creative uses of 5 1/2-inch floppies.)
Need some weird, random supplies that traditional arts and crafts stores don't carry? Need some material inspiration? Then this is the place to go. Super cheap and very friendly, but don't expect organization or consistency in supplies.

I have only been to Scrap once, but I found some awesome fabric, some yarn, and a great cork board - all for about $6. What more can you ask for? A store that has cheap art supplies is always great.
