3.5 stars most accurately. My mom loves it because there are no lines and punk ass kids. So I have to secretly like it, but I appreciate the lack of crowds and you can just go in however too. The theater amenities aren't that great but good enough certainly. I think the popcorn is cheaper than the nice theaters. They do have a "crying room" for those unruly crying babies or if you're on a date and want a private viewing room.
Since there are no lines at the concession stand you can really watch the employees in their teenage drama and be totally confused. It takes me back in time. The video games are the same ones as 12 years ago when I worked there and sold my own candy for inflated movie theater prices.
THE place to go if you want to watch a movie without a bunch of punk kids talking of the celly-cell, playing practical jokes on fellow movie goers, throwing candies, or just being annoying in general.
THE place to go if you want to watch a movie without some freakaziod hippie natural fooder taking her shoes off and laying across four seats so she can align her back for optimal relaxation during the movie while her bare toes brush your elbow (EWWWWWWWWWWW- F'ing SICK).
THE place to go if you just want to watch the latest flick without having to deal with nonsense and don't need alott of fancy stuff.
They don't have reclining stadium seating, the don't have plush red-velvet carpet, and they don't have 10,000 food items to choose from, but they DO have normal patrons and decent employees, and a decent theater to watch your movie of choice.
I have been to nearly every theater in Santa Cruz and have been turned-off due to numerous situations resembling those mentioned above. I thought I was destined to watch On-Demand, or DVD's, at home forever ... that is until I came here. Nice little place to come and watch a movie without all the hype.
If you need 10,000 food items, staffers wearing matching uniforms, and a plush red carpet in order to enjoy your movie, you may need to go elsewhere.
When I came here, they'd listed the movie times wrong online, and it turned out we'd already missed the last showing of the day. Am I supposed to call the theater to check every time?
My hopes and dreams of seeing "Bridge to Terebithia" were dashed. I had to watch Zodiac, which, as it turns out, is pretty much the most boring movie I've ever seen. And it's ALL YOUR FAULT Scotts Valley Cinemas. :p
The antithesis of pretension.
I love the more artsy Nick and the Del Mar, but sometimes I just want to watch a movie in a theater the way I'd watch it at home. Enter Scotts Valley Cinemas.
I've probably watched more movies at this theater than at any one other.
I love my hometown cinema because you can roll in here looking rough with a capital R (pajamas, sweatpants, maybe you haven't showered) and just chill out and watch a movie. It's smallish, kinda old, kinda drab, tucked in the back of the Nob Hill shopping center, with a copy of the Declaration of Independence on the wall. It's suburban cozy.
Tip: Go to Nob Hill beforehand, buy a bag of booze, hide it behind the theater by the exit door, go in through the front and then retrieve it. It'll add some high-school flavored fun to your movie going experience.
Not the newest, cleanest or spiffiest of theaters by a long shot but, as Steph said below, it is THE place to go if you want to avoid the bullshit and watch a movie in peace... Fine with me.
Its actually a six screen and it has been for atleast 10 years.
Biased opinion here. I worked there for three years from the bottom to the top of the chain. I was a kid and i didn't know much about food or customer service. I had the best time working there..
However, 98% of the service that you will get at a movie theatre is going to be not SO great. its mostly kids running the joint and there is no drive to work any harder. the pay stinks and your not treated with any respect. from customers or employees.
If you ever give a theatre employee a tip you will make their WEEK! not saying that they deserve a tip for buttering your popcorn and getting it all over the side of the bag (thus you getting it all over your pants..) but its all apart of the SHOW!
this is a general rule for all theatres and all businesses serving fast food. ask about the product, does the employee even know what they are serving? and would they buy it & eat it? ask about how the machines are cleaned and evaluate the cleanliness of how they serve their food.

ask for fresh popped popcorn.. avoid the warmer (bin of popcorn.) you don't know how old it is, and neither do the employees! AND ALWAYS ASK TO SAMPLE IT FIRST! it may be too salty, or not salty enough.

this theatre i have heard got new seats & carpet. they are very vigilant with rated R movies (no one under 17 admitted!) they have 5 crying rooms out of 6 theatres! so you can bring your kids and enjoy a movie without the dirty looks. however they are not all that clean so bring some wet ones to wipe things down.. make sure you get their early so if it doesn need a mop/sweep or windex they can take care of that before the movie starts!
