A mexican breakfast place named after an ancient British druid structure? That's kind of weird.
Breakfast is good. I like how they do their eggs. The scones are always good and fresh. Sometimes I go running late at night and I see the bakers slaving away in there - working their asses off for the next morning.
The service is something to be desires at times. Doesn't seem to be a boss directing the employees. They just kind of do whatever they do. With a little staff direction this place would rock ass.
They should also change their name to "EL SCONE YO"
Came here one morning and was seated promptly. The server was nice, but besides taking our order and delivering our food we never saw him. I had myself the huevos rancheros. Personally, I've never tried the scones so I cannot comment on them. Maybe I should have since it probably is their specialty. So along with my huevos rancheros was supposed to be a side of tortillas as well as some salsa that I requested. I started eating before he brought them because I was starving and figured they would be coming out some time soon. About 3/4 of my meal was gone when he finally came, but not with anything in hand. He asked me if I still wanted the tortillas or salsa. UHMMM YAAA LIKE I NEED IT NOW??? Maybe I can take the tortillas and just throw salsa in them and eat it like that. THANKS GUY! The food was decent, but it sure could have been a lot better with those tortillas and salsa.

I usually frequent Bakesale Betty's for my scone and other baked good needs. But I was at berkeley bowl and it was just right there. Plus I have to say... I love the name! But for a name like Sconehenge I would guess scones would be the best thing on the menu. However I wasn't all too impressed with sconehenge. I've only had 2 scones here... and well... I don't think I'll go back. I mean it's edible... but it tasted as if they put far too much baking powder in their scones b/c it left this tangy bitter taste on my tounge. Very unsatisfactory! Maybe it was just a bad batch? But to be honest it kind of tasted like those muffins you get from Fresh Choice. Like I said edible... but not amazing. The girl behind the counter was kind of snobbish as well. I walked in and it wasn't busy at all save for a few people eating. I walked up to the counter and she just stared at me in a mild discontent manner. I then said "What scone do you recommend?" She then said "It's really up to you... I guess the Blueberry" I then cheerfully... in a most Mary Poppins like way said "Good I'll take two then" To see if she'd brighten up... apparently not. So that's my sconehenge experience. Maybe one day I'll give it another go. B/c apparently their English Muffins are good...

I ventured out to Sconehenge expecting something more like Lovejoy's in SF or even Fat Apples, but no, what I got was an odd mashup of Mario's La Fiesta and J's. As other reviewers have noted, this is not a doily-lined fine-china establishment, but more of a greasy spoon type joint with a menu heavily skewed towards Mexican food. I love Mexican food so this wasn't an issue for me. However, my main gripe is the small portions and high prices for mediocre food. I've often made the mistake of trying to get out to Berkeley Bowl in the morning hours to avoid the after-work crowd, but I often forget that the Bowl doesn't open until 10 a.m. on Sundays, so rather than bike all the way home, I usually just grab a bite here.
I've had hot cakes, some form of a scramble, and huevos rancheros. Everything was pretty average, but good in the sense that it came out on time. Service can be slow, even if you're sitting at the counter (!!). If you're in the area, you're better off going to Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe, Crepevine, or The Vault for brunch (in that order).
These blueberry scones are to die for. I will never again be without them. When in doubt...share a scone!

I used to Love! this place. Love! And now, meh? It just tastes really bland. But I used to Love! it so I am sticking with four stars and I hope they read this and add a little more pizazz to their recipes. If they are indeed reading this review, I used to get the Huevos Revueltos and they were AWESOME. Eggs scrambled with chillies, tomatoes and tortilla strips served with rice, beans and tortillas. And I would get them with a side of asadero cheese. Fix them please.

I dream about their english muffins. So big and fluffy and when toasty and hot...mmmm! I usually stick to their breakfast specials and haven't been disappointed yet. The mushroom scramble is my fav so far. A down side is the coffee leaves much to be desired. And it can get pretty cramped inside, but if you're looking for good food with no wait on a sunday morning (and some delicious english muffins) this is your place.

Any of their berry scones are awesome....I've got my friend hooked on the blueberry ones.
You know the yummy Sconehenge scones that you can buy at the store? Well, they are not from here! I arrived on a Saturday mid-morning, expecting a selection of fresh scones and a nice cup of tea. Instead, I found a greasy table, dirty menus and, two types of stale scones behind a counter. This is a brunch type restaurant with a mexican-oriented menu. I'm sure it's great for when you really want eggs and sausage, but I was so disappointed in the identity switch of a brand name, that I couldn't stick around to find out. Note: Stick to Peet's or your other fav cafe.

I've been going to this place for years. The food is excellent. The things I like about this place is the specials are always changing and there are also healthy choices to order like fresh fish. The portions are definitely worth the price which is very important for someone like me who loves food!

This place was disgusting. That's all I will say. If you go, don't order the Casa Breakfast. It looks and tastes like roadkill.
And by the way - they should rename the restaurant. Any semblace to an anglo scone and tea place is purely imagined...the restaurant serves a menu comprised predominantly of Mexican swill.

I am from San Francisco and a friend told me to eat here because the food was great. Even though it was a drive I am always in search of great food place. I was not disappointed. The food was amazing. Me and my friends each got a different item on the menu and I tried all of them. The Denver omellete, spinach mushroom feta omellete, bacon chedder burger, burrito, club sandwich were dee-licious. Everything is fresh made including the hot sauce which was perfect. I wanted a gallon because good hot sauce can be hard to find.
1) I enjoyed the homey chill environment as opposed to a fancy smancy place or a Denny's Diner place. Been to those way too many times.
2) You seat yourself so if you happen to find yourself at a "greasy table" or a "dirty menu" it's your OWN DAMN FAULT. Also if you did not buy anything I do not understand how you know the scones are "stale"
3) If there is not a sign in a restaurant that says "wait to be seated" what usually follows is you seat yourself. Plus there IS a sign here that says "take a menu and have a seat."
4) If you have a choice of IHOP or Denny's or any other breakfast during not breakfast definitly go here. It is worth the trip. The food quality is 100 times better and I don't feel like yaking from all of the grease puddle usually left from going to those other places.
5) ******If you have a hangover or just a had a late night get the hash browns. Will cure anything.*****
Overall the first time I ate here I was a little surprised because I am not used to eating at a Cafe of this environment but I enjoy new experiences so I was excited. This is definitly not a tourist spot but local spots are usually the best. Once again the food was AMAZING. I will definitly go back here.
THE END.

The only reason why this place doesn't get 5 stars is due to the lack of cafe skills. I kind of feel as though if u are going to call ur self a 'cafe' u better know how to make some bomb ass coffee.
But in happier news their food is on hit! If u love an authentic Mexican breakfast this is your spot. I mean a plate of Huevos Rancheros that was jaw dropping. Now I completely forgot that the eggs are traditionally a bit runny in this dish... but shit i didn't care! It was so good I didn't even care.
They also have a feta spinach and mushroom omelet that was bomb. There isn't much that I can say about this place thats bad except the coffee. I mean event the salsa was great AND the OJ was good!
shit i could go for some right now!

Britt says to me, "They must have put crack in these huevos rancheros." She was so right because DAMN they were delicious. I just ate an amazing plate of beans, rice, huevos rancheros, and warm tortillas and you have every right to be jealous of me.
Britt had an omelet with feta, mushrooms, and spinach. It was good, but did not hold a candle to my crack...I mean meal. The orange juice was also notably good, but the coffee not so much. We need something a little stronger.
The portions are also huge, so my breakfast is also going to be my lunch. Don't get the coffee and you AND your Britt can have all of this for around $20. Oh yeah, life is good.

K...five stars for the amazing chocolate chip cookie and oatmeal cookie I bought at Rainbow this weekend....It made my walk back to the Mission that much more enjoyable...
On that note...four stars for the scone pack (currant) I bought and later popped in my oven and slathered with clotted cream. I bet right out of the oven they are transcendent, but upon re-heating they lost a little something. However I'm not really bitching b/c anything coated in double cream is fine by me.
When I move to SF I will definitely hit up Rainbow for a cookie fix until I find something better (looks like I will be on a cookie hunt soon!). Or if I actually get myself on a BART to Berkeley I will stop by the storefront.

I like this place. It is what every mom and pop breakfast joint ought to be. I recommend ordering one of the specials. They really do change all the time, so you get food that is in season and fresh.
It's always busy on the weekends, but in a refreshing sort of way. I have never had to wait an indecent amt of time to get seated, and they the tables are pleasantly close so that one feels as if they are in the mix of the community.

I come here at least once a week in the mornings for the carrot zucchini muffin, which tastes deliciously homemade. But the real treat is on the weekends, when we come to sit and enjoy the best blueberry pancakes to be found anywhere in the bay area...or the universe for that matter!
No place I can think of even comes close to matching the light, buttery, sweet delectability of this enduring breakfast dish. The blueberries seem fresh, not like that syrupy purple mess you usually see piled on top of pancakes at certain restaurant chains who shall remain nameless! I don't know what they put in that batter, but whatever it is, it keeps us coming back for more!
In fact, we have a visitor from the east coast who, since recently eating them, declared that they were the BEST pancakes he's EVER had...and he's eaten a LOT of pancakes!
(Note: the breakfast items on the menu are a bit on the pricey side, but the pancakes are totally worth it.)

After reading the great reviews on Yelp, me and Megan decided to try this out for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Expecting good things (particularly the scones), we set out in search of something tasty...
We found a very rushed, unfriendly, environment with passable omelets and one disappointing scone. Upon arrival, we did a quick check with guy who looked like he was doing server & hosting duties, and he told us to grab some menus from near the door and take a seat. No problem. We like this arrangement. Except the first seat we started to take he hurried over to tell us "Not that one...". Ok, well, take two. We went for a booth that a bus-person was in the process of cleaning up, and after picking up the dishes he trotted off leaving a dirty rag on the table. Once again, not really a problem. We stood next to the table just to stake our claim... and stood... and stood. i looked over and he was sitting and jawing with some of the other staff in the kitchen. We weren't really interested in sitting at the table to wait for him to come over and spray us with the crumbs that were waiting for him to come finish up, so we kept waiting. Eventually he saw fit to come over and finish up, so we sat down, started perusing the menu, and waited for our server to come take our order. A few moments later, he was there, taking our drink order, and whisking away while another bus-boy brought over some water. Out came the drinks, and away went our orders. Both of us got omelettes, and I thought it best to try the scones given the name of our eating establishment. I can't say there wasn't some disappointment when I found out they had one type of scone that morning. Strawberry-Mango. Sounded good, but I was hoping for variety. Strange event number two that morning was that while we were waiting for our food, our water glasses went empty. Despite being very pointed about wanting a refill, the girl walking around with the water pitcher pretty much serviced everyone else in that regard except us. We're not really sure why. Eventually, after walking by us twice, we looked at each and almost simultaneously said "Is it just me, or does she have a smug look on her face every time she walks by us?"
Finally, the food came out. The omelette was good, the fruit bowl was varied, the scone was... well, to put it mildly, un-satisfying. I think there was two pods of strawberry, and maybe three mango spots in the whole thing. It was a little on the dry side, and didn't have much in the way of flavor. No scone-vana for me. So, after getting the check, with a rather grumpy "You pay at the register" from our server after I pulled out the wallet, we made our way out... realizing that we never once did a refill on our (tiny) glasses of water.
i love love love this restaurant! friendly staff, comfy booths, and the best pancakes in berkeley! my only complaint.....decor. it's a bit bland, but the food more than makes up for it!
After eating the delicious huge fluffy buttery and lightly crispy on the edge pancakes from Sconehenge, I was hooked. Have you ever had one of those phases in life where you couldn't stop thinking about a certain kind of food? Be it Chocolate, McDonalds or KFC or whatever....for weeks on end I couldn't stop thinking about pancakes, I would day dream in class about pancakes during chemistry...even during sex i'd think about pancakes.. Dammit sconehenge!!!

SconeHenge vs Stonehenge. Ha ha.. That's so funny (not!) And if you still didn't get it, they have a painting of Stonehenge on one wall. The protocol here is that you walk in, grab a menu from the box near the door and sit yourself. But we didn't know that and so we stood patiently by the door. Hello! How about a sign saying grab menu and/or sit yourselves? Food ranged from all-American (waffles - delicious) to all-Mexican (scrambled eggs with rice and beans). I'd come back. Plus, unlike some of the other "brunch" joints in Berkeley, this one didn't have any wait and they have many, many tables
This little tease of a bakery and ho-hum diner confuses me a bit too. The only reason I go is because it is close to my apartment and is perfect for a late morning breakfast on a do-nothing, lounge-about, recover-from-the-evening-before kind of Saturday. The four star reviews befuddle my brain, kind of like how I usually feel upon walking to Sconehenge, maybe a bit hungover but definitely with a ravenous appetite; and yet, even in my compromised state, ready to be won over by anything the least bit fried and buttery, I consistently experience a mediocre meal.
It would be wrong to say the place stinks, though, because it doesn't. Nothing has happened to my food that would make you cringe or visit the restroom. It's just...lackluster. If you're nearby and want a filling breakfast or lunch, it will do just the trick. I often go back home afterwards for nappy-time. If your meal comes with choice of toast, get the English muffin. Tasty!
I also noticed there's maybe only one vegan option, the tofu scramble, but I have yet to try it.
Sconehenge offers a balanced breakfast menu along with home made baked goodies. The menu has the usual breakfast items, as well as some yummy Mexican breakfast dishes. They usually have about 4 specials a day written on a big board and their english muffins are absolutely to die for (you would be foolish to order regular toast).

I am a glutton. My car is littered with crumbs -- Sconehenge crumbs! Not only am I a whore for carbohydrates, I am also a car eater. I can never wait 15 minutes to get home to taste the buttery goodness of a Sconehenge scone- I want it now!!! So I open the pretty little package in the drivers seat, gently tear off a piece with several plump and juicy blueberries and attack it. Pause for air, repeat.

If you love Mexican breakfasts and/or breakfast pastries this is a great place to eat. My first time I had their special of the day which was banana pancakes. These banana pancakes were even better than the ones my Mom used to make (sorry Ma!). They were light and fluffy with whole banana pieces perfectly melded inside the pancakes with no mushiness whatsoever. Their egg breakfasts come with rice and beans (which is perfect for me since one of the breakfasts I cook most often are eggs with rice and black beans) and on my second visit I discovered that their Huervos Rancheros are even better than a lot of the tacquerias I've been to in the Bay. If you've never had Huervos Rancheros they are eggs served over tortillas with melted cheese and assorted diced vegetables. Picture that served with a side of beans (pinto or refried) and Spanish rice. Doesn't that sound good? Please believe that it is. If that isn't your cup of tea their breakfast pastries (mostly American style) should more than satisfy you. All of this at a reasonable rate and you're eatin good while spending hardly at all. I only take down one star because they are a morning and early afternoon joint while ordering breakfast for dinner is one of my favorite things to do. Sadly I can't do it at Sconehenge or else I'd be doing it all the time.

You get A LOT of food... and it's really O-K. There's a group of Mexican Breakfast Plates that are good --- but NOT great.
I'll have to try the pancakes... to find out if they're really truly as great as G.C.Y. proclaims.
Nice vibe but really strange place. Given the name, I thought that 1) they might perhaps offer scones on the menu, and 2) they would offer an English style tea and pastries experience. Neither of these turns out to be true. The menu is heavily Mexican (not bad, just surprising) and you have to ask for scones as they aren't offered anywhere. The scones aren't that good (more like a bland biscuit than a buttery pastry), so don't bother. The English muffins are made on-site and are really tasty. The space is nice and light and the staff are very friendly, and I might eat there if I happened to be in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't go out of my way as there really aren't many standouts on the menu.

On our way to Berkeley early Saturday morning this was an easy stop for breakfast near Berkeley Bowl which had not opened. Plenty of open tables and room at the small counter. Specials were on the board and we ordered french toast with sausage and strawberries topped with a mound of whipped cream. Service was quick and accurate. Clean up was quick as well. Purchased a whole wheat scone ant the cash register. Then gone.

I feel kinda bad giving this place a 3 star review. But it confuses me. ANd I don't like being confused - it gives me a headache.
So what confuses me?
1. I'm still making the east to west transition. We don't eat "breakfast' on weekdays in DC. Breakfast for me is normally 1/2 of a clif bar before going to the gym at 6am and then 1/2 afterward. Maybe I'll have oatmeal or something. But pancakes on a wednesday? Before work? Just weird. It's strangely luxurious. But freaked me out. I couldn't really sit there and enjoy it because breakfast isn't meant to be savored on a weekday. You eat it so that you don't pass out at your desk before lunch.
2. As noted below - there really aren't many scones - just like 3 different kinds. And no scones on the menu. Hmmmm
3. The pancakes were crazy delish. Light and fluffy. But my over easy eggs were a litte too easy and the coffee was no good. But the pancakes=hella yummy
So that's why I was confused. And confused means 3 stars. I may stop by some other time. But I don't know...it may take a while to get used to the whole breakfast during the week thing. Wiiieerrrdddd.

This is the holy origin of those yummy scones you find in stores all over the Bay Area and throughout California.
It's help-yourself-seating, and for the weekend brunch crowd, you'd better not be shy or timid about taking your turn, or the hungry people behind you might think you're waiting for the perfect booth, and you'll go hungry. And with so many yummies all around, you might start drooling... and then somone slips and gets hurt. No good can come of that.
The apple turnovers and scones here are absolutely heavenly. I'll embarassingly admit that I often detour here on my way to work to satisfy those baked goodie cravings.
For you breakfast afficianados, you know that there's a difference between hashbrowns and home fries. There are almost as many different types/styles of home fries as there are breakfast joints, but there are only two ways to make hashbrowns --- right and wrong! =) ... they do them right -- oh so right here. My ex-gf and I used to simply refer to Sconehenge as "the hashbrown place".

Mexican breakfast-y stuff or nothing. Can't handle the Cisco potatoes (freshies, please) or anything on the lunch menu. But Mexican breakfast complete with beans and rice and fresh, soft corn tortillas still steaming in their special little tortilla container makes me happy as a bumblebee.
I eat at Sconehenge regularly - it's very near where I live. I think of it as a dive, but it's the good kind of dive.
I agree with whoever made the confusing comment - but what confuses me is the combination of the Euro-idea of Stonehenge, the yummy brunch fare, and the deluge of Mexican food. Also, while they have the breakfast thing down (with a master's class in English muffins), their lunch sandwiches are suprisingly lame and often served with under-cooked crinkle fries.
Still, I'd be willing to give Sconehenge five stars just on the basis of their crab-avocado omelet. Whoever invented that omelet-of-the-gods deserves a medal.
HOWEVER - their kitchen can get pretty greasy-smelly, and a couple of times this had made me queasy. However, if they turn on the fan and open the door, then I usually get caught in the draft. I don't like to feel uncomfortably chilly in a restaurant. I'm not sure how Sconehenge can resolve this, but I really hope they do because it's what's keeping them from being a favorite restaurant.

4 stars for the nerdly name. They have a big painting of stonehenge in the restaurant; i would give this place 5 stars if they had a painting of stonehenge but with really big scones. how awesome would that be??
but seriously, this place is pretty good, but i don't remember seeing any scones on the menu... but maybe that's just me.
I had a reuben which was pretty good, and my friend got the french toast with berries and a mound of whipped cream - literally a mound. That was a bit gross, frankly. the service was a bit slow. At first, it was probably because they were packed, but by the time we wanted the check, there was practically no one left in the joint and we still had to wait an inordinate time for some attention.
On the whole, i can recommend it, but probably not a place you need to make an effort just to go check out, but if you're in the area, go for it.

I'm kind of surprised at the lack of pure, unadulterated praise for this place. My love for it is pure, complete, and (one hopes) undying. People who think there is better breakfast in Berkeley don't get out much. This is the best in town, period. I like Westside, and enjoy La Note (if not the wait), but this is better. Don't get me started on the overratedness (and absolutely comical wait) of Rick & Ann's.
All of the egg dishes at Sconehenge are delicious, and my co-eater (girlfriend sounds so pedestrian) and I could eat the egg burrito every day of the week without ever being bored. Add to that the house hot sauce (easily one of the 7 Wonders of the East Bay), and, well, it's our go-to place. We'd go more often, but it would be embarrassing - "look, they're back. AGAIN."
When I give this five stars, understand that I'm doing it in the context of Berkeley breakfast. It's the best Sconehenge that it can be.
Amendment:
I'm keeping the five stars, but should offer a couple caveats. The coffee, like coffee at almost all breakfast places, is bad. Not mediocre, bad. I really don't understand why breakfast joints don't keep up with the greater coffee community. In the Bay Area, and in the country at large, we are used to and expect good coffee. Why do restaurants/diners continue to serve the watered-down, flavorless stuff?
Also, some people don't like hash browns (the shredded potato dish). They prefer home fries (the cut potatoes dish). I like hash browns myself, and think they are perfect for delivering the hot sauce I mention above, but if you expect home fries with breakfast, you will be disappointed.

This place is a conundrum!
1. You can buy scones from it all over the Bay Area, but not at the restaurant. (I have to yell at them to go get the small yummy tea scones from the back. The mammoth mother scones in the case are best used as door-stops. They are just to big to taste light and perky.)
2. It's run by a hard-working Asian family, yet much of the food has a Mexican twist. (Almost all the egg dishes come with rice and beans, and that seems wrong at times. Like why cannot they include a scone? Nope -- rice and beans for you! What's up? I don't get it...)
3. Seating and payment are laissez-faire. There is no rhyme or reason to it. And many are clueless how it all works.
4. The coffee is not that great. This is a sin for a breakfast joint.
IF YOU NAME YOURSELF SCONEHENGE, WHY NOT PROMOTE THE SCONES MORE? Cross promotion could occur here. You eat the scones from the store, and that drives you to the restaurant. And vice versa. No, not how it works.

Not too much of a wait, solid food overall, really tasty bacon.
Our waiter, though, was decidedly weird. I asked him for the bacon to be cooked "medium, not too crispy" and he said "I can't really communicate that to the kitchen, but I'm sure it will be fine." Then, when we asked for salt and pepper, and cream for coffee, he advised us to borrow it from our neighbors at the next table, again saying that, "I'm sure it will be fine." He didn't ask them himself, he just told us to ask them.
It was bizarre.
One last note - I disagree with Andy M. (below) - I think the scones are amazing - I didn't actually have one at the restaurant, but I buy them at Berkeley bowl all the time, and they are some of the best scones I've ever had, particularly when you heat them up a little in the oven.
When my girlfriend told me about Sconehenge I had to try it. So we took BART all the way to Berkeley and walked the 1.5 mile trek from the station. I was expecting a high end place that produced their world famous scones. Upon our arrival I wasn't very impressed as it looked like the diner found around the way.
The food was ok but nothing to write home about. The tea scones however are delicious and a must try. If I lived in the neighborhood and wanted to meet up with a friend for some coffee i'd probably stop by. Other than that, the trek wasn't worth it.

I don't get the deal with the scones. I didn't even know what a scone was when I got there.
I've been there a few times, service is pretty good, especially if you get there early before the rush--but then that might become the "early" rush, (I hope not ;)
The food though is awesome, pancakes are among the best you can get anywhere in the area, and the sausages are awesome!
The "mexican twist" as it has been called was delightful (one of the few that can pull off huevos rancheros)
