I really do not trust my locks to any old stylist. I've had reeeeeeally bad experiences before - where I've come home sobbing and my mother has threatened to throw bricks through the offending salon's windows. Fo'reals.

I was in serious need of a cut, and far from my usual salon (based where I used to live in NYC), so decided to hit Yelp to see if there were any salons familiar with thick Asian hair. Found Scissor Sound, was able to make an appointment for the morning the next day, and headed in!

The receptionist spoke English which was great since my Korean is very rusty. I was able to convey what I wanted to the stylist, and she went right to work! Initially I had some trepidation (what if she makes me look like an Asian Tina Turner and gives me crazy layers??), but at the end of it - looked absolutely beautiful. She listened when I told her that I hate flat irons since it makes my hair too flat on my face, and finished by just flat ironing the ends, which gave it a shimmering glossy effect.

The salon is very straight forward - no one's really all that friendly or nice, but they do a banging good job. Will definitely be back. Thanks Yelp for pointing me in the right direction!!

I've had Japanese straightening treatment three times over the past few years at Scissor Sound.  The first two times produced great results.

The third time, I am completely dissatisfied.  My hair is now badly damaged.  Part of the process when touching up roots is that the stylist protects your already straightened hair.  This part of my treatment was not administered adequately, because all of my new damage is in areas that were already straight (i.e., areas other than the roots, mostly at the tips).  I've been using specialized conditioning treatment to repair the damage, but to no avail.

Moral of the story:  Make sure your already straightened hair is fully protected when touching up your roots!

I'm a Korean American born and raised in New York, which means I grew up all my life getting my haircut at Korean hair salons up and down Northern Blvd from Flushing to Little Neck.   I have had my fair share of haircut experiences at SuperCuts, Greatcuts, Uglycuts, whatevercuts... and I NEVER walked out with a smile on my face.  My hair is not even that difficult to cut, and I don't ask for much.  But after 22 years of having my hair cut on a 2-3 week basis, I've come to the realization that my hair works best at a korean hair salon.

Scissor Sound started in NY way way back then, and I remember getting my haircut at the original flushing location when I was about ten or so.  I loved how they cut my hair back then, and sure as hell love it now.  This is the only place I will get my haircut in Boston, even though I hate taking the B-line all the way out to packards.

This place is clean, habla ingles, friendly, and they have someone who washes your hair once, twice, or three times if you really want them to (dont forget to tip her).  I like to get my hair cut by Andy.  He knows exaclty how to cut my sides and back, as well as shape the top part.

But what makes a Korean hair salon so damn good?  They look at your hair from all angles, and take into deep love, care, passion, and consideration of any stray hairs, uneven edges, or weird shit.  It's a QUALITY haircut.

I've been here about six times so far, and I plan to keep going back.  It's good. OH, AND yes it's a bit pricier ($25 for a dude's haircut) but trust me, the extra 10 bucks compared to WhateverCuts is worth every penny.

Been going here for like 2 years. Please is awesome. They are korean and Im chinese, so I cant really communicate with them either but its ok. No matter who cuts my hair there, it turns out awesome. How do I know this? Cause people tell me its awesome.

Hair washing-Fantastic, way better then some of the more uppity salons
Hair Cutting- Ok I told my stylist a joke once and she cut my ear a lil with a trimmer. Ill let you decide whose fault that was but the haircut ended up well. Seriously, it never turns out bad when they cut it.

A little too pink for me though and it does hurt my ego a bit. But then again its probably a good thing.

A good place for a quick trim and cut. The service is good, and they are good with Asian hair.

Korean Style, Cheaper then other places ($35).  They are good at simple hair cuts and trims.  However, their perming skills aren't that great.  I got a wavy perm for closer to $80, yet it lasted 3 weeks, and now i have virtually straight hair a little more damaged than before due to the chemicals!

Also, the receptionist wasn't very friendly (during checkout).  She was disrupting the stylist's concentration: receptionist wanted to gossip.

I got my hair cut here because it is in my neighborhood and looked ok.

They seem to specialize in Asian hair, which I don't happen to have, but I really like how my cut came out. It might be because I just had a trim and had her mostly  maintain the style I already had. Still, it was a lot of shaping and layering.

I would recommend Scissor Sound, but other reviews on this page make me nervous to do so. I may have just lucked out.

The one thing that I didn't like was that no one seemed to speak English very well (my stylist was really sweet though and still asked me a lot of questions so she'd get it right) and you miss out on the whole chatty salon experience.

based on reading some of the reviews, I figured that I would give it a try.  Made appointment with Dean and I was on storrow drive when there was an accident.  I called the salon to let them know that I was running late, BUT the lady who picked up the phone said that they can not...NOT see me because II was running late.  "I'.m down the street and i will be there in 10 min."
"We can't take you in because you are already 4 pass 5..(I think she ment 5 pass 4) and because it's a Saturday we are busy.  I'm sorry but you have to cancel your appointment and make another one."
"Your kidding me, right?"
"Sorry"
I hung up and that was that.  I consider 90% of a business is customer serive and their service sucked.  She didn't even ask me who my appointment was with nor seem to care.  What a waist of my 1 1/2 that day.

I'm originally from LA (near Koreatown), so am used to going to good Korean hair salons for a reasonable price. Scissor Sound also has a branch in LA, so I thought I'd give it a try here. I've been there twice now (once with Andy for a trim & once with another girl who I forgot the name of for a hair manicure), & both times were pretty OK~ They have a great eye for Asian hairstyles that match my face shape & are pretty friendly (except for the receptionist girl, even when you speak in Korean to her). Although $40 for a haircut isn't too bad, I still think it's much pricier than what I'm used to for similar services. Also, it's quite difficult to get an appointment with them, so overall I give them 4 stars~

Based on Qingjian's review, I decided to go have a hair cut at Scissor Sound Hair. And the result is... by far, it is the best hair cut I've gotten in my  life in the USA!!!

Andy gave me a hair cut and he is amazing.  I would definitely go back to him.  I hope he won't leave Boston.

ok, so my sister and I did a TON of research (mostly based on Yelp) regarding Japanese Hair Straightening as my hair has been colored for EVER-yeah, starting turning white when I was 22 so I basically have severely damaged hair.  I am so sick of my kinky curly hair (not thick either and certainly not unfrizzy)  So I booked my appt with Scissor Sound primarily b/c of the reviews but secondly as they would do this on a Sunday-AWESOME! But still very nervous as I'm really trying to grow out my hair and its about 5 inches past my shoulders.

So, in the intirim, my sis finds out about BKT and how it actually is better for damaged hair and the more damage the better.  But alas, I'm a girl w/ no patience and we can't get the goods until mid week so I figure-she can order (her hair is highlighted as mine is dark and one processed color)and we can observe with my experience and I'll do it on her when we get the stuff.  I opted to go with the Liscio product they used as it claims to transform the damaged hair much like BKT (BKT only lasts 2-4 months while Liscio lasts up to 8 months or a year)

One point I will say-not many people speak english in this salon so food for thought... you want details...do your research.  Second-previous yelpers have commented on the bitchy receptionist; either she was not working or she no longer works there.  I got a VERY kind welcome and opted to keep my stuff as knowing I'd be there at least 4 hours I wanted my laptop.

They told me up front that I had very damaged hair (duh) and it would be $550 holy shit!?!?. Expected $350-400 but i'm there,.,,,what'll ya do right? OK, (they offered a 5% discount for cash-so i save about 30 bucks)

I actually freaked after they first washed the chemical out my hair-it was a FRIZZBALL...but as he took tiny tiny pieces and flat ironed them i saw the improvement.  However, it took three hours to straight iron. When he was done I almost shit...this is awesome! I asked the only english speaking woman if I was done and she said NO, we need to nuetralize.  Ok so you're washing my hair again and strightening AGAIN?????????? I made my sis go pick up some mikes hard leamonade-I figured they'd never be the wiser. Might as well enjoy my downtime.

Fast forward to him blowdrying my hair the second time(and it was straight) quickly running an iron over it...and then another non speaking english woman cutting it to PERFECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (with the help of the wee translater receptionist)

HOLY MUTHA FUCKING SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My hair has never been so unbelivably shiney, straight and cut like there's no tomorrow (didn't charge for the cut which included cool bangs which I can now wear) I had these doohickeys on the corners of my forehead that would curl up with a tad of sweat....but WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Warning though......if you've done your research you know you can't touch (yes they comment on me touching my hair ) or clip or put behind your ears for 4 days and of course no water,  AND damn i did buy the products (another 115 bucks) ouch.  But ya know what-I got 6 compliments on my way home-4 from people who already knew my hair.  I feel like a goddess and until my hair falls out..I will recommend this place to EVERYONE in search of...will update with my sis's BKT this week. (home deal)

Oh another thing, the owner commented as to how surprised they were as to my results based on my damage. Think about it .. if my hair was that bad and I had major major damage then for someone with minimal damage....WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love them, esp Jenny who I think is the owner. I will let them to henna to color my hair moving forward to lessen the damage.  They got their game on esp for a sunday!  Highly recommended! Oh and a FREEKING parking lot-hello. For you smokers like me.  They let you go out the back door (think of major frizz mode) and have a butt without embarrasement! And no comment on my 3 mikes during the process heheheheheheheh. Another thing, I live in Back Bay and an uber newbury street salon snot-but after reading how acote burnt hair among others(my former salon since my boy left)...i'm reformed-I don't care about price if I can wake up and go...NEVER in my life.  it's all revolved around when I wash and how long to strighten....consider it please-sooooooooooooooooooo fucking worth it!

consider BKT which only a few salons do in the area currently if you are totally damaged-doesn't last as long but saves your hair (one salon is in Newton but only does Mon and Tues nights)  Just do your research before getting the process done-and don't skimp-money does buy you love (with your hair that is)

*****update...my sis got the product off of ebay-the bkt and another impatient gal did it HERSELF (there is no concern about the straightening time as it stays in your hair for 4 days) She said the fumes were a bit much but wow-i wish I waited-hers won't last nearly as long thought and i wasn't about to chance it....update to follow*****

I'd seen ads in Boston Korean & since it's in my neighborhood I booked an appointment for a haircut.  I'm a dork when it comes to going salons and I always leave it til the last minute to force myself to get a haircut.  This is my first review on Yelp because I haven't been very motivated to rate businesses;  But I wanted to write a review for Scissor Sound because they did such a great job:)  I have Asian hair & tend to have trouble at non-Asian salons with getting haircuts that I like (usually ends up too full around the bottom?  I don't know how else to describe it, even when they use razors to cut).

My hairdresser was the guy with dyed spiky hair & glasses (Andy I think) and he was very patient and thorough.  I let him know that I'm not really high maintenance with my hair and wanted it short but not so short that I have to take a lot of time in styling it in the morning (when I went in my hair was super long).  He recommended a length for my face shape & cautioned against getting shorter bangs.

I tend to be pretty quiet & nervous at salons and also my Korean is not so great.  At one point another stylist came over to straighten my hair for a bit and spoke to me in English for a bit.  I had spoken to her over the phone when booking my appointment & she tried to put me a bit more at ease.  After straightening my hair my original hair dresser came back to check my hair and do some finishing touches with the shears. He also gave me advice (in English) on how to style my hair & that he cut my hair so that it would still have a nice shape if I wanted to just do the bare minimum in the morning of just putting some mousse in.

I would say despite my salon-phobia I had a great experience at Scissor Sound and would recommend it to folks who would like a great, edgy hair cut from knowledgeable & personable staff.  Both my stylist and the receptionist had no problem communicating with me in English & the end result was great.

The hair cut was $40 (not including tip) & the interior looked clean & modern.  I went this afternoon (Friday) and booked a few days earlier.

I can't comment on any of the stylists except Andy, but he is top-notch. He's great at what he does and puts a lot of effort into making sure it's right.

When I first started going there, they had a receptionist that was pretty awful. You might have heard horror stories about her, but rest assured she's been replaced and the current receptionist is friendly.

I hope Andy doesn't figure out he can make a lot more than $25 a hair cut somewhere else.

i'm korean and very happy with all the services that i have gotten there.  while it is on the pricey side, i feel that the way they cut the asian hair maintains the cut longer so the higher price is a little justifiable.  I've also gotten the magic straight perm and coloring done and while it cost an arm and a leg, it has cut down on hair preparing time every day and i have gotten numerous compliments on the highlights and color.  i like it!!

By far the best Hair Salon for the money you could find in the area.  Not that I've really tried any other salon, but Scissor Sound definitely tops the charts.  I'm pretty picky when it comes to getting my hair done, but Scissor Sound will definitely give you a great cut, at a decent price.  If the modern ethos of the mirrors and styling chairs don't alert you to their quality cuts, then get your hair washed with a short head massage and sit back to literally, the sound of scissors flying through your hair.  It's one of the few salons I've been to who take the time to actually use scissors of varying degrees to cut your entire head instead of substituting clippers.  Don't be scared though, you'll get a really natural looking cut, and yes you may have clippers if you absolutely have to.  If you want a good men's cut definitely ask for Dean, and tell him the Korean who doesn't speak Korean well sent you ;)

I just got a hair cut. I showed a picture (a short bob that Katie holmes had). She was able to do exactly what I wanted. I am east Asian and have been going to hair salons on newbury street and they have not been able to replicate what I show them in the picture. It's also quite a big cheaper that newbury street salons. I will definitely go back.

An Asian hair salon.  Their clientele is 60% Korean, 20% other Asians, and 20% others.  The sister branch is in Flushing, NY.  I went here for the first time a couple of weeks ago because my regular hairdresser is out of town.  I was not happy was my haircut.  Usually I don't have to use gel right after my haircut, but I have to with this one.  Disappointing...

I've never had a hair cut this bad  -- regardless of price!  My hair's not hard to work with.  At scissor sound, the front-desk lady was rude and the stylist was very novice, left my hair unevenly trimmed and waved funny.  It was sooo awful that I had to immediately go to another salon to get my hair redone!  Waste of my $150!

$35 for a woman's haircut (short hair), and they did a nice job.  The salon is modern, with a pleasant atmosphere.  The staff was friendly and welcoming.  I had a male stylist who was not too talkative but I'm not that big on forcing conversation in those situations anyway.  They are closed on Tuesdays, which is good to know, since neither their web site nor their generic answering service mentions it.  I thought it was a pretty good experience..FYI, they are listed in the Yellow Pages online by the Korean name Gawisori.

I've been going to a salon on Newbury St and have loved every haircut I've gotten there, but I'm not loving the high price tag any more. I decided to give Scissor Sound a try because they were less expensive and in a more convenient location for me. Free parking in a small lot next to the salon too. For $35, I'm very happy with the cut. Andy was very accomodating to the changes I asked for from my original request and did a good job thinning out my super-thick hair. I admit I was very nervous when he first started cutting because I was afraid I'd end up w/ a fluffy haircut like the ones from the American salons I've been to before, but the result was balanced and sleek.
