MmmmmMmmmm good!

Schubert's is worth the craziness I have to go through to look for parking on Clement street.  The cakes are absolutely delicious, beautifully decorated and easy on the wallet.

I always buy a cake for a friend's birthday, and various other events from here.  My absolute fave?! The princess cake which according to their website is their "delicious white cake layers with raspberry and kirsch custard filling, whipped cream and marzipan icing!"  I think it's their best selling cake and is only $26.95 for their medium size which feeds 10 to 12 people!

I picked one up for New Year's eve and everyone loved it!
Sooooo.... if you need a birthday cake or just want to satisfy your sweet tooth or brighten up your day, stop by here and pick up a cake, a slice or a couple and you'll be good to go!

Yummmmy!  I think I'm going to have to make a stop here soon.

The BEST MANGO MOUSSE ever can be found HERE!
5 STARS NO DOUBT.
In every occasion, even my dad buy the cake from this place.
The mousse is not too sweet but you can still taste the sweetness.
The cake is made with a perfection touch of sweetness and moistness.

I ain't gonna lie. . I have a strange affinity for what might be called "Old Lady Cakes". I love cake.   I particularly love old school cakes with lots of cream, chocolate, sponge, mousses, etc.   The first time I ever went into Merritt Bakery I almost died of happiness. . . until I tasted the goods and was overwhelmed by the taste of pure chemicals in the sub-par ingredients.  I shied away from Old Lady Cakes after that because I was scared.

The other day I was craving Old Lady Cake fiercely and was with a friend who lives in the city - I promised him a ride home if he'd come with me to Schubert's.  I had it in my head that I had never been there.  Of course, once we passed the threshold, I realized that I had been there before WAAAAAY back in the day with my abuelita to pick up some sugar cookies for "the nuns" (cloistered nuns who to this day live in a big convent across the street from my mom's).  Anyhoo, I was interested in some black forest cake and perhaps a slice of princess cake. . . princess cake is somewhat of an anomaly for me as one of my biggest mentors loves it so and I have yet to understand why.  Enter Schubert's. . . they do princess cake right.  Soft sponge, creamy center, thin layer of raspberry jam, crispy cookie layer on the bottom. . .and green MARZIPAN, not nasty ol' fondant, enrobes the little slice of sweetness.  I finally could understand my mentor's love of Princess Cake!  I also ended up with a slice of Black Forest, a mini-Chocolate Mousse Cake and a piece of Opera Cake.  What?  I had driven ALL THE WAY from Oakland. . . you know that I not about to leave with one paltry piece of cake!

The Black Forest was good but I am not a big fan of boozy desserts.  . . I like my booze neat, not in my sweets so that and the Princess cake had a little too much kirsch and kirschwasser for my taste.  My dream would be to have a custom Princess cake with no kirsch in it. . .OH YEAH!!!  The chocolate mousse was creamy and moussey and chocolaty with nary a hint of chemical warfare.  The Opera Cake was my favorite. . my only quibble would be that the toasted almonds that adorn the outside should be toasted hazelnuts but that's just me being picky and pastryqueen-ish.

I didn't really notice how much things cost - I think I found the prices fair for what I got. . I will fully admit that my mind gets foggy in the presence of so many baked goods.

Also, I can neither confirm nor deny that I went to Schubert's today to get LouLou a slice of Princess Cake for her 3rd birthday.  Nor can I confirm or deny that little birthday pit bulls really like green marzipan.  :)

Of all the dessert places in SF, I think Schubert's tops the cake.  It is as close as I will get to Extraordinary desserts in San Diego.  They have a large variety of small, personal sized cakes/tarts/mousses/etc, and the larger versions of them.  The cakes are very light, fluffy, and not too sweet.  Their most popular cakes are: the princess cake, the mango mousse, and ... something else I forgot.

Unlike all the other bakeries in SF, Schubert's does not over charge for a small piece of dessert.  Most personal sized desserts are $3.45, and the full sized cakes can cost up to $20.  There's always a constant flow of traffic coming through this bakery, which is a good sign.  They have a few tables and chairs where you can get a piece of dessert and sit down to eat.   We got their mango mousse to share, and it was delicious!! THe mango taste wasn't overpowering, and the mousse was perfect.

+ Great Selection of Cakes
+ Decent Prices
+ Order by Slice or the whole cake

- Some cakes you have to pre-order

[M] I love you Oppa~ Thank you so much for finally remembering the name of this place!!! I've been craving for the Princess Cake for the LONGEST time now and thanks to my brother Eric, I was able to try it again. The first time I tried Schubert's was when my brother brought home a slice of Princess Cake for me. Ever since then, it has become my favorite cake! :3

I came here again with Wayne and bought several cakes home. This time, we got the Mango Mousse, White Chocolate Raspberry Mousse, Tiramisu, Plain Cheesecake, and the lovely Princess Cake (All for less than $18) :3

My BF tried the Plain Cheesecake while I had the Princess Cake and shared the White Chocolate Raspberry Mouse. Wayne didn't like his Cheesecake very much and thought it was too "soft and bland" for his liking. He liked the White Chocolate Raspberry Mousse though. I tried a little bit of each cake (except for the Mango Mousse) and thought the Princess Cake was the tastiest out of the 6. Fondant haters will not like this cake though...

I also wanted to try the Pink Champagne cake, but that one you have to pre-order. Perhaps I'll order next time for a special occasion.

i LOVE cakes/pastries...SCHUBERTS IS SO GOOD

They're pretty friendly and helpful when you want to specialize a cake.  I've had two cakes ordered for my friends.  One was a special girnomous FRUIT TART cake for my roommie on her 21st birthday and another smaller tiramisu cake for my friend's 21st!  (I was running late one day to pick up the cake, I called in and they were super nice and I was able to get the cake YAY!) And I personally received a Swedish Princess Cake for my birthday ;] NOM NOM NOM.

My personal favorite is the NAPOLEON individual pastry (not sure if they make it for large cakes/parties) but they're simply D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S (must try...i miss it - when they sell OUT ;[ they sell out...so i havent been able to get it recently cuz i come in rather late *TEARS*)

I absolutely love Schubert's!

I have been visiting this bakery for years and years now whether it's for a birthday cake or just a sweet snack.  Trust me, I have tried ALL the cakes at Schubert's - all the mousse cakes, all the cheesecakes, and all the specialty cakes, and they are all scrumptious! My favorite cake, of anywhere thus far, is the Swedish Princess cake at Schubert's.  It has a delicious light green marzipan shell with moist cake, whipped cream, and raspberry custard.  It is a very pretty cake that is just sweet enough to the taste. I also love that many individual slices are offered, so you don't have to buy the whole cake to enjoy a piece of sugary delight.  If you're not a fan of cakes, Schubert's also sells delectable cookies that make a perfect gift for a friend or just for yourself (Option B is my preference).

I love the double chocolate mousse.  I'm born n raised in the Rich, so this place has been my local bakery for my entire life.  Good thing for me, its definitely one of the best in the city.  The chocolate mousse is my family's favorite.  Its fluffy and not too sweet as others tend to be.  We always have to get one for a birthday and its not offical until we cut the cake.

MORE PRINCESS CAKE, NOW! It's honestly the best princess cake I've ever had, and just thinking about it is giving me an intense Schubert's craving.

Their chocolate cheesecakes are also just as amazing.

Rock on, Schubert's.

i got the Swedish Princess Cake and while reasonable for it's price, it was very dissapointing on an absolute scale of cakes. The filling was way too sweet and the cake texture was average. I did appreciate the marzipan layer and that definitely redeemed the cake a bit for me.

In my opinion, I prefer cakes from Sheng Kee or Sakura Cakes.

Back when I was very young, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed

                                             = (* *) =
                                                (")(")

I used to work  at a domestic violence shelter in a confidential location in San Francisco. My clients where the little ones who were also trying to escape domestic violence with their mothers.   Sadly, they experienced abuse in their lives from the very person who should be protecting them.

These kids will oftentimes find themselves still living at the shelter during their birthdays and holidays.  If safety (and their mothers) allowed it,  I will bring the kids to Schubert's to choose their birthday cake.

The cakes and pastries at Schubert's are so pretty and super-cute that they made even the saddest little heart smile.  Their faces will just light up like the candles on their cake when it was time to show their cake to their little friends, the mothers and staff/volunteers at the shelter who were eagerly anticipating the "pretty" cake.

Did I mention very delicious as well?  Schubert's cakes are very fresh, moist and known for not being overly sweet.

On a lighter note, I went back to Schubert's to get a cake for a family party. Of course I had to order my ultimate favorite-- "THE PRINCESS CAKE."  Thttp://www.yelp.com/bi... The Princess Cake is a traditional Swedish dessert consisting of layers of moist white cake with raspberry jam filling in the middle covered in marzipan icing (sugar and almond paste).

It was such a hit during our family barbecue.  It was very dainty and elegant-looking but even the tough "I only like chocolate" male Latinos in the family could not resist and came back for seconds.

A medium Princess Cake (serves up to 12 people) costs $26.95. Not bad for such delicious, pretty and well-crafted dessert.  Next time I'll get the large one- or better yet the XX Large! More for me if they don't finish! ("Crossing fingers behind my back! ";P)

Growing up in the Richmond [10th&Lake],we always got our bread, and anything we needed for celebrating special events at Shubert's- plus weekly,my Mom would stop by to pick up pastry's or other treats on her way home as a Nurse @ [Children's Hosp...I have such wonderful memories of Shuberts!!! Though I now live in the East Bay,my Son & I recently stopped by for coffee and pastry's while on Clement Street and Shuberts is still as good as when I was a little girl more than 55 years ago!!
My daughter, getting married soon, will be looking at them, hopefully, for their wedding cake.... It's amazing and refreshing that a business has survived this long,is still on Clement Street, and Still continues with  the same quality and producing so much yummyness that has brought thousands of  lovers of Shuberts back through their doors for more goodies year after year.....          Thank you Shuberts!!

We just had Schubert's strawberry shortcake, sheet cake size.  It was absolutely delicious!  The kids couldn't take their eyes off of the beautifully sculpted candy pieces and the girls were trying to grab the little plastic rings while I was cutting the cake; I didn't ask for those rings by the way; the bakery put them on themselves.

Schubert's Bakery has fantastic owners!!!
Some time ago, I had called in the morning to order a cake.  I was put on hold; time was running and about fifteen minutes later, I got frustrated and felt forgotten and had to run errands so I hung up.  I was still irked about it that day so I went to the website and made a complaint in the comments section, stating that I knew morning business was good and busy, but I felt my business was important also.
I received a reply from the owner who apologized and agreed with me.  He said he talked to the morning crew and asked for my address so he could send me a gift certificate.

I really appreciated that the owner addressed the issue which showed tremendous responsibility and appreciation of his customers. It was an added bonus to receive such a generous gift certificate.  So I've gone back to Schubert's.

The Napoleon cake is out of this world!  We had that in June for my daughter's 2nd birthday.  My guests and I couldn't get enough of it.  This strawberry shortcake that we ordered for today was a good $130 which goes to show how much we love Schubert's, talented baking and trust them to make such an important cake for our oldest daughter's 5th birthday!

Anytime I think about Schubert's my taste buds do a lil dance, no joke.

This place has an array of really good cakes, but my personal favorite is the Mango Mouse, it's the closest to heaven I can get. I'm not a big cake fan, so that tells you a lot right there. Their service is always quick and they've always been more than helpful, thanks guys!

These folks are wonderful - the staff, cakes, everything!

I contacted Schubert's for a fundraiser, and they were super sweet and very on top of things. Though it was hard for us to get a hold of each other, we never had a problem with communication. Their cakes are delicious, especially black currant mousse cake and opera cake. The opera cake is hazelnut sponge with a chocolate truffle filling, with hazelnut praline cream. Everyone was a fan of these cakes, and I was impressed with their level of professionalism and punctuality. ;)

Their staff is warm, friendly, and professional. They really do care about their customers and the community. Will definitely be ordering from them for a party/gathering/any event that could use a mouthwatering cake! =)

Awesome. Just hosted a Baby Shower. I was going to get a basic cake at Safeway, when I thought I'd try out Schuberts. I know the location well.  I ordered & paid online.  A double Chocolate mousse round cake. I asked it be decorated "festively".

The cake was delicious and they did a WONDERFUL job with decorating...It was precious.  It  really made the day special.  The ordering process was SOOOO easy.  All online.

I can't say enough good things about it!!!   I can't wait to go again.

I came here for the first time when I was a sophmore in high school. It's been about 5 years, and I still haven't forgotten about this place! My friend and I even used to ditch class just to come here to get one of their little cakes =x. I've tried every flavor of their mousse cakes, and they're ALL equally good.

But I have to say.. their cheesecake isn't all that great. I don't know what it is, but it has a weird fluffy texture and taste. It looks really pretty, but if you're coming here for the first time and don't know what to get, stay away from it.

Why couldn't they just call it the Prince cake.....and then maybe add purple rain drops to it or something.  It makes me think twice about buying a cake for a dood's birthday when it's called the princess cake.

However, it's not really a problem buying it for a girl.  Dilemna Dilemna.  Each time I've come here its been for buying a birthday cake.  They make the process so easy, especialy since you know you've had their cake before and you know how good they are.  The princess cake is pretty bomb and the opera is just great for hazelnut lovers.  The presentation is good, and they always have fair priced candles for you to buy so you dont' have to scramble somewhere else to get one.

I tried this place because everyone was saying good things about it... coming back to yelp after trying it, I realized that I made a huge mistake: I didn't get the princess cake.  I had been in the mood for strawberries, and I ordered the "shortcake".  It was a let down.  The cake itself was alright, but the strawberries tasted really weird. The person to my right said that his neapolitan cake was "acceptable, but not great."
I might try it again when I'm in the mood for marzipan

I used to pass by this place all the time when I was a kid, forced to petulantly accompany my parents and grandma as they trolled the dim sum shops and grocery stores.  I never gave this place much of a second thought.

Not until a good twenty and some odd years later was I introduced to a Schubert's cake at a friend's birthday.

It was like someone had caught 100 lily-white cherubs, crushed them up, and baked them right into this cake.  Unbelievably moist and delicate, the mango flavor dissolved on your tongue.  It took every ounce of respect and dignity to not shove the birthday boy out of the way and indulge myself with abandonment.

The Swedish Princess cake is also tantalizing, with the same fluffy moist cake inside and a fragrant almond marzipan icing on the outside.  Imagining it now is making my mouth water.

Another great thing is that you can order and pay for the cake online, and just pop in to pick it up.

Schuberts! Schuberts! Schuberts! Yet another Inner Richmond gem that took me moving out of the neighborhood to finally check out. Sigh!

I popped in here to get a birthday cake for my Godmother. I was immediately overwhelmed by how many wonderful cakes, tarts, pies, cookies, etc., were staring at me. I really didn't have much time to spare, so I had to make up my mind pretty quickly. Even though I wanted to sample everything, I couldn't afford to do so. Given that I'm a Mango Freak, I had to order the Mango Mousse Cake. I gave in a bit, and ordered a few Mini Mixed Fruit Tarts as well, because the mango in the Mango Mousse Cake was clearly not enough for me. :0

Let me just say that I was counting the minutes to when the cake was to be served, and by golly, it was so worth the wait. The mousse was sweet, and there was mango bursting with every single bite. The cake was super light, fluffy, and moist, and OH MYLANTA, it was pure heaven. Everyone at the party, from my mom, family friends, and more importantly, the guest of honor, totally raved about this cake and asked where I got it, etc., Needless to say, we are all huge fans. BTW, I had at least two slices.

Oh, I can't forget about the fruit tart, which was absolutely delish. The crust was perfect, and the fruits (mango, papaya, strawberry, kiwi) were so fresh and sweet. I wish there were more mango pieces. I just can't get enough of my fav fruit! Yummy!

Thank you, Schuberts! You deserve this 5 star rating! Service was efficient and friendly. The cake and tarts were outstanding, and cannot wait to try more of your sweets. Cheers!

DROOL...

Growing up around this district, I've apparently been spoiled with such great eateries. I didn't know that I was so lucky to have such a high quality bakery such as Schubert's. Going to college in SoCal has led me to the expectation that there MUST be some great bakery... it's just hiding. WELL, i've searched for 3 years and I've been unable to locate one. Schubert still wins!

Their display case is like none other. Every space is filled with beautiful cakes that come whole, sliced, or in a mini piece. The average slice ranged around $3.45. You can place a cake order or you can buy an already made one. I had just finished lunch at Burma Superstar and was so happy that I could walk a block and a half to Schubert's.

-Princess: You certainly eat with your eyes first when you see this cake! Tastes as great as it looks!
-Opera: Chocolatey and dense. For chocolate lovers most def!
-Tiramisu: Light and airy, every bakery should be able to make good tiramisu.
-Apricot and Cheese Danish - $2.10

I'm not going to suggest anything to buy here in particular, it's really all wonderful.  There's something here for everyone and the ladies working there are so kind.

The food here is great, the desserts were pretty impressive with a wide range of cakes, chocolates, vanillas, and some good looking mango things.

This bakery is pretty far from my house but I make the drive out because I love their cakes.

It is hard to find a place that will make a good Swedish Princess Cake and NOT overdue it on the almond flavor. Theirs is one of the best I have had.

Their cookies and other pasteries are pretty good as well but I have had better. The cakes are what you should get!

Some other must trys are...
Napoleon: Great for those who want a lighter cake...sometimes hard to eat because it uses pastry puff layers instead of cake layers.

Italian Rum Cake: Great for those who love milk chocolate because it isn't too overpowering and it is not bitter!

Chocolate Truffle Torte: For the true chocolate fans!

Swedish princess cake: For those who want something fruitty and different!!

Everyone knows this place just owns. Best bakery in the area. The I had some type of raspberry twist that was top notch. Amazing, you can really taste the quality (or amount of butter) with every bite. So many pastries at other bakeries are lacking that old school quality and feel. Not this place, the pound cake is good too! But the raspberry twist is a must. The only reason I did not give 5 stars, is that the selection is not consistent and sometimes they are all out of my favorites. Other wise this place is 4 and a half stars!

I stopped in here yesterday to pick up a custard croissant for the next day which I just pleasantly devoured this morning and mmmm...was is Amazing!!

Thanks to my yelper friend Cassie J. who suggested this place a while back, I would have never known of this fabulous bakery. So how excited was I to see it in the corner of my eye while on clement St. Yesterday. I quickly jutted over and was  immediately in awe of the amazing, array of beautiful decked out cakes and pastries. I was literally in a baker lover's heaven.

Unfortunately, I had to choose just one heavenly treat. I quickly came to the decision  on the delicious looking custard croissant, one of my all time favorite pastries, which I was so looking forward to try.

Croissant was baked to a soft buttery perfection, with the perfect amount of rich creamy custard in the middle. This literally was the best custard croissant I have ever indulged in, I could not think of one thing wrong with it.

As for everything else, the ambiance is classy and immaculate, service was ok. I did feel a little rushed, however it was pretty busy.

Other than that, from the one heavenly croissant I enjoyed and for the price of only $ 2.70 that makes my day. I now know where to get my specialty treats and is absolutely well worth the drive, cannot wait to try there Princess cake...Mmmmm

Okay, dont' hurt me but I only had some of my friend's baked assorted cookies. These cookies aren't your grocery brand of cookies and they're certainly a great find. This is a great spot for those with a hankering for the baked dessert, especially if you've walked all the way here from PPQ (see previous review tonight). And you can't go wrong with their cakes.

One of the cases was entirely empty. I hope that it's a sign of great business and not a reflection of this economy.

This is where it all began- my obsession with baked goods.  I was born and raised within a ten block radius of Schubert's.  One of my earliest memories was getting free cookies from the nice couple who owned and ran the bakery, finding a dime on the ground...  good times.  Flash forward to day, I'm still as enamoured with Schubert's as ever.  Not much has changed except the couple sold the bakery to a Frenchman.  I still love the apricot pocket, German cheesecake (when they make it- I miss this!) and, of course, the Princess Cake.  Perfection wrapped in a tidy marzipan fondant.
My birthday is coming up, ahem.

If I could actually afford it, I would have a fake wedding just so I could justify ordering a ten-tiered cake. Each tier would be one of the luscious yet light-tasting cake flavors at Schubert's such as tiramisu, double chocolate mousse, mango mousse, and princess. Now I'm sure there are more than 10 flavors but I figure asking for a cake with a tier for each of their flavors will seem excessive. Ten just sounds justifiable.

Back to the fake wedding planning. I would order the cake from Schubert's, stuff all the fake wedding guests all to the brim with the actual dinner so that people just can't stomach another bite and leave early, wait 6 hours after dinner to serve the cake so the remaining people think there isn't cake, and then voila, 10-layer cake is all to myself.

Now I realize that you may be thinking that perhaps I'll be sick of cake after finishing off 2 layers. That you're wrong because with Schubert's cakes - any of their cake flavors - I'll make room. I will starve for 5 days if that's what it takes. I will run...err walk slowly...a marathon. There is no such thing as too much Schubert's just as there is no such thing as too many pairs of shoes for women. And because their cakes don't taste too sweet - just the right amount of sweetness - I won't have to worry about popping diabetic medication to go through the wedding cake.

Schubert's is also kind enough to realize such a plan may not work for every cake lover so instead, it also makes miniature sizes of its cakes. Prices are reasonable, which makes any plot to cake hog more viable. Remember this place is on Clement and 6th Street so you'll have to be mentally prepared for parking to get in between you and their cakes.

My husband and I went to one and only one cake tasting for our wedding, and it was at Schubert's.  All the cake flavors we tried there were delicious, and their prices are reasonable compared to the multitude of SF boutique wedding cakeries out there.  Also, I strive to support local business and as a resident of the Inner Richmond I was happy to go to them!

For the actual wedding, the cake was absolutely delicious (we had two flavors, chocolate truffle in the main/display cake and their signature "princess" white cake in the sheet cake) and we received many compliments.  However, as a picky bride, I must explain that Schubert's lost a star because my instructions were for them to make the decoration on the cake "red" (not sure what would be confusing about that) to match our wedding colors and instead the cake ended up being decorate with a bright blue (robin's egg blue) band around each tier.  Obviously it didn't ruin my wedding or anything, but I thought that the random color choice was odd and no where in the instructions did it say anything about blue.

So!  I highly recommend Schubert's for their tasty wedding cake, but please be very clear with your cake order if you want a specific color or decoration.

So since my last review, Schubert's Bakery has contacted me to apologize.  They have made an effort to find out what I felt they could have done better and so for that, I will up my rating to 4 stars.  I do appreciate a business that is trying to improve itself.

In summary, they agreed that they should have contacted me about the change to the pink ribbon and should have been upfront about using white fondant sprayed with pink, rather than pink fondant.  Communication has been great after the wedding, just wished they had made that communication effort before the wedding.

Schubert's is just simply AMAZING!  One of our favorite is the Swedish Princess!  The cakes are so moist and have so much flavor!  The blends of flavor range from raspberry to rum to chocolate!  Anything your heart's desire, Schubert's probably has it!  Can't wait to go there again!

4.5 stars. Delicious cakes!!

Was planning to use them for my wedding cake but I contacted them too late because they already have too many cake orders for that month.  :(  But back to the cakes - it's a solid bakery with delicious cakes at a reasonable price.  The shop can get very crowded but it's worth it for the event you are planning. The cakes are moist, soft and not too sweet - if that's what you like!

This place is awesome. Their cakes are the most beautiful and delicious that I have had. Ordered a strawberry chocolate mouse cake and it was really really good, light, and not too sweet.
Ordered a mango mousse cake for pick up tomorrow, looking forward to it!  They are more on the expensive side, so I would consider this a special occasion cake place for like bdays and anniversaries.

They also sell small slices of their delectables along with cookies, coffee, etc and they have a few tables. Good place to grab a quick snack and coffee.

The ultimate bakery in SF.  I swing by to buy a birthday cake... and end up buying 3 additional items for moi.  You definitely get what you pay for!
