I have been recommending Schnipper's to my friends and others since I first tasted their burgers when they first opened earlier in the year.
Now I am stuck on their Sloppy Joes!! Nobody believes me when I say their sloppy joe is the best and worth spending money on. But they soon become believers once I have them take a bite. The response is always the same, "Wow, THAT is good!!" And I simply say with a smile, "I know."
My only complaint is that I have to drive all the way to the city to eat at this quality restaurant, but it's well worth it.
Everything is always hot and fresh and I hope that never changes.
Thanks for the good eats!!
Oh, I went there less than 2 weeks ago and discovered they changed their fries. They aren't as great as the original fries, but they still taste good since you get them popping hot and crispy.
Although I do not like saying your name, I cannot deny your excellence...
Located inside the NY Times Building, across from the Port Authority, on a huge corner piece property where you have the option to eat outside and watch everyone in a hurry to go no where...
I try to limit the amount of public bathrooms I use but since i had to wash my hands I visited... The bathrooms require your receipt code to enter BRILLIANT. Super clean obviously...
There is anything you can think of on the menu along with glasses of wine and liquor... think a fancy Wendy's with a stocked up bar and pitcher of beer specials all day (11-7pm)
The cheese fries aren't worth it get plain, too much cheese, and a dollar extra for nothing... Order the Mac n Joe.. half macaroni and cheese and half sloppy Joe with a lil crunch of breadcrumb on top (2 people could easily eat this all for $6.50 and order one soda and share to get unlimited refills since you fill it up yourself - WA LA cheap date great food)
Overall the sloppy Joe sandwich itself was okay, I had a bite of it and I rather just have the sloppy Joe laid out for me, but maybe i just didn't like the bread (which coming from an Italian bread girl should mean a lot)...
Definitely worth a visit... especially since you may see me here :-)
Went here today after seeing the Bobby Flay throwdown they did at oh...3 am in the morning.
See, it's the same way infomercials work. They get you when you're tired and vulnerable and make you think you want that swiss army hacksaw with carrying case and free trial of Proactiv.
Anyway, I turned the TV off before it finished. Since I wasn't going to make it to Chicago any time soon for the Mac and Cheese in the episode before it I decided to run (ok, walk briskly) over for lunch.
I chose the sloppy fries and a salted caramel milkshake.
The sloppy joe mix on the fries was good. I mean, I would have been happy with Manwich too. It wasn't so far from that canned mixture at any rate.
The milkshake is still sitting on my desk taunting me with its salty, cloying sweetness. It was not so good. The salt was there, definitely, but it's too sweet and the caramel flavor I was looking for is sorely lacking.
Sure there was a tan drizzle of the stuff on the side of the plastic cup, but it came from a jumbo sized syrup container that coffeehouses use to flavor their brew. Meh.
I had occassion to go to Schnippers about 2 weeks ago. I recognized the place after seeing it depicted on a throwdown with Bobby Flay, who actually found the self discipline to avoid including "blue corn" in anything he competited with. I digress, what I had at Schnippers was a poblano cheeseburger cooked medium rare. It was an out of body experience, the kind of burger that melted in your mouth, it need nothing and was cooked perfectly. The accompanyment of perfectly roasted poblanos was pulled off impeccably. My kudos to you!
The burgers here ain't bad. Just a little small-ish and rather generic tasting. Not sure if they use frozen patties or not, but I wouldn't be surprised. The fries are pretty generic too, but hey, when they're fresh out of the fryer, I don't complain. Qualms with the cheese they put on anything cheese fries; it's really just the cheddar cheese you find on the mac and cheese. It's not bad, but it's not meant to be.
I do however, love the space at Schnipper's. Located in the TimesCenter, there's plenty of seating, a rarity in NYC, and big groups are easily accommodated. The signs on Schnipper's walls say they recently opened in 2009. There's so much potential here. The service and decor are already good, just bump up the tastiness of the food (aka give me some Shake Shack quality!)
With a growing gambling debt to the mafia and a condo in foreclosure, Hamburger Helper was desperate. HJ's weren't paying the bills either. At an all time low, he climbed the NY Times building and was about to jump off, when in a reflection of a window he saw a "Restaurant Space For Lease" sign.
Some short time later, Hamburger "Schnipper" Helper opened up his own business.
The Sloppy Joes were crap. Starting with the tiny airy bun, it is impossible to hold the sandwich in your hands. With the amount of meat you get, you need a big piece of bread to scoop everything up.
The Sloppy Joe mix resembled a dry version of hamburger helper. Mediocre flavor and taste that's definitely lacking.
The prices are outrageous, but understandably so, considering location and his debts.
I am just glad our friend is on the road to recovery. I hear the Hamburglar is thinking of opening up an additional location on the other side of town.
Sure, they're a bit pricey, but given the lack of options in the area between and surrounding Port Authority and Penn Station, Schnipper's has become my go-to spot for quick and easy meals.
Their veggie burger is a standard veggie patty served up on some REALLY good bread with an okay special sauce. The chopped salad, cheese fries, and homemade chips are perfect sides (the cheese fries are topped with a tasty cheddar white sauce -- not that fakey neon crap). But the mac 'n' cheese needs to be completely scrapped or re-conceived (it's wet and over cooked -- blech!).
The real vegetarian find at Schnipper's, though? Order a Green Chile Cheeseburger, asking them to replace the beef burger with the veggie patty. Mmmmm... roasted poblanos, cheddar, and that special sauce. Let me repeat that: mmmmm...
They've also got a great (huge) dining area, which makes it a great place to meet people before or after a movie on 42nd Street, and plenty of drink options of the beer, soda, and milkshake varieties (I usually take a Boylan's soda, myself).
If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a stop.
The sloppy fries were exactly as advertised. It was a messy greasy glob of heart-clogging awesomeness drenched in a creamy oozing cheese and one of the better ground meat concoctions I've ever had on fries.
The Schnipper's classic burger tries to be a little more refined than your average fast food burger (an attempt to justify its 9 dollar price tag), with a "special cheese blend," caramelized onions, and arugula, which were all serviceable additions. Although the Schnipper sauce was relatively bland and sparsely applied, the bacon on the burger was tasty crunchy pork goodness, saving the burger from a complete FAIL. The big problem lay in the patty. Where I like a juicy, medium rare patty bursting with fat and flavor, Schnippers threw in a dry, overcooked lean slab of meat. I expect a little more from a 9 dollar burger.
Dessert was the best part of the meal, served in the form of eye candy. On my way out, I caught a glimpse of Nathan Lane. Well, more of a double-take and stare than a glimpse, which garnered a "I-feel-awkward -cause-you're-staring-at-me" look from him. But hey, it was worth it, 'cause oh boy, what a talented sizzling stud! What a cutie with those big round cheeks! "Teddy bear huggable" defined. And that voice! I wish he could sing me to sleep every night...
My friends and I fondly refer to this diner as "Upscale Johnny Rockets" because Schnipper's Quality Kitchen is probably the worst moniker one could invent for this clean and shiny locale across from Port Authority. This is my second favorite "I'm trapped in Times Square and must eat before the show" place to go with friends.
Their burgers are surprisingly delicious, but aren't exactly memorable (I recommend the classic). I'm a huge fan of their sloppy joe/mac & cheese combo. This is so rich and filling, I suggest sharing with another person, not that you won't be tempted to enjoy every spoonful of this cheesy, gooey deliciousness by yourself. The sweet potato fries are deliciously crisp and served with a maple dipping sauce. And for those of you who prefer greenery while your friends are clogging their arteries with cheese fries and the like, their salads are actually quite good. I typically share the chopped market salad when I come here, because not only is it delicious, it is nutritious.
Upscale Johnny Rockets also serves a delicious variety of shakes (Chocolate Malt! Salted Caramel! Peanut Butter Chocolate!) and a decent selection of beers (Magic Hat #9!) and wine. And sweet tea... mmmm.
The lighting is BRIGHT, but the seating is good. They have ample indoor and outdoor seating for all sizes of parties. The wait for food isn't long either. Even with the worst name ever, give this place a chance.
You like grease? Schnippers
You like good buns on yr burger? Schnippers
You're stuck at Port Authority and don't wanna eat rubber pizza? Schnippers
You like onion rings made of actual onions instead of onion powder and starch? Schnippers
I've only eaten Vegetarian items here, but I've been really happy. Friends have had turkey burgers and fried chicken wing things and have been smiling. Just want a snack? Try their homemade potato chips. So crunchy your ears will bleed.
Went here for a weekday lunch and got the fish tacos. Disclaimer: I'm picky when it comes to fish and tacos, especially when combined.. you'll impress me if you can top the ones in CA. But OK, this is not a place that claims to have a spectacular fish taco. That said, it was pretty decent.. so props.
And pretty good space for a large group, and serves beer.. great for a I-need-a-breather-from-work lunch spot. Definitely wouldn't mind hitting it up again and trying something else from their wide-variety menu.
This is a place to eat your feelings during a hard workday, and is reliably filled with people doing the same thing. Yes, it's overpriced, but it's one of the best options in the few blocks nearby. Salted caramel shake, I would eat you for breakfast. Sweet potato fries? Delicious. Even the salads are good. Sloppy mac & cheese is good but a once a year kind of food.
And I love the signature burger--cheese, arugula (awesome on a burger), and caramelized onions. Infinitely better than stupid 5 Napkin Burger. What is it people like about that place anyway?
Now that Schnipper's serves beer and wine, even better. That and Boylan's creamy red birth beer. Oh, and the floats. It's kind of embarrassing how many things I have tried at Schnipper's.
I finally stopped by Schnipper's while hanging out around this awful part of the city.
As I approached the New York Times building, which is where the kitchen is located, I saw a line pretty much out the door. Annoyed I waited on this line and surprisingly it moved very fast.
I tried their sloppy fries which were cheese fries smothered in sloppy joe meat on top. The cheese was cheesy, the joe was sloppy, and the fries were friey. So I was in artery clogging heaven.
Next up was a great BLT on a sourdough roll. Seriously one of the more memorable BLT experience in my BLT loving life. The B was crisp, as was the L, and the T...oh the T was fresh and delicious. I also liked the little topping of mayo.
Finally I tried their grilled chicken tacos. You get two decent sized soft shell tacos that are packed with such goodness as shredded romaine lettuce, green onions, cheddar, guacamole, chipotle dressing. Tacotacular.
So the food gets a solid 3 stars IMO. Good...not great. Schnipper's loses 2 stars for the long wait and the prices being a tad expensive for certain items. A $3.50 hot dog? $3.99 if you want sauerkraut? Really? I know rent is expensive guys, but come on...my weiner pricing limit peaks at $2.50.
I was fairly excited about trying out Schnipper's. I had seen the owners on The Food Network and their Sloppy Joe looked amazing. And I heard that their burgers were really good too.
Unfortunately this did not pan out as I hoped it would. First of all, the burger was rather dry. I asked for medium well and I ended up with well done. I asked for no pickles or tomatoes and ended up with both. And why it costs almost $8 is beyond me.
The fries were also not that great. They were overly cooked so they were super hard. Plus it didn't have any salt, which made it really plain tasting. All the catsup ( yes I wrote catsup) didn't help at all.
Now let's talk about the chocolate shake. First of all, it was $6. Look at the picture I uploaded. That's a small-ass plastic cup, ain't it? Damn straight it is. And you're telling me that chocolate syrup mixed with ice cream in that small cup is worth $6? I think not. Granted, it was rather delicious and it was perfect on a hot and humid day like today. But still - six dollars? I would rather have a $5 shake from Jack Rabbit Slim's, since it is highly recommended by Vincent Vega himself (and yes, I am watching Pulp Fiction on AMC).
All in all, this was a total letdown. And I was coming straight from a showing of "GI Joe" so I really needed something to cheer me up.
Oh wellz...
Had the sloppy joe and sloppy fries. Both was ALRIGHT, it didnt wake up my delicious taste buds, It definitely was missing something.
im glad that bobby flay beat them if he didnt, boy, that must mean flay's cooking must be sorry. just wanted to try them out since they were good enough for flay to challenge them...
It is too expensive for what you get. Sloppy Joe was okie dokie OK
But not amazing. Same for mac and Joe.
I was hoping for more since the Throwdown with Bobby Flay was fun to watch.
I went to Schnipper's on my last day in NYC. I needed something quick and close by, and I had heard that Bobby Flay had just done a recent Throw Down with these guys on Food Network for their Sloppy Joes.
Reading the Yelp reviews, I was convinced that I needed to try the Mac n' Joe. I also threw in a grilled dog for kicks. The Mac n' Joe was good, I think I just wasn't that excited about the flavor of their Sloppy Joe mix. I guess I'm just more traditional when it comes to Joe, which means no bell peppers!
Other than that, it was your typical burger and fries joint. A-Ok.
...BTW, Bobby won that Sloppy Joe throw down... maybe I'm not alone in my opinion?
stoped by one day for a sloppy joes after watching the bobby flays episode of show down. It was alright, pretty decent and cheap.
I went here maybe three or so weeks ago because I heard about the sloppy joe on some foodie show.
I ordered the sloppy joe, a chopped side salad and a soft drink. It was good. However, the sloppy joe wasn't as good as the one my mom used to make. (Yes, you're all judged based on my mom's cooking...deal with it.) However, it's good enough that should I get a craving for a sloppy joe and I have no desire to make it, I'll take a trip down to the Port Authority.
The menu has tons of options from some healthy choices like tuna salad sandwiches, some good main dish and side salads (but remember salads can get unhealthy real fast depending on what's on it), and, the draw, the classic American comfort food: sloppy joes, burgers, hot dogs, mac & cheese and fried stuff.
It's got a wide open and clean cafeteria feel about it. The people who worked there were friendly and, since it's tourist central, that comes in handy.
I'll go back for sure.
It's HOT. It's HUMID. It's Summer. I NEEDED a SHAKE.
I yelped Milkshakes near my hotel and found this place. I had passed it earlier in the day and new that it was a short walk up 8th Ave. As I walked closer, I wanted the shake more.
+ No line
+ I asked them for a special request that was not on the menu and they obliged.
+ The shake was cold and just the right consistency.
- $7.07 for a Vanilla Peanut Butter Shake (less than 16 oz. I think it was 12 oz.)
- I watched them make the shake and could not believe that it took 2 people 10 minutes to make 1 shake
= I enjoyed the shake, for what it was, but I will probably not go back for another.
If you coming in or out of Port Authority this place is right across the street.
My favorite Peanut Butter Shake is served at Orr's Drive In located in Byesville, Ohio. I have searched all over the US for something that compares and it's just to hard to beat an Orr's shake.
Meh.
It's okay...at best.
The people who work here are very courteous and make the waiting and the choosing easy to withstand. That is about where the quality ends.
I enjoyed the fact that I was able to get a burger that is made to order. I was even more excited about the fact that they didn't flinch when I said that I wanted my burger cooked Medium. It wasn't Medium...it wasn't even Medium-Well. It was a solid Well-Done burger. Not unlike anything I could have gotten down the street at Burger King--for a fraction of the price, I might add. The fries were okay...but nothing too great to provide a need to return any time soon.
I was hoping for a little bit more...but wasn't impressed with what I found. Sure, it's an easy place to go for lunch during the work day...but it could be better...especially for the COST!
Checked out Schnipper's Quality Kitchen with some friends from work. They all ordered the right stuff, Sloppy Joes and mac and cheese, I ordered Asian Chicken Salad in an attempt to be good. I felt like it was the wrong thing to order as I was razzed for being so healthy, but now that I am back in the office, I am glad I had a light salad instead of the heavy dishes they ordered. I regret not ordering now that I am Yelping because it really isn't fair to review this place based on a Chicken Salad. Ok, enough Flip Flopping.
Needless to say, the Asian Chicken salad was unique as far as these things go (there's noting worse than a place putting some Chinese noodles and chicken on iceberg lettuce and calling it Asian Chicken Salad). I liked the croutons, the chicken was seasoned nicely, the dressing was not overpowering and the edamame was a nice touch. Tofu did nothing for me.
My friend was impressed with the Sloppy Joe because "it didn't get too sloppy." "It was sweet, tomatoey and had a little bit of a kick to it."
All the food that was coming out looked really good, and I was impressed with the fast service.
Schnipper's is in an expensive and expansive space. They picked a good location, it works for the NYTimes building lunch crowd in the up-and-coming Port Authority area and it will also be a perfect place late night munchies for those waiting for their bus back to Jersey at the Port Authority across the street.
All in all, I am not in the neighborhood much and wouldn't travel back for it, but If I happen to be at a meeting with the NYTimes, I would... ( I was about to say I would go back) actually stick with the NYTimes cafeteria (their Cafeteria is by the the same folks that do the Condé Nast Cafeteria).
I don't have any complaints about the food here. My boyfriend enjoyed his burger, the mac and joe was interesting, and the salted caramel shake we shared was sinfully rich and delicious. The prices were a little ridiculous though. My boyfriend's burger was $9 and that didn't include fries. The shake itself was $6. The mac and joe was $7.
Maybe they had to inflate their prices to pay the rent? I'm not sure, but we had a cheaper (and better) burger and shake at the Shake Shack stand... in Citi Field.
Color me surprised! I had a craving for a Johnny Rockets burger today (I know, no idea either) and ended up reading reviews for Schnippers. i went around 3 o'clock, there was no wait. and ordered the burger with grilled poblanos and their special blend of cheeses. I had the choice of medium or well done, I'm usually a rare food snob but lately have been ordering burgers medium to get a bit more love out of them. Overall I thought the burger was terrific. Decent bun, really good searing on the top and bottom and the peppers were really flavorfull.
The fries weren't my thing at all. Nice outdoor seating area and a very clean interior. I'll definitely be back for a quick burger again.
I'm rarely in this part of town but it's probably for the best since the arrival of Schnipper's. After catching a new play in previews at nearby Theatre Row Studios, we found ourselves in neon-lit chain restaurant flagship hell. My cousin suggested a modern diner with really great burgers so off we went.
The price for a meal isn't too bad if you get one or two items. The problem is I wanted everything. I settled on a bacon cheeseburger which they cooked properly to a medium. It wasn't sloppy or greasy like Shake Shack which is nice sometimes. The burger is reminiscent of In-n-Out's.
The jewel of this diner is the Mac and Joe. Mac n cheese served on a bed of sloppy joe. My prayers have been answered. So simple yet so tasty. The ingredients here are fresh and nothing was greasy. I also had some sloppy fries which are covered in cheese and sloppy joe. Schnipper's comfort food hits the spot.
$9 fish tacos seemed to catch my eye, though it was a lighter choice than most of what they had on the menu. Something told my stomach to order it rather than a sloppy Joe. I guess it was a wise decision in retrospect. The other reviews of the fish taco here aren't good. My impressions of it though weren't that that bad. The mahi is a great fish, and it tasted pretty good I must say. I did enjoy it, and with all the lime I squeezed on it, it became a sloppy Joe for me too.
There was a girl from Macon, who liked her bacon.......reads the large posting on the wall. Well, there is no girl from Macon just a concocted idea of an old school comfort restuarant. The place itself is well thought out with ordering stations and picking up stations complete with buzzers.
The quality of the food is an absolute mystery as the desciptions sound so enticing. I ordered a half mac and joe. So half mac and cheese and half sloppy joe plus onion rings. Approx $11 bangers. I would have ordered a salted caramel milk shake, but when I looked at the ice-cream(Giffords), this food bitch, declined.
The food itself is freshly made, though the recipes taste like something out of a 1950's cook book. Mushy mac and cheese with a sprinkling of flavorless bread crumbs on top. The joe wasn't bad and it all tasted better reheated later. The onion rings were super tasty though something tells me this is a processed bread crumb mix. You need a combo for the toilet which is on your printed receipt. (Clever).
We stopped in around 10pm after a touristy night on the town. We decided to sample a little of everything when we got there. They prepare everything made to order, which was really impressive since we ordered fish & chips and they coated and battered the fish right in front of us. I didn't try the fish but everybody raved that it was excellent. I tried the following:
Chocolate peanut butter shake - Excellent, made with real peanut butter and the cup was coated with a little chocolate syrup. They only have one size which was just perfect
French Fries-Really good, I don't like crispy fries and these were almost just right.
Schnipper Classic Burger - came with carmelized onions, cheese, schipper sauce, the works. Was really good almost as good as In-N-Out. They don't freeze their meat so it tasted really fresh.
Mac & Cheese - The guy who took our order said it was excellent. But I strongly disagree. It tasted like terrible. My girlfriend makes better mac & cheese with her eyes closed.
Vanilla shake - It was just as perfect as the Chocolate peanut butter shake.
Onion Rings - Perfect size cut and really good batter. Nothing like fresh onion rings.
Definitely recommend for those looking for a quality burger and fries with nice shake for dessert!
Seriously, if I worked closer to Schnipper's I'd be there almost every day. I'm a huge fan of their salads, which are very reasonably priced compared to some of the places in the area. The service is always friendly and the environment lives up to its name, looking like a bright, welcoming kitchen right out of a 50's movie.
The dishes I have most often are the salads, the most amazing of which is their goat cheese and beet salad. The vinaigrette on the salad rocks, and the combination of goat cheese, beets, green onions and greens is amazing. I loved this salad so much I replicated a version of it at home! Also try their sloppy joes with mac n' cheese, which is an awesome experience.
The service is always quick and efficient. The two times I did have an error in my order, the folks behind the counter made it a point to give me something extra to make up for it (extra cheese, free chicken etc.) so service is clearly something they value.
While not the cheapest place in the city, it's fairly priced (especially for the area) and a comfortable, clean environment. Recommended!
I was very excited when I heard that Schnipper's was opening - I had high hopes of a new favorite Times Square eatery. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed.
The first time I went, I was disappointed. The mac and cheese was not so good. Something was just not quite right, but I can't really pinpoint what about it bothered me. My friend seemed to like his burger, so maybe those are better? The sweet potato fries were delicious though. The high point of the meal, which is kind of sad. I went back another night to see if the first time was a fluke, and ordered the fish tacos. Again, nothing amazing.
So, Schnipper's has not risen to the challenge of being my new Time Square dinner spot. I probably won't be back.
I've been here a couple of times and like it pretty well. I've had a burger with a side of mac and cheese, which is a very filling dinner. Those two things come to about $11, which is a little high for a fast-food place of sorts, in my opinion. Still, I will probably come here regularly since it's less than a block from my school. Friends of mine have had the sweet potato fries w/ maple sauce and also the sloppy joe, both of which I have tasted and both of which are BANGIN! Sloppy joe is a little, well, sloppy, so it's best to eat with a fork and knife. Seating is plenty with outside seating as well. I would like it if they had wifi - it seems like the kind of place that would. They also serve drinks, though I had a plastic cup of Sierra Nevada for $6. That seemed a little steep, too, though admittedly, I'm not completely familiar with New York prices yet. Decent beer selection as well as white and red wine. Definitely worth a try.
Last note - do not throw your receipt away! You need a code to use the bathrooms and it's posted on the bottom of the receipt. If memory serves, it's usually 2525, subject to change of course.
The people in my office just LOVE Schnipper's so I thought I would go for lunch with an open mind and not try to be put off by the cute name or the horrific appearance. The style is trying, on one hand, to evoke something that most of the patrons' PARENTS don't even remember, while at the same time going for a stark, uncluttered, bleak, scary feel that young people seem to think is compatible with the New Fascism or something. To me it looks like the secret police have moved into an abandoned dairy to use for a temporary headquarters. I can almost hear echoes of those screaming from torture, but no, we're across the street from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. But talk about torture, there is an outdoor seating area on the corner, directly across the street from a construction site. They actually have signs that demand that Schnipper's customers only sit there. They may as well have signs that prohibit anyone but the insane from sitting there, because the only people who could sit in that environment would have to be insane. But maybe the construction, the heat, the exhaust and car horns, the traffic from the Port Authority, the people handing out flyers on the sidewalk don't irritate you. To be honest, they don't irritate me as much as the name Schnipper's. And that wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't followed by "Quality Kitchen."
I am so sick of hearing my co-workers talk about Mac 'n' Cheese Mac 'n' Cheese Mac 'n' Cheese that the next time someone says Mac 'n' Cheese I'm going to push their face into a plate of the offending mess until they say "macaroni." What is even worse, unfortunately, people who LOVE this place go: Mac 'n' Joe Mac 'n' Joe Mac 'n' Joe, which to me is more annoying yet. Okay, I understand the idea of comfort food, and retro food, and heart attack food, and food that says, "We don't care, we're young!" and food that says, "I remember the good ole days." But this place seems to be trying to do it all at once: to cover all the bases, including soccer. It's like they're trying to be the Cheesecake Factory for thin people.
Maybe I'm being overly harsh because of my being put off by the image of the place. Maybe I should just close my eyes and eat. So I put on my dark glasses and my most summertime hangover and stumbled in for later breakfast around 2 pm, and I ordered a cheeseburger. Simple, nothing else, but a cheeseburger and water. A couple of cheeseburgers and a couple of beers later, my hangover was miraculously gone and I was ready for work.
At first glance, I rolled my eyes and said, "Seriously? We're in New York and we're eating at a Johnny Rocket's rip off?"
Wrong.
I was surprised at how many vegetarian options there were. They had a list of salads that went far beyond iceberg and little carrots shreds. We're talkin' goat cheese, mixed greens, beets, figs, blue cheese, roasted walnuts... AND 2 veggie sando options.
The sides kinda rocked, too. Sweet potato fries (I'm in love), giant onion rings, mini side salads, mac and cheese and all sorts of meaty Sloppy Joe fixins.
Any place where I can pull off healthy vegetarian eating while my boyfriend scores a fork and knife cheesy, messy, meaty somethin'-or-other, is a winner in our book.
There's more: A giant outdoor eating area that was WAY cleaner than most places in Times Square. A condiment station complete with good mustard, and oil and balsamic vinegar, and super swift lines with friendly staff.
One of the best burgers around. Price is very reasonable. Highly recommend!
It's a bit pricey but the food ain't bad. I got the cheapest burger the first time and it was totally fine. The second time I got the mac&joe...really filling. Really tasty.
Expensive lunch, but it sure does look cool.
I finally went in to Schnipper's for the first time since it opened. The space itself is really nice and clean with lovely signs and typography that makes it seem like the Times Square version of a burger joint that it is.
I went for the signature Schnipper's burger and sweet potato fries with some Boylan's root beer. It definitely tasted like I wanted it to, like the best food on the side of a dusty old road as you drive cross country (and I mean that in a good way) but $16 for lunch means that I won't go as often as I'd like, even if it is conveniently located downstairs.
The Signature Burger ($7+) was topped with American cheese, "Schnipper's Sauce", Arugula and Caramelized Onions and was quite good. Nicely grilled and very juicy. Not as nice as Five Napkin Burger but well worth having. It doesn't include any sides at that price so the Fries cost me another $3-4 and then an additional $2 for a soda and tax.
Ultimately, it's more like a cleaner looking version of Trailer Park at 23rd and 8th but twice the price.
I'm willing to try a place once and my first order I got was the fish tacos. Emma C. I don't know if your taste buds are different than mine but it was completely awful! The double tortillas were dry, the fish had no flavor, the pico de gallo wasn't even spicy, and to top it all off, 2 tacos cost $9.00!!! If my Mexican friends found out I paid 9 bux for 2 tacos, they'd kill me. I've eaten authentic Mexican food and can cook it myself so I can say the tacos sucked ass.
I don't think I would come here and try the burgers, sloppy joes, salads and hotdogs. I looked at people's meals and it wasn't anything spectacular. You want burgers, go to 5 Guys - you want fries, go to 5 Guys!!! You want sloppy joes, buy 1 lb of ground beef and open a can of Manwich mix...it'd feed your whole family and not break your wallet.
The 2 stars are for the ample amount of seating and open-decor.
Cool diner in the middle of mid town. Fires, burgers, mac n cheese and some salads build an easy going menu for fast lunch.
The blue cheesburger is really amazing and I found myself ordering another one.
If you are between meetings, this is a great place to stop by.
Nice job on the burgers! They cook everything to order so it's not the quickest but, seriously, it's the best fast food burger I've ever devoured save that at West Coast's In-N-Out chain. If only such a burger could be had at one of the neighborhood watering holes after midnight.
I went to have lunch after standing out in the freezing cold for 2+ hours waiting for a job fair (if you watch ABC 7, you might know what I'm talking about). I pass by this place on the mornings when I come into work, since it's right across from the Port Authority, so I figured I'd give it a try.
I figured since this looked like a more "upscale" - and I say that with little conviction - version of Cali's In-n-Out mixed with a spartan retro-ish diner, I'd order the classic cheeseburger and fries. There's definitely more time put into cooking the patties than you would find in your typical fast food joint, namely because they've got the huge grills going right behind the glass pane on the counter (which by the way, look like diner stools). The fries were made in the typical oil fryer, and kept hot by heat lamps. With all-glass walls and lots of white everywhere, the place is very bright and well-lit. It doesn't exactly evoke the traditional diner experience, but hey, it's New York - it'll get dirty soon enough.
The burger was ok: relatively thin patty (thicker than the chain fast foods, but thinner than someplace that serves "gourmet" (I sneer at that term) burgers. I was kind of hoping they would ask how I wanted the patty cooked, since I prefer mine a little bit rare, but I suppose they're keeping things safe while they're still new. It was kind of on the salty end, but with the lettuce/tomato/pickle, it tempered out well enough. The fries were better than most of what you would normally see: hot and crispy, though the potato inside was pretty much fried away, leaving just a shell. I wonder if they'll go down the Nathan's path and provide malt vinegar? We'll see.
The price is definitely over that of a fast food joint, though considering it's near Times Square, I suppose I can't complain too much. Still, $11+ for a cheeseburger and fries is a little much. Basically, this place is good if you want a better burger than fast food, but don't want to pay a ridiculously exorbitant amount. It would be good post-drinking food, but I'm not sure how late this place is open.
Next time I go, I'll get a shake to go along with the burger and see how it turns out.
