10 reviews for Schmucker's
I stopped by with a group of friends after a visit to the Botanical Gardens. I'm upset with myself that I haven't been here before. The restaurant was packed - we were there for almost two hours enjoying our lunch and even though it was way past the "lunch rush", people were still waiting to get in and seated.
I had the "Wimpy Platter" - double cheeseburger with REAL fries. It wasn't too big and the price was right. My friends opted for meals varied such as the roast beef, grilled cheese, and fish sandwich. All were happy with their meals.
And then came the pies. I needed a nap after lunch. I had the chocolate peanut butter pie. About halfway through - I had my fill, but finished it.
Open M-Sa 5a-11pm, Closed on Sundays
Wanting to contribute to the rate of obesity in Toledo and willing to risk food poisoning, a friend and I stopped by Schmucker's for an early lunch. One look at the building and you'll see the reason as to why I haven't stepped foot inside in my 100+ times of passing this diner -- until now.
First of, seating is limited to a few booths and tables, plus a few bar stools. Daily specials and featured pies are scrawled above the kitchen area. The menu is quite plain and simple in that it offers your typical diner favorites. I opted for the eggs, bacon, and pancake special while my friend decided on corned beef hash with eggs and home fries. Both orders came with complimentary coffee, which was always instantly refilled before hitting the half cup mark. How's that for stellar (and friendly) service?
Both dishes were good, although on second thought, it is quite difficult to screw up eggs, pancakes, and whatnot. However the highlight of our meal was the chocolate peanut butter pie, aka Schmucker's signature pie. One slice could easily feed two, or even three. Whipped, sugary, and rich, yet still light of a dessert, this could easily make my Top 10 list of favorite pies.
Whether you claim that Schmucker's is the place for breakfast or solely for its pies, one thing holds true: it is, without a doubt, the best 'Cheap Eat' in town. That, and the fact that you should set aside at least three hours of exercise after a slice of the infamous chocolate peanut butter pie.
If you want chocolate...go to Willy Wonka's Factory...if you want pie....really good pie....Head to Schmuckers! Heck no...she's not fancy, but she doesn't have to be...It's kinda like when you meet this really good looking person and then their partner walks up...they are nothing to look at...so ya wonder...what have they got on the inside? Yep...She is like that. Not fancy surrounding...basic tables, chairs and bar stools...but place a spoonful of pie in that cake hole and all negativity will vanish! LOL
There is something magically about ole Schmucker's...you cannot tell someone about it....they have to feel it for themselves. It is special.
Coming from CA, this was the first time I tried real midwest homestyle cooking and I was satisfied. Prices were cheap and portions were decent sized. I had some burger + fries and it was like $4-5. The burger was mediocre sized but surprisingly very clean. I usually have trouble with those ginormous burgers that come all apart but this burger was well balanced and that alone gives it 3 stars. But as the other reviews have noted, it's the pie that this place is famous for. I was recommended a chocolate and peanut butter pie (I've never had a non-fruit pie) and I was floored. I couldn't eat more than half of it but it was really really damn good and my leftovers made for a nice breakfast the next day =).
We moved from Toledo to Hawaii a couple of years ago. Schmucker's is one of the few things we regret having to leave behind (college football games in the fall and snow at winter time are the others). Schmucker's is a classic mid-western diner that has changed little since its founding in 1948. I'm not a big fan of the pies - they overdue it on the corn starch, so some of the pies are kind of rubbery, but the breakfasts are out of this world. Order the home fries with onions and eggs over easy or sunny side up. There is simply nothing like it in Hawaii.
Pie. It's all about the pie. Hefty, sloppy homemade pies with real, flaky crusts rolled out by human hands. But prep your palate a little bit first by indulging in a big, greasy cheeseburger. They do them well here. Once you've had your meat, you can turn your attention to your sweet, and I think you're probably going to want Strawberry Rhubarb. This old-style Old Country diner has been here since looooooong before the jam company in Orrville made a different variation on the name famous nationwide.
Oh my goodness you have to be careful when you order. They have this chocolate/peanut butter type pie here, a slice of that and I thought I was floating to heaven. It was a generous slice, I usually don't like to much sweets, but I ate this one until my belly ached. And it was worth it.
Very friendly service, but very limited vegetarian selections.
If you are looking for a beautiful atmosphere with fancy decor, please do not go to Schmuckers! If you are looking for a delicious meal in an interesting setting with good crowd watching head on down! Schmuckers is small and always busy. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I usually get their cheeseburger and fries and they are simple, delicious, and wonderful. I had a fried egg & sausage breakfast sandwich the last time I was there and it was oh-so-good! The pie is fresh-made and amazing; my favorite is the dutch apple with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. You can order by the slice or order a whole pie (call a day in advance, two to three days for holiday orders). My daughter & best friends' son love it here - they get free cookies with their kids meals! A fun place for kids and adults of all ages!
