Delicious sausage and beer here.

I'd give them an extra star for being a block from  my house, but that doesn't quite seem fair.  Went to Schmidt's last night with my visiting mom.  We shared a pretzel, then both had sausages and beer.

The beer selection is great - the perfect complement to the choice of meats.  The waitress was very knowledgeable about which beer would be best with my meal.  My bratwurst was delicious and the potato salad was perfectly German (judging by my limited German potato salad in America experience).  Also - the spatzle was GREAT (it will be my new favorite comfort food).

Sure, there are other great sausage places in the city - I'm a fan of Rosamunde's too.  But, if you want a nice, clean place for a sit down meal (with super friendly service) - check out Schmidt's.  A very good place for visiting 'rents - this one also got the "mom approved" seal.

First time in to Schmidt's today... may become a regular spot in my rotation.

The Schnitzel sandwich (got to add the fried egg!) was excellent.  It comes with a nice little side of green salad, but my recommendation is to go full bore and add in a side of their spätzle.  Ausgezeichnet!!  ("Excellent" for you the non-Germanic audience)

Impressive draft bier selection as well, although I stuck with the Reidorf Kölsch.  Crisp and fresh!  And tons of add'l biers via their bottle selection.

I will definitely be back to explore more of the menu, as well as roll through for dinner.  Vielen Dank, Schmidt's!!

You Rock Schmidt's!!!

The food is real!  Tastes like heaven.

The beer... I believe one of the largest selections of real german brew in town.  In bottle or draft.  If you order draft Schmidt's uses real german crystal beer mugs or tall or short gold rimmed beer glasses.

The place... Feels like germany.  I like that a lot.  Earthy wood tones, minimal, some flowers on some tables.  Just the right touch of decor presentation.

The location...  In the Heart of San Francisco's  Art District.

Thank you so much Schmidt's.  I wish you all the best luck in the future you guys deliver love on a plate and cool beer mug. XXXOX!

Wanted to try this restaurant as previously visited Waltzwerk, always good. Beware: noise level extreme, but still able to converse across the table. Great selection of beers and waitress very helpful explaining differences. Good menu with nothing fancy or "designer" appearance. Good selection of sausages, try the Wild Boar. Good sauerkraut, but very disappointed in the potato salad. Usually German potato salad is made with oil/vinigar, bacon and slightly warm. This was made with mayonaise and far too heavy. Very, very long wait for dessert, even though apple strudel was sitting on counter.
Overall, for the price and quality of food, wonderful and worth a repeat, but service and kitchen needs better timing in serving the waiting crowd.

The lunch menu is small and standard, but delicious and hits the spot when your needing your German food fix.  I ordered the sausage with potato salad and sauerkraut--delicious.  There are 8 kinds of sausage to choose from and the staff was helpful in making recommendations.  My husband had the schnitzel sandwich with egg  and a salad, just the right amount of food.  Great service-- cool, yet friendly.  We went with our one year old daughter, and we were happily surprised to find that they had a high chair!  I would have given them five stars except I thought the menu a bit too small (for lunch anyway).  Will definitely go back for dinner when we get a sitter.

I love this place. Amazing beer list and the food is really authentic and deliciously prepared. This is a great place if you have a hangover! Beer, sausage and potato salad mmm... And the spetzle is incredible. I've had weiner snitzle many times in switzerland and this brought it right back. I cant believe people are complaining about the prices, I thought $10 for my dish was VERY reasonable and had the opposite reaction (to those saying it is overpriced). I feel that way all the time in SF, like at Slow club recently but not here at all....  I also really like this part of the mission (my newish hood so i'm a little biased:)) away from delfinas and tartine et al , thank god a new area is taking hold!

I was shaking in my boots for your two-tone hair. I know you heard me, too. It's not that I think your sausage particularly well cooked, or your spaetzle altogether neat. It's not that I find your foot stools particularly satisfying, or your tables sufficiently square. Your walls are over the hill, and the door only opens when my frame gets turned to its thin end. But I'm here. I'm sitting in my corner and staring across the room at you. You with the ruffles in skirts and legs shorn of their winter's earth. You with the lashes that flutter, thick and lathered black. You leaned over to laugh at a joke that day, throwing about the flesh of a wicked spell. I bought an extra beer, not the intent. Well played, waitress with the heavy accent.

I was so disappointed with their Zwiebelkuchen.....So different from what I used to eat in Germany.....The Schnitzel comes with sunny side egg and herrings....Never seen that in Germany neither. Maybe this variation does exist but I guess it does only in the northeast.....
I would not come back again. Having lived in Germany's Southwest and in Austria, I might not be impressed easilly but I still like Suppenkueche a lot!  Schnitzelhaus is also good for Schnitzeln and Rosamunde for Wuerste.....

The east side of the Mission is getting pimped out. First Flour + Water (delicious!) shows up, now we have some mod German fare to match its sister, nearby Walzwerk.

So yeah, it's incredibly German in here. That means the food is hearty, good, meat-heavy, and unhealthy. Do the German snacks and condiments for sale make up for it? Probably not, but it's all very cute.

Prices aren't bad and food is very tasty. $10 (not including tip) will get you a schnitzel (sausage) plate with sauerkraut and potato salad. I highly recommend the meal, since it all goes really, really well together. The portions were just right, if a bit on the over-filling side if you weren't starving. $5 per beer (I went with a wee stein of helles) wasn't bad at all.

All set in a small-ish to medium space with plenty of bench seating for couples and small groups. Anything larger than four should probably call ahead.

Cash only!

Schmidt's can pimp my 'hood anytime.

Came here for lunch with the parents and wasn't all that impressed. $8 for my bratwurst, potato salad and sauerkraut....meh. The brat wasn't smokey or particularly flavorful in my opinion, the potato salad was decent, but the sauerkraut was overpowering...way too sour!!! The chocolate pudding was super chocolatey, but when you could have 90 calorie swiss miss, it didn't really justify the massive caloric intake.
I think to be fair, I'll need to come for dinner, but for lunch, I'd rather spend more and go to Suppenkuche or Schroeder's....
Cash only is also a bit of pain

Had high hopes for Schmidt's as I'm a fan of Walzwerk...

However my $8 sausage came out looking like my grandpa's dingaling after a long jacuzzi... $8 for a VERY overcooked sausage and sides of kraut and potato salad? don't think so... Rosamundes has you whooped on price-to-performance

I'll give it another try and re-rate accordingly, but the first visit does not have me aching to get back...

I visited Schmidt's today for the first time, for a late lunch. I was treating myself. Unfortunately, the restaurant was mostly deserted at that time, but I felt comfortable. The waitress was super-friendly and helpful, and she recommended the duck sausage, which is what I ordered.

The sausage came with two kinds of mustard and was quite tasty, although I expected more volume for the price of the dish ($8). I was also charged $1.50 to substitute spaetzle. I understand that may present an inconvenience to the chef in terms of timing and preparation, but I felt this fee was a bit much. Anyway. The sauerkraut was good (I'm no expert). And the spaetzle were admittedly delicious, oily (buttery?) and full of carby goodness, plus there was cheese on top. Yum.

I really wish I could award Schmidt's three and a half stars, but three will have to do, given the Yelp star rating system's restrictions. I just felt things cost too much for the relatively small portion sizes. Bummer.

I think this was my first German experience, other than that one time, at that one place, with those people..
Our food was delicious. Service was good. The lack of decorations was somehow great. I think I had a girl crush on our waitress, but that is for another time.
We will definitely be going back here (oh, and trying their sister restaurant - Walzwerk)

Best Spetzel I have had in San Francisco.  I have been here twice since they have opened and the first time it had zucchini along with the optional bacon.  That was pretty yummy.  Last  Saturday night  after baking in the sun for 5 hours for the Opera sale decided to try it again with some friends, one of whom was German.  This time they had added chanterelle mushrooms and it was out of this world good.  I got to try some of the other stuff also as we were a larger group.  The smoked boar  sausage was also very good.  I think I could pass on the brussel sprout salad though.  I will definitely be back for more.  Hopefully it won't get crazy and be impossible to get a table like most places in the mission.

Schmidt's is great. It is decidedly unpretentious, affordable, and delicious.

The beer-on-tap menu was extensive enough for this new a restaurant, having all the major bases covered.

The schnitzel choices were thorough for my non-expert liking.

The food was totally good. My kielbasa (shut it!) was served with potato salad and saurkraut. I didn't like saurkraut when I was a kid. I do after last night.

It was $10 for the schnitzel, $5 each per beer. For this quality of food and drink, it's a totally excellent deal.

The space isn't too noteworthy, but one wall just inside the front door is stocked with German food and a few trinkets.

Also, our server was totally ... well, German. She was very blasé about everything, and even rushed my friend to finish his dinner. Um, hello? Don't make me evoke WWII on your ass, fraulein. ;)

That was the only downside, and it provided comedy after the fact. Schmidt's is a very welcome addition to Mission dining.

I have had Suppenkuche on my list of restaurants to go to for a while but I happened to be in the Mission during the weekend and someone said Schmidt's is as good as or even better had opened.

Ambiance (3): The set up is extremely minimal and sparse. One wall has various german items like a market which adds some charm to the place but it could definitely use more warmth. The ATM machine in the corner definitely doesn't help.

Food (4): The menu is straightforward and a lot of the items are a sausage with potato salad and mustard on the side. I tried this pasta salad with big chunks of bacon and it was pretty tasty, but that's to be expected with mr. bacon on board. It wasn't heavy at all despite the fat component. I also had the blood sausage and it was as good as it gets. It was just like Argentine style, not too dry and just the right amount of moisture. The potato salad was good and overall the dish was straightforward and good to go. I didn't have dessert though, that will be for the next visit.

Service (3): A-ok.

Value (5): Pricing is good for what it is. If you want a simple meal and a large stein of beer, this is a good place to go. You should know not to expect anything elaborate when a lot of the dishes are in the 10 dollar range.

Overall, this place is as straightforward as can be. If you want sustenance and are fan of sausages and beer, head on over. They have a couple of large tables for big groups, but I'd call and make reservations for that.

I love good German food (OK, I love good food of almost any kind), and I love simple things done right, or things done right, simply. Or maybe it's just that things done right are often done simply. Or that it's simpler to do things right.

In any case, today was a great day for German food in my ver y particular corner of San Francisco, as I had lunch at Schmidt's and dinner with his older 'sister' Walzwerk. If you haven't been to Walzwerk (and frequently) in the last 10 years, where have you been? And since you have been there, you will have known that Dave & Kristiana have been planning a new liitle "German deli" which has now been open for a few months.

I finally stopped in today and we had a delightful tablefull of raw beet and carrot salad, marzen bratwurst, German cold cuts, and two (small, lunchtime) beers.

Great food, reasonable prices, authentic Berliner-cum-San Francisco atmosphere, friendly, tasty fare, what more do you want?

(What more did I want? I wanted a plateful of the creamed herring at Walzwerk, two more schwarzbiers and an Underberg to finish -- but that was later.)

We are from the neighborhood, and after having observed the place coming together (dark-painted exterior, simple and welcoming interior) we spontaneously dropped in after getting a call from two of our friends who were dining there.  Great place!  Welcoming, cool staff, inexpensive.

While it's been nice to see all the new businesses springing up around our house and art studio, some of them are a little....over-hyped.  This one is the kind of place we can whole-heartedly embrace.

We split wienerschnitzel and spaetzle with chanterelles -- one order each between two people.  The spaetzle was especially fab.  With draft beer -- an excellent weeknight dinner!

Damn good eating place if I do say so. Went for lunch today, and shared tasty breads, sliced meats and a glass of Bitburger. After that came the Nurnburg Mini sausages along with a brat and a grilled hot dog, just because. All were satisfying with two types of mustard.

Also had the spatzle, which was tasty in the melted cheese (gruyere?) and the schnitzel sammywhich. I want another one of those right now, with the delicious dressing and a fried egg on top (made it hard to share but my bro did what he could before just cramming most of it into his gaping maw).

Schmidt's loses a star for sauerkraut that I thought was "OK" but my peeps stopped eating it after one taste.

Had just enough room left for apple streudel, but I'm not enough of a dessert fan to really say if it great. Give it a shot, and leave time for walking off the food later!

Still CASH ONLY...be warned.  I've seen a few sourpusses get bent out of shape when the bill came.

BUT...they're now open for dinner with an expanded menu!  Woo!

The menu is still fairly simple, but every dish is intriguing and inexpensive.  And by intriguing I mean truly German.  This is food that is meant to be tasted, enjoyed, and shared.  German food, IMHO, is supposed to be simple, fresh, flavorful...celebrated.

We had three main courses, two sides, two drinks, a dessert...all for $60.  Very fair prices for the amount of food.

If you expect to be blown away by a culinary experience here, you will not find what you are looking for.  However, if you are looking for a place to meet, greet, and feel welcome, Schmidts is your place.

If you believe in good karma, optimism and the glass being half full, than you believe that disappointments exist only to lead you to something even better. Such was the case this week when a two hour wait at Flour + Water (along with just a bit of an uppity attitude from the hostess) led us to the exceptional Schmidt's.

I felt the rush of good vibes the minute I walked in. The space was excellent - rustic with a modern, candlelit edge filled with the exciting buzz of conversation. The hostess greeting me said it would be no problem getting a table, and I could even sit while waiting for my friends. While I waited for the table to be ready, I sat next to two gentleman discussing LovEvolution. They sounded like promoters, and I took the opportunity to bemoan the lack of Armin Van Buuren this year due to his wedding (an OK excuse), and I put a plug in for Above & Beyond, Ferry Corsten and/or Tiesto. If you guys are reading this - please!!!

My friends arrived shortly after and joined me at the table. Our waitress was charming and funny, clearly enjoying herself as she walked us through the menu and took our orders. The menu is focused yet diverse, with most options being a variation of sausage. My eyes and stomach quickly aligned on the smoked wild boar, which was exceptional. Complementing the sausage were a potato salad (with what seemed to be minimal mayo) and sauerkraut, both excellent. The dish was also served with spicy and sweet mustard, with the latter being outstanding. I asked for, and received, more.

We ended the meal splitting two desserts, including a chocolate pudding with vanilla sauce. We all said we were having one bite. Each of us had a few more. Total financial damage was a very, very reasonable $25.

Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely, and throughout we toasted the food, service, company and surprisingly warm evening with massive glasses of beer. Tonight those glasses weren't just half full. They were overflowing.

Been here a few times since it opened (it's around the corner from the office). Very good, very authentic German food. It's not going to be for everyone, but if you like meats and saurkraut and pickles and hot mustard then you'll be in heaven... EXCEPT that the portions are really small.

The beer selection is getting there (I love the little beer glasses, perfect for lunch). The decore could use some work (it's very s(ch)tark right now).

I only had a drink here but went with a friend who ordered dinner and a beer. My CA cabernet was yum and my friend seemed to enjoy his drink too. He ate all of his food, which I'll take as a sign that he was happy with it.

Really what strikes me as super cool about this place and a reason that makes me want to revisit it, is the layout of the inside. I love the long tables and roominess though it's not that big of a restaurant. It's got a vibe where you'd want to go with a group of people get a bunch of good beer and finger foods and play cards. They just have a friendly come hang out and be our buddies kind of environment.

Since this place is only a block from my house I'm so excited to go to it more and arranging a card/game night there. I also can't wait to start sampling there beer, seriously I'm a loon for drinking wine there last time!

Very nice hipsy location in the Miss, very clean and bare to the essential place. I like it.. it is at the same time cozy and functional... you can feel it opened since not so long.

The food.... is good. German of course, and from the German food I remember, this is quite adapted to the Californian taste.. but hey.. we are not in Hamburg :)

My friend had a Schnitzel and it was well done.. very good. Served with a fried egg and roasted cauliflower. Lemon on top.. and here you go.. perfect dinner!! The side of potatoes salad was FAB!!!

I had spaetzles with cheese and bacon!! Yumm... a very good mix of flavours and the spinach on the bottom were delish. The salad on the side also was a perfect combination :)

Delish apfel strudel to end up the dinner. Nice beer with good German selection.

At the end is not cheap.. but I was not expecting it.. so it is fine. Very bad... and I am getting more and more upset about it, they do not accept credit cards.. CASH only.... WHATEVER!!! Is it the new wave in the Mis?

O course they have an ATM machine in the restaurant.. which will charge you at least 1.5 $$!!!

Service was a bit sloppy... not sure if it is because they just open.. or something else.

Soo. good food... nice atmosphere... it is a start up... really worth going.. and if a nice evening.. the walk on Folsom is very nice :)

Schmidt's is I believe, owned by the same people who run Walzwerk (truly comfort-licious German food in the Mission). I had gone to Walzwerk a few times with my German class and my boyfriend ( who is German- are you sensing a theme yet?!) so the afternoon that my boyfriend flew back to Germany FOR GOOD after living in the U.S. for four years, I decided it was romantically fitting that I should eat some spaetzle and sip some apfelshorle while "mein freund" flew off in a silver can into the sunset.

I've hardly eaten alone before, but I felt perfectly comfortable doing so at Schmidt's. The place itself is very open and cafe like, and very low key. Aside from a wall of German food products for sale, there isn't a great deal of ethnic decor and you wouldn't even necessarily know you were in a place serving the German food.

My spaetzle with bacon was delicious and just as good as at Walzwerk. They don't have a large selection, but they also haven't been open very long so I'm sure they will add things to their menu with time. My waitress was lovely and asked if I spoke German after I pronounced "spaetzle" without an American accent. Score! Looks like over a year of German lessons are finally starting to pay off!

Oh yeah, and if you're eating "allein" such as I was, they have plenty of magazines in English and auf Deustch to preoccupy yourself.

Clean and cozy environment... compared to other German restaurants in SF I'd say it's more like Suppenküche than Walzwerk.  In any case, I had a big plate of meat with lots of fine cheeses.  I took a picture of the menu with my camera phone but it came out too blurry so unfortunately I can't tell you exactly what I had.  The food was delicious, the beer selection was great, and the service was prompt and friendly.  The only minor caveat was the acoustics of the room; lots of hard surfaces made the place a little noisy.  But all in all, a wonderful place to eat, especially if you're on a date!

I finally popped my German food virginity and it was not good for me.  Well it was decent.  Of course I had to get the veal schnitzle.  In general the sandwich was pretty bland and all I could taste was the over easy egg.

However,  I do like the modern and simple decor.  Another plus for having a nice selection of German beer on tap which comes in a nice tall glass.

Danke schön! I have been craving this restaurant for a full decade.

Specifically "German" restaurants in the Bay Area have too often been upscale affairs with prices to match. I grew up in Elderberryland, where many of these dishes were found on the menus and chalkboards of local diners near the steel mill or Farm & Feed store. Spaetzle, Schintzel (and Goulash, for that matter) were standard fare, right alongside meatloaf and BLTs.

Schmidt's perfectly combines the flavors and quality of the "upscale" spots with the affordable accessibility and congeniality of a regular hangout - further complimented by a few large communal tables in the center of the smaller ones.

The V*** Schnitzel Sandwich is heavenly, with fresh chives in the sour cream and an over-easy egg to tie it all together in a deliciously sinful mess. An absolute must, no matter what else you order, is the Spaetzle with Bacon. The texture of these tiny, eggy, dumpling-noodles is perfectly chewy without being sticky. The bacon simply puts it over the top (of the Alps!)

Don't miss dessert, either, even if it's in a to-go box. The Apple Struedel is phenomenal, with the perfect buttery, flaky crust topped with a rich vanilla bean sauce. A half dozen of Pfefferneusse (spice cookies) seem dry at first, but lends a savoriness that goes well even with the dozens of bottled beers.

Washed down with an Elderberry soda and I am in hog-heaven! The earthy elderberry is a most underrated fruit. In SF, I've found exactly two desserts with them in the same number of decades. Fortunately for me, Schmidt's sells a few products that celebrate its distinctive flavor.

Go here. Meet friends. Make friends.
To me, this place is "reiner Himmel."

I happened to find this place while i took my pups to get groomed "By George". WHat a pleasant surprise! I really didn't like feel having meat..but i was in a German restaurant...so what to do. A group came in and i overheard her saying she just had the kolrahbi/endive gratin the day before and it was delicious...BINGO! It was a large, rich creamy buttery portion of goodness next to a good sized green salad. Service was good, decent enough wine and beer list. I will definetly go back!

I have never in my life had duck sausage, but after visiting Schmidts and ordering their fowl links, which are anything but foul, I'm a huge fan.

German food has never been a priority in my dining habits, but if other German restaurants produce the food you find here, I can see why the entire country could have the capacity to be one very happy place. I've never been so satisfied with sausage, potato salad and beet salad. All were excellent, all went WONDERFULLY with the beer, and all made me a very happy customer.

Schmidts' atmosphere would actually be a great place to bring a very low-maintenance, laid-back date. The ambiance is nice enough to make you more than comfortable and the entire staff is very friendly.

Do make sure you have enough cash in your wallet. The only complaint I have about this place is that it does not accept any form of card, and the prices are high enough so that if order more than one course with beverages, you're going to need more than the usual guy or girl has in cash-on-hand. It was actually the only place where I've encountered this, and I wouldn't have expected it from the vibe they're going for.

But other than having to pre-plan your bill, a fantastic, unexpectedly amazing stop in the Mission.

Just came back from a delicious dinner of grilled duck bratwurst, fresh kraut, and one of the tastiest non-vinegar based potato salads yet. I also shared the chicken liver with my friend, which was rich and fatty and generously served with several pieces of toast, pickles, and red onion. Fairly priced, nice cozy atmosphere, and friendly wait staff. The only gripe would have to be the cash-only policy. Otherwise, a very lovely San Francisco (specifically Mission district) spot!!

Wow!  This place is amazing!  I'm so glad that it's only a block from my house!

The food is simply delicious and very competitively priced.  This is already my weekly haunt when I'm in town.

Sehr gut!

I'm normally all like, SAUSAGES YES!!  STUFF ME IN EVERY CREVICE OF EVERY BODY CAVITY PLEASE HOLLA BACK GIRL DON'T STOP BELIEVIN and othersuch, but this place is new, so I'll be gentle.

"Didn't this place used to be El Farito Market?" I wondered as I crossed Folsom and 20th Street.

I think I was their second customer EVER.  Like, I walked in on their first official day open around 10 minutes after they had opened, and there was only one other person at a table.

That person was actually sitting and casually enjoying a Kohlrabi and Rutabaga Gratin with a fresh spring green salad and reading a book, that I was all - an intellectual!  Therefore, I SHALL BE THE FIRST TO REVIEW ON YELP SINCE YELP IS A BUNCH OF INARTICULATE EGOMANIACAL FRAT KIDS JUST LIKE ME AND THERE'S NO WAY ANYONE WITH HALF A BRAIN WOULD EVER WRITE A REVIEW FOR THE PEONS OF SAN FRANCISCO!!!!

I think I'm amazing too.

Their menu is as of right now tiny (see http://www.yelp.com/bi...) - they have sorrel and potato soup, a celery root and potato salad, the aforementioned gratin, an herbed cheese spatzle, and several sides, desserts, and assorted pastries.  Oh yeah, and the DUO OF AWESOME that I ordered.

I ordered the Mache and Raw Asparagus Salad with Pistachios and Shaved Gruyeres, with a light lemon sauce.  I added some poached chicken with the salad, with came lightly dressed with olive oil and complemented wonderfully with the lightly sour dressing.

On the recommendation of the waitress, I also ordered the Veal Schnitzel Sandwich with Chive Sour Cream, Red Spring Onions, and a green salad, served on rye bread.  For extra, you can opt to have an egg on your sandwich, which I highly recommend.  First off, the rye bread is wonderful and deliciously hearty, coupled with the chive sour cream blend and the AWESOMELY TENDER VEAL SCHNITZEL makes this sandwich one I excitedly look forward to.

This place right now is cash only and open for lunch only.  Also, they don't yet have a liquor license, but they serve these incredibly bio-organic sodas and juices, with stuff like elderberries in it.  I didn't try them, but every other table had them and they looked fantastic.

When I was there, they didn't actually list the sausages they had on the menu, but the waitress did list them verbally - I remember duck, kielbasa, and bratwurst, but there were 6 total, so I missed three of them.  BUT - when they open up at night, they are only going to serve German sausages, German beer, and German wine - the rest of the menu is going to remain a lunch-only option.

Oh yeah, by the way, the people who are bringing you Schmidt's are also the wonderful folks who brought us Walzwerk over on 15th and South Van Ness, so you know that a) the people are totally awesome neighborhoodizens (TM maw) (and also - HOLLER TO THE EAST MISSION CROWD, STAY OVER ON VALENCIA, DIRTY HIPSTERS!) and that b) the sausages are gonna be stuff-in-my-butt worthy.  I mean face.  I mean mind.  Since I'm an intellectual.  Yup.

Lunch boredom?  Check out Schmidt's - it's one of a kind!

I didn't want to be the first to review, because the owners of Schmidt's are friends of mine.  But I am speaking to you as a food-lover now, and I truly think that the food is great!

Like their other restaurant, Walzwerk, the dishes are East German in origin.  It's amazing how many people are scared off by this fact - "Will there be anything for vegetarians?"  (Yes!)  "Is it all heavy and covered in sauce?"  (No!)  What you will find is a variety of dishes to suit everyone's palate.

Just open for lunch now (limited dinner/beer to follow in time), there is a nice tight menu of offerings to entice you.  I have tried the Veal Schnitzel Sandwich, which is great, made even better with a fried egg on top.  I also loved the Spatzle, which is the ultimate comfort food that I would challenge anyone to resist.  The Rudabaga/kohlrabi Gratin is another hearty yet healthy dish, which could be shared or would work equally well as a main course.  One of my favorite dishes was the Mache Salad - bright and fresh, and full of raw asparagus, pistachos and shaved cheese.  Excellent.  The sausages and soup looked amazing, so that is next on my list to try.

Eating here really brought me back to my trip to Berlin a few years ago.  Bright and charming, with fresh, delicious dishes, friendly and efficient service, and always a few surprises on the menu.  This is modern German cuisine at its best, and I love every bite.

Schmidt's has been  on my list of places to nosh for some time now. i finally mad it there this week. i had the veal schnitzel sandwhich. well, i to agree with Ward W. that the sandwich is a little dry, it is something that a little spicy mustard doesn't cure immediately. if you haven't tried German food Schmidt's is a good place to start, although I did not find the schnitzel selection as vast as Schnitzelhaus,  or other German food establishments. Oh, and Lauren J., I know what you are saying about the waitress ;-) ;-)

The food was good enough. The prices are decent but the portions are small. 10$ for one sausage 4ozs of kraut and some potato salad seems a little over the top to me. The chicken liver mouse is delicious and is a large serving. Also dessert omg that chocolate pudding yummy! The service was great as were the beers on tap. Overall I think I'll go back and try lunch and I'd maybe go back for dinner. I gave 3 stars because after 40$ I still went home and made a sandwich because I was still hungry.

I'm a neighbourhooditier as well. It seems that most of the reviews have been local so far. Anyway, anywhere that servers me food within a block of my house just gets a star for location. Yes, I am biased.

I had the cheese spatzle. It's warm. It's cheesy, with peas. If you had the bacon, it's a bit of a hit. Plus you have some of the healthy stuff a.k.a. lettuce. I think I will have to explore more. The downside is at the moment it's cash only and only open at lunchtimes. Which, as I normally work in the Peninsula is a pain (and I have to walk a bit further to get to the ATM...sigh). But, seeing as its all less than a 2 block perimeter - I am a happy Cat.

I'm polish, so Eastern European food is close to my heart.

I had the schnitzel "sandwich".  Unlike the quick fast food sandwiches you can grab on pretty much every German street, this oversized pork schnitzel sat on a piece of toasted wheat bread, covered in cream and red onions, and was placed next to a little green salad with light dressing.  I asked for some mustard, because that's how I roll, and it was all dang good.  Washed it down with some Bionade "refreshment drink".

The place wasn't packed, but the service was mad friendly.  We had a couple people come by twice each to ask if everything was ok.

They have a few shelves full of the foods I was forced to eat as a kid -- the stuff that I totally love now.

I live a block away from this place, so I'll be coming by often.  I hope they get their liquor license and open for dinner soon.
