9 reviews for Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Water Park
We visited the park this month (June 2009) and looooooooooooooved it! We took advantage of the afternoon special only to find we loved it so much we wished we'd put the money into season passes. The passes are well worth the money if you know you will visit 3 times or more.
This place is a MUCH better deal than Splashtown. The perks you get here that you don't get at Splashtown are as follows: FREE parking, FREE tubes, and you get to bring in your own food. The tubes are awesome! I have a 5 year old that clings to me and the double tube with one bottom closed was perfect for us! We even rode the White River in that thing! It was awesome! You can ride the slides in double tubes, too. Just be careful for a fast ride if you ride slides with your spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend! Feels like you're gonna flip inside the tube slide! But what the heck, it's all good!
Parking is great. My hubby drops us off at the door to get the tickets while he's parking. Then he jogs up to join us just as we get to the entrance.
Next year we will definitely go for the season passes!!
Have fun and don't forget the sunscreen!! ;o)

First - don't follow the signs that say "Schlitterbahn" as you'll be driving along the seawall for a while until you ask a Galvestonian who responds "Oh, its waaaay back". It's right next to Moody Gardens - head for the pyramids!!!
Having been to the location in New Braunfels this place is definitely not up to par of "Schlitter"-ness. The restrooms were always messy (but then again its a waterpark filled with lots of little kids). It is slightly better overall than Splashtown b/c you can bring your own "drinks" and food, tubes and parking are free.
I found myself baking on the lazy river for most of my day. The surfenburg is one of the funner things to do in the park while you watch people get blasted away by the water pressure, although the wait was a little unbearably long late in the day. It is sort of hidden so I suggest you do this first! The Blastenhoff was...not worth the wait! for a 10s ride I think we waited forever (only one side was working)! The other rides weren't so bad of a wait.
Be advised - when bringing in food into the park - multiply what you normally eat times 4. Even being on the lazy river gives you the munchies!
All in all, if I had gone to this location first I probably thought "this place is cool, but a little small, but it is ok b/c tubes are free". A nice getaway from Houston heat/humidity as I imagined myself in a tropical paradise. I'd say this place is more casual and on a slower roll than the experience in New Braunfels. I'm not scrambling to try all the rides!

Summer is finally here. So to beat the summer heat, stop by our neighboring town Galveston for some summer fun.
This place is about the third of size of its big brother Schlitterbahn New Braunfels, but still worth a visit. This place is hustlin and bustlin with kiddos, families, and couples during peak hours (12-4 pm).
Some F.Y.I's before coming to the park:
-Price Check Please!: Discount tickets can be found at HEB. Regular price tickets at the gate are $37.99 (adult). Ouch!
-Pack lightly: The lockers are extremely small and at $7 make sure to just bring the essentials.
-Come early: Families arrive early, so tubes may be hard to come by during peak hours.
Some perks:
-The food here is pretty good and not too expensive. They have typical summer yummies, such as pizza, hamburgers, BBQ, hot dogs and ice cream just to name a few.
-The lines to the rides are not bad at all. The most we waited in line was 10 minutes, compared to almost 2 hours at the New Braunfels location.
So to beat this year's Houston humidity, heat and crowds stop by your neighboring "hot" spot for a cool, refreshing dip.

I grew up going to the original Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels, so I knew Galveston would disappoint. The Galveston location is probably 1/4 the size of New Braunfels and only $2 cheaper. I arrived at 10, right when it opened, and by noon, I had already gone on all the rides. The lines were about 10 minutes long, but from 12 - 4 pm, the lines got significantly longer. For the most part, I thought the rides were lame and short-lived. The best part about Schlitterbahn New Braunfels is the abundance of tube rides that last a good 15+ minutes, but that is not to be found in Galveston. It's pretty much Splashtown at Schlitterbahn prices. I would drive the extra 1.5 hours to New Braunfels (from Houston) for quality rides.

Texas is really good with their water parks. I had a blast here. There is only so much you can do with water and I'm pretty sure they have it all covered. I can't wait to try the original one. I hear its much better in the sense that some of their older rides are like 10 minutes long. Woohoo.
Hurricane Ike really messed this place up. However, I'll still review it based on previous trips here prior to the storm. I was assured they are re-opening for 2009 and I'm glad.
I have fun. I mean it's a really inexpensive way to have a good time and be a kid again. They have the only indoor (of course by indoor they mean wrapped in a plastic tent) water park I've ever seen. I've taken my sis and a few kids here and they have a blast. I like the lazy river, especially at a particular point in the river when water shoots out of this causeway and it flings you down the river really fast. Man, it's a blast.
Overall, the place makes me feel like a kid again. I eat fried foods, and have fun all day forgetting about bills, work, relationship drama etc. Just me and my family having a blast. The staff is very friendly as well. It's well worth the trip to just sit back and chill with the kiddies in your family.

Just got back from a Memorial Day weekend trip to Schlitterbahn in Galveston and I'm still feeling like a prune from being in the water so long. A great water park overall! Some things to note:
- not all of this park is enclosed as a lot of people had told me. About a third of the park has a retractable roof, and this section apparently stays open through winter. Rest of the park is open as you'd expect.
- the lazy river here is amazing...it has a loop that is 'lazy,' and then you can take a conveyor belt that's right on the river to the 'not so lazy' ass kicking river section that throws you around with a bunch of mini white water rapid bursts throughout. Just grab any available tubes lying around and hop in.
- yes, you can bring your own food and drinks here. That helps justify the $37.99 (I know, yikes) you'll pay per adult to get in here. We brought our own food, drinks and snacks and saved a boatload.
- no, you can't bring in your own alcohol, but they do sell it here.
- everyone just seems to claim a picnic table, leave all their stuff there, and take off to rides. Park seemed really safe, but I'd still recommend renting a locker ($5 rental + $2 refundable deposit) for your phones and keys.
- lines werent bad at all on a Saturday during memorial weekend...I guess people havent been thinking about Galveston much since hurricane ike hit so the crowds really werent a bother at all (me likey).
- the food seemed reasonably priced vs. the free colonoscopy you get at other theme parks, but the people running the food stands and bars are definitely in need of some training and typically move at lightning Koala speed to serve you. One dippin dots booth attendant even refused to take my credit card because 'she, um, didnt really know how to use, uhh, the credit card machine yet' - nice.
Overall, this is a fun, clean, spacious water park and I felt like I got my money's worth by the end of the day and our group of friends had a great time too.

I've never been a big fan of waterparks but Shlitterbahn changed my mind! I was pleasantly surprised at the free parking, free tubes, free life jackets, reasonably priced food and drinks, abundance of lockers, low priced admission price and the best part - you can bring in your own picnic lunch! I love it!
The place wasn't dirty, in fact, there's always someone near the restrooms to keep them clean and there are maintenance people always sweeping the floors and taking the trash out. The staff is friendly considering i's unbearably hot and they're quickly risking the chances of skin cancer.
I highly recommend you go visit this water park!

I grew up going to the Schlitterbahn Park just outside of San Antonio. I have fond memories of playing in the water, riding the tubes, racing down the water slides. You can imagine how thrilled I was to find that a Schlitterbahn was opening in Galveston.
Not only does this park blow Splashtown out of the water (yes, I had to), it is one of the best water parks I've ever seen. Withe the Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark, you don't have to wait for summer to have fun in the water. They have this really amazing retractable roof that closes during the winter so they're open during the winter. Imagine the simple joy of spending the day splashing around the waterpark in the middle of January without worrying about the chilly weather outside. This, alone, is worth the price of admission and the drive.
And, unlike many other waterparks you may have visited, Schlitterbahn offers free parking, free tubes, free lifejackets and allows you to pack your own picnic lunch while you spend your day at the park.
You can print tickets online or buy a season pass when you get there. I assure you, this place is a whole lot of fun year round. Great for a day trip or you can book a hotel in Galveston and make a litle weekend vacation out of it.
I think a winter day at the water park sounds like one of the best ideas for the holiday break the kids have each year. Better than piles of snow any day.
