Neighborhood: CastroI started going to Schizandra in 2005 and have seen a number of their TCM practitioners and CMTs for general health ( who can turn down a great massage?), cronic pain, and stress related hormone problems. Each and every time was a healing experience touched with relaxation and of course a taste of their fantastic tea.
The staff is warm, welcoming, and very talented. Martin and Joly take great pride in providing the highest level of clinical practitioners in a beautiful, high service spa-like environment.
You can't go wrong with this great find in the Castro.
Outstanding holistic care.... acupuncture, Chinese herbs, massage... the works! I found the practitioners here to be of the highest caliber, and have been using Schizandra for years with positive results... from colds to back pain from a ruptured disc, they always help me a ton!

All right people, I didn't want to do this but, it's gotta be done.
Pablo is amazing. He is cool, gentle, attentive, very communicative with his clients and always takes massage seriously as a therapy. He give information on stretching programs for his clients to help with problem ares.
For about a year, I selfishly kept my thoughts private, only telling a few select friends about P. But the Bay Area yelp community deserves to know of his skills. I only wish I could afford to see Pablo as much as my poor abused muscles desire. It's not his fault, good massage therapy costs money. I would even say that his therapy is a steal compared to all the other "spa" massage I've had out there in SF and around. But, I am a poor girl, with luxurious taste, so I'll have to keep going when I get my few coins.
Gentle, caring, and really effective. When the city's stresses hit me, and it's time for recuperation and some traditional Chinese medicine, I love going to Schizandra. A well designed space, comfortable treatment rooms, knowledgable staff, and reasonable rates make this a gem in Maestro Valley (on 18th st., between the Mission and the Castro.)

Hello Everyone in Yelp land! My name is Joly Herman and I'm the Co-Owner of Schizandra Health Center.
People ask me why our clinic is called Schizandra. Schizandra is pronounced "she-san-dra" and is a red, juicy berry that has been used for many centuries as a calming influence, and is used for detoxification and beautification. We love the berry, and serve it in a delicious tea which is full of all kinds of organic berries to nourish and help you to relax. Our mission is aligned with our namesake. We want to help our people in our to community relax, renew and feel refreshed..
We offer expert acupuncture, herbal therapy, massage and clinical hypnotherapy with some of the finest practitioners in the Bay Area. Our motto is FEEL GOOD NOW and we stand by it : ) Hot Stone Therapy, reiki, acu-massage...
Come visit, have some tea and get a great treatment. We'd love to see you!

updated: I've been back like 7 or 8 times in the past few months. I love this place and the folks there more every time I go. I think Pablo is the best massage therapist ANYwhere. He really, really seems to concentrate on the person and the pain and not his own agenda. He's so kind. The people who work the desk are smart and helpful. I can't imagine going anywhere else now.

what a lovely place. the people who work at the desk are kind and friendly. I had a massage with Pablo and it was the best I've ever had. And I've had lots. I'm going back next week. I'm going to kiss my dear friend who recommended schizandra to me.
I have had lots of mediocre and average acupuncture and in fact dismissed it a couple of years ago as ineffective. Recently, I was hospitalized with a sever illness and when I got out I decided to give acupuncture one more try and I found an undeniable healer.
His name is Jonah Hershowitz and he practices at a lovely and peaceful office called Shizandra Health Center, located in the Castro. The improvement I have had while being in his care has shocked my doctors and made me a believer in the benefits of chinese medicine.
I recommend him for his results, his ability to communicate what he is doing, why he is doing it and apply it metaphorically to life. His competence is obvious and inspiring. He is approachable, playful, serene and exudes balance. His beingness is education. I find him resourceful and curious and humble to the body and the play of life while staying engaged and being a partner in my health.
I highly recommend Jonah wether you simply want relief or if you want a complete health make over.
Enjoy!

I've been to acupuncturists before, but mostly in a teaching clinic setting. Schizandra is NOT one of these places. Mind you, I can only speak about Jeannie, and she's the best acupuncturist I've ever experienced. She has the probing inquiry of a scientist balanced with the intuition of a healer.
Knowing that I'm not a big fan of the herbs, she doesn't coax me into the expensive concoction that, in my experience, needed to be tweaked so often that I was left with 3/4 filled expensive herb jars that were just going to be thrown away.
Simply put, Schizandra is a professional organization with learned healers that recognize the needs of their patients.
Oh, and the magazines in the waiting room aren't from 1994.
Schizandra Health Center is a just that... a "health center". It isn't just another pamper-spa assembly line. I have been getting personalized, intuitive massages/ healing sessions from Tessa for a few weeks. I am very impressed and relaxed!
I've fallen in love with Schizandra Health Center! The staff is dedicated to healing and they will take the time to tailor the best plan of action for what ails you. I've been getting my herbs and yummy signature tea there since they opened. I cannot recommend Schizandra high enough!
I've had tons of acupuncture before but never as good as the treatments I get from Martin at Schizandra. He is fantastic and the staff is so great. They welcome you in and you relax the minute you walk in. They have great herbal wellness remedies that also do the trick. Thank you so much-
Jonah Hershowitz is my Acupunturist. I hurniated my L5 over 6 years ago and since then have had constant pain due to my cyatic nerve in my lower back, down my left leg and into my two small toes.
After the first visit the pain almost disappeared and by the end of the 3rd visit it is now gone! I have tried everything else...., wish I had seen Jonah 6 years ago. Very professional with his work - highly recommend that you see him for your self!
