I have been coming here for years--this place is amazing, love the owners. They have the best selection of vintage clothes in the Mission. SUCH cool stuff.
And now they have the sweetest redheaded girl working there. She is amazing! Very helpful with a unique eye for style. Stop by when she's there and let her dress you--you will not be sorry!
This place is always packed, but digging through the racks has it's qualities! -

I found this store while on a hunt through Mission to get my boyfriend a bow tie for Christmas. After looking around and preparing to be disappointed yet again by a lack of bow ties, I asked the man at the counter who produced a large box full of ties, bow ties, and ascots for me to look through. And once I found one I liked, the man then proceeded to tell me a little bit of information about the one I chose, such as the era it was from, and when I told him it was a gift he gave me a small, decorative gift box to put it in. Once you get the attention of the employees in this store, they are very nice and helpful!

Treasures galore! A bit pricey, but not ridiculou$, and with their excellent selection and well-repaired pieces, you'll get what you pay for. I wish there was a better vintage jewelry selection, but there is an expansive offering of other vintage clothing & accessories.
I swooned over some shoes, received excellent customer service (history of the piece, helpful suggestions, and even a small price reduction!), and walked out happy.
Well done. I'll be back! -

LOve love love this place. I just popped in for a visit on my way home from work. I found the cutest stuff. I only looked around for a few minutes, grabbed a few things( because I didnt want to spend all of my money)
I fell in love with the finery and the sweetest gentleman behind the counter(Bernard). Got out with the most fabulous dress with a butterfly print and sweet thoughts of my next visit. -

This is the reason I joined Yelp, so that I could give Schauplatz 1 star.
I have shopped here over the years and found some great digs BUT - during my last visit, I wanted to try on a cute dress...
As I approached one of the rude workers/owners(?) he said, "Isn't that a cute dress."
Me: "Yes, I would like to try it on."
Rude man: "Oh hunnie, you can't be serious."
Me: (confused) "Hmm?"
Rude man: "Oh, that won't fit you. That is a size 4. Don't be ridiculous."
Me: (baffled) "It states size 6, which is my size. I can try it on and see for myself if it fits."
Rude man: "I am a tailor and that will not fit you, don't be ridiculous."
Me: (hand the dress to the rude man and begin to walk out as I don't need to support his attitude/store)
Rude man: (shouts as I leave) "Grow up!"
Wow, can you believe that? He should have just called me FAT. Why would anyone in customer service ever act like that? Never again will I shop here. Never!!!!! -
Review from Ravena F.
This is the store you go to when you're searching for something very specific and very unique. This is *not* your Mission hipster kid uniform store. It's not huge. It's not stinky. It's not full of clothes you have to hold up to the light to check for holes.
Rather, this is a high quality vintage shop. They've done the browsing for you, and the results are impressive.
Specializing in mostly 60's & 70's styles, you can find, in impeccable condition:
catsuits, purple suede coat, yellow bloomers w/ matching halter top, hand needle-pointed dress, sequined tank-tops, men's & kids clothes
Best of all, the staff are really friendly, like they're gonna join you on this noble quest to find a leopard print, rhinestone, pink fur-lined catsuit. Even if you're clearly just browsing, they're friendly and offer intelligent conversation/quips should you choose to chat.
I find this to be an entirely pleasant shop in which to spend an hour. -

Schauplatz has so much character.
The owner has an acute eye for quality beautiful clothes, carrying an exciting array of dresses, pantsuits, vests, and more from all eras.
Whenever I pass by, I have to go inside. I am usually lured in by some gorgeous, fifties dress, which I know will wrap around the body perfectly. Just one article among many, dating back to a time, when a woman's feminine curves were captured and celebrated by classic designers. Artists that adored the hips and chest.
Unfortunately, I am usually in a hurry whenever I visit Schauplatz., so our afternoon trysts always leave me wanting more.
Schauplatz definitely deserves more than hurried encounters, because I can guarantee that if you take the time to really explore the racks, you'll have trouble leaving empty-handed. -

Ooooooooooooooooooooh how I love a good vintage store and ooooh how I love a good ORGANIZED vintage store even better!
What an amazing find this little gem is. The minute you walk in you are greeted by clothing, purses and shoes from many eras. They are all proudly displayed and smiling their beautiful fabricky smiles and just waiting to be touched, caressed, tried on, and even laughed at....um, I mean, with, definitely laugh with! (I speak specifically of these wacky chewbaca looking sweat bottoms, what the hell were those?!)
They have a rockin selection of 60's and 70's summer dresses and like I mentioned earlier, everything is so perfectly organized that it makes running through an entire wall of clothes a snap! The purses are also darling and the guy working there (not sure if he was the owner or not) had a great slightly dry wit about him that made our goofy fashion quest all the more enjoyable!
Definitely recommend a stop in! :)Listed in: I Love You SF!, San Francisco Shoes

It's true that Schauplatz is more on the "vintage" side of the pricing spectrum than "thrift," but what you're paying for is quality merchandise and great service.
I wandered in with a friend and began idly rifling though suit jackets-- when I tried on a nice 80's cut pinstripe jacket, the lovely German gentleman behind the counter (I forget his name!) snapped to attention to tell me how great the jacket looked on me--this wasn't one of those "oh that looks great on you" stock responses you normally get from vintage store clerks, this guy was actually EXCITED that I'd found something that fit me and my style perfectly. I believed his sincerity because, first off, the jacket DID look great on me (natch), and secondly, my friend tried on a skirt and he was like "oh honey no!" and then got all caught up in helping her find a really cute dress that fit her perfectly.
I came away with an amazing pinstripe suit and my friend got a couple of great dresses, plus the gentleman gave me good advice on a tailor (the suit pants were a bit too long) and how to care for my suit. They definitely need to fix their cash register, but even the longhand arithmetic used to calculate our sales tax added to the quaint, if a bit surreal, experience.Listed in: The Mission

Shopping for any decade costume party can be difficult, but once you get beyond 1950s the good pickings tend to be rather slim. My NYE will be spent on the USS Hornett in Alameda for a dance fundraiser, 1940s Fred Astaire style.
The two guys operating this place when my roommate and her cousin and I came in were absolute dolls. Tons of selection, first off, with each piece labeled either with a titled description and/or approximate decade to which the piece dawned from or style that it incorporated. Some pieces overlapped and worked for more than one decade. Again, extremely helpful when shopping for a fashion time piece. Once one of the gentlemen was free to assist us, he pulled all shots and started whipping out dress left and right, including some stored up in the loft section not available on display.
Not only did they have exactly the type of dressy NYE gala dress I was looking for, but they also had some pretty cute dresses I wanted for normal wear in general. I walked out with a black-gold shimmer, waist and butt gathered flattering number, 40s shoulder pads and all- which he marked down an extra $10 as his guessed quote was off by about $15. I'm looking so forward to whirling on the dance floor in my new dress and totally can wear it again and again.
And I will be back for more...perhaps the little cute...oh wait, shouldn't describe, so no one will go snatch it before me!! -

The men who run this shoppe are so knowledgeable & honest. They tell you if something looks bad on you even if it means you won't buy something at that moment. You'll be back though.
They have reasonably priced suits for men, the women's clothing is also divine. Its all in such great condition.
I LOOOOVE THEM!!!

My friend and I both had a day off so we decided to go for a stroll down Valencia Street, the final destination being 'Skunkfunk'.
I love Valencia as opposed to let's say, the Haight, because as cool as Haight/Ashbury is, it is crowded, overpriced, and sometimes not very worth it. And as the awesome cat who worked the counter at Schauplatz said, "there are so many good looking people who walk down this street!"
I wasn't really in the market for vintage dresses but I was impressed by their array of sunglasses, as was my friend who made a purchase. What was truly awesome is the music which was being played, as well as the guy behind the counter.
We ended up chatting about everything from music, to anime, theories, comics...one of the funnest experiences I've had in a while at a retail store. -

I have a friend who likes to say that you can't special order awesomeness. Obviously, he has never been to Schauplatz.
I have never seen a vintage store with such clean, immaculate pieces all organized neatly on the racks by style and color. And the prices are reasonable to boot! Really, there's no need to go to any other vintage/thrift store. This is your one-stop shop! When I popped in today for the first time, I immediately grabbed like 5 dresses in less than a minute. They were all staring at me, saying, "Come on Christy, the sweet German owners hand-picked us just for you!!! You know you need us!! Try us on, buy us, take us home!" How could I resist?!
I ended up deciding on a gorgeous cropped jacket and a knee-length navy dress with gold buttons. Both looked brand new, despite being from the 1970s, and were unusual while still fitting in with current trends. (Just a note: If you see something you like and the buttons are falling off, the guys working here will gladly tighten them up for you.) When I got up to the counter, I got distracted by a rack of sunglasses before I could even whip out my credit card. Any girl knows there's nothing better than cheap, stylish sunglasses! The man at the counter (Bernhard?) seemed to have so much fun helping me find a few good styles. He must've pulled out a dozen different pairs and gave me honest opinions on which pair flattered my face the best. It was like a sunglasses fashion show and I loved every second of it.
I cannot wait to come back here. Hell, I'd come back just to chill and chat it up with Bernhard. He is probably one of the nicest people I've met in San Francisco and he sure knows how to make a girl feel good about herself. Danke!! Hoffe dich bald zu sehen! -

Great vintage boutiqe (if you will). Their stuff is in great condition and their pieces are uniquely era specific.
I've picked up a dress for a 60's theme wedding.. yes. you read that right. And on the same day found the perfect baby blue spring coat in mint condition.
Bueno stuff here 'yall. -

This place is GOLDEN. If you are looking for something special and unique, go to Shauplatz, and be sure to ask the incredibly warm (and aptly named) proprietor, Ben Hart, for a little help. He is a retro genius, and a true man of style.
I was browsing for something for myself, as I am wont to do, when I realized that my fiance (now dear husband) still needed a tux for our wedding! I found a *perfect* late 50's/early 60's classic tux in just Mr. 23's size. Mr. Hart almost tried to talk me out of it, since suits are so much more stylish for weddings these days, and tuxes a bit dated. But, when I explained that we were going for a classic old style, then he totally understood. He was glad to hold the tux until I brought my guy back to try it on.
It fit *almost* perfectly, just needing a nip-in and a hem. Ben Hart kindly recommended a very good tailor to do the alterations! Woohoo! In no time, Steve23 was outfitted for the wedding.
Now, Mr. 23 has a gorgeous, perfectly tailored tux that cost less than a decent rental would have. Good thing, too, cuz you never know when those last minute black-tie invites are going to happen in this town!
Unsolicited advice for brides: Make sure your husband has a decent tuxedo, because it means you get to dress up and go out more often!Listed in: Born to Shop

This is an amazing little place for vintage clothes. From my visits there I am led to believe that it's owned and primarily operated by two friendly and helpful young German men. When I bought a jacket there once, the one who was there noticed that some of the buttons hadn't been sewn properly, so he resewed them for me on the spot!
I am told that "schauplatz" means "the scene." -

You know when you have an idea of that perfect dress or whatever and you think to yourself, where the hell am I going to find it? Well yesterday I decided that a red dress is the perfect color to bring in 2007. I knew I wanted something cool and vintage. So I am driving down Valencia and I see a red dress in the window of Schauplatz. I stop in to take a closer look only to find amazing vintage hats, purses, belts, and dresses inside. Believe it or not, I found "IT" the perfect red dress. Allan who I believe is the owner was so helpful--found me the matching belt and within 10 minutes I was out the door. (Also it doesn't hurt to have your boyfriend encouraging a red dress purchase, right?)
Anyway I feel like I found my store and will definitely come back to shop more. -

Well, Alan and Bernhard have saved my lives. Needed dress for wedding ASAP and I fell in love with a gorgeous maroon 70's gown. Trouble is, I discovered some gum on the skirt, and a few loose threads. These gentlemen raced against time to miraculously remove the stain and repair the compromised stitching so that I would have it in time. Even better, Alan hand-laundered the dress, as I was too afraid to do it myself. Such customer care and service is a rarity if not nonexistent these days.
I can always count on Schauplatz to have unique and fashionable clothing and accessories. This store also served as my one-stop shop for a vintage-themed engagement photo shoot--I walked a way with three one-of-a-kind very snazzy dresses that I continue to receive endless compliments on.
Just be sure to come equipped with plenty of quarters--the evil practices of the damned local meter maids have rendered me near-penniless! -

Shauplatz is definitely my favorite vintage store in SF.
Neatly crammed in to this small store on Valencia are some wonderful clothes, mostly from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Whether it's a cocktail dress in lime green, a faux fur belted 3/4 length jacket, a paisley pantsuit, or a purple velour tube top - you are sure to find something to make you smile. It always makes me think of the great wardrobe in Ang Lee's "The Ice Storm". They also have a great men's section.
Smaller, but nice choice of handbags and shoes as well.
If you are a vintage shopper, do not miss this gem of a boutique. -

If you don't have time to spend rummaging through forty thrift stores in search of that perfect item for this afternoon's picnic or tonight's soiree, hit up Schauplatz.
And one of the owners is cute! Go, flirt with him. He likes it. -

Better selection of vintage clothing here than some of the spots we had visited while in the Mission. Everything was neatly organized so made things easier. Clothing was in good. The prices were a little high but sometimes people don't want to dig around flea markets, thrift shops for vintage. They do it for you here so I can understand why the prices are little high..

I probably walked by this place at least ten times when it was closed before by some bizarre twist of fate, it was open once on one of my many Valencia St. strolls.
It was a super hot day and of course they don't have air conditioning, and all the clothes I tried on I had peel off, but it's all part of the experience of vintage shopping. And their "dressing room" fucking sucks unfortunately. It's this wack-ass curtain in the middle of everything-and it's riddled with holes (Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose)?
However, I got the most amazing cream colored wool forties frock that fits like a dream, and a really fresh looking cotton housedress.
They have a super adorable "shop dog" that has a little nest behind the counter, and the owner is a very cool guy-he got in this beautiful navy evening dress from the forties and he asked me try it on so he could see what it looked like (how can I refuse playing dress-up for a gay vintage clothing enthusiast?).
I also wanted to purchase a red wrap skirt, but it had a small stain on it. When I pointed it out to him he gave me a really nice discount on the item, and it was a good thing he did because the stain didn't come out (it's barely detectable though).
I would love to give this place 5 stars, but the crappy hours and dressing room, and the high prices knocked it down to four.Listed in: Born to Shop

My wife found the best 70s outfits for a party we're going to later this week. My wife said the service was impeccable so I went in myself. This place is totally GROOVY! I found a cool 80s YSL coat!
The girl who works there was indeed very helpful (and totally honest) about how the stuff I was picking out looked on me. I left feeling like a million bucks and I only spent $150! Thanks! -

Broke? Why yes yes I am, but that still doesn't stop me from starting up a new collection. This collection will be of vintage cuff links. Why you ask? Well you didn't ask, I'm posing the question so I can carry on with my sad excuse for a witty review... Because! What is better than collecting something that you can actually get uses out of? Baby unicorns is what, but they don't exist so good luck trying to beat my first reason.
Schauplatz didn't just have one pair, not even two pair of cuff links I wouldn't mind abducting into my house and onto my shelf to later hold together a french cuff, but that had about 15 pairs! All reasonably priced too! I came in around 13:00, went to three other vintage shops, all with a good selection of links to chose from, but found myself back here for a purchase... It was a good day. -

This Saturday is my best friend's bachelor party in the "classiest" of places: Reno. And what better way to represent, but a 70's theme of debauchery?
I waited and waited untl I l typed 'disco clothing' in the Yelp search engine. Here this place was..the reviews looked good..I hopped in my car hit this place up...
Wow.
Walked out here with some SICK gear. I'm the new ladies man for sure right now. White pants, brown shirt with enough chest room to roll with the sleaziest of my counterparts.
You know this place rules because there was like 3-4 different ensembles that I woulda rocked. I just chose these cause I needed to get back to work....
If you need your 70's fits, check this place out! And look in the back on the $10 clearance rack, thats where I got my shirt!!

Alright. You are going out, possibly disco style, and need something colorful and flamboyant that won't break the bank.
This is actually one of the best places to stop if you are looking for something quick and are not in the mood to tramp around the Mission and glare at rack after rack of smelly clothes.
The staff has always been really nice and helpful. :o) -

So it's my 'Lost in Translation' moment. I needed something hip to wear to the Supperclub with people half my age. I was not about to wear my standby black fleece or business casual stuff that screams 'yuppie'.
I landed here per chance and was blown away. John Waters would love this place. It had the coolest clothes with various patterns to fit your target audience.
I eventually landed a hip black vintage shirt that would not make me look like a fool, and the price was very reasonable. If I was a bit thinner I could have slipped on an authentic button down shirt with the classic hunter/woods cheesy pattern that happened to have the black and white little Playboy comic strip girl found on the joke side of the centerfolds. Friggin classic. MUST LOSE WEIGHT!!!
Anyways... Excellent place! -

We wandered in after viewing a few eye-catching dresses in the window.
The store's interior held a cavern of vintage clothing seemingly stuffed into the walls, racks, nooks and crannies. Schauplatz has a wide array of both women's *and* men's attire -- and not just vintage:
The store's co-owner, Bernhard, sells his own small line of jackets, tshirts and pants in addition to the bevy of older goods. My friend got a well-made poplin jacket with a "gas station" cut (only better), and I eyed the trousers wishing Bernhard designed for women. In my mind, they would fit perfectly.
Check it. -

I got an amazing 3 piece suit here for a wedding I had to go to, then took a friend in 2 weeks later and got him fully outfitted. The employees are great, and super know way more about fashion and tailoring than I ever will. They seriously had me sized just by looking at me, and had four suits off the rack within the first 2 minutes of me being there. All of which fit perfectly.
Great prices for the quality of clothing, meaning it's more expensive than cross roads but what you get is way better and you don't get the, "I'm way cooler than you because I work at a vintage store," attitude that I get a lot.
I think it helps that they genuinely like clothing and helping people look good here.
I'll be back! -
Review from Audrey B.
This is my favorite vintage clothing store. They have the most unbelievable dresses and the owner is great at sizing you up and producing something that is the perfect size and fit. Every time I stop in here I find something amazing (almost without fail) that I must have even if I don't have anywhere to wear it. I think they excel in fun and unique party dresses, but they carry a wide range of clothing (shirts, jackets, pants) and they have some great men's clothing. This is a place where talking to the owner will produce the best results - don't be shy!

this is no ordinary vintage boutique...
in my opinion, schauplatz ranks with some of the best vintage stores in new york, which makes it arguably the top vintage store in frisco. a case in point: i have come to schauplatz three times in the past six months to sell my "vintage" clothes.......and i was turned down each time. they didn't even take my old motorcycle jackets. "not vintage enough" was what i was told. so i'm like, "well, fine. why don't you just take them for free and give me a 10% discount on your items?".......um, as expected, the answer was a nice but firm "no." *sigh*
anyway, the point i'm trying to make is that a top vintage boutique should always turn down my "vintage" clothes cuz frankly, my stuff isn't all that.......and schauplatz agrees. *another sigh*
.
* btw, sold my old motorcycle jackets to crossroads for $$$.......and with that money, i came back to schauplatz and bought a kick-ass vintage leather jacket. yay! -

I'll admit, its pricier than the average thrift/vintage store in San Francisco but the clothing in here is out of this world (wow, i sound like a grandpa). Seriously, though, there are some mad fly things to be bought here. The fabrics, designs, patterns are hot and ... UNIQUE. Something that I love. You won't find 500 of the same "funky" button down hipster shirt here. You will find many unique, funky and feel good items that you'll be willing to sell your first born child for.
