Classic local burger joint in Elbe, WA. Haven't heard of it? What, haven't even heard of Elbe??? You're not alone.
Hiking near Rainier? Stop by this Greasy Spoon for a phat burger and a berry milkshake. It doesn't disappoint. Though it does seem to be getting a bit more expensive. A quick drive from the miss's house. Gotta admit, there's not a lot to eat around there anyway. -
Review from Jenny K.
It was great food but way overpriced. $30 for two burgers, fries and shakes.
My strawberry shake was decent, the onion rings were great, and the burger with swiss cheese and jalapenos was salty but good. Not sure I'd want to come back because the price doesn't match the food taste and quality. Definitely food that's filling but puts you in a food coma afterwards. -

you know, we crave a stop at scaleburgers everytime we drive through elbe. maybe once a month? a few times we've been on the road and trying to figure out a quick dinner stop and eventually one of us will get that a-ha moment when we realize that scaleburger is going to be just the ticket (fyi, if you're trying to call 411 to get their phone number, good luck telling the phone robot that it's in elbe...). more often, we're coming down from the mountain and want a greasy fix/reward after a solid day of exertion. unfortunately, 9 times out of 10 over the past year, they've been closed. so frustrating! there's a sign on the shack that says open, and sometimes even a placard out front that says open, but the green awning is always so clearly down. let me tell you, there's not much else for food nearby once you realize that scaleburgers is closed.
but, actually, it forced us to discover that whittakers has a nice grille/bar with picnic tables set up in ashford. it's a little further of the road and being able to get a beer is a nice bonus. -

Overall mediocre to disappointing.... decent chocolate peanut butter shake and just okay onion rings.
But they appeared to be having an issue with the salt shaker. Both my son and I experienced bites of our burger that were almost inedible.
Underwhelmed. -

On Sunday 6/26 stopped for a burger. There were lots of people, over 30, sitting around the shop. I wondered why. The menu is short, simple. Our simple order of two cheeseburgers took over 30 minutes. Unbelievable!!. No valid reason other than incompetence. The burger was good, but not that good.
So if you're not in a hurry, like to sit around on rotting old benches, and get OK food, this is the place. If you like good food, and moderately timely service (from order to ready, not table), go somewhere else. This isn't it. -

Stopped by this roadside burger joint on the way to a cabin weekend in Mt. Rainier. Very leery, at first, from the appearance of this little shack. The place was packed with fellow fourth of July travelers. Burgers were amazing!!! Their "special sauce" is very much like In N Out's sauce. Small menu, consisting of burgers, corn dogs, fries, onion rings, and shakes, but they have perfected these burgers!! Our entire group of ten was pleasantly surprised. Shakes are great, atmosphere was perfect. Bubble machine kept kids entertained. Service was fast considering they run out of a tiny shack, cash only. Gotta try :)

Purposely drove past many other dining choices on my way to Big Creek Campground on a Friday evening. It is a shed with several (key word) "outdoor" picnic tables set up in a gravel parking lot. I was told they don't allow dogs in the eating area and to leave her in the hot car in the sun. WTF???? It's a gravel parking lot with picnic tables, so there would be no health code regulations being violated. There was a significantly higher biohazard health risk from the tables with small chidren with poopy diapers than my 12 pound dog would have posed. I could understand if it was an indoor dining area, or even perhaps if the tables were under cover, but they were even sufficiently far away from the shack that if one chose to, one could light up a cigar or cigarette and be within the bounds of Washington's smoking ban. If you love your dog, don't eat here.

Overpriced for a roadside burger joint. Basically a thin frozen patty on a nothing special bun with some reasonably fresh tomatoes lettuce etc...they should be $4 at the most not $6. We also got about 5 onion rings for $4. Really skimpy, I thought, "come on it's onions not truffles!" Another pet peeve or should I say pet pee is there was no place to take a leak. The convenience store/gas station next door had a sign "no public rest rooms" and the stupid train restaurant charges a buck to use the john. The whole experience made me want to leave Elbe as quick as possible which is perhaps what the locals want.

Decent burgers and picnic tables to sit down on, had shakes and fries that looked good, didn't try them so can't say how they taste...but they looked good.

Pretty decent but the burgers tasted very much like Dick's drive in burgers (which i have had for a few years.) just more expensive ($5 or $6 a piece)

If Yelp had six stars this would be my only 6-star review! For this seasonal little hamburger place make sure to stop here either on your way to Mount Rainier or on your way back for lunch! If you love hamburgers, this is a best kept secret! Many Rainier regulars, hikers and climbers know this little shack very well! I have been coming here for years and even if not going to Rainier, I've come just for a visit! All orders are given a playing card and when they call your card, your order is up. Trying the "Overload", it's the best ever and make sure to get a shake. It's outdoor seating only so a sunny day visit is a must!

Review from Denice R.
Stopped in to give the burger and onion rings and try. LOVED my burger (the Overload) but at over $6 it was about $1.25 overpriced. Although the onion rings weren't greasy they definitely tasted like the 25-lb bags of frozen breaded throw-em-in-the-deepfryer onion rings and they were overpriced as well. I hoped for SPECIAL, home-made, or unique onion rings and was disappointed. Wish I would have tried a malt ... next trip to Mt. Rainier for that. So basically the food was expensive but the service was super friendly and the employees seemed to rock.
