SB Main Lofts
4 reviews for SB Main Lofts
Okay so I have a love/ hate relationship with my building. I love the inside of my apartment, it's spacious, modern and beautifully finished. Hence, the 2 stars. However, after 6 months of being here, I can honestly say that it is poorly managed. Not to mention that we have met 7 different building managers in 6 months... Not sure why all the crazy turn around, but here go my complaints:
1. The inside parking situation is a mess, my roommate has had more drama than the lifetime network. From having to tow a car that is blocking her spot, to the gate landing on her BMW, to the other day not being able to go to work because the garage door didn't open.
Mind you, she has written about 3 or 4 letters to SB, nothing has be addressed, fixed, compensated. It's very stressful for her and me, we both pay $200 a month to park :( BAD BAD BAD
2. Our washer/ dryer in unit, doesn't really work. We've given up on the thing and figured we can just do our laundry downstairs like everyone else. It's sad. Also, our dishwasher leaks. ALL THE TIME. We have called in maintenance to have it fixed, but it doesn't really change anything.
3. Even though we have this amazing apartment, in the end, we pay alot and get very little. Yes, there is a pool and gym, but there is no door staff. The security guards just sit there and look at cameras. It's not very friendly.
4. The other residents are often times inconsiderate. The other day a group at the pool brought their dog and tried to get it in the pool. Ewww... I will probably not go in there ever again.
5. Last month after trying to give the manager my rent check she said to leave it in the box. So I did. 3 days later I got a notice saying that we were being evicted because I didn't pay. I calmly called her up, told her to double check. She assured me that I didn't pay. I called my bank and the check had already be withdrawn. Went back to the office, gave them a copy of my bank statement. DRAMA.
6. When wanting a parking spot one of the managers, I think #3 or #4 got into a verbal argument with me, the tenant? WTF??? Was she on drugs? Who yells at a renter that is trying to give her money? CRAZY Town. I called the main office, told them about the incident, nothing was addressed.
At this point, I am looking for a new place to live closer to my job. I will probably miss my beautiful loft, but at least I won't get unwarranted eviction notices, nor will my roommate have to fight for her $200 parking spot. It's been a whole big mess. The common areas aren't always clean. The mail area is often times full of garbage. The security guard doesn't pick up banana peels on the floor. It's ghetto. Not to mention that crack heads/ ambulances/ and fire trucks wake me up at all hours of the night ;)
I don't live here. At least, I was going to live here, but my mind quickly changed once the application process began.
After checking out a unit, my partner and I took the time to fill out the rental application, get our paperwork in order, and write a check for the application fee. When we came by to deliver the application package, the sullen leasing agent informed us that the fee is cash only. Thanks for letting us know that when you handed us the application in the first place! So with the parking meter ticking, we rushed downstairs to an atm in a bodega, pulled out the money, and came back upstairs to see the leasing office door closed with a "back in thirty minutes" sign affixed to it. I suppose that the entire leasing office just HAD to close down immediately to show someone a unit instead of waiting an extra minute for us to come back.
So after that, my partner and I decided that if the company can't even do the application process right, then they must be struggling with maintaining the rest of the building. We took our business elsewhere.
I'm not sure why my review is not showing up here... ;-(
It's been about 10 days since i posted a comment and I still feel that SB Main is not the right place for me.

I have been very hesitant to review my new building for a variety of reasons:
1) Maybe everyone on Yelp does not need to know where I live...
2) The hatred for a Barry Shy building is very intense.
3) I just moved a couple of months ago, and I'm still trying to get a lay of the land.
Overall, I LOVE my new loft. I moved into a 3 Bedroom Loft with two bathrooms and roughly a little over 2500 sq ft. The layout of the loft is by far one of the coolest spaces that I have ever seen. My bedroom is HUGE. My bathroom is FANTASTIC. Our kitchen is pretty nice, but I really wish that we did not have an electric stove. We even have a small balcony on the side of the building, which means that smokers are not exiled downstairs or to the roof! There is a rooftop pool with a gym and a rocking view of the Historic Core.
However, parking is a nightmare. I have a space in the building, but occasionally a come home to find someone random is in my spot. The security and building management are less than helpful in these situations. The original manager from when I moved has since quit for unknown reasons, but I'm sure that it has a lot to with Mr. Shy's lovely business reputation.
My general feeling is this, I have seen a bunch of different lofts over the years, but my layout is by far the best. Sometimes the building is loud and I can hear my upstairs neighbors, but I try my best to ignore it so that I will be left alone when I am having a loud night. If you are looking for a quiet building to relax in, then SB Main is not the building for you. Personally, I enjoy that the building is filled with people at all hours.
I LOVE MY LOFT! I LOVE MY BUILDING!! I LOVE DOWNTOWN LA!!! I might just got yell it from the rooftop pool a la Superbad. I'm not ashamed to say it!!
