Review Highlights
Located directly across the street from the aptly-named Hell Gate Post Office (which actually makes hell seem pretty inviting, but that's a whole different review) is the slightly bougey Savoy Bakery. Savoy has the ONLY good coffee in East Harlem. I swear.
Plus they have:
a) delicious cheese danishes
b) a velvet couch
c) GIANT iced coffee for 2.25. Seriously. It's at least 32 oz.
d) wonderful strawberry shortcake, complete with miniature pastry swans on the top. Thanks to them, parties at my work now have an alternative to stale, dessicated grocery store cakes. (Oddly, they generally choose to continue to buy stale, dessicated grocery store cakes, because I work with masochists).

These bakers know their business. I went straight for the pastry, and found the choice deliciously difficult. Do I get the red bean danish? Or the coconut one? Oh, what about that massive chocolate croissant?
Most bakeries these days interpret "croissant" as "buttery heavy bread" which is not actually what is meant to be going on with the whole croissant baking shenanigans.... but Savoy seems to be doing pretty well in this regard. Ok, so I regretted getting the slightly more healthy red bean danish, and wished I had opted for one of the amazing looking ham & cheese or cream cheese delights. The choices were endless. All between $1.50 to $2.50.
The cakes looked similarly decadent and made with a great deal of care, though I have not sampled them so I can only judge with my eyes here.

I wanted to love Savoy from the moment I first approached the door and noticed that the handles were rolling pins......how kitschy cute is that?. Unfortunately the huge chocolate chip cookies I got here were hard and stale. Reading the previous reviews really got me excited to try this place since it's close by and the interior is really cute, but it was dissapointing. I'm giving this place 2 stars for now and will try some other items in the near future.

I think it's completely overrated. The chocolate croissant was too sweet and gross. You have to heat your own pastries in the microwave, which is pretty lame. There's no place to sit, except for a few uncomfy stools against a wall. The earl grey tea was a bag out of a twinnings box. It was too packed, and the customer service was terse as a result. Not to mention scary man who keeps staring @ you from across the counter. BLAH.
For a REAL cafe + delish pastry experience in east harlem, go to East Harlem Cafe on 104th & Lex. The two sisters that work there are professional, BEST chocolate croissant me & my friend ever had. The tea is fresh and organic.
Savoy = totally overrated imho.

Wonderful neighborhood bakery, plenty to choose from. Breads, muffins, cakes, and all kinds of cute treats... Very posh-y, and ostensibly part of the gentrification of Spanish Harlem, or SpaHa to some. I will definitely be returning..
My colleague bought a strawberry mousse cake here for a celebration. The packaging was very nice, the cake looked too cute to cut, and the cake itself tasted AMAZING! so light and delicious. u don't feel like u ate a tub of lard afterwards. I will definitely buy a cake here!
What an unexpected treat to find this deliciously sophisticated cafe in the heart of El Barrio! I was in the area to pick up a book from the library next door and spotted this shiny gem. I had to pop in to check them out. Ordered a sweet confection that was reasonably priced and about as fresh it could get. I will be back. Fantastic service, great quality, clean and cute.
Oh SO cute. Had a really hot, frothy cafecito latte and sugar free cookies that were good. I wanted anything from the display case, yup, anything because it all looked great. There is a counter that runs along the side with really cool stools made of re-inforced crates, where I sat and had my beverage and read the voice/press/newspaper.They were very friendly and encouraged the lounging.
This place is definitely what El Barrio needs and I hope to see more like it sooner rather than later.
Oh and Next time, screw the restraint, I'm having something creamy and decadent w/ my coffee.
If anything can point to progress in our beloved "up-and-coming" East Harlem, it's the Savoy Bakery. It boasts an excellent and friendly staff, with very reasonably priced baked goods, and a great local feel (furnished by local artists).
Half a block from the 110&Lex stop on the 6, Savoy is the perfect pre-work coffee stop -- but with enough depth in the menu to cater the sweeter side of your Sunday morning brunch. I once had the pleasure of tasting a cake baked there -- from what I recall, I think it was chocolate deliciousness with chocolate icing, and filled with chocolaty goodness. Mmmmmmm......
Oh, and try the chocolate croissant along with a cup of Savoy's house brew. Enough to run that Sunday-morning hangover back to the Upper East Side where it belongs.

The Spearhead of gentrification has begun pushing into Spanish Harlem (and beyond) with the force of a hundred cafe's (all important accent missing which is NOT found on "Coffee Shop") and boutiques - all pushing the livability quotient in this once dangerous and dodgy area WAY up.
That said, Savoy is a welcome addition to 110Th street and it's nice to get a cup of coffee from something other than a tin-can-cart, but i must say that i am disappointed with their pastries by and large. i have tried several of the offerings and am largely disappointed by the largely bland and dry quality of each.
I won't judge too harshly however - I'm happy to have some other settlers in my wagon circle and i dig the coffee, but they could do some work here...

Savoy is on my way to the subway from my house. Right after I moved here, it was one of the first places I went to in my neighborhood, for some coffee and juice one morning. I was enticed by the beautiful pasteries and cakes in the glass cases, but resisted the temptation. More recently, they started advertising slushies in the window, so, curiousity piqued, I went in.
I tried the passion fruit slushie on the cashier's recc. OH. MY. GOD. It was AWESOME. I don't think I have ever had a passion fruit, but I don't care. This thing is unreal. It is sweet and a little spicy (how? is passion fruit spicy?) and delicious and amazing. I went two days in a row, and even when the same girl was working and laughed at me, I didn't care. The passion fruit slushie means that much to me.
[NOTE: I think they have other flavors. I just don't care.]

I have the grand pleasure of living right upstairs from the new Savoy Bakery. The smells that come wafting up are wonderful! Much better than the smell of cooked meat from down the street. Now, I haven't tasted the pastries, but my roommate says they're good. I love the Mocchachinos they make there because they'll make them with soy milk and they don't make them too sweet. It's a perfect blend of coffee and chocolate! I crave them all the time! Plus, they just opened and are doing tons of business, despite the other bakery around the corner. And I asked them if they would consider vegan desserts, and they said they might! Wow! Oh yes, and they're always extremely friendly and will get to know your name if you become a regular.
However, they're pretty stingy with their internet connection. And this "friendliness" can go overboard into annoyingness. Like "what are you doing? where are you going? who are you going with?" Um, no thanks...
Vegetarian friendly!

The place is so unexpected in this area...its very ''trendy'', clean, lots of variety, and I believe they're green. The prices are very good...something like this in the East Village would rob you blind. We got a pecan pie for $12. It wasn't the authentic pecan pie...it tasted health-ish but still the crust was yummy. The staff is friendly and I can't wait to come back here and try their individual-size pastries.
I love the place, the super-friendly staff and (yuuummm) their pastries... and of course, the coffee: it helps me start out the day with the right mood!
Savoy is super cute & makes me happy every time I walk to the train. If only it were open later!!!!! :(

Nice price and range on the pastries, although something more fiber-y and grain-y would have been… Read more »
The banana turnover is what gets me to come in time and time again. The owner was really nice when I asked him if they had any, he told me there were some fresh out of the oven...mmm, those things were heavenly! There is also some kind of custard puff pastry that's shaped kind of like a star...that's another really good one. The prices are nice and cheap and it's a great place to grab a snack on the go.
I really like this bakery. It's cute and unexpected in this part of town. It's always clean and looks nice and relaxed. I've never taken a laptop there before but I think there's an outlet and wifi that either they provide or from the library next door. The breads are great. I had the onion brioche most recently. It's a brioche bun with caramelized onions inside. It was awesome. i've had a curry bun from them also and it was good. I've never had their cakes but they look pretty. It's got that asian bakery cake look to it. The white frosting with fruit as the topping and most likely part of the filling also. But you should know that this is a bakery that sells coffee not a coffee shop that sells baked goods. I personally don't like coffee so I can't say anything about their coffee but when I ordered a chai latte, it was made witha tea bag. Not what I was expecting at all. But i still love savoy bakery. The fact that it's on my walk between my apt to the subway doesn't hurt either.
Big fan of the sweet bread and the cakes here. The prices are very reasonable. And the friendliness of the staff is unbeatable.
Best croissants this side of the atlantic! This place is very affordable and has an amazing selection of delicious pastries. And they make a mean latte as well. They also have new artists every month who hang their works on the wall- one of the few places in the area. It seems like it would be a great place to buy some affordable art.
