I woke up this morning with a chill caressing my shoulders as I pulled my comforter over my head and shrunk back against the down pillows tucked under my head... and as I lay there, eyes closed, nostalgia came at me like a Pacific swell...I gasped slightly and giggled.... Chanel (my cat) looked at me as if it was a stranger she was curled up on top of...not her loving owner of 17 years....
In deep sleep I dreamt myself ten years younger... living in Albuquerque, New Mexico... when I spent most days in a mota-induced haze, filled with high hopes and twenty-something aspirations... it was during this time I worked by day at a record shop and by night as a cocktail waitress... I was free, as long as the $325 for rent was met every month.
This was the heyday of my vintage clothing buying and selling, which has been a pursuit of mine since I was 13 yrs old ... there is something about thrift stores, estate sales, church sales, and consignment shops... rediscovering forgotten treasures... that makes my heart warm and cheeks flush...
And the best spot in Albuquerque ...or almost anywhere I have lived, for that matter... is the Savers Thrift Store on San Mateo Blvd... a pack rat's utopia... I have found 1940s Dalton cashmere sweaters for eight dollars... heavily embroidered 1940s H Bar C gabardine western shirts for five dollars... Mary Quant style shift dresses from the 60s for five to ten dollars... and once a magnificent, gleaming (and not cracked!) Lucite purse with double handles for twelve dollars... thrifty and highly collectible finds that helped pave my way to California living... turning profit in resale... sometimes two or three Benjamins at a time...
I miss those carefree days... when I could spend two or three hours at Savers... delicately sliding hanger after hanger in centimeter increments... pupils dilating as my hands fell upon the Next Big Find...
great. sometimes, but can be a bit pricey for a thrift store....
i went there to find my Halloween costume, great for creating your own!
i spent about $17 bucks to become a chola for the night. not bad.... and my costume was a hit so i guess that's good!
they also have new costumes and are known to be a good place for finding things as far as a costume headquarters goes.
what is with the prices on the furniture! WTF its used and chipped. you're better off just buying it new for the extra bucks.
plus i love all things vintage, so savers is good for that.
good for getting bric-a-brac or to find frames for artwork! they are always really cheap! whats with all the broken cameras though! they need to have someone q.c. them before they go on the shelf.
i check about 10 out of 20 there and 7 of them were broken....
i gave up at looking for that score...
I have a love hate relationship with savers.... sometimes you can find goods, but other days you are going through each rack and can't find squat.... its best if you can find the colored tag priced deals, but usually those are just plane U.G.L.Y items. oh well, it doesn't stop me from going there... gotta love it, gotta hate it... that's what thrift stores are for right. Bargains, bargains, bargains! You know you can always get that good feeling of not being the mall going carbon copy when you walk out of there! :)
