Save A Bunny rescues bunnies and wabbits. You can foster or adopt through them, as well as volunteer with the long eared furry friends! They are one of the best animal awareness agencies around!

Although I have not adopted a rabbit through SaveABunny, they are a highly respected and fantastic group to work with.  I've been fortunate enough to hear their founder, Marcy Schaaf, speak at a several events. She's very knowledgeable and compassionate about many aspects of rabbit care, health and behavior.

They've done some very clever money raising campaigns, including the recent Mr Pinkerton for president.  http://mrpinkerton.sav...

As far as rescues go,  I've always been impressed with how innovative and in front of the curve they are too. They have a fantastic website and are always able to provide helpful advice to the public.

I have volunteered for SAVEABUNNY and worked with Marcy for years and know that she is passionate about providing the best care and homes for her animals.  I am the rabbit advocate for a local shelter and she has rescued many rabbits from us at the 11th hour.  She has provided numerous ideas to assist us in lowering our euthanasia numbers.  Rabbits are the 3rd most euthanized animal and at least that for the most abused, neglected and abandoned animal.

Unfortunately, we at the shelter do not get to choose where a rabbit goes, we can only educate and hope for the best, for those rabbits who are adopted.  Rabbits are very social creatures who do best in a home environment with a loving people family.  They do not live well outside, they merely survive, and often, not even that.

Fortunately, the rescue groups screen the potential family and homes, to ensure that the rabbit goes to a loving home, where it will receive the proper care and housing.  Additionally, Marcy, works hard to place the right rabbit(s) in an adopter's home.  This means that the initial bunny seen on the website, may not be the best bunny for your home, due to disposition, other pets, children, available time to spend with the rabbit, placement and a whole host of other concerns.

Often people look for a pet, due to looks and looks alone.  This is not the best way to pick a pet, any pet.  Rabbits, more than other animals, pick their own friends and do so at their leisure.  Rabbits are like teenage girls, they either like each other on site, or hate each other on site.  If they hate each other and are forced to live together, one may kill the other.  Due to this, bonding rabbits take time and a special ability to allow the rabbit to choose it's partner.  Marcy is the best at this process.

We would like nothing better than to not have any rescue groups - because all animals find loving homes from the shelters and abandonment and abuse are issues of the past.  But, unfortunately, this is not the case.  Marcy often takes the severely abused or neglected rabbits along with the injured, abandoned and death row rabbits.  She does this with compassion and concern for the rabbit first.  She provides care, love and a piece of herself to each rabbit that passes through her door and anyone who has been to see the rabbits, can feel the warmth generated.

Anita, I am not sure what the real story was with you, but also having worked with HRS and Rabbit Haven, I know that they also have guidelines of who they adopt to and I suspect that you were not truthful with Heather, regarding your true intentions for your rabbit.  She also, does not just adopt to anyone, but places her animals carefully.

All of the rescue groups require the rabbit to be an indoor companion, not an outside rabbit.  It is only the shelters who are unable to require that a person provide good care for their companion animal.

I encourage everyone to go to your local shelter and talk with the rabbit people and visit the rabbits in the shelter.  Visit SaveABunny and you will feel the difference.  Marcy makes tough decisions for her rescue group, and for her bunnies, who cannot speak for themselves.  It is the same decisions that I wish we, at the shelter, could make.

Binky on,
Suzi

Working with SaveABunny, I've had the pleasure of seeing many rabbits find forever homes.  The people in this organization really care, and they do a great job saving rabbits, an often under appreciated animal.  Plus they throw great parties!  And my buns love their cookie treats.  :)

My interest in reviewing here is simply: I love rabbits.

I feel they need more of a voice and got the short end of the deal with the "Easter Bunny" Icon.  I wanted to spend my effort on helping them.
Now I volunteer at SaveABunny. One of my responsibilities is to give the rabbits "snuggles". That to Marcy is as important to cleaning and grooming.  We work *really hard* to socialize and love the buns so they can love you back. They've had a rough time so the volunteers make sure they get a break.

If you choose to adopt from SaveABunny, YOU will save another rabbit from being killed. It's like living one day at a time, one step in front of the other.  Say it like it is: SaveABunny's life. So, that's the name.

When I first met Marcy, I was surprised to find that if I mentioned one of the rabbits by name, she would tell me all about their personality. She spends her energy getting to know each of her rescues so adopters can get the RIGHT match. This...*if anything*  is the reason you should look at SaveABunny. If your not happy, nor is the rabbit, vice versa.

'Save a bunny'  *IF* you want to give a rabbit a new loving family & comfortable life.  Be warned...they are not good with fitting into your life, and they won't change for you.  *However*, they will unconditionally love you...it comes with the package...and like any relationship: you must build their trust.  The KEY: understand the way they communicate so you will hear them say  "I love your too. Thanks for giving me a new life." (followed by a little bunny contentment chatter)

In closing:
Anita's review saddened me. To pitch rescue groups against each other is wrong, especially non-profit. They all do great work. They all should be supported. Right?

I rescued both my bunnies from Marcy at SaveaBunny (originally Pooh and Diego, now Millie and Nemo, respectively!).  I found it VERY easy and smooth during the adoption process.  I had Millie first, then I decided to get another.  Marcy allowed me to put my Millie through a "dating" process.  Millie was very protective of her space, but after an hour or so, she made it clear that she'd like her life partner to be Nemo.

Marcy is very protective of her bunnies.  She treats them as her own kids and carefully screens.  This is important since all these bunnies come from neglectful pasts.  If you don't have the patience to get a short screening, then you're probably not ready to be a bunny's forever home!

Oh, and Marcy looks a lot like Cheri Oteri from Saturday Night Live.  Makes meeting her even more fun!

If you are looking for the perfect pet, then check out SaveABunny. This non-profit rescues rabbits from shelters around the Bay Area, neuters them and adopts out to "forever homes". I have two rabbits from the shelter - Belle and Ferdinand - they are litter box trained and have the run of my apartment. Marcy is the amazing lady who runs the shelter and she's very particular about who she allows to adopt a bunny. They aren't the best pet for small children, but make a great "urban pet". Call in advance or email via the website, you have to be a serious adopter to spend time with the bunnies.

You would think that a rabbit rescue agency would be interested in adopting out the bunnies they save.  Well, don't look at SaveABunny because they are so particular, and if you don't say the correct things, or have a rabbit who you're trying to pair with, you can kiss off your chances of finding a rabbit at this place.  They have rabbits on their website that they have had for almost a year.  Doesn't seem as though they are that much in a hurry to adopt their rabbits, now does it?  After being nixed by this so called "rescue" agency, we adopted a rabbit from Rabbit Haven in Santa Cruz.  At one of the adopting fairs that Rabbit Haven goes to, the director, Heather, helped us match up our rabbit with his soul mate.  Our rabbit is a very, very happy bunny and so is his mate!
