I trusted Alice with my life. I have crazy thick and curly hair and my first few haircuts there were nothing short of god sent.
I went back on NYE 08 and the place was packed (whatever, not a big deal). She was running late (again, a non issue). Well, she was coloring hair and trying to do my hair at the same time. Kind of strange. Well, my hair ended up looking like a pyramid (one side was shorter than the other, normally she took the time to soften the layers so my hair didn't get mulletty as it grew out).
I'm still growing the cut out (it's now May 09). Alice, I love you but please don't rush your beautiful work.
I got my hair cut here once. I was in dire need of a trim, and didn't have time to schedule with my usual stylist ahead of time. I can't remember the name of the person who cut my hair, but she was running very late. The haircut itself wasn't a disaster, but nothing that really knocked my socks off. She knocked $5 off the initial price for running late which I guess was nice.
However, I am also really upset they closed the coffee shop. I would have given the coffee shop 5 stars! This is the one place close to my office that sells La Columbe! Although I thought the food was overpriced, I knew this was a reliable place to get decent coffee without a long line for a decent price. I agree with the previous poster, it seemed like once Bucks county closed, their business really picked up. Even with that additional Starbucks. Boooo!!!!
I loved Elizabeta (I think that's her name). I walked in completely last minute to have 12 inches of hair cut off. I told her I wanted a simple bob with a little bit of layer to it and nothing fancy which is exactly what I got. I think they charged me 35 dollars for probably the best haircut I've had in years.
Saturn is right by my work, and they can often do same-day appointments, which makes it made convenient for me.
I went in and got a cut from Ananda, who is super. She took my annoying "make it look like this picture" request in stride, and let me know what was possible for my hair type and what wasn't. I have hair thick enough to make some hairdressers bitch, but she never complained. And at the end, she showed me how to style it. Bonus.
Also, the entire cut cost $25. Now that's sweet.
I had my hair cut and colored here by the same stylist for about two years. My hair always looked great however I really hated this place. The stylist could never seem to remember who I was, even though I always made sure to tip generously and referred friends to her. The whole staff was terribly unprofessional, they would actually talk trash about other staff members and clients right in front of me, and once while I was getting my haircut, the stylist said, "so how was your week?'. Naturally I assumed she was talking to me so I started to answer and she said ,'oh I'm not talking to you!" That was one of my last visits, I liked the haircuts but I tired of the attitude!
I went to Saturn Club when I first came to Philly, and was neither disappointed nor impressed with the cut I got. A year and a half later I was in the mood to get my hair cut quickly and made another appointment here since it's nearby.
The waiting area is definitely no-frills. The chairs are not particularly comfy and you won't be offered a drink. But since this is a pretty casual salon with low prices, I guess you shouldn't expect much in the way of extra amenities.
The girl who washed my hair scrubbed my head so hard my head went numb. The woman who was cutting my hair was friendly, but I got the impression she was sort of chatting on autopilot since she asked me the same questions several times.
After she finished trimming my hair she blow-dried it without putting any product in it first (whatt?) so my hair felt sort of fried and tangled when I left. Also, this meant she had to really yank the comb through my hair as she was drying it, which didn't help much with my already-numb scalp.
The cut is decent and pretty much what I wanted--a basic trim--but I definitely would not trust my hair to Saturn Club if I was doing something drastic.
For $25, I won't complain, but I'm definitely still on the hunt for a good salon in Philadelphia.
I would never go back here for waxing. I had the worst experience EVER there with a bikini wax and on top of that I had to wait around FOREVER. Waxing is a no no there!
But.....
Alice is the best hair dresser I have ever been to! I have EXTREMELY Curly hair, and she is the only person in the city that I have found that actually knows what she is doing! At first I was scared because she cut my hair dry and it got huge and frizzy, but trust me she knows what she is doing. And she is very receptive to your input in terms of desired length etc. But the best part, she super friendly and the cuts only cost $40!!!!!
I can't rave enough about her!
I just want to say I'm really bummed out that Saturn closed its cafe. Never went there for a haircut but they had great coffee and the staff were so friendly. There was no warning, either. Why would they close down the cafe when they probably picked up business after Bucks County closed down on the same street? Now there is no cafe along that lovely little block of Sansom.
I think this salon is great-it's very convenient if you live in West Philly and they are able to fit you in same day (most of the time).
I had a fantastic cut from my old stylist in California, but it was getting a little long, so I went to Saturn Club on the advice of some classmates. HUGE MISTAKE. First of all, the stylist never looked at my hair until after it had already been shampooed. Second, the shampooing itself was a horrible experience -- the woman yanked my hair, slammed my head into the sink, literally scrubbed my hair between her hands until it was damaged, and then didn't even use conditioner.
It went downhill from there. The stylist told me "don't worry, I can just copy what you had before by looking at it." Yeah, not so much. I should have just gotten up and left when she said "wow, your hair is so straight!" Because my hair is actually really wavy and hard to manage -- the only reason it was straight was because she blew it out! I tried to say as much and she was like "umm... I mean, that's not what I meant by straight..." Ridiculous. Now I have a crappy haircut and have to wait for it to grow out.
I know that the majority of the reviews for the Saturn Club are negative, but I had a really good experience. The stylist, Ananda, did a really great job with my hair. Additionally, she gave me really great advice on how to take care of it while I grow it out. I would certainly go back, if just for her. I was also able to get an appointment at pretty short notice (less than 24 hours).
I went to this place for a Brazilian and I came home with a bunch of ingrown hairs! That's something to YELP about! The salon is a bit eccentric. The waxing area is on the 3rd floor of the building, in a back room decorated with tapestries, postcards, and cat photos. It was like getting waxed in grandma's attic. And the weird thing about the place is that it's also a coffee shop/ cafe. Mmmm.... body hair and food- that's a good combination!
I got a mediocre cut here and I never went back. The atmosphere is nice, but when I was waiting for my appt. I felt forgotten, possibly b/c there are 3 levels and I was on the bottom floor. Point is, I felt the experience was impersonal and rushed.
the building this place is in is a bit strange. my reason for the 2 star review is that the woman who cut my hair (forget her name) obviously didn't understand what i meant when i said to just trim a little bit off of the sides because i ended up with something resembling a military haircut and then got charged $40 for it.
never went back.
I had an underarm wax done here for $15. The aesthetician was Maria - she was very quick and efficient. The atmoshpere is a bit weird - you lie down on a bed in a very small room and the walls are covered with posters and magazine clipings, but Maria changes the parchment cover of the bed (like the ones in a docotr's office) after every client. It's clean, just not a spa atmosphere. Will come here again.
I went back for another underarm wax. I was able to schedule it for the next day which was very convenient. Again, I was with Maria and she was very nice, quick, and efficient.
Cheapest waxing in town...I mean, not like I do that or anything. Heard the haircuts are reasonaly priced as well.
i only get my eyebrow wax and brazilians here...ask for mila, she's the best waxer in town. i hear the cuts are lame, but i don't get cut there, so i don't know personally.
