I've been getting consistently amazing french toast here for over 5 years--since it was called Cafe Today. While the restaurant fills up on weekends for breakfast, the wait is usually reasonable, under 20 minutes, with efficient table service thereafter.
Order the FRENCH TOAST with a "secret coating" (probably Frosted Flakes) at least once and ignore the rest of the menu's temptations. My favorite is marion berry (berries on the side, so the toast doesn't get soggy) which comes with *warm* maple and marion berry syrup. I also order SASSY HASHBROWNS (oozing with cheddar cheese, sauteed onions, and green bell peppers). These two menu items are enough to stuff two people. Ordering coffee will get you a full-sized pot.
All of the dishes here are fantastic, and I loved the service and atmosphere -- a thrice-weekly haunt of mine, while I attended school and lived just down the block...
But regardless of the great food, etc., I am giving this place 5 stars for the French Toast alone!! Hands down, it's like a separate food group all by itself! So if you're into discovering the best French Toast in the world -- you've found it here!
Oh, Sassy's, you're my favorite. And I don't say that to everyone, so you know I'm telling you the truth.
If cheap and delicious and plentiferous breakfasts are your thing, then Sassy's will be your favorite, too.
For a very long time, the only dish I could order was the French toast. Not like anyone was forcing me, but it's just so good that its reputation precedes it (and it lives up to its reputation). They make the French toast from what has to be an unusually large loaf, as not only are the slices at least two inches thick, but their circumference is also quite large...filling your plate.
Then, I really felt like I should try something new, but I still couldn't move away from the awesome French toast, so I moved on to the Sassy Blintz. It's not made out of a crepe. It's made out of...you guessed it...French toast. A huge piece of it is filled with a sweet cheese spread and topped with fresh Oregon Marionberries and a crunchy oatmeal/brown sugar strusel topping. It's amazing. UH-MAY-ZING.
I think I decided to venture past the French toast once (so hard to do!), and got an Eggs Benedict with avocado. It was very satisfyingly perfect, and they offer several variations on the classic dish. The hash browns were perfect and crisp, and the toast was equally fantastic.
But last time I went, I decided I should probably be a little health conscious. I was once again surprised by their menu. They had about six different combinations for oatmeal (I ended up with the cheapest with brown sugar and raisins for $4.95, but they had other options like marionberries, blueberries, dried cranberries, etc., etc.), and mine came in a huge bowl, and I couldn't finish all of it. It was delish, though. I also got some fruit, although I found that for $2.95, the amount and quality was disappointing.
Next time I need a butter-and-syrup fix, I'm definitely running here. Breakfast coma.
Went here during a road trip from Seattle and was pretty impressed. Good food and service, not too expensive. Better than plenty of pricey places in Seattle!
I came here for breakfast and was impressed with the menu--everything had a fresh/healthy twist that took it beyond the diner fare I expected, and at a great price. Ended up with the buckwheat banana pancakes, which were not too sweet and served with both real maple and marionberry syrups. They somehow managed to run out of bananas to top them off with, but the berries they used as a replacement were delicious. Looking forward to trying more of the menu.
I don't go here as much as I'd like to but every time I go it's a great breakfast (never been here for lunch). The menu has a wide variety of yum breakfast dishes, and the French toast is amazing. I probably don't go much because it's overcrowded on the weekends and it may be hard to find parking. Once I got stuck eating in a small random room. Something else that I don't like much are the small drink portions. The service is great. Overall, it may be a little inconvininent when it gets crowded but the food is great and worth it.
Work has brought me to Salem where they once burned witches and within 30 minutes there's a city called Butteville (heh Butt!). How much more charm could Oregon have? Ok, maybe it was the wrong coast for witch burning, and Butteville isn't actually pronounced "Butt" but it sure is hell fun.
Anyway, while working within the rainy confines of Oregon, I needed something to pick my spirits up. What better than a little sass? The Sassy Onion actually isn't very sassy inside due to minimal decor and plain seating areas but good god is the food delicious. I would recommend the honey mustard chicken sandwich and the sweet potato fries. Here in California you'll be paying Corner Bakery prices for this ridiculously sassy meal. I've never considered eating breakfast here so I obviously have limited experience but consider me a tourist who's sold on the Onion and all it's sass.
Not worth 5 stars. Based on the all-5-star ratings, we pulled off the highway on a road trip through Oregon. The food is decent (definitely better than, say, a Denny's), but not over-the-top great, even for the price. Service was ok, not amazing, and the décor was actually pretty boring.
I'd recommend it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again.
Don't let all the 5-star ratings set your expectations too high.
We had heard a lot of great things about the Onion from friends, especially about the breakfast offerings such as the "famous french toast" so we decided to check it out during our recent staycation. We came a little too late for breakfast (our bad) so we only had the option to order lunch and the french toast. I ordered the Marion Berry toast and my wife ordered the Pastrami Ruben special. The prices seemed a touch high but we were expecting large portions and phenomenal taste. I got one large (5 inch diameter) piece of french toast with a fair amount of berries, which seemed small for $8. The taste was good but nothing special. The big disappointment was the Ruben which had little meat (maybe 2-3 ounces of meat) on overbuttered bread, which seemed really small. It was a workweek and service was good. It got really nuts with all of the State employees showing up for a quick lunch. Overall a big disappointment.
If you like Sysco, you'll like this place. IMO, it's food rivals dime-a-dozen cafes or roadstop diners. Folks, this is no place to write home about. What it seems to having going for it is its proximity to Willamette University, the Capitol, and some government buildings. On top of the mediocre food and service, you get to shell out for the parking meter.
The French loaf is MORE BETTER. One slice here is 3x bigger than a regular slice of French toast. It's like a whole loaf of French toast. Its resickulous. One of the best breakfasts I ever had. Their cinnamon rolls are the real deal. The portions are massive so the price is worth it. Share one breakfast plate and a slice of French loaf. I know that sounds like a cheap skate but I'm being honest.
I haven't eaten here in 5 years, and I still remember it. That's how good my breakfast was. What made it so special you ask? The amazing French Toast. It is one piece, about two inches thick, covered in the most amazing batter you have ever tasted. If you are looking for a good breakfast place in Salem, for the love of jebus, go to the Sassy Onion. You won't be dissapointed.
Ordered the French Toast Marion Berry with a side of hash browns, and my companion had the blintz with sausage. The blintz is made out of the toast, and the toast was excellent. I can't substantiate this, but the bread tasted fresh-baked, and the sausage was very strong and clean, as though it were fresh-made or at least local. The wait was 20 minutes for two at 11 AM on a Sunday, which was reasonable considering the quality of the experience. Staff was courteous and friendly. If you're in Salem for breakfast, check this place out.
