Pros: Carne asada fries
Cons: Can't think of any :)
Three words: Carne asada fries.
I've had my share of carne asada fries from various hole in the wall Mexican restaurants and this place definitely ranks up there. There's seating inside and outside and service is relatively fast. Definitely give this place a try if you're in the area.
We now live about 15 miles from Sarita's Taco Shop, but we are still loyal and make the drive, passing dozens of lesser taco shops on the way, to Sarita's several times every month.
My husband is from Ensenada and he swears that Sarita's adobada tacos, carne asada and Tijuana tortas are better than any joint he knows across the border.
The service is always with a smile, the wait is short (we call ahead and it is always ready, and always right with our "special order requests") and the prices are on point with every other taco shop in San Diego.
It is worth the drive to Spring Valley. I promise.

Hungry? Late? Then Sarita's is the place for you! And usually, with an extensive and exhausting menu, one finds duplicates. Not here! Furthermore, the items I ordered tasted different.
My order was taken with a smile, although there was some confusion as to what i wanted. I have a tendency to order without ever looking at the menu. I mean hey, Mexican food is Mexican food right?
If you're ever in the area, then defiantly go and try it out. If you don't live in the area, then it's worth the trip to get a taste of a pleasant and flavorful delight.
BTW, Carne Asada Fries!
I guess everyone has a "regional" preferences when it comes to Mexican Food. Since I live in Mira Mesa, I usually go to Cotixan or Los Primos. Around the tri-Mesa area Lolita's comes to mind first. A friend recommended me to Sarita's in Spring Valley, and after making the trip from SDSU and looks like this will be my spot. If you can stand the cramped restaurant and the pint-sized parking lot, then prepare yourself for some of the best carne asada fries around. It's only 6.49, but you'd kick yourself thinking you probably paid 10 bucks for these. Hell it's big enough to serve 3 people. The guy who helped me was pretty nice, reminded me of Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite for some reason. They also get bonus points for taking credit cards. Anyways, thank you Jared for showing me the way to Sarita's, and now I'll be showing my way to the bathroom.
I made a rare appearance in Spring Valley as I had an appointment with my new dentist there. After listening to her rant and rave about how she's only seen teeth like mine on a Himalayan goat, I figured I'd check out one of the local taco shops nearby. I reached into the hat and pulled out the name of my next victim.
Sarita. Sarita? Sarita (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). So I ordered the bacon burrito which turned out to be a thick-ass burrito (breakfast burrito # 15 - http://www.yelp.com/bi...). Now, I'm one of those kooks that actually LOOKS at what he's eating before he shoves it in. As a result of this practice, I spotted something while eating the second half. What the hell is that? A potato? An onion? Whatever it is, it's a big chunk.
It was a big chunk alright - a big chunk of FAT (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). I've seen chunks of fat in a burrito before but never something as big as this. Did I pay extra for this? Do people ever ask for a side order of fat?
The burrito wasn't all that great - way too salty for my liking. Like I mentioned, it was a thick-ass burrito but, as they say, bigger isn't always necessarily better. I'll swing through again in six months after my next dentist appointment to check something else out.
When we move to spring valley I was really disappointed that any good Mexican food was a drive away until we discover sarita good food u can call your order in ( always a long line) plus they are open 24/7 can't beat that recommend to any one who likes Mexican food
They're open late, the prices rock and the carne asada fries are amazing! Nice quite little place with great food.
Not great, not horrible. I hear lots of people in the East Co. (Spring Valley Area) rave about this place. But it's no El Cuervo or Los Panchos or Dos Brasas in my book, but then I am a snotty Hillcrest girl!
So, if im out East, this is the place I hit up. If I am in "my parts", then I'll stick with what I know...
Sarita, Sarita
Why did you let me down, your CA burrito is still my fave. but you need to hire some people with customer service skills. I went last Sat. ordered my usual CA burrito with large horchata. When my order was ready the guy gave me my burrito and a can of coke. I said it was a large horchata. I even told him in Spanish " papa, yo siempre ordeno lo mismo, una horchata sin hielo" he said no you said coke, then said o.k. grabbed the coke of my hand and gave me a cup that contained 99% ice and 1%horchata, I said "sin hielo" (no ice), he turn around around and blew me off. I told him "dude, if you give me the horchata that I ordered, you arent going to get charged for it on your check" Sorry Saritas, but I was your biggest fan, but thats no way to treat a customer.

Best 2am burritos! Dont know what I would do if I coulnt go theare after a night at the bar!
best. carne asada. fries. ever.
Make sure when you order "to go" check your food before you leave. The last three times my man would ask for no guacamole (crazy...I know) and we got home and discovered guac - too lazy to go back to correct it. And the last time I ordered a Illegal torta (chicken, avocado & Oaxaca) and gave me milenesa ("steak" like) torta instead. Again we did not check before I left.

Meh.
I had formed my own opinion about this years ago, and after reading all the rave five-star reviews, I've made my conclusions:
1. Saritas is near a high school and a middle school.
2. Saritas is open 24 hours.
3. Saritas has simply herculean portions.
4. Most high-schoolers, middle-schoolers, and people that need food at three in the morning appreciate herculean portions.
Now don't get me wrong; their Adobada is amazing. The problem is that most people roll in, drunk, at all hours and get the typical carne-asada-something.
This place is very clean, and again, a couple of items are very, very tasty.
But the majority of everything I've gotten there (over many years) is meh.
Thank God that doesn't matter to me after a good night of ber-hopping.
Very good and cheap! Carne asada fries! What?!?! 24/7 What?!?! Nice place to go after a gig with a hungry crowd.
So, I looked up this place on yelp of course.
and I saw the divine picture of pollo asado fries
which I haven't tried before and after seeing the photo
I wanted to try it. When I got there the atmosphere was cute,
clean, and the lady working there was nice. I already knew what
to order and when the food came I was happy to see it look
like the picture. It turned out to be good just like I thought in
my head!! by far the best I have ate yet! Definitely recommend
anyone who likes mexican food to go try theirs. Its one of my
favorites as of right now.
i do love this place!! i always call in my orders cause there is always people there geting some food!!! :) if Ur hungry late at night this is the place to go....for a good price...an for good portion's...an bomb ass carnita's burrito. There is always someone u know!haha
By far the best deal in town. And with several other Mexican food places on the same street, Sarita's owns them all.
My fiancee and I were long-time loyals to Santana's, so when we moved to the neighborhood we were excited to see a Santana's just down the street. However, we were introduced to Sarita's just by word of mouth and decided to give it a try one day, especially after an occurrence of poor service at our beloved Santana's.
On our maiden visit to Sarita's we had ordered a couple of burritos to appease our late-night alcohol munchies. First, we were surprised by the prices. Less than $5 for a burrito?! I'm sold! We wait a while (about 5-10 minutes, it's made to order and it gets pretty busy.. no drive-thru) and our order's up. The hostess prepares a white paper bag, and I say, "red please" indicating which hot sauce i prefer. She hands the bag over and I think to myself, "man, she gave me a lot of hot sauce" Wrong. Each burrito must have weighed 3 pounds each or something. The burritos are gigantic, freshly made, and soooo tasty and filling. It makes you wish you could eat the whole thing in one sitting. I felt like Adam Richman trying to finish a 7-lb burrito. Respect to the man.
Sarita's is the go-to spot for mexican food in the area, by far. Just call about 10 minutes in advance and you should be in and out of there in no time. Their website is pretty substantial for a taco shop. Check it out!
I've been going to this place forever, it use to be my favorite taco shop, but lately it's been kinda whack. Their burritos are nice and big, but if you get it to go good luck gettin more then 3 hot sauces without gettin the evil eye. I'm convinced that they make the people who work the register fill those tiny fuckin cups up... and that's why they don't wanna give em out. The people who work there are just sometimes annoyingly too dumb.
If you like hanging out with stupid ass little high school kids, then this place is for you!
I will say this however, that one time this chick I knew got so fuckin wasted that she passed out on the toilet in the bathroom, and the guys in the back there were kind enough to let me go around the side of the building and poke at her with the handle end of a broom stick to try and wake her up. If it wasn't for that they'd most likely be gettin 2 stars from me.
Love it! Breakfast burrito, Fish burrito, carne asada fries, potato rolled tacos, chicken tamale...there is something good there for everyone!!! 24hours, good food, good price!!!
I love Saritas so much I used to have their number saved in my cell phone. I will travel for 24 hour amazing burritos.
My Dearest Sarita,
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach.
Your flavorful seven sea soup with adorable little crabs, mussels, octopus, and other fresh seafood.
The amazingly enormous burritos and my favorite: SHRIMP
24 hour service that allows you to dine in.
Carne asada nachos and fries that make me drool uncontrollably.
Your ability to make me slip into a blissful food coma is always a guarantee.
Gracias,
Ho-sefina.
All I have to say is THANK YOU Yelpers. Great place.
I would certainly bring someone with me because it is not a very safe neighborhood. I would always do take out because I don't find the restaurant to be very cozy.
However, I must say....the food is like Trump would say "TERRIFIC"!
!Mi favorita! What isn't muy bueno on the extensive menu? The ceviche tacos are great, and for the first time last Saturday afternoon at the suggestion of my son, I tried the camaron y pulpa (shrimp and squid) cocktail, which is soupy deliciousness in a huge container. I also had the yummy shrimp tacos having made the hard decision not to get rolled tacos or the famous carne asada fries.
And gracias, Sarita (and many other taco shops) for giving us baggies of spicy carrots. When I moved to the east coast and asked for them at so-called Mexican restaurants, people looked at me as though I'd grown another cabeza or something.
Sarita's is the best taco shop ever. I have been eating there for the last eight years and I wouldn't recommend anywhere else. Everything is good. Carne asada burritos, breakfast burritos, tostadas and tortas are the ish. I'm glad that they're open 24 hrs now, so when you are coming home from a long night out, that's the place to go. I guarantee you if go there at 2 A.M., it will be packed. Definately have the number in your phone at all times.
I went to Sarita's for the first time today based on the reviews. This place was good, but I don't think I'd drive out of my way to go here. It's no Lolita's (Bonita, CV, Clairemont) or La Posta (Hillcrest, El Cajon), but it is better than El Compadre (El Cajon)!
The burritos are huge, the rolled tacos w/guac were yummy, and I loved the horchata.
If I was in the area, it'd be hard to choose between La Posta and Sarita's. I do want to try the soup!
I uploaded the pic, that I took with my cell.
I grew up in La Mesa and Poway, I grew up with Alberto's and the 2 pound carne asada burrito for $2.
So when I moved back to San Diego after bouncing around the country for 10 years I was more than pleased to find Sarita's right down the street from me. Sarita's is small enough to have the "hole-in-the-wall" feeling, but a menu three times as big. The food here is awesome, I have tried just about everything on the menu and was never disappointed, my favorites are the carne asada fries, fish tacos, shrimp burritos, chimmichangas, and of course the carne asada burrito.
Today I long for some half-way decent Mexican food, I took a job in Denver and moved in April, I have yet to find anything locally that compares not only to Sarita's, but to any of the wonderful street corner taco shops that are all over San Diego. This is a sad day for a man craving a good fish taco.
We adore Saritas. We lived in the bay area for four years and when we came back home to SD we realized they never had any mexican food as good as saritas up there....and its like the food mecca of the world there. When we're lost for what to do for dinner.....its usually mexican...and its usually Saritas.
And, you never have to feel unsafe in their neighborhood, that is the other side of Spring Valley that's unsafe. That person that said that might just be a bit paranoid or something.
Our favorites are the rolled tacos, BEEF SOUP, carne asada fries, breakfast burritos, and beef tacos. Most stuff on the menu is great.
Now go for a run...or three.
Great taco shop. As a born and raised San Diegan, we can get pretty picky about our taco shops. This place is pretty good. I love their ceviche tostadas. So far, I've ordered that and a carne asada burrito and was seriously impressed with the amount you get. Wow! HUGE burritos. Pretty yummy, not my favorite in SD, but it's still good. My friends are fans of the carne asada fries WITH bacon. Yah, heart attack here they come. Open 24 hrs, and almost ALWAYS packed. I drive the 10 min just to get the grub.
Talk about a hidden gem! I stumbled across this place last summer with some friends that had kept it a secret from me, and now I am Yelping it!
Best carne asada fries, on the face of this Earth. End of story.
I've been eating at this place for 12 years and I all I can say is that after the fire several years ago.....its just never been the same. It has got increasingly worse and worse. Compliments to the hot sauce and that's all I'll say. Santana's a few doors down, has definitely one up'd this local late night eatery.
One of the best places in san diego to serve the infamous cali burrito. Their burritos are definitely worth the price. At a lot of places the burritos are usually a lot smaller than at saritas. The meats are well seasoned and i usually like to get the polla asado since i try to tell myself its healthier than gettin the carne asada but really at coming to these places calories should be the least of your worries haha. This place is always busy at night especially those nights out clubbing or just gettin shit faced late at night. Saritas is definitely the spot i come to now when in SD and on my way home from a night of drinkin.
My favorite taco shop! They are open 24hrs so I can get my Mexican fix anytime of the day. They are cheap but not skimpy with their food. Their burritos are HUGE and they are generous with topping on the rolled tacos and tacos. My # 1 peeve is when taco shops are heavy on the lettuce and skimpy on the cheese...not Saritas. They give you allot of yummy sharp white and orange cheese. The service is fast, friendly, and the place is clean. The only con to this place is the parking. Its always busy and parking is always tight or full. It well worth it though!!!
Saritas...
I am willing to use up my precious gas to have your gigantic fish burrito. So delicious. Call ahead if you want to have your food ready when you get there. Everything I've had here is delicious.
Make sure you ask for chips and salsa if you are dining in (it's free).
By far my favorite mexican food joint.
I was quite impressed! The fact that this place is open 24 hours is a BIG plus, especially since most of the restaurants in my hood of Santee close by 9 PM...some close at 8! At least this place is about a 15-minute drive from home.
The girl taking the orders was very nice. I wanted to ask if she was Sarita, but I'm sure she was not; she was too young. She told me she works 7 days a week from 3-11 PM...that's dedication...even on a Saturday night when someone like her should be enjoying those young years.
The speed of the service was OK. Just a little slow. The friendliness of the counter girl made up for the slow service.
The food was excellent. I had no complaints at all. Except for being a little bit of a drive, if I crave late night Mexican this is definitely the place.
I visited my SD friends for President's Day Weekend and they took me here after a night in Gaslamp.
- open 24 hours: check
- carne asada fries: check
- hole in the wall: check
- not getting carne asada fries but being introduced to pollo asado fries instead: check
- having authentic carne asada/pollo asado fries for the first time: check and check
'Nuff said.
Real good mexican food, Rooled tacos are awesome. Carne asada fries, burritos are really good. I love that they are open 24 hrs because no matter how late or how early i want to stop by i can. Place is pretty clean and the employees are very friendly.
Lovely little Sarita's. So many nights after high school theatre rehersal we would head over to this 24 hour joint.
Their burritos are enourmous, seriously too big for one person to finish alone, and don't even think about finishing off an order of carne asada fries, or even the half order for that matter, it is enough food to feed a small village.
Good tasty Mexican food, 24 hours, what more can you ask for?
Oh, this place equals high school football games for me.
The most glutonous thing there ----- the carne asada fries. Whenever I come back to visit the old hood.... here is where my stomach always drives me. French fries, guacamole, cheese, carne asada, and the best flavored hot sauce you can imagine. Huge portion and good enough to split amoung several people.
Please appreciate the carne asada fries people...... I am telling you from experiance.... it is a sd taco shop thing. Norcaler's have no idea. Keep it a secret and eat it whenever the glutony monster is lurking!!!!
Three words: Siete Mar Soup!
Its a delicious Mexican soup my mother and I LOVE! It has octopus, squid, clams, muscles, fish and other good ocean life. The thing is, most Mexican fast food places don't serve it because its not exactly a Californian Burrito not everyone wants octopus soup!
The fact that they serve it means the food is legit. The fact that its good means they are awesome.
The classic late night goodies are good too, burritos, tacos, other fried substances yummmy
